new nexus 9 user - slow stock ROM? - Nexus 9 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm a samsung s7 user and just bought a Nexus 9 to go with it.
It is factory reset and updated to 7.1.1 stock. I had the impression Nexus line should be smooth and silky. However, the UI seems to be a slightly jerky (and sometimes worse off than my Samsung). Is this normal?
separately, does anyone know where I can get a permanent mini micro-sd reader with a USB passthrough charging port, so that I can charge without having to take out the microsd card?

On many N9's, it's to be expected. Sorry you bought one of them. You may soon experience other issues such as lag, freezes, and reboots. Can you return it? If not, go the root route and try a custom rom/kernel.

[Q] Nexus 9 problems

Hi!
Does anyone have these problems
- Auto rotation of the screen will always remain between the place and this will only help re-start
- The Nexus 9 states that "the 0% battery left," and then it turns off suddenly even if the battery would be the remaining 90 %
- Magnetic protective cover to turn off the screen from time to time so that the device can not log into the other when turning off and restarting it again. The screen turns off immediately , therefore, if you draw a pattern code, or enter a password
- Between the slowness
Sry bad english but i hope your understand what i mean.
1. Never heard about that one, I also do not experience this.
1.1. Have you tried updating (if an update is available) and maybe doing a factory reset?
2. This sounds like a real problem. Maybe exchange your Nexus 9 if possible.
3. I do not really understand what you are trying to explain. Can you try to explain it a bit for clearly?
4. If I understand you correctly, the Nexus 9 lags from time to time for some seconds right? If yes, I also experience this problem very often and it drives me absolutely crazy.
It's not even because the /data partition is encrypted. I re-flashed my nexus 9 with an unencrypted /data partition which indeed gives a performance boost to the Nexus 9 but this lagging/unresponsiveness didn't go away.
The Nexus 9 seems to have serious performance issues but I don't know why. My first generation Nexus 7 had this aswell but not as heavy as the Nexus 9.
It may really be the Nvidia Tegra chip inside.
Anyway: I'm disappointed by the Nexus 9 in terms of performance. My second generation Nexus 7 performs more stable to be honest...

1. My Nexus 9 is up to date. I've tried factory reset but does not fix the problem.
3. I took a video this problem: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vGjwN2IZ58M&feature=youtu.be ( I bought this cover by Amazon and I told them of the problem. They sent to me a new different cover " my request" but same problem.) The problem does not occur when protection ( case) is "disconnected"
4. Yes you understand right.
I took care of this. I hope they fix this.

Lag And Keyboard Lag!

I have the Samsung S6 Edge t-mobile 64gb sapphire and it's been 11 days already . I'm starting to notice some hiccups and lags , between switching apps, tabs and keyboard input lags. It's pretty annoying.
Restart phone..
been doing that since the lag. it's seems there is some underlying culprit. lol. I really don't know...kinda sucks for a brand new expensive smartphone.

turn off internet and wifi..if its better theres an app that want always net...also facebook is very ram hungry...look for such apps...if not find reset the phone...most times its ok after that...
Having same issue. I'm using clean master app and helps. Not sure if that app is good or not. Hangouts lags to open when I get a notification. Can a theme cause this?
It Does LAG!
Your not alone! i experience lag a lot and its annoying considering i payed $1000 for a phone that lags! i do hope there is an update otherwise i will have to go back to iPhone 6 Plus or maybe even wait for 6s Plus!!
I know right?.... I just hate it when the keyboard lags like hell.... been closing applications everytime....so that it will minimize the lag occurrence. kinda sucks.

Everyone with lags...just reflash stock firmware using Kies or smartswitch. My S6 Edge lagged initially. I'm rooted. I'm using the ZiDroid stock recovery. I had wrongly deleted knox files with root explorer making my phone unbootable. I followed the directions of using the kies method *before smartswitch* method and the full on firmware restore killed any lags I initially had. BTW, the Kies method had the OTA update built in.
I'm running stock. not rooted. But with lags.
I agree, I bought the phone because there are so many positive review saying there's literally no lag at all..which is not true
This is TW, and it's TW we all knew, it remind me of my note ii, at least before I flashed it with omniRom
it's lag free initially when no app installed, but after few days of use, stutter just become more obvious
I know i can solve it with phone restart or even factory reset, but that's not how 2015 smart phone should behave, nor justifiable with the price
The TW animation just plane bad compare to stock lollipop, and the stutter just pop out here and there
I'm more than happy to give up all samsung feature in exchange of pure lollipop experience, but unfortunately it's not available yet

