[DISCUSSION] Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Canadian Thread - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Guides, News, & Discussion

I just wanted to start a thread for any fellow Canadian people looking to discuss Canadian specific details of the phone.
I'm pretty excited to preorder the phone. I will most likely go to Sherway Gardens in Toronto to do it. Anyone know what the pre-order incentives will be?

Good question about the pre order stuff we never seem to get the good stuff like the US does lol
A 256gb micro sd would be sweet.
For me it wont matter i guess though since even If I get one (which im not 100% on just yet) I wont waste my money on a Canadian version with the snapdragon in it since the BL will be locked on it.
This isnt exactly Canadian specific but worth mentioning.
Honestly if you want root, twrp etc just buy a exynos version and bypass the snapdragon BS version.
Ive bought a few exynos samsungs locally here in Toronto in the past and even got my Note FE off Ebay so easy enough to buy.
They end up costing the same or less as the snapdragons anyway. My S8 plus dual sim cost less than the snapdragon version lol.
You may miss a few features like wifi calling or VOlte but small sacrifice for an unlocked bootloader really
Just my .02
sent from my Note FE, S8 plus, or S6

Might just do that. I would love to get a dual SIM version they may offer from Asia.
The only thing I was hoping for at Sherway Gardens was to be able to trade in an old clunker for 200$ off like they sometimes have. 1300$ is a spicy meatball.

Anyone know which international model plays nice with our Canadian basebands? If I remember correctly F/G variants worked well in the past, but need a confirmation.

Hi All,
I am interested in obtaining the "F" / "FD" (Dual Sim) variant of Note 8 , with a base storage of 256 GB, 6 GB or 8 GB RAM.
I know it is not available in the North American Market, but as an example, if I were to order something like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Pre-order-2...hash=item4d615eae63:m:mGiwyjAXrkDPzAr6rav0gew
The Korean Model, will it work in Canada with LTE speeds, regardless of which carrier I will be with (ROGERS, BELL OR TELUS)?
Also, is it true that the Korean Model will have a base RAM of 8 GB vs. 6 GB for all other models?
Thanks.

Any news on discounts in Canada? I see that Mobile Syrup put up a correction to the article they posted yesterday about Canadian discount?

I heard that Korean Model has dedicated S/W installed that can not be removed?
Can we flash via odin or SmartConnect or whatever utility that samsung uses to factory restore to stock firmware, so it is not bloated with carrier app(s)?
I really want to get the dual SIM Card version (also is it dual active / dual standby / dual -LTE) - what I am hoping is, I have personal A/C with ROGERS with limited data here in Canada, but my business work corp A/C is unlimited data ; so hence the reason for dual SIM Card.
Also, 256 GB comes with 8GB RAM or is it 6 GB RAM?
Thanks.

I sent them a long email (polite and detailed) about this in hopes they will. The more people who contact them (phone or email) the better but who knows. Doesn't hurt but also made mention of how the US trade-in list for that discount includes the S5 but not the Note 4 when the Note 4 came our 6 months after the S5. Also that Note 4 owners who skipped the Note 5 for the Note 7 have no alternative and should be allowed to trade-in a Note 4 as well.
Fingers crossed but I won't hold me breath. We get screwed up here in Canada all the time. If no discount then Samsung has lost me forever and the LG V30 and Pixel 2 are just around the corner as well and since I've waited this long I can wait a little longer.
Samsung needs to do something here in Canada too, I had to send my Note 7 back twice just like our friends south of us.

I had pre-ordered on the 23rd. After several emails to Sammy, I cancelled my pre-order and made it very clear that my reason was due to the lack of communication etc from Sammy Canada. I even brought up the fact that they seemed to have learned nothing from the Note 7 fiasco last year!

I am getting the Blue one from Bell. Paying the $1350 man I wish our dollar was stronger. Also login to Samsung's promotion website and pre register the micro SD card and wireless charger. Anyone else buying it out right?

Nothing about that article says the Galaxy Note is coming to AT&T.
In fact if you look at the model number, it's clear that the version that just went through FCC approval will never be sold by AT&T. Usable on AT&T - yes. Actually sold by AT&T - no.
AT&T phones have a model designator starting with SGH. SGH-I897 (Captivate), SGH-I997 (Infuse), SGH-I777 (AT&T GSII)
International generic units have a model designator starting with GT. The unit in that article is GT-I9220. So it's an international model that, while it will work on AT&T's network, will NEVER be sold by them in a contract-subsidized fashion. AT&T has NEVER sold a GT model on contract in the United states. If history is any indicator, if the Galaxy Note is ever sold by AT&T, it's going to be about a six month latency before the AT&T version drops. (See, for example, the delay between the GT-I9100 and the SGH-I777)

