Best G5 variant in U.S.? - LG G5 Questions & Answers

I am replacing my G5 due to signal reception problems. I may have to purchase if it is not covered on extended warranty. Thinking I will stick with the G5 since I have 360 cam, spare battery, case, and the price is low now. I am on T-mo with an H830 model. Wondering if I should buy the same or a different variant. Any thoughts?
Thanks

If you are talking about GPS signal reception, than thats a manufacturing defect affecting mostly all G5 models.
If you are talkimg about cellular reception, then you have no choice other than the H830, unless you can import a europian unlocked H850 if you want quicker official software updates, I'd assume you'll root it afterwards you buy the phone, ao just stick with another H830.

[Q] LG G5 H820(At&t variant unlocked) or Rs988(North american variant unlocked)?

I'm planning to buy my new phone since my Lg g4 occurred a boot loop issue recently. I purchased a Huawei honor 5x and I'm not satisfied, (LG g4 is far more superior than honor 5x sorry) and planning to upgrade to G5. I saw a deal on B&H, LG G5 Rs988(North american variant unlocked) with charging cradle, extra battery and $50 B&H gift certificate for only $399. Then last night, I saw a new deal from B&H which is LG G5 H820 (At&t variant unlocked) for only $339. What should i get, The h820 or the rs988? Do these variants received a nougnat update with no issues? Just disregard the bundle i really don't care with the bundle. I just want to have a phone no problem at all (in terms of LTE and gps since image retention can be fix). And I'm planning to use T-Mobile sim card for my new phone and I'm hearing some issues that their LTE doesn't work. Please help me on choosing between H820 (At&t variant unlocked) and Rs988 (north american variant unlocked). And i'm from California if this is needed. Thank you so much!
...
I have owned the RS988 first then swapped to the H820 as LTE was a nightmare to get working on AT&T using the RS988, plus the H820 has Wifi calling and one other thing I forgot that made the jump worth it for me. H820 does have AT&T bloatware on it, but it's manageable. Neither model has root or Android Nougat yet. Neither work with the B&O Hi-Fi DAC module, nor have FM radio. I can't talk about T-Mobile working or not. Those are my experiences for you!

thanks for the reply! i already bought the rs988 from b&h since they have a deal $449 with free battery cradle, extra battery, lg cam plus, lg 360 vr and free expedited shipping. so i grabbed it. i dont really use the wifi cqlling but that is a big plus. but i saw that all frequency of tmobile is supported by rs988 so i hope there will be no problem in Lte haha. i hope LG provide a nougnat update for both h820 and rs988. thanks a lot!

RE: Recommended Vendors - V30 (Verizon)
Does anyone know when the V30 may be available from Amazon (Verizon Version)? Thanks.
Also - any other recommendations for where to purchase the Verizon V30 from - looking for a vendor who has a longer return policy in case I don't care for the phone.
Thanks.

Good question. Not even most NY AT&T retailers have it in stores. I've been all around southern NY looking. No dice. I'm starting to think it doesn't exist and the internet has fooled me haha

Why are you switching back to G6? Are there any issues with V30?

The V30 is what the G6 SHOULD have been. Better CPU, and ALL the specs: more storage, Quad DAC, Qi wireless charging -- which LG only put in a few G6 and there was no model that had it all. They did make a G6+, but only the South Korea G6+ had all the specs, but it still had the Snapdragon 821.
With the Snapdragon 835 you have must faster CPU and gigabit modem speeds.

#1. the g6 for me feels better in hand, I've got average sized hands and for a 5'8 guy. it's not that the phones huge or my hands are donald trump small.
but I really like the security and the solidity of the build of the g6. the 100% flat screen and the thicker sides. I'm very outdoorsy person and I really don't want to risk dropping or breaking my phone when reaching for it to take photos. I love the camera, the speed, the PLED screen. the v30 is amazing basically everything about it beats the g6. The camera software, the bluetooth music quality. IDC about the Q-dac truly. I use 64gb Sd card anyhow so the v30 being 64gb internal over the 32gb of the g6 is not a big deal.
But think about it would I rather have a "better" phone as a daily driver that I'm constantly worrying about dropping or breaking or a SOLID 100% great phone that I have no worries over and also the
v30 is seemingly a SOB to get a nice GLASS screen protector for. I've ordered 5 from amazon and shall see which ones work with cases without being too small to fit the full screen. I hate the ones with gaps on the side. There's no issues at all with the v30 100% great phone 2017 flagship. the g6 is a great phone but a year late truly .but I'm okay with that. I'd rather not have a great phone that I possibly break vs a really good phone that i've got no issues with.

buying another phone

Hello guys my screen on my h932 is messed up and even though i love this phone i dont want another lg phone nor want or need a 1000 dollar phone all i need is a phone that is as vanilla as possible and can play good music like the v30 does.

