Stock Firmware or Custom Rom - Galaxy S6 Edge Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everybody.
My dad has an S6 Edge G925F. He's been using it for about 2 years. It has some problems now. For example there is no ring tone. I mean if he receives a call the phone vibrates only. If I wipe the cache it rings for a few hours and stops again.
Secondly the back button does not work properly.
My question is, is it better to flash a custom rom or a stock firmware?
Isn't it going to have the same problems again if I flash the stock Firmware?
Kind Regards
Simon

Look into custom ROMs and decide for yourself.
Many S6 Custom ROMs are so buggy that staying on Stock is more than wise...

For your dad, stock is the best option. I would recommend to just upgrade or downgrade the firmware, backup and reset everything (wipe all, clean flash, etc), and flash a newer or older firmware through odin. If the problems still persist, try custom roms like odexlite, etc.. I flash custom roms onto my s6 edge every now and then and right now, all I can say is that stock is giving me better battery life, lower temperature and it feels smoother, plus no noticeable bugs (if there are any). With custom roms, you'd have to check every now and then for an update if ever a bug comes up with the rom.

help with my new s2

i am from galaxy mini forum so get a galaxy s2 but how to know if it is S2 or S2 GT-i9100 o and what the diffirence?? and can you gays pleas link me to a tut aboug instaling costome recovery, which ODIN to use and so on .... last thing which is the best stable rom to use .....thanks in advance
1) Check the sticker on the phone chassis under the battery.
2) Differences between SGS2 variants ? Wikipedia.
3) Just about everything you need to know to get you started is in the Stickies.
4) There's no such thing as the "best stable rom to use". There are a heap of custom roms for the SGS2, it's an individual preference thing. And because no two people use their phone the same way or have it setup the same, and because component-wise no two phones come out of the factory exactly the same, your experience with a particular rom will most likely vary from mine.
The best thing to do is to get your phone rooted, preferably with CWM installed. This will enable you to backup, restore & flash roms/kernels in a matter of minutes. You can than try a bunch of roms for yourself. If you find you don't like a rom you try, it's easy to go back to your previous setup easily by restoring a backup; recommended regularly/before you flash anything to your phone.
ok so by flashing cwm and then a costom rom the divise will root by it self and do i have to flash a stock ics rom to install a costom ics rom??????
Lackchoo,
Flash one of Chainfire's kernels. His instructions are very clear. That will give you root and CWM, and possibly also a yellow triangle at startup which you shouldn't worry about at all.
You don't need to flash a stock ICS ROM to flash a custom ROM. After rooted, in CWM, just install the downloaded ZIP ROM file of the custom ROM. You will keep root and triangle will go away.
Ditto what the above person said about ROM's. However, you can try Cyanogen (Do a 'stable' release, not a 'nightly'), its the most 'popular' ROM in terms of numbers. One can't and shouldn't say which one is best. But for a newbie, I think Cyanogen is a good place to start. Perhaps it will give you the least issues and the most 'oohs!' for your initial newbie effort
I don't have the links with me from the smart phone, but just search 'chainfire kernel root galaxy s2' and 'cyanogen galaxy s2' and you should find the relevant thread. Read it slowly and repeatedly! I know I had to

[Q] Regarding Sudden Death

Well hereĀ“s what has been played out the latest couple of days...
I got myselfe a used S3 that was rooted and had Wanamlite ROM with the enclosed kernel flashed. I felt it was rather choppy and laggy so I flashed one of the prerooted ME7 found on XDA.
However that did not help a bit and on top of all the choppyness and the freezez I also got really poor batterylife.
So... I got some help in another thread to unroot and flashing the stock ROM with ODIN. After that the phone has been working as it should... no lagging and no freezes. Although I have the damned chip that causes the "Sudden Death" the factory reset seems to have done the job. But... WHY? Both WanamLite uses the stock kernel (right?) and the ME7 that I tried also uses the stock kernel... How is it that the "sudden Death-syndrom" disappeared after unrooting and reflashing stock?
Now to my question... a question that has been answered a thousand times before. Is it Worth to install a custom ROM with the new leaked firmware? I would really like it to be a custom version of the "official" ME7... prerooted and tweaked for best batterylife.
Any hints what to choose? Besides not getting root, perhaps the best choise would be to flash the unrooted "leaked" untouched ME7 with ODIN?
Any input would be nice!

Suggest you stick with stock and read up .

Thanx for the answers.... but you missed the point!
Witch ROM is the best is not all that important... the question is rather if my experience of the "sudden death syndrom" will perhaps return if I flash other than stock ROM.
Also... the other question was IF I want the ME7 leak... is it better to stick to the stock untouched one or a custom one, regarding batterylife and smoothness.
For a start you didn't have sds or you wouldn't still be using your phone....poor setup/corrupt data most likely cause.
If you want advice on Roms go and read the relevant threads

[Solved]Disappearing imei on XXMC firmware

We, the people over xda are power users and we are mostly like to be on the bleeding edge and love to be on the latest offerings but not always are these softwares be great for everyday use and like most of us we love roms and flash them to tweak the mobile by installing custom roms and the worst thing about installing custom roms is the fact that IMEI disappears on the installation of certain roms over the stock XXMC firmware that most of us are on and like the rest of you i am also on the XXMC firmware and lose my IMEI almost all the times i installed the custom roms and i figured out that after installing a custom roms you can install any of the custom kernels which are in the development section of the GT-S5830i like Rafael Baugis[be careful that you install only the corresponding boot.img and the corresponding modules for that], hell lock kernel and many others.. and i have tried this method many time and trust me it works fine so go ahead and flash the custom roms of ur choice and then flash a custom kernel to the mobile to get back your IMEI