How would one obtain an international version for T-Mo then? Or is it a possibility that they will pick it up?
If it's like the I9100, an International variant supporting the T-Mobile bands won't exist. T-Mobile may or may not sell their own variant.
The heavy customization of the T-Mobile GS2 is a sign that you likely won't see the Note sold on contract with TMo or even any compatible with their 3G bands.
I'm happy with my Streak...even if it is still running 2.2.2, but, I'm looking at the Note also. If it gets to at&t before summer of 2012, I'll grab it.
Is it going to have a notifications led light?

yah i was loving the streak too (esp with steve's excellent builds). but i sold that for the s2, and i really miss the big screen. for me, the sgs2 feels like a downgrade hahahaha. ill be getting the note when it comes out full price. might have to sell the s2 to help pay for it

I've carried the 5" streak in a velcro closing belt loop case for over a year w/o any problems. The Note, with the 5.3" screen has less top & bottom than the streak does, so it won't be all that different

TOO Big for my taste. and too small to be a "pad"... not sure where this falls in to .. I'll be keeping my SGS2... only thing I WOULD change to is the Prime
I think the Note would be great for me, especially at work where carring even a 7" pad would be restrictive. I would use the stylus to write my notes all day long at work.

I've had the streak in my pocket every day since December 26 2010. Not an issue at all, if it is then you haven't owned one or have a very small figure or wear skinny jeans. I can't wait for the Note to come out, it will be in my pockets daily as my personal phone, along with my Atrix work phone. And BTW, the Streak is more often in my front pocket than back.
I've had the S2 since Friday and I love it. However, I have had my eye on the Note since I heard about it last month. Looks like a lucky family member will be getting my S2 once the Note come out If I don't like the Note then I'll take my S2 back, I can because I'm indian.

Get Ready!!! Verizon plans to redirect all calls on Note 7

What are your solutions to Verizon's plan to redirect calls made on the Note 7?

Verizon claims “thousands” of its customers still use the Note 7, plans to redirect all calls
Posted: 17 Jan 2017, 17:11, by Cosmin V.
In a strange turn of events, many Galaxy Note 7 buyers in the United States haven't returned their smartphones yet, even though Samsung has already taken all the necessary measures for that to happen.
The South Korean handset maker pushed software updates through all major carriers in the US, but the unlocked Galaxy Note 7 units were targeted too. The software update is meant to prevent the Note 7's battery to charge, but it will also make it impossible for the phone to register with any mobile networks.
Verizon was the last carrier in the US to push the update to Note 7 units, but it looks like this didn't convince some Samsung fans to return their phones. Verizon officials claim that “thousands” of its customers are still using the Galaxy Note 7 even after the deployment of the update that's meant to cripple them.
Somehow, these Note 7 users managed to avoid getting the update and continue to use their phones to this day. Since Verizon has already reimbursed the cost of the recalled Note 7 to all its customers, the carriers now plans to bill those who still haven't returned their phones for the full retail cost.
In spite of our best efforts, there are still customers using the recalled phones who have not returned or exchanged their Note 7 to the point of purchase. The recalled Note 7s pose a safety risk to our customers and those around them.
Furthermore, Verizon said that it will soon put all these Note 7 phones that are being used in a special category so all outgoing calls, except those made for the 911 emergency service, will be redirected to its customer service.
Verizon customers who still haven't returned their Galaxy Note 7 smartphones can still do so and receive a bill credit of up to $100 and a waived upgrade fee.

This is the official word...
Does anybody have a workaround for what Verizon is about to do?
The only way i could think of the phone still functioning would be if the network didn't recognize it as a note 7, it would then allow the phone to function as normal. I believe getting into specifics is not allowed on these forums so lets just leave it at that.

That would involve changing the individual which is not legal and possibly a build prop edit to change the name of the phone. Possible using the imei off a s7 or any Samsung with similar specs. You would pay a good price to have a note 7 unblacklisted. You'd be better off getting a goophone note 7 clone. They were more stable than the real deal when it came to being a safety hazard. But this stuff messed up there clone phone sales. A phone you can't carry no where with out someone worried about it blowing up or catching fire even though it is a clone.

It would just simply be better if they got a S7 Edge + free money for accessories instead of trying to change IMEI. On S7 Edge we've got fully working AOSP based roms(even nexus like fingerprint unlock), as well as me and my team ported FlymeOS 6 recently. Come on guys. Let go, and enjoy all the nice stuff that S7 Edge offers. Even Official Nougat.

Exactly. I went with the pixel XL. I had a note 4 when I upgraded to the note 7. That was the problem free note I had. I keep a nexus 6p as my backup. There are true to heart Samsung fans out here, just to have Samsung pay(get a gear watch to keep sampay), to keep the record front and back video at the same time, Knox, TouchWiz, . Not worth the head aches on a $800 phone that has to be modded just to make phone call out. There are way too many flag ship Android phones that have surpassed the note7 in design and performance. What is the percentage of people that take full advantage of the stylus on the note series of phone. Most don't touch it. You have the Xiaomi mi mix, Huawei mate 9 and the p9 and the honor v8.

