Snapdragon Love Anywhere??? - Samsung Galaxy S9+ Questions & Answers

Last Galaxy was S6, jumped ship to iPhone 7S to please the wife, was ecstatic to go back to S9 via T-Mobile aka "Uncarrier".
I was more excited to finally go back to XDA to check the dev scene, but no love for the Snapdragon Varient? I know International aka 960/5F got the unlocked bootloader and usual Day 1 roots.... but does anybody know why the Snapdragon scene isn't active at all?
My T-Mobile S6 Edge was a breeze to root and so many amazing ROMS and Cross-Device Dev too. And that wasn't Exynos either.
Point is, I'm sure I'm not the only one and you guys arent alone out there. I'd love to see how people are enjoying their device, any dis/advantages to our international sibling, and also any tricks they're using to "poweruse" their device.
Cheers

For the record, all S6 models were Exynos. There were no snapdragon versions.

If there were any Snapdragon versions they were not in North America. The US carriers were all Exynos. I had the Verizon version and it was most definitely Exynos. They did not want to use the 810 so I am pretty sure there were no Snapdragons anywhere for the S6.

Put simply, it's because Samsung has made the S9/S9+ SD variant EXTREMELY tamper-resistant. Old methods to achieve root that worked on, say, the S7 or S8 no longer work.
As far as I know, there's only 1 dev working at it. For now, one can only be patient and see what happens.
Other than that though, it's a solid phone that I am enjoying right out of the box. And for now, there's a working hotspot mod, so that's nice as well.

Root on g9650 Hong Kong version can be achieved (see https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...comm-sm-g9650-hong-kong-china-t3764542/page27). I think nowaday there is no way to unlock bootloader of the us variant.

That's typical though, I'd be surprised if Sammy left an old exploit open in a new flagship from an old one
I wouldn't put it past em though, the latest exploits have been pretty easy lol

It's worth noting that the SM-G9600 and SM-G9650 (the non-us unlockable Snapdragon variant s9/s9+ work perfectly on both CDMA and GSM networks in the USA, making it at last a real option for Americans

i'd be happy with the ability to do carrier switching like on the s8/s8+ and note 8

I have a dual-sim SM-G9650 (Hong Kong version) and was unable to get it to connect to CDMA in the US. Worked fine for GSM/WCDMA/LTE, but couldn't connect to ANYTHING with a Page Plus/Verizon sim. Tried Hong Kong rom and also Panama rom, and couldn't do it.
Do you have any reports of someone getting a verizon sim working in this model?

Did you ever get it to work on Verizon LTE at least? I see it supports the Verizon LTE bands. I want to get this for the dual SIM. Personal phone is TMO and company is Verizon.

[Q] Rooting an unlocked device.

I am planning on getting the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 soon but I am going to buy it unlocked. Is it possible to root an unlocked phone. I have not seen any guides on Youtube or online yet that show guides on rooting a certain unlocked phone. I want to root it as soon as it is possible to root it safely. I am going to buy it unlocked but I am not going to get a plan from T-Mobile from it until January. My main question is: Is it possible to root a smartphone that does not have a sim card in it and is bought unlocked and if there is what guide do I use(like do I use the guide for how to root the galaxy note 3 tmobile edition or att edition or verizon edition.) Can someone please answer by September 4th.
It's the exact same. Locked or unlocked makes no difference.

rooting has nothing to do on your Phone Network settings. it depends on your mobile model on how you root it and not by your network carrier.

If it is like that then why do they have a specific video for how to root a Verizon Galaxy S4 or a specific video on how to root the AT&T Galaxy S4. So let's say I get a Galaxy S4. I just have to look at a video that shows me how to root my specific model like the Galaxy S4 I9500?

The video you would follow is the one for the international unlocked version. For example to root the unlocked international Galaxy S4 I would go to the Galaxy S4 I9500 section on XDA and then look for a root guide or if your looking for a video guide on site such as YouTube I would search on YouTube "root Galaxy S4 I9500" and follow the root procedure for the Galaxy S4 I9500 device model. So when you get the unlocked international version of the Galaxy Note 3 you see what model number is has and would Google or search on YouTube something similar to "root Galaxy Note 3 international" or "root Galaxy S3 (insert international unlocked edition model number here. The international edition is the standard globally carrier unlocked edition that can be used with any carrier's SIM's that support the phones radio basebands. If you still have any questions let me know and I can try and clear them up for you.

thank you that provided a good explanation. So if I buy the Galaxy Note 3 unlocked straight from Samsung I am actually getting the unlocked International version? But if I get the international version, i won't have 4G LTE. I live in the USA btw.

