I have been using my Xperia x10a to tether for the past year. Recently ATT&T has sent me a letter in the mail saying that if I do not discontinue tethering that they will automatically add me to a $45 plan instead of the $30 that I pay now for the internet usage. AT&T stated that they are giving their customers until December 31st to stop tethering if they do not have the plan after I called them. My question is, did AT&T recently figure out a way to track tethering for I have also done it on my Iphone 3g since 3 years ago?
Bump...please help
hum
I think tracking tethering on android is not posible...I mean..they have to see exactly what programs are you using....and how do you use them...thats invading ur personal space...i think the way they are tracing tethering...is on looking how much bandwidth you use....and if they have like a apk that installed and sents them info oin how you use your tethering you can just block it with a firewall....just an opinion.....
As far as I know, they can't track android tethering. The iphone uses an alternate apn for tethering, so they're easily tracked. The android uses the phone's normal apn. They would have to scan your data packets to determine where your data is going/coming from. Which I doubt they will because that would become expensive. I would assume thats an invasion of privacy as well.
I use my tethering all the time and I've only had one message from att, which was about two months ago, regarding tethering. I had got a warning saying my data was at 90% then later I got one saying i should change to a tethering plan if i want to tether. It never said anything about them changing my plan automatically if I used it. So I'm thinking they just noticed it was used up quickly. I had tethered to my console to watch netflix on the TV, which took about 1.4gb, and it played perfectly.

Hey all -
My friend just bought an HTC Rezound to with a 2GB (4GB due to their current promo) data plan. He plans on using it as his main internet connection at his house over the summer because up there, they don't have cable internet or DSL available. Anyone have any input on what the best setup (ROM wise and app wise) would be for him to achieve this? I'm a little worried because I've seen some people saying Verizon can charge you for teathering (I'm currently on Sprint and have never had this problem on a rooted device) even if you use are rooted and use a 3rd party app. Is that true? If he has a custom rooted ROM, and uses something like android wi-fi teather, he should be fine right? How could they tell the data is going to a desktop vs. being displayed through his phones browser?
Anyone?

I really don't think you can tether for free with any of the ROMs out now. I just came from a droid 3 and could tether after hacking the radio, but haven't seen anything like that for the rezound. Tethering does come in handy once in a while. Anyone have any success tethering for free?

I believe there are at least two threads that deal with this at xda, so search "rezound wifi tether" on Google and you should get many hits. Search is your friend.
However, the long and the short is, GB ROMs will allow adhoc wifi tethering and ICS ROMs allow infrastructure tethering.
If you don't understand the difference, I wouldn't suggest messing with your friend's Rezound until you've done some research.

There are currently no wifi hotspot hacks to allow what your friend is looking for. If he's smart he'll pay for wifi hotspot and get unlimited data in the process(plenty of info on that). Otherwise as stated above, ad-hoc tether is available for GB and infrastructure tether for ICS.

So are you saying that VZW can tell if you use ad-hoc or infrastructure tether? I canceled my mhs because it was basically useless. Haven't asked for a refund since I figured I was getting what I paid for a little at a time and I thought they didn't know...

Nope, I was just saying that there isn't a hack for free MHS. You can only do 1-to-1 device tethering without MHS. As far as we currently know ad-hoc and infrastructure tethering is still not detectable.
I know At&t was pulling "We know you are tethering" claims with all the iPhone users when I was with them. That said I don't see how they could claim this with android with the option to use Firefox+Phony to change how you see the webpage.
I tether all the time for free
Hi Everyone,
I'm looking for other users' experience with and using their phone as a mobile hotspot. I'm going to be going on a family vacation in a couple of weeks and I was looking into using my phone as a hotspot so kids can watch netflix while driving or I can hook up a Roku in the room and stream through my phone. The hotel we're going to doesn't have Internet in the rooms from what I can gather, they only have an Internet Cafe' down by the pool.
I only have 1GB of LTE data on my phone since I'm surrounded by WiFi and music streaming is free. I called T-mo and they said I can switch to the unlimited data on my phone for however many days I needed it (pro-rated charge) and that works out well for me. But then when I asked about the hotspot info, I got pretty confused on it. The rep was trying to explain that I could use my own mobile data for hotspot, but it would cap at 5gb of data transfers (which is like 1 HD Netflix movie). Then he tried telling me that there were specific hotspot plans but I needed a special device for that.
So what's the deal? Is it possible to just upgrade to the unlimited lte data plan for my phone line and then have hotspot access and be able to watch more than one or two movies using it as a hotspot? Or is there a special plan that I should be asking to get added? My phone is Tmo S5, rooted, running S&T rom.
Hi All,
Longtime Samsung user here and I've just moved over to the V10.
Hello to all.
I've been doing a lot of reading and as far as I can tell there is no known way of bypassing the tethering provision on T-Mobile to take advantage of unlimited data plans, is this correct? I have heard of 3rd party apps like WiFi for tether router and FoxFi but lately people have been suggesting that T-Mobile has found a way to monitor those.
So is there a way to take advantage of my unlimited data plan using my device as a hotspot?

