I have an unlimited plan that was grandfathered back ages ago. I currently have a Nexus 6p and root it to get wifi hotspot and tether all the time and my provider has never said anything. I really don't see the point in upgrading to the tether plan, but the 6p and other phones I've had always block you from the hotspot unless you PAY for a tether plan. If I intend to not root a phone, how do I go about tethering? Just buy an unlocked version of a phone, or do they still have the issue also? Can any Android phone let you tether without root?

[Q] Is there a way to tether on AT&T without them putting me on the tethering plan?
I'd like to tether my phone's data to my tablet, but I don't want to pay for the tethering plan. I know this probably gets asked a lot, but I couldn't find anything related to any apps being undetected by AT&T or anything.
I'm already rooted and running CM7, so I don't care if it requires root, I just want to be able to tether for free.
I think that the wireless tether app(you can get it for free in the market) does that it requires root but ax you said you dont cate since you are on CM.

Hello, this is noob question, my friend just upgraded his iphone 3g to Samsung galaxy note. He still has the old unlimited data plan, and he wanted use the wifi hot spot, but they told him, in order to use the wifi hotspot feature, he has to give up the unlimited data plan...which he does not want to....is there any way for him to keep the unlimited data plan and use the wifi hot spot feature through rooting and through SU?

You can easily tether your unlimited phone. Verizon has an add-on to your plan that permits it.
OK, I know. You want to do it without paying.
Yes, it's quite possible, apparently.
I have an exhibit t599n I have installed at least 3 roms to see if I can bypass this provider but every time I go to tether I get a message from the provider saying I have to pay an additional 10 dollars to tether whats up with this what are all these roms doing they sure are not working for what its soposed to do bypass the provider. Can someone tell me if im doing something wrong. thanks in advance
Cyonagenmod has a free tether and WiFi spot enabled right in the rom. I am running cm11 m10. I use metro pcs which puts a 5gb limit on data in order to get the WiFi hotspot. But, I have the unlimited 4g lte plan AND hotspot. Thank you cyanogenmod!!!!
I've been using FoxFi for years and love it. But since FoxFi doesn't work with Android 7.0 and it's only a matter of time before I accidentally install the update I've been considering paying for VZW's hotspot. My question is will it basically be the same service or since I will be on their plan will I be more noticeable to them? I use 100+gb a month. My hotspot is my only internet access using it for Playstation Vue, MLB Premium, Netflix, etc. I'm on the original UDP.
I figured I'd have to pay for the hotspot at some point.