Don't think there's any non LG phone with this good audio. Try and see if Axon phones have a high quality dac
Otherwise I'd say redmi k20 pro is a pretty solid phone for the price of around 350$
I was also thinking about maybe replacing the screen but i see that tmobile v30 costs almost the same as a replacement screen

Get another V30 -- especially V30+. Are you a T-mobile customer? Even T-mobile customers often use US998 instead of T-mobile H932. The Dev who rooted the T-mobile H932 sold it, briefly got a crappy OnePlus, then came back to V30 but got US998 V30+. He's a T-mobile customer.
You can get MINT US998V30+ for like $130 on eBay.

Edit: ordered already that quality of music from v30 cant keep me away from it
I cracked my V30 screen too, couldn't stand looking at it anymore so I grabbed a mint condition V40 for $180. The screens only .4 inches bigger but that lil bit makes a huge difference. Plus the colors/resolution are much better too. V50 is nearly identical except for 128GB vs 64GB, a lil bigger battery and 5G, everything else is same, chip, RAM, screen, size.. Still use the V30 though for root apps.
This is what I would get if my V30 died today:

Nah. Notch.
If you're going to get a 2018 LG 64GB Snapdragon 845, get the LG V35 not the V3l40
V35 is a V40 in a V30 case, but with no notch.
V35 is also less expensive than the V40, but same internal specs. Not only sold by AT&T, but Amazon, several Latin America variants and North American Open Market, all of which can be cross flashed.
Drawback is the only ones available are 64GB. I have one mint, still in the box.
Brazil got 128GB V35+, but I can't get one online.

EU V40 has the LG official bootloader unlock.
All others including V35 have paid root through TeamViewer, which may or may not include Bootloader Unlock. People remote into your PC and work on your phone through your PC. Costs like $20, I think?
Or you can buy a used phone, already rooted from China seller.
This is why V35 in particular never took off in this forum (unlike V30), and has no custom ROMs, etc.
Dev runningnak3d started working DYI Bootloader Unlock and Root on the V35, then gave up.
V35 is a better phone than the V40. It's sad that LG caved into the notch on the V40.

Now $125 from same seller:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/LG-V30-US998-128GB-Titan-Black-Unlocked-Smartphone-9-10/183795406681
Got my baby it looks brand new
I am in the same boat: My H932 V30+ is finished, digitizer got wonky to the point where I couldn't use it anymore. I didn't want to spend $150 to repair it this time, but also not sure what to choose instead.
Following are my thoughts:
1) I love V30+ and would buy another in a heartbeat if I could get a new one at a reasonable price with 2 years warranty. Between my wife's and my own V30 I've seen enough issues that I want (need) that warranty. Buying used or "seller refurbished" I'd assume that either the battery is in poor shape, OR the phone has been opened and lost IP68, OR both. I don't trust ”mint" to mean anything other than "no deep scratches". I am not ruling it out, but it has to be cheap compared to the alternatives.
2) I always found V35 a great alternative, being a V30 with 6GB/SD845. I really kick myself for not buying one of those unlocked Cricket/AT&T units for $149 last summer. Right now it's probably my best bet at ~$275-300 new (2 years warranty). Downsides are just 64GB (not much on an A/B slot phone). And it would be an AT&T model which cannot be updated without cross-flashing -- which will lose that 2 year warranty anyway. Non-AT&T variants (ULM/GFI) are overpriced.
3) I've looked at G8, which is now $4-500 new for TMO/AT&T variants (more for factory unlocked QM7 variants). Solid specs with 6GB/128GB/SD855. It also supports Band 71 which I would like: If TMO ever goes live with B71 where I live, I'll switch my Red Pocket plan from AT&T to TMO and gain VoLTE. (V30 and V35 don't have B71, except H932 which I would never buy again). But G8 price is still too high for me. And I hate that power button on the side, love V30's fingerprint/power combo on the back. I am OK with G8's form factor and notch, although not as elegant as V30/V35. I also found my V30 screen to be better than G8, even after adjusting color and brightness settings.
4) I don't really need root: I can uninstall bloat and trackers with ADB, and I am more concerned about warranty anyway. But I hate not having the OPTION to root after the warranty period. That of course means V30 > V35 > G8: I don't expect G8 will ever get root. I am not ruling out remote root of V35, though I dislike it as much as the next guy. And I doubt there will ever be custom ROMs to keep V35 relevant after LG stops updating.
5) Unfortunately Quad DAC is less of a priority for me than it was: In just a couple months Meniere's disease has killed my ability to listen to music at anything but the most rudimentary level. I am still hoping I can beat it or improve it over time, so having the Quad DAC would be nice. But if such a wonderful thing were to happen, I could just buy a USB DAC or Shanling M0. Most of my listening is (was) at home anyway.
6) I checked OnePlus 7T in a TMO store and would consider it (not from TMO, of course) if it cost less (currently $599); and more importantly, if the form factor wasn't so ridiculous: It's narrower than V30 and about 12 inches long (well, maybe not quite ) The OnePlus notch is the best I've seen, and I could live with it.
I've been using my old Nexus 5 backup phone for the last few weeks, hoping some deal will come out to sway me one way or another. But that may not happen until after MWC in late February...
Any thoughts or input are much appreciated.
Edit: I saw the eBay listing linked by @ChazzMatt and wrote the seller to ask if he can say anything about battery and whether the phones have been opened. I imagine he bought them bulk, so may not be possible for him to answer -- which I can understand.

