Nexus 9 : screen turning half-black - Nexus 9 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
For 4 days, the screen of my Nexus 9 is turning half-black. The right half of the screen (when in portrait mode) is off. The touch system is working though, when touching in the black area
I did several operations to try to fix that : wipe cache partition, reset to factory settings, and I even downgraded from Nougat to Marshmallow. The screen is sometimes getting back to normal, but not for long time, the half-black side is still coming back...
Did someone already have this problem and know how to fix that?
Thanks

Sounds like you need to replace the screen. There are videos on YouTube.

[Q] Problem when my phone is recovering from Sleep mode

Hi everyone !
I'm new here (and not a native english speaker, so apologies in advance for any grammar mistakes)
Before making this thread, I looked for info here, but I'm not sure for what to search.
I'll try to explain my problem here.
I bought a Galaxy SIII from my provider 3 weeks ago and everything looked fine, till last week.
Some times to time, with no apparent reason or cause, while my phone is on sleep mode, on my desk, or in my pocket, playing music, I have the following problem: when I push the on/off button to wake up my phone, my screen is turning on, taking me to the lock screen.
But, my screen brightness is very low, like set to the minimum.
And when I draw my unlocking pattern, screen goes black.
Bottom buttons are lit and my phone seems to be OK, I can feel haptic feedbacks.
But the screen is black.
If I push the on/off button again, screen stays black and bottom buttons are not lit anymore, as a usual Sleep Mode.
If I push on/off again (depending on how much I wait between 2 on/off):
- My phone awakes from Sleep and takes me again to the unlock screen, brightness still very low. And after the unlocking pattern traced, black screen again
- If I didn't wait enought after putting it into sleep mode, in this case, I don't have to redraw the unlocking pattern. I'm back to my home screen...
for 1/4 of a second, stilll with brightness at the minimum. And screen goes black.
And after a serie on onoffonoff, boom, my screen is back to full and normal brightness and everything is OK.
At the beginning, my phone did that once in a while. I thought at the time ti was after pushing the on/off button while using a CPU/RAM hungry app, my phone struggling to recover....
But now, it's totally random.
Depending on .... I don't know what, I have to do the onoffonoff thing 2, 5, 10, 50 times in a row so my phone can recover from is half comatose.
Yesterday, I could not use my phone for half an hour ...
and if someone calls me, I hear the ringtone, but screen stays black.
I can answer the call (but not knowing who's calling) by sliding on the part of the screen where the slider normally is.
Funny thing is about removing the battery. It doesn't solve my problem.
When I do so, my phone boots, I see the "Samsung Galaxy SIII" boot screen, on low brightness (whih is not normal ...)
After that, I normally have another boot screen with my provider's logo and tone. But screen goes black again (but I still here the tone)
Then I realized it started to happen when my phone proposed me a Samsung update.
I tried to reset my phone to factory settings but it didn't work, the update was still here.
For a while I thought my problem was solved, because my phone behaved normally for 3 or 4 hours, without problem.
But it came back.
I found on the internet several "almost-same-problems" without proposed solutions.
Like checking if the proximity sensor was blocked by a protective transparent plastic sheet, or a case.
I tried to to remove mine.
Didn't work.
Some people said it was linked to their phone trying to acquire a wifi network.
My wifi on or off, withiin or without the range of a wifi router didn't work ...
I tried to note things down about what I did, when, how, app launched before the problem appears.
I checked battery info (temp, voltage, etc).
No pattern emerged.
So.
Hs anyone of you enountered the same problem ?
Do you have ideas, solutions I can use ?
Or maybe a voodoo prayer ?
I could sent it back to my provider which will bounce it back to Samsung. But it will take ages (3 to 4 weeks ...) :'(
Thanks in advance !
do a factory reset, go completely stock
if that doesn't help, send it in

That's what I did.
I tried by going into the Parameters menu, and reseting.
I tried by booting my phone with Vol+ / Home / Power buttons to access a console mode and do a wipe data/reset.
The problem is that my phone got an update like one week ago from a 4.?.? to 4.1.2.
And even with a reset, my phone reboot with the 4.1.2 version, which seems to cause this problem.
Or maybe not, but I can't be sure.
As I said, after a factory reset I did yesterday, everything went well for 3 or 4 hours and the problem reappeared.
send it to the service