[Q] Do custom roms have kernels? Like CM12

I have never installed a custom rom in my 4 year android experience. But alwaya modified stock roms. Now I have gotten tired of the stock lollipop performance on my note 3 n900. A nexus 5 is way faster than my note 3.
I am thinking about flashing CM12.1 on my note 3.
But I am scared about kernel stuff.
Do custom roms replace the stock kernel? Like CM12.1
And is it dangerous to install custom kernels.
Also
How easy it is to go to stock after custom rom?
Is it just a simple flash through odin?
I read somewhere that odin mode can also get corrupted.
I want to know
How easy it is to mess up the odin mode and Brick my device 100 percent
As far as my knowledge goes
As long as there is odin
U can flash stock rom.
Plssssss do give answers any one who is advanced in android at such a level.
It wud mean a looooot to me.

Got a new alpha and I have a few questions

So I got a new galaxy alpha (850F) which is an amazing phone by the way but i have a few questions
1) I noticed that sometimes the signal drops to 0 bars for a few seconds then comes back again, is that normal because of the metal frame or what ?
2)How much does the battery take to charge ?
3) I am still on Kitkat 4.4.4 and the lollipop OTA hasn't arrived where I live yet (I don't think it's coming anytime soon) so what's the best course of action, should I stay on kitkat ? Which official rom can I flash using ODIN ? Is there a toolkit for rooting and installing a custom recovery ?
If there are tutorials for these things I'll be thankful.
Hi Mazika2,
1) I have no idea and never experienced what you describe
2) For me battery charging takes about 1h - 1 1/2h with original charging plug (over USB on PC it takes much longer)
3) You can flash any 5.0.2 ROM via Odin.
Root 4.4.4: You can take Kingroot for example, Knox will not be tripped.
Root 5.0.2: http://www.skyneel.com/2014/09/root-samsung-galaxy-alpha-sm-g850f-by-simple-tutorial.html . Knox will be tripped.
Custom recovery: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-alpha/orig-development/recovery-twrp-2-8-clockworkmod-recovery-t2923587
Is there anything to reset knox like triangle away ?
I read a few threads about flashing stock firmware, what are modems and hidden.img ?
Which is better in terms of stability , battery, etc... kitkat or lollipop ?
And finally let's say I want to upgrade to stock lollipop using ODIN what are the steps to follow ?
sorry if these questions sound nooby .

1. Issues were noticed on this subject, mainly with 4G network. I changed to 3G and I hadn't more missed calls. I think the problem is more related to inconstant network signal than to the phone itself.
2. With the original adapter is really fast comparing with my old device. I never counted but something like one hour or less.
3. There are people who prefers Kitkat over Lollipop due to better responsiveness. Mine came already with Lollipop so I haven't comparison. For now, I don't have the need to root with custom rom's, the Alpha is superb as it is (except for the annoying touch screen issue...)

Knox can't be resetted once it is tripped! Keep that in mind. In terms of stability and battery I would say they are the same. It depends mainly on your daily usage of the phone.
Steps to follow upgrading your firmware with odin can be found here: http://www.pocketpc.ch/samsung-galaxy-s6-s6-edge-root-und-rom/226170-anleitung-flashen-firmware-odin-samsung-galaxy-s6-edge-sm-g920f-g925f.html

It's complicated, for two reasons I know of, probably more.
1) I'm not sure the chipsets in the F and the M are the same. I know, for example, that the A is Snapdragon and the M is Exynos. I think the F is Exynos, too, but I'm not positive. You'd need the same chipsets for it to work.
2) It's likely the F and the M have different modems, so if you flash F firmware on an M, you may end up corrupting your EFS folder and blacklisting your phone's IMEI on your carrier. You'd need to find out exactly what frequencies the F supports and make sure the M supports them, too. I've read there is a way around this by somehow re-loading two modem files from your phone's original firmware after installing the other phone's firmware, but I've not found step-by-step instructions that are simple enough for me to understand.
Even if those two issues are resolved, it's still dicey. I really want to find SM-G850T firmware and flash it to my SM-G850M, so we are in a similar boat. I can't even find someone who owns a SM-G850T, let alone the firmware. (I did find a question posted on another Site by an individual who said they own a SM-G850T. Unfortunately, half a dozen emails to this individual have remained unanswered.
so here is what I'm planning on doing
1) while on kitkat I'll root with kingroot without tripping knox to backup the EFS folder
2)flash official 5.0.2 using odin
3) try lollipop then decide whether to stay on it or downgrade to kitkat
I just want to know some things before doing the steps above:
1) what are modems and hidden.img in official firmwares ?
2)after rooting on kitkat, can i flash lollipop directly or do i have to flash official kitkat firmware to unroot then upgrade to kitkat ?
I don't know the answers to your questions: I'm even noobier than you!
I do know that when my SM-G850M upgraded to Lollipop, I HATED it. It ran slower and was choppy in the display animations, it cut battery life by at least a third (with no change in anything after wiping the cache), and I especially hated the new color scheme. So, I went back to KitKat. Had to do a Factory Reset to get the phone out of bootloop, but it was fine after that. EXCEPT, the Lollipop downloader reminder stayed on there and I was not able to stop the app or clear the data (those options in the Application Manager were grayed out. So, I flashed the SM-G850M with KitKat firmware from the Dominican Republic (Orange). I read somewhere that Orange was not planning on releasing Lollipop for their Alpha, so I figured this firmware would be Lollipop Downloader Reminder-Free. So far, so good.
