overheating problem - Honor 9 Questions & Answers

Had a problem today where I was using Google maps for navigation and found after 30 mins of use the phone got so hot it became unresponsive and then actually shut down.
Bit of a worry as I was hoping to use this feature a lot as I have with other phones.

You don't experience that heat with other phones? Because using data connection plus GPS will surely cause heat ups.

Not after 30 mins or less of use and then causing the phone to freeze and shut down.

I'm generally impressed with the phone. Camera is great and speed seems fine. Only issues I have is that it does heat up under more demanding use... probably not helped by having the glass back and Indo also think there is some sensitivity issues with the screen not always recognising touches.

Then the better option is to report it to the store where you bought.

I got the phone on contract with three in the UK. It's just over two weeks old so I think now it probably has to go back to honour which is frustrating as I can't be without a phone.
It's quite warm in the UK at the moment and I'm using the phone in a silicone type case and even with doing a bit of simple browsing the web and on this forum the phone feels hot to me in my hands

You gotta return it as soon as possible. Heat ups like that are at risk of explosion.

Hello!
My Honor 9 starts to overheat after 15 minutes of gaming (Real Racing 3). It never slow daow the performance or shut down, but it isn't very confortable.
Do you think this could be problematic? If so, I will return it to Amazon.

I experience great heating problem while using navi(Here maps) or gaming. Can confirm two shutdowns till now,but it was used in car during hot weather, altho AC was on. During playing Unkilled it faced some throttling due to high temperature but nothing serious like on P9.
Waiting for update or returning the phone?

Try to throttle the CPU

I hope an update is coming to this phone. I'm not aware of any having been released since the device was released.
In the main it's a good devizes and quite stable but there does seem to be a few of us with the 'heating up ' issue so hope they come out with a fix.

I used maps today for like 1 hour and phone feels only a bit warm... Can't confirm that.

I've just received the honour 9 today and it's overheating literally just after 15 minutes of use on cellular data something like that

Your phone comes with built in protection to throtle down the CPU when it gets too hot in order to avoid frying it. With that mod what you did was to tell the phone to forget about throtling down and to simply run as fast as it needs to no matter the temp. This makes it a lot harder for the phone to cool down on its own (since the CPU is still producing a lot of heat) and I guess I don't have to tell you how bad heat can be for electronics...
It gets hot in 15 min of playing A8 or MC4

If it gets very very hot, I am sad to inform you, that your unit is faulty.
I had the same problem with my first unit. Also noticed that the benchmark results were quite lower as they should be.
Exchanged it for another one, this one gets only mildly hot and benchmark result are what they should be!
this is the first phone I've had in a while that doesn't actually get super hot.. like my s4 and dna did. how hot are we talking? hottest I've gotten up to was probably 38 degrees Celsius for battery temp, and like 65 for cpu

I feel sorry for all the Sprint employees and LG for the users that blindly turn off thermal throttling, having no clue what it does, and then blame the phone for being defective.
Recently some of my games for updated and now running a lot cooler. I think most game still ramped up the gpu way too high than why needed to run the game smoothly.

Even when I punish this phone it just gets slower, never really hot at all. I used to be afraid of burning my hands on my SGS II, but this never gets hot enough for me to worry at all.
So if my G2's cpu gets to 70 degrees and battery about 43 degrees in 10 minutes of playing gtasa, is that bad enough for service?

You know my phone got really hot with my 3 to old playing Angry Birds Go the other day and I was pretty sure this had something to do with it. The only thing is that the way this is worded is confusing as heck. Do I need to have this switch in the on or off position? High temperature property off? Seems like the ON position is correct so it will throttle down the CPU accordingly.

Getting too hot

Has anyone experienced that the phone gets warm ( between 30-42 degrees centigrade) even when doing normal tasks like browsing the Web/the screen simply being on? Is this normal? Is there a fix for this if it is not?

You'd enjoy using the HTC One X then, normal use it easily reaches 42ºc, extended use and/or heavy use can see the phone reach 55ºc so for me, that's a welcome change.
I should be receiving the Z2 tomorrow anyway so I'll post my findings then.
I have noticed this also. I downloaded about 3gb of games and the top back of the phone got fairly hot

Water resistant coating will always trap more heat inside, maybe that's why Sony uses the slightly lower clocked SD801.

I think that would be a reasonable assumption.
I guess the only question is whether it's a deal breaker or not.
Does increased temperature effect battery life at all?
I noticed this happening recently but on rare occassions. It gets hot right where the camera is located but I'm not sure if it is related to the camera or some other app. I know that it overheats when recording 4K videos over 3 minutes. The quick fix when it heats up is to restart the device so to me it is definitelty software realted.
Mine gets warm, but not got enough to be a problem so far. I'm in the UK.

Coming from the Galaxy Note 2, when my phone got warm it indicated that there was a problem. Maybe since this is part of the design, with the waterproofing at all, I'll just have to learn to accept that the phone will get a little warm.
On the plus side, it'll be good for the winter, to warm up the hands

Most definitely.
Well i can asure you that all snapdragon 800 soc overheat and it depends on what you do,my curent device lg G2 when i bought it,it had jellybean on it whne browsing web listening to music etc it always got hot,but when plating games it was a very big overheating ,the procesor got up to 72`C ad baterry was on 42`C and i thought it was a problem with the phone but after updating to kitkat all problems with overheating where gon even in graphinc intense games it took the phone 30 minutes to heat up significantly + on a side note the battery got a lot better i managed 4 hours and 36 minutes of screen time.
Botom line its a software problem coupled with the nano coting(it blocks heat but not in a bad way that the phone will overheat from that maybe a 5`C block).
Overheating is the reason I didn't get the G2.
It overheated doing basic stuff.
It can't be fixed by software. LG certainly didn't release a fix, so don't expect one for the Z2.
When a phone has overheating problems then it will always have it, just like a laptop or any other hardware.
You'll have to deal with it.