Ah.
Thanks for replying but That's not going to help. I need to hook up a Roku wirelessly.
I think I may have a solution but I need to test more before I share
Ok.
Nothing I tried worked. I monitored my hotspot usage daily and it kept going up. Has anyone been able to bypass the tether restriction?

only way I know to bypass (on PC) set user agent to chrome on Linux or android or Firefox on Linux Android
if you tell t-mobile you want there. truly unlimited data, no BS unlimited, you get free unlimited hotspot free, no extra games, BS, or hotspot hacks needed.

I called T-Mobile and asked about unlimited hotspot and was told they do not offer such a package. How did you get yours?
njdevil, I'm not sure why they didn't offer you this. im in SC, so that may have been a promotional thing, or state specific. Sorry for your troubles, but i promise that's what i have.

I never doubted you. I just wish I could jump on the same trolley car as you. Unlimited tether would be sweet
Sorry to rehash but has there been any progress to this issue?
Has anyone been able to leverage their unlimited data plan for hotspot?

---------- Post added at 06:59 AM ---------- Previous post was at 06:39 AM ----------
ok for me, even tho it is a pin in the a$$
Foxfi have a wifi share option(not stable but work for me) that's what i use. you have to be usb tethering
so if you have a laptop or desktop with Wifi capbility that is your best option( your computer then become the hotspot
hope you understand my English

I thought I had it with WiFi Tether for Root but it turned out I was still racking up data on my hotspot and not my unlimited plan.
I could really use it though.
*thugmafia, your correct, but I've got a 14GB tethered promo..

Use Siraltus' rom, the one that says debranded, debloated, deodexed, then download wifi tether router by Fabio Grassio from the playstore, works perfect, also delete system/app/upsell.apk
Ok. I deleted the upsell apk and the native tether no longer works but WiFi for tether root works. I'll see if my usage good up and report back

It has been years since I tether or used my hotspot plan that comes with my "unlimited" plan (metropcs/tmobile). I couldn't afford my cable bill this month so it was temporarily suspended. My kids freaked out, no Netflix? I assumed that I had "unlimited" hotspot with my "unlimited" plan but I guess I was wrong. I received a text that at was at 10% remaining yesterday and then the throttle began.
I received a text asking if I want more hotspot data...I clicked link. It was just offering more phones and plans. No extra hotspot plans.
So I had to resort to my old tactics and try to go around the throttle. Here were some of my tries:
1. Wifi Tether Router: I bought this last year and have always worked before. Not this time. My speeds were ridiculous slow when tethering. Developer is awesome on providing frequent updates. So I guess I have to wait.
2. PDAnet: it worked for a while but it kept resetting itself. So, I decided not to buy it.
3. Titanium BackUp: freezed native apps- my account, name id, tethering provision
Still throttled.
Will report if I found a solution. But will be paying my cable bill first.

From my understanding there is really no way around the slowdown once Tmobile flags your account for tether disablement. Some data usage is counted towards your pool of tether alotment even if you use those workarounds .Once your billing cycle starts over and tethering provision is reset than you will be able to tether a lot longer as long as you use one of the apps you mentioned earlier .You may need to freeze the Tmobile.adapt app with Titanium back up I think that's one of the system apps used to monitor your tether usage ..like I said not all data is masked so some seepage will happen but you will be able to tether longer ........hope I helped

Have you tried adjusting the TTL option in Wifi Tether Router? I read that worked.
I have an unlimited plan that was grandfathered back ages ago. I currently have a Nexus 6p and root it to get wifi hotspot and tether all the time and my provider has never said anything. I really don't see the point in upgrading to the tether plan, but the 6p and other phones I've had always block you from the hotspot unless you PAY for a tether plan. If I intend to not root a phone, how do I go about tethering? Just buy an unlocked version of a phone, or do they still have the issue also? Can any Android phone let you tether without root?