Does it worth buying LG V30+ in 2020?

Hi! Since 2015 i have LG Nexus 5X. last year suddenly it turned off . after a lot of research i found out the memory chip was corrupted( I faced DemiGod crash handler). So considering my limited budget, i bought a Galaxy A30s. Now i wanted to know, does it worth to sell my A30 and buy an A+ graded Refurbished Lg V30+?
I know it's a great phone. but i worried about some issues such as mainboard problem, DRam or BLOD or Emmc problem. did you faced any hardware issues?
Hello! I bought my LG V30+ last year. It was a ls988 converted to us998. In 2020 there's more phones available from previous years at a great price and probably more modern. Still, The LG V30+ is by far one of the best smartphones I've ever had. I've owned Sony, Motorola, Samsung, Alcatel and decided to give up on Samsung and try the V30. In 2020 it still performs solid. I personally haven't had any hardware issues with it. It has been dropped and submerged and still standing strong. A friend of mine also bought one and no issues so far. If you can get a good deal I would go for it, as this phone might be a bit old but the plus' s it has make it worth it. Camera is beautiful, battery is great, audio is top notch, screen still looks modern by today's standards. Some people have mentioned problems with the Oled panel having burn in but I haven't noticed anything wrong so far.

Hi! Thank you for your answer! So do you recommend me buying it? I can buy Lg V40 too with some extra bucks. What do you think? and I'm understand that there's newer phones available on the market. But since i live in Iran i don't have access to any of that. We just have Samung And Xiaomi. i wanted a premium phone with metal fream and Oled display. I looked at Lg V series phones and they seem Ok with me. Again, I'm just too worried about hardware issues specially the Motherboard(Mainboard)

I'm sorry but I don't have enough knowledge about the V40 to comment on it. The V40 does look like a better phone and it has android Q, which the V30 only has through Lineage or so. Considering the "limited budget" I would go recommend the V30. It has android Pie which is still pretty modern. Has the oled panel and feels very premium on hand. I don't think you will have any Motherboard issues with it. Just make sure the bands of the network you will be using in Iran are supported by the phone.

I just bought two refurbished V30+ earlier this year (US998 converted from LS998). One to replace my V30 H932 on which the touchscreen had worn out after two years. The other as backup phone, either for myself, or for my wife who also has a H932 (2.5 years old, with no problems).
I agree, I think it's a great phone for the money, still quite modern as mentioned. V40 is quite a bit bigger, but otherwise many of the same benefits. If you can get a good deal on V35, that is perfect in many ways: The same CPU as V40, 6GB RAM and same great form factor as V30. Only problem is that V35+ models (with 128GB storage) are very rare.
V35 used to be difficult to root, but I believe that has now been cracked. V30 is easy to root, as long as you stay away from H932 (T-Mobile model).

H932 isn't really that hard to root. It's just tedious because it requires you booting a linux system.