Need Guidance using a Korean Note 8 on T Mobile

Hello guys. I bought a Korean Note 8 (N950N) and I'm currently using it on AT&T. However, because it's an unlocked phone I can't get full speed LTE on it. I've lurked around on different forums and the only resolution to this is to buy an AT&T branded phone and call their tech support and give that IMEI as your Note8 IMEI and then you'll get full speed and all the other features.
I wanted to ask you T Mobile folks if I switch carriers, do I need to jump through these kinds of hoops or do you get full LTE speeds out of the box on unlocked, korean Note 8?
Thanks in advance for your help/suggestions.
Not sure if anyone here will have the Korean version. However, the best way to know is to just put a tmobile sim card and try the speed. You can go to the store and they will help you out.

I love my Korean version of the Note 8. 500gb of phone storage (256 + 256) is handy. The only downside I've found is using Samsung Pay. I get the 'invalid sim card' and 'try again' error message. Australian Samsung Support wont offer anything more than 'contact the source country' (Korea). At least Samsung Pay is working on my Samsung S3 Frontier so i can live without it on my phone. I'm just a bit upset the ebay seller advertised that Samsung Pay would work on this international model.

Snapdragon Love Anywhere???

Last Galaxy was S6, jumped ship to iPhone 7S to please the wife, was ecstatic to go back to S9 via T-Mobile aka "Uncarrier".
I was more excited to finally go back to XDA to check the dev scene, but no love for the Snapdragon Varient? I know International aka 960/5F got the unlocked bootloader and usual Day 1 roots.... but does anybody know why the Snapdragon scene isn't active at all?
My T-Mobile S6 Edge was a breeze to root and so many amazing ROMS and Cross-Device Dev too. And that wasn't Exynos either.
Point is, I'm sure I'm not the only one and you guys arent alone out there. I'd love to see how people are enjoying their device, any dis/advantages to our international sibling, and also any tricks they're using to "poweruse" their device.
Cheers

If there were any Snapdragon versions they were not in North America. The US carriers were all Exynos. I had the Verizon version and it was most definitely Exynos. They did not want to use the 810 so I am pretty sure there were no Snapdragons anywhere for the S6.

Put simply, it's because Samsung has made the S9/S9+ SD variant EXTREMELY tamper-resistant. Old methods to achieve root that worked on, say, the S7 or S8 no longer work.
As far as I know, there's only 1 dev working at it. For now, one can only be patient and see what happens.
Other than that though, it's a solid phone that I am enjoying right out of the box. And for now, there's a working hotspot mod, so that's nice as well.
Root on g9650 Hong Kong version can be achieved (see https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...comm-sm-g9650-hong-kong-china-t3764542/page27). I think nowaday there is no way to unlock bootloader of the us variant.

That's typical though, I'd be surprised if Sammy left an old exploit open in a new flagship from an old one
I wouldn't put it past em though, the latest exploits have been pretty easy lol
It's worth noting that the SM-G9600 and SM-G9650 (the non-us unlockable Snapdragon variant s9/s9+ work perfectly on both CDMA and GSM networks in the USA, making it at last a real option for Americans
i'd be happy with the ability to do carrier switching like on the s8/s8+ and note 8

I have a dual-sim SM-G9650 (Hong Kong version) and was unable to get it to connect to CDMA in the US. Worked fine for GSM/WCDMA/LTE, but couldn't connect to ANYTHING with a Page Plus/Verizon sim. Tried Hong Kong rom and also Panama rom, and couldn't do it.
Do you have any reports of someone getting a verizon sim working in this model?

Did you ever get it to work on Verizon LTE at least? I see it supports the Verizon LTE bands. I want to get this for the dual SIM. Personal phone is TMO and company is Verizon.

Snapdragon or Exynos?

Hey guys,
I'm thinking about buying a S9+ however, I'm not sure if I should get the Snapdragon version or the Exynos version. I live in Europe so the Exynos version is the one leading the market here.
I just want to know which version has the most popularity regarding ROMs, customizations and dev support If it's the snapdragon one, I'll bust my ass off to get that one
Thanks for you answers !

Are you new to samsung? because the answer to your question is well known.
All the US and CAN snaps are bootloader locked rendering them 100% useless for development. Stay away!
The latin america and HK snaps are not locked but never see much development historically.
The exynos, as always is the one you want for roms etc and your lucky as its local for you.
I live in Canada and have to import exynos samsungs everytime i buy or buy from a company who does the same.
sent from my Exynos S9 plus, Pixel 2 XL or Note FE

The 96X0 Latin America/HK devices are seeing a lot more development this time around thanks to treble. There are already numerous standard GSI roms that work fairly well and bugs are bring fixed every day. There still is more with we exy though but if you need cdma or something the unlocked snaps aren't the wasteland they usually are