Well not really my m7 used to get warm / hot with 3g or gaming up to 42c after sense 6 it refuses to go above 35c and when gaming up to 39c , so far only known phone that doesn't get hot is the m8. Imo it's tolerable for z2 to stay warmer then other devices , glass isn't the best option for cool phone + sealed phone due water resistance.
Btw yes warm / hot phones have shorter battery life due heat issues , warmer battery = faster discharge rate.
Imo if z2 gets hot only when gaming it's fine, all phones get warm but if it's crossing 37/38c up to 40+ on WiFi and normal usage I'd call that a problem. You can forget the gaming if this is the case lol , at least stable gaming without fps loss and throttle.
The overheating when using the camera is a bit of a concern, especially since that was one of the main reasons i bought the phone.
Is it definitely software related or hardware?
As if its software i can wait for a fix, but if its hardware then i'll need to swap phones
After reading other device forums seems like all the Snapdragon 800/801 devices have the overheating issue: SGS5, Z2, G2, etc.
I think it's because the new SoC is so powerful that it generates a lot of heart, especially when gaming.
Maybe the 805 will fix this. Not gonna buy a device with 800/801 because almost all of them have overheating issues.

[Q] Z2 Overheating / Disappointing battery life

I've had the Z2 two days now and I'm afraid my unit has a problem:
Even in normal use it gets really really hot in the back, on the upper left hand side.
Also, the battery life is really not that great, which is disappointing for a phone with such a big battery (it is barely better than my HTC One M7)
I have neither rooted it nor flashed it, everything is pretty much stock (I have disabled a few apps like facebook)
From what I understand, it is not supposed to be that way.
Does anyone have suggestions? I would prefer not doing a factory reset
Try to get a replacememt
It seems units made before mid may have commonly had majour heating issues, bugs, lag bad battery etc etc etc

Well you dont have much choice
Either stick with these unsafe issues or get a replacement
If you get a perfectly good unit back, you wont regrett the wait nor replacememt
You will find that the Z2 has an amazing battery life, the Z2 ive had hand with has lasted from 22hrs to about 49hrs with moderate/heavy usage
Device just got warm, not hot

Also try doing a factory reset. Mine doesn't get hot and battery lasts very long. Up to 2 days with light to moderate.
At first it was awake all the time, even with screen off, so I guess there really was a bug.
I now have factory reset it, left it overnight without charging it, lost 9%.
Is that a normal number?
I've attached a screenshot of the power management app. Can someone tell me if there's something wrong with it?
My overheat issue cam from Google image backup. Turn it off and see what happen.

Let it cool off. It's minor stuff that gets it hot too: I have a black otterbox commuter on mine and it overheats when I sit on my phone texting with like 5-7 apps running in the background such as Snapchat, SMS app, What's App, Contacts, Settings, Facebook, or Instagram. Gmail, Yahoo Mail, Lookout, Wifi (off when at work), Hangouts, Twitter, and Google + are considered my background apps since they update in real time when I get messages or notifications. I hardly use it for gaming or any CPU/GPU power hogging. The device sits in my pocket for prolonged periods of time and is only a week old. It can get to even 50 degree celsius at times for little activity.

Yeah, I was just asking to see if you were playing games when it gets hot, but I see you don't. This might seem dumb, but is the weather hot where you live? If it's hot and the phone is in a tight pocket, it's going to get hot.
But if it isn't, maybe something is using your GPS...that makes the phone pretty hot quickly.

Nah, it's a fair point, but moot in my case since I am indoors at work since I work in an office and I am in an ac at home. Hardly outside much, but the temperatures are like 90 degrees fahrenheit. So roughly 32-33 degree celsius I think. I don't use NFC, GPS, or anything much at all. I turned off a lot of the extra smart features too. Only game that I have played w/ "high graphics" is Temple Run 2 on lowest settings. I took it to T-Mobile to get a diagnostic, but the guy said the case causes it to overheat and my dad says his Note 3 overheats, but my Note 3 never overheated unless I downloaded like 30 apps at once. I have a black otterbox, which the color does trap heat. I went to get it swapped out today, but the Kiosk told me that I had to go to a corporate store. I will go tomorrow. I might just swap out the phone to another device or another S5. They want to charge a $50 restocking fee for swapping the device. I love the S5, but the overheating is just awkward and unnecessary and excessive.

Mine started overheating about three days ago after working fine (I've had it about a month). The battery would drain after a few hours without use and anytime I used an app it would start heating up. Everything is stock. I did a factory reset and reloaded my apps. It seems to be working fine now but I'm going to watch it for a few days.
The only times I have noticed it getting hot was when I use Google Maps..I have been using Project Infinitiy and Alliance ROMs and only stock kernels.
Sent from my SM-G900T using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
It happened on stock twice. 120+ degree fahrenheit on the phone with no apps in task manager. Swapped to the HTC One, which has its fair share of problems with the LED light and duplicate texts.

Screen on time

It's amazing how much we actually use our phones in a given day, especially when we watch "videos"! Rate this thread to express how many hours of screen-on time you can get on the Sony Xperia X Compact before depleting the battery.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Anyone have any feedback? How does it compare to the s7 and s8? The original x?
I just want a small phone with good battery life as my s8 is too big.

Well the games I am looking at is mainly puzzle games, just worried mainly about performance since previous main phone was a xperia m4 aqua that couldn't do plain games and overheated. So I got myself a new main phone, axon7 and handles everything I toss at it but I still want a small and comfy phone for easy use on the go.