Hell yeah. Tbh I couldn't even think of any phone better that LGV30 that matches my needs. LGV30 has all good features like wireless charging, usb-c, expandable storage, 2k oled screen, bluetooth(can't believe I have to include this under good features lol) and my personal favorite feature, the quad dac( if you are an audiophile, you will really appreciate this) GPU might be dated but I don't game on smartphones anyway so this part is subjective. Also this is the last LG phone with a decent amount of development and not locked down to the core so you can extend its life even more. LGV35 has some development going on sure, but it's really few compared to LGV30. In this age of smartphones getting more expensive with less features. LGV30 is the perfect smartphone for me.

* 64GB (V30) or 128GB (V30+) internal storage
* microSD port for additional storage
* bootloader unlock and root (all variants)
* no notch
Different variants have different LTE bands, but here's the US998:
US998
CDMA: 800 MHz CDMA
2G GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
3G UMTS (HSPA):850/900/1900/2100 MHz
4G LTE Bands: 1/2/3/4/5/7/12(17)/13/20/25/66

These phones are like slippery fish with glass backs.
That case is actually slim but very good.

H932 isn't really that hard to root. It's just tedious because it requires you booting a linux system.

It's a significantly more involved root procedure AND more things that can go wrong. If you've been following the H932 root and H932 ROM threads you'll see we have a higher incidence of users getting in trouble, losing Download mode or TWRP, and bricking their phones. Plus even after root, you have to be more careful about which ROMs you flash and how. And you have less flexibility in what you can do afterwards.
Sure, I rooted my H932 too, and it went well. But since getting a US998 (converted LS998) it's just so much easier, so many more things I can do. I just flashed H931 ROM on it last night to get AT&T WiFi calling, something that would never be possible with H932.
So if the OP comes across a good deal on a T-Mobile H932, I would NOT recommend it. Any other V30 I would. And that's what this thread is about.
IMHO, the the LG V30+ is a great phone, with exception the selfie camera. The primary camera is great, and so is the secondary wide field camera. But If taking selfies is a big deal to you, there are better choices. Another issue with buying a 2017 phone in 2020 is that the battery health might be an issue being 3 years old. If you are in an international market, a used Samsung galaxy a51 or a71 might be a good choice also, with good cameras, always on display, but no wireless charging.

I agree selfie pics are not on par with the new devices, speaker audio is not clean and 3300mah battery is not enough in 2020 otherwise it's a good device if you can get it for the right price :good:

Speaker audio is clean. See what is using your battery. Over in the custom ROMs threads one guy is getting 21 hours of battery life.
Don't care about selfies, but latter Oreo improved them tremendously over Nougat and early Oreo. Also turn on the skin smoothing a LITTLE bit, not a lot or it looks fake.
Right now this is the best phone you can buy for the price with these features.
LG V30/V30+
* 1440P OLED (537 ppi)
* Qi wireless charging
* 3.5mm headset jack
* Quad DAC
* DTS 3D stereo (with root to enable LG libs)
* FM Radio
* IP68 dust/water resistance
* rear camera OIS on normal lens - plus 120 degree wide angle lens
* superfast fingerprint sensor

Don't think all those users are mistaken too regarding battery

I'm not on Pie. I'm on rooted Oreo. So your point is moot. I'm not defending stock Pie in any way.
Also I mentioned rooted custom ROMS for the extraordinary (21 hours) battery life. Try reading again next time? .
I'm very impressed with stock battery life in Oreo and I can give you a thousand quotes on that.
Go up to the Screen On Time thread...
https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-v30/review/screen-time-t3664947
It's a whole thread devoted to battery life and how excellent it is in this phone. Like this from 2020:

Battery: 100% - 5% in 1d 6h

Everything stock OREO.
I constantly make 7h 45m SOT.

Bought Another V60 And It Weighs Completely Differently

Hey Guys,
I just had to buy another v60 because I had purchased an AT&T version while using T-Mobile. The phone works until July when Tmo phases outs some legacy bands. So I bought a proper T-Mobile LG V60. I went all out and bought a genuine new one and its great but I noticed it weighs A LOT LESS than my previous AT&T. Its weighs 7.6oz, which matches specs, so I'm not worried, but its my older AT&T I'm wondering about, it weighs 8.2oz! I always thought it was heavy and just attributed it to the 5000mah batt. Can anyone with an AT&T confirm that theirs is also that heavy(8.2oz)??
It's possible that the difference in weight is due to the modem (i. e. CDMA vs. GSM, if that applies). Other than that, I don't know what else could be the cause.

Ok thanks for the input. It's like a brick compared to my new phone. It even stays cooler longer because of the extra mass when charging. I've searched the forums, reddit and Google and can't find any reference to the extra weight. I guess you wouldn't notice unless you had bought two different versions of the phone though.