[Q] Samsung Note 3 Lollipop Issues (Sprint Stock Build)

So i was just forced to install Lollipop by Sprint. I was having a minor S-Pen issues and Sprints "FIX" was to update me to Android 5.0 Lollipop. Well now I have 500000000 other issue with my phone. Most i can live with, but there are 2 in particular that at driving me absolutely bonkers and I cant fix. I was hoping someone around here would have an idea how to fix it without me having to root, and go back to the previous OS. (The Sprint Root seems a little intimidating and I cant afford to brink my phone even for 20 minutes).
The main issues I am having are regarding the lock screen. I cant get the lock screen to stay open more then 3 or 4 seconds and if I botch my pattern or don't swipe fast enough, the screen will turn itself off. Then I have to turn the screen back on and try and unlock it again. Sometimes the screen even turns off in the middle of trying to unlock it. It is EXTREMELY annoying having to try and unlock my phone 4 or 5 times just to get to the notification screen ...... As for the Notification screen, once i finally am able to get my phone unlocked, then when i try and swipe my notification bar the phone will sometimes turn the screen off as well, then I have to go BACK to trying to unlock the phone and try and do everything faster then 2 jack rabbits banging in order to just get to my notifications. Its become a major problem in that sometimes I just cant get the sequence and speed right for 10 or 15 tries.
Anyone else having these issues or have a fix???

I can't say I had any problems like this. I was running Stock rooted OC5 for a while and had really no problems with it. I didn't have any pattern or pin unlock though, so maybe it would have been different? I would have stayed stock but my Flashaholic took hold and made to start trying out other ROMs.
As for rooting, I have found it very easy to root this phone. I haven't had a problem either using auto-root or flashing superSU.
Factory reset is easy.

before a factory reset, you might try doing a wipe of the cache partition.
turn your phone off
press and hold, Volume up + home key + power until you see the blue booting to recovery mode message
wait for recovery mode to display (the menu will show after the green robot)
use the volume rocker to move down to wipe cache partition and press the power button to select it.
now select the yes line and press power
now reboot your phone and see if that helps with the lock screen behavior
good luck

[Q] Wierd behaviour on lockscreen

Hello all,i'm using a 16Gb N9 WiFi only version,i'm on 5.1.1 stock rooted, mainly for AdAway use...I've been experiencing wierd issues for the last week or so,when either double tapping the screen, which doesn't seem to work 100% as has been until now.
What's more, i'm using a Moko Flip Case and flipping the cover doesn't always work as well. These are not concerning by themselves but despite which way i try to use to turn on the screen (double tapping, opening the cover, pushing power button) when the screen turns on and i swipe to unlock then immediately the screen turns off ,no matter how many tries i try to swipe to unlock,it turns off thus making a need for rebooting mandatory....
Has anyone else experienced this? Should i factory reset the tablet or is there a fix, mainly for the last part..Thanks for taking the time to read this!
Workaround
It has been happening ever since upgrade to 5.1.1. Reboot fixes it but is annoyance. I tried wiping cache and factory reset, but the issue still persists. The easiest solution is to left swipe on the camera to open the camera app, then use the back button to come back to login screen. This time around the pattern will work.

Does the problem go away when you take off the flip case? If so, put it back on and see whether you can make the screen go black depending on how you fold the case behind the tablet. If it's one of those three-part covers, flip the case to the back, then flip the outer third over once more - does that turn off the screen? The screen turns off when the magnets on the case and on the N9 are aligned, and this can also happen with the case flipped to the back.

Indeed it does go away without the case, I do have one of these three part covers. It works fine when the cover is on the back but I left for a business trip and left the cover at home at the moment. I'll definitely try when I get back! Thanks for the info!!
Sorry I was busy and didn't have time to check xda... Thanks both for your answers!!
My wife is having this same problem with the Nexus 9 I got her for her birthday... I got it with the official keyboard case, but when the problem starts happening, it continues to happen even when the tablet is completely removed from and separated from the case. I also tried running the camera from the lockscreen, returning to the lockscreen, and trying to unlock the tablet without success. She is just using the slide to unlock screen without any security.
weird...lucky mine doesn't do this...or knock on wood, hasnt yet lol
i have double tap to wake up tablet option from eX kernel and i also use a passcode unlock screen and i also have a moko type magnetic case...everything is fine for me(so far...)
ot: what lockscreen app passcode app works so that when u enter 4digits u DON"T have to press the enter key to get in...i hate having to press the enter
in iOS iphone u just need to enter 1 2 3 4 <unlocks> goes to homescreen
stock android : enter 1 2 3 4 ENTER key then it unlocks