May i ask is there a tutorial or youtube link that shows how to reflash stock firmware using Kies or smartswitch?
I may give it a try to refresh my firmware to see if it helps or not
for now, the scroll lag in chrome/play store, delay in pulling down notification and occasional keyboard stutter really annoys me like hell
I have no lag per say the only problems I have is keyboard lag every now and again and redraws. I switched to Nova launcher and get much less redraws. I think that somehow the problem has more to do with lollipop than touchwiz because I had no lag at all on my note 4, until lollipop.
Coming from an HTC One M8 - My phone at times seems slower that this.
Albeit, I do use S Health, Fit bit and some other ram hunger items i guess.
Even when I clean the ram - I still only have less than 10% free!
After having a Note 3 i thougt stepping up to a Note 4 would improve in speed, it didnt, tw was extremely sluggish, lag was laughable with The killerspecs of The Note 4. Flashed a AOSP on my Note 3, fluid as hell! So i sold my new note 4 (0x0 knox), glad i got rid of it!!
Im never gonna buy a Sammy AGAIN, so AGAIN killer specs of The s6 and still lag, its junk!
TW, bloatware, stupid gimmicks are still the big problem!
Be smart, dont go for gimmicks that at first look good, but in reality you never use them..
Buy a Nexus 6, flash a Nice ROM, some mods, decent kernel, enjoy your fluid device!!
(Nexus 6 without contract 450 euro here, half The amount of a 899 s6 edge)
After downloading and installing the google keyboard from the play store, all keyboard lag I had experienced is gone. I think it has to be something with the preloaded keyboard(s) on the system because as soon as I disabled the other two keyboards (samsung and swipe) that were preinstalled and installed the google keyboard, no more lag.

install the google one and wait for the, 5.1.1 update
After root and installing a custom ROM I have not had one bit of stutter.
The only app that occasionally lags is Fleksy, a third party keyboard
Im with google keyboard and it lags terribly, to the point that I need to wait 2-3 seconds between chararcters!!! I had S1, nexus 4, nexus 5 and this device is simply amazingly bad. keyboard lag on a 2015 flagship??? unbelievable. Never going to buy samsung again. After 3 beautiful years with the nexuses, Im considering flashing roms again. sad.
BTW, keyboards legs are not the only legs. I have wallpaper scrolling issues, switching apps issues and so on. Does anybody know if there's a tutorial out there to stop all bloatware and manage memory? Might be better trying to control whats running before starting to flash roms.

I'm running stock, removed briefing, deleted some of the pre op installed apps and the only lag I find is the keyboard now and then. Irritating nevertheless.
Turning off vibrate on keypresses seems to help a lot.

galaxy alpha performance

despite the alpha is still considered a medium-range phone, i want that people who have it to be proud!
why?
because the performance of this phone is a BEAST !!!
just look at the images uploaded from my device, and this is made with stock rom from samsung, no root and no tricks!
Just imagine what this can do over a rooted and/or custom rom !
All of you with a galaxy alpha should try and test a little your beast.
I also challenge you to beat my score, but the condition is to have the original rom, no root or other tricks!
In the last 6 months I had a nexus 5 (2013), HTC One M8 (2014) and now the Alpha Exynos. To be honest, other that the benchmark score, I feel that the Alpha is way more slow than the other two. Using it means constant waiting for something to load. I also feel that the TW is the bottleneck and I really don't understand why it has to take such a long time to load multitasking and/or google search (not to mention the constant stutters and hiccups). I have the latest software - unlocked version - and not rooted.
In terms of daily use is close to HTC One M7 which is a 2013 phone (witch I had before nexus 5).
I'm hoping that 5.0.1 and ART to change this. If not, I'm selling it.
Cheers.
try this:
1- go to developer options and disable all 3 animation settings that are set to 1x by default!
2- install a thirdparty launcher, i recommend nova launcher ...and
3- you dont have to sell it if you achieve request no. 1 and 2, maby you will enjoy it, it is really a premium phone, nice looking and impressing performance as you see my main thread.
i have the exynos also and belive me is way more performant then qualcomm version, try it both before buying!
best regards

Try to use some of the tricks, especially uncheck my magazine because he is slowing down ui.
Also I am using Total Launcher...for me, best launcher by far

Is the Nexus 10 still a worthwhile tablet?

The Nexus 10 was the first 10" tablet I had and it was the most enjoyable tablet I had. Haptic feedback, camera flash, two decent sounding speakers, and the screen size were all pretty nice bonuses.
I'm looking to buy another tablet in the future. Ideally, I want 10" or larger, and the ability to use custom ROMs (does the N10 still have official Cyanogenmod support?) or even better, native Linux. The Nexus 10 seems pretty affordable nowadays, and as long as I can throw a clean ROM onto it (AOSP or CM), I'd be pretty good to go.
So, would a Nexus 10 be a good investment nowadays, or is there another tablet that would be a better choice?

I bought mine in Dec. of 2012 and still use it every day. I've tried a lot of ROMs in the last 3 years, but I keep coming back to the rooted stock ROM (link below). It 's still getting regular security updates and just seems to run the best. I find no reason to go out and buy anything newer, this tab just keeps going and going. I say Go For It!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-10/development/rom-21-11-2014-t2948203
I think N10 is still a good tablet (I'm writing this on mine), especially if you don't intend to run modern games on it. For browsing , youtube and occasional simple productivity tasks - it's just great. Mine is 2 years old now and I think I'll keep it for another year at least. Will try putting marshmellow on it though, I'm just curious like that
As for alternatives, I'd say Sony xperia Z4 tablet is by far the best tablet out there right now. A friend got it recently and it's just great, really. Light, thin, great display (same resolution as N10) and battery life. And it has microsd slot. And you can even put AOSP on it, becase Sony provides binaries. Check it out, but it's probably like twice the price of N10.
My Nexus 10 is two years old and I still love it, although it's starting to chug a little more when switching between apps. I don't know that I would buy one today unless it's brand new (probably hard to find these days) and you got a decent deal on it.
I like my wife's Nexus 9, particularly the aspect ratio. I just wish it had that extra inch of screen space.
My N10 runs fast and smooth. I use stock rooted rom. It runs best on the stock rom.
I bought mine two months ago used. Running stock 5.1.1 and it's a bit slow but for what I use which is solely for media consumption it's great. Nice screen real estate and loud speakers.
Yes! I bought mine used aswell , and Running Marshmallow on it very well, very smooth and fast. Nothing to complaint.
I've had mine for a number of years now. Overall I've been pleased with it until recently. I'm having Wifi issues that drive me crazy. Also, it appears there's a major problem with YouTube that causes the tablet to reboot after only a few seconds of video. I get the feeling the device is just not getting the love from the Google developers that it needs.
My parents own one and have the known " yellow smudge" on the display. I would consider a different tablet.

Hi, im using OmniRom from scanno, you can find it here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-10/orig-development/rom-t3045066)
There are nice differences yes, I find it smoother and with also better battery life. It works very good in every task I do. Although, I find stock 5.1.1 pretty good also but sometimes I had some crashes on youtube and slowing down performance when using it. If you have more specific questions I would be glad to answer if I can. You should try the ROM !!!

In last stock 5.1.1 update I tried to watch 1440p on youtube and my nexus got freezed and rebooted every time I played that resolution. BUT then I flashed OmniRom 6.0.1 and now im able to play 1440p youtube vĂdeos without trouble!!! The difference onthis display is exquicite. You can find omni ROM here http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-10/orig-development/rom-t3045066
I hope this can save your nexus.

Oh ! well if it isnt a trouble for you I recomend you continue using 5.1.1 , its a very good ROM on performance. But if you wish to try on watching 1440p youtube videos I would recomend you to try OmniRom 6.0.1 version! So you still get Omni features and stability and also with Marshmallow features and battery managment.
---------- Post added at 08:36 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:34 PM ----------
There is also a new AICP build with Marshmallow 6.0.1 running well:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-10/development/rom-aicp-11-manta-t3280678
So that you have other options to enjoy
Got mine as a Christmas gift from my wife three years ago. I still use it pretty regularly. The only issue I have is the battery isn't what it used to be (to be expected after 3 years).
Interestingly enough, I still use an AOKP PUB build (Android 4.3, I think - don't have it in front of me) because it was one of the last builds with the ability to have a true tablet UI (back/home/recent buttons on bottom left, status bar/notifications, etc. on bottom right).
I'll probably keep it until it's completely dead. But I'm not sure I have a real need for a tablet. If I'm ever in the market for something else, I'll almost certainly buy a Surface or some other laptop/tablet hybrid.
When I bought my N10 back in early 2013 I thought I wouldn't use it much.. The only thing I regret is getting the 16GB version. I don't think my Note 2 - launched approximately the same time - has been keeping the momentum equally good and it has been upgraded to a N4. But the N10 is aging like wine and I'm impressed to see mine still going after will these years. Would I get a "new" one today? Probably not. But I don't feel a need to upgrade either.
Also as rodeojones writes above.. Do I REALLY need a tablet? Probably not. My N4 is big enough when I'm not at home and when I'm home I usually use my desktop computer. But AICP 11 is working very well...

Hi, I have one of these phones as my backup device. It is currently running CM13, which works very well. However, some apps are causing bootloops after being upgraded for Android Oreo. Lineage OS supports this phone but is still in the "nightly" stage. As soon as they produce a fully stable version, I'll be installing that. The nightlies are currently getting 4 star ratings, so probably working quite well.
Hope this helps.

Can also recommand the CM13 ROM. Also faced the problem that some of the new app versions virtually kill the system and leads to a boot loop. I stick to older app versions now.
Battery life with these newer version is, however, worse compared to stock. But its way more smooth.