After Factory Reset, Android Galaxy Camera Touchscreen is unresponsive

I met the weirdest thing I ever have. I have a galaxy camera gc100, It works very well without any problems. Since I decide to lend it to my friend, I did a factory reset. After the factory reset, everything looks fine and the initial setup screen "Select language" appears. BUT, I can not touch anything on the screen. It seems that the touch is simply unresponsive at all until the screen turns off by timeout. And then I tried (1) hard reboot, (2) go to Maintenance boot mode by pressing power and zoom out and did delete cache and factory reset again. (3) flash stock rom. (4) take out of the battery and then holding pressing the power button for more than 1 minute and then insert the battery and boot. (did three times). But none of them works. This is just weird and I can not find anyone on the Internet having the same issue as me. Other people met unresponsive touch screen and then did hard reset to fix the issue. Mine is entirely opposite. I don't have any problems, but factory/hard reset causing the touch screen is unresponsive at initial setup screen. Do anyone have any clue how I can workaround this issue? Thanks a lot. (Btw the system is still functioning because I can adjust volume and take screenshots by using the physical buttons, and the screen can rotate too).
The touch screen might have been disconnected from the motherboard (if it was poorly treated)
Or water got inside and caused a short circuit.
The touch screen could have failed from age or other cause.
If what you said you did is true, then may have to get it replaced
Also android 4 supports mouse (as a last resort) using an OTG cable.

Question [Solved] Bootloop noticing after MIUI 14 Update

Firstly I wanted to clarify one thing that my phone worked okay after the update. I didn't realise it has updated until after a boot loop.
Just FYI The camera in my phone have been crashing randomly when taking pics and the pics weren't having the full resolution. It was 1280x720. This wasn't an issue for me and I ignored it for like 3-4 months.
So my redmi note 10 have had some random reboot issues lately which i didn't give much attention to. It wasn't frequent just rare random reboots. Few days back I noticed my phone rebooting while in use and it started to loop for a few times and when it loaded into lockscreen right after unlocking, the power button started to press automatically triggering the power option screen and then the emergency calls as well. It stopped after a few taps on the power button.
A day or two later it rebooted once again while the recorder was on and and this time it boot looped a few times and showed the lockscreen and crashed booting back once again. A few tries after that it booted up and I was able to use it for another day.
The very next day, it did the same. Started to boot and loop once again. But this time when the battery is sufficient enough or the phones cool and haven't been used for a while, it boots into lockscreen but freezes and crashes. At one occasion, it stayed just a few more seconds long enough to open the passcode screen but crashes before I could type anything. Then it loops once again and before even reaching the lockscreen, boots back into MI Android Powered screen right after the three dots blinking page. And randomly it boots into lockscreen as well. But once the battery is down or the phone is heated enough, it barely goes into lockscreen.
Booting into safe mode also shows the same. It sometimes boots into lockscreen but doesn't show the 'safe mode' text in the bottom.
Right now when I had kept my phone off for a while it booted into lockscreen twice and the screen dims immediately before freezing and crashing.
The third time it just went back to the MI Android powered logo right after the three dots blinking screen.
Guys please let me know do you think this is a hardware issue or a corrupt software update?
I know software update issue can cause bootloop but does it reach till the lockscreen? My phone consistently gets into the lockscreen when the battery is sufficient or the phones cool enough.
What last update did you perform?

MIUI 14 which i didn't even realise until I checked the settings app one day after a boot issue
What version do you have?
For me see screenshot, works fine!
Backup your data and clean flash with Mi Flash Tool, you can then exclude any software problem
This issue have been resolved.
The issue was the CPU couldn't handle the heat once the device turned on and would reboot right after reaching the lockscreen and loops.
Thank you for all your suggestions, though.

May I know how did you fixed the issue? I'm stock with same situation as you. Did you change any hardware?
Hey, my mi 10 5g has similar symptoms - random restarts + random switch on power button without pressing it...
all this came after upgrade from miui 13 to 14..I use this phone for 1,5 yr with no problems...
Phone get hotter also...
Is it related to bug?