That is correct if you buy it straight form Samsung your buying an unlocked International version. As far as 4G LTE compatibility, Samsung is likely going to release an international unlocked model that is compatible with United Sates LTE bands on most carriers. The new trend for devices is to have global LTE capability that is compatible with LTE networks in both the U.S.A, Europe, and other places across the globe.

oh ok thank you. Do you know how much the Galaxy Note 2 was unlocked when it was released last year. This would give me an estimate on how much the Galaxy Note 3 would be. In my own opinion the jury is out on the HTC One Max as it's HTC's first attempt at a phablet format device I would have read a bunch of reviews, get users opinions, and try it out for myself before I could render any real opinion on it. That being said it does look like a promising device, however I would give the edge to Samsung because they have a proven track record of success with the Galaxy Note series of devices. And don't worry your questions are perfectly acceptable and are as far from irrelevant as it gets so keep them coming I'll be happy to answer them!

For the HTC One Maxx I would predict it to be around $800-$850 in price. The main thing that could make it more expensive then the Galaxy Note 3 is HTC likes to use "premium materials" such as machined aircraft grade aluminium.

Yeah you are correct. Do you know if they are going to be launching a Galaxy S4 with a snapdragon 800. If they do then and if I get it and root it specifically by it's model number then will I be able to find ROMS for it. My exact question is: Will the same ROMS that work for the original Galaxy S4 work with the Galaxy S4 with the Snapdragon 800 processor? I wouldn't think there would be a difference because the processor has nothing to do with the ROM but I was just wondering just in case because the Galaxy S4 with Snapdragon 800 could be classified as a totally different phone and have separate roms for it or something.

The a updated international version of the Galaxy S4 with the model number GT-i9506 containing LTE-A (LTE Advanced) and a Snapdragon 800 recently was seen in a FCC filling leading to the belief that we may see that coming to the U.S.A soon. More info on the updates Galaxy S4 can be found here. As far as ROM's are concerned, ROM's that work on the original Galaxy S4 will very likely not work on the new updated Galaxy S4 if and when it is released because as you mentioned both devices will be classified as two completely different devices with different model numbers meaning different ROM's. Even though devices have similar hardware, ROM's that are designed for a particular device model are meant to work on that device model only. Any ROM's for the old Galaxy S4 would have to be ported to work on the new Galaxy S4 if and when it is released, due to them still being two different device models.

Glad I could help, currently I do not have the power to lock threads but what you could do is edit your thread title to something along the lines of this "[Q][SOLVED]Rooting an unlocked device", that way other users who have similar questions and who are looking for similar information in the future can know that there is information that may help answer the same question they were going to ask.

[DISCUSSION] Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Canadian Thread

I just wanted to start a thread for any fellow Canadian people looking to discuss Canadian specific details of the phone.
I'm pretty excited to preorder the phone. I will most likely go to Sherway Gardens in Toronto to do it. Anyone know what the pre-order incentives will be?

Good question about the pre order stuff we never seem to get the good stuff like the US does lol
A 256gb micro sd would be sweet.
For me it wont matter i guess though since even If I get one (which im not 100% on just yet) I wont waste my money on a Canadian version with the snapdragon in it since the BL will be locked on it.
This isnt exactly Canadian specific but worth mentioning.
Honestly if you want root, twrp etc just buy a exynos version and bypass the snapdragon BS version.
Ive bought a few exynos samsungs locally here in Toronto in the past and even got my Note FE off Ebay so easy enough to buy.
They end up costing the same or less as the snapdragons anyway. My S8 plus dual sim cost less than the snapdragon version lol.
You may miss a few features like wifi calling or VOlte but small sacrifice for an unlocked bootloader really
Just my .02
sent from my Note FE, S8 plus, or S6
Might just do that. I would love to get a dual SIM version they may offer from Asia.
The only thing I was hoping for at Sherway Gardens was to be able to trade in an old clunker for 200$ off like they sometimes have. 1300$ is a spicy meatball.
Anyone know which international model plays nice with our Canadian basebands? If I remember correctly F/G variants worked well in the past, but need a confirmation.

Hi All,
I am interested in obtaining the "F" / "FD" (Dual Sim) variant of Note 8 , with a base storage of 256 GB, 6 GB or 8 GB RAM.
I know it is not available in the North American Market, but as an example, if I were to order something like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Pre-order-2...hash=item4d615eae63:m:mGiwyjAXrkDPzAr6rav0gew
The Korean Model, will it work in Canada with LTE speeds, regardless of which carrier I will be with (ROGERS, BELL OR TELUS)?
Also, is it true that the Korean Model will have a base RAM of 8 GB vs. 6 GB for all other models?
Thanks.

I heard that Korean Model has dedicated S/W installed that can not be removed?
Can we flash via odin or SmartConnect or whatever utility that samsung uses to factory restore to stock firmware, so it is not bloated with carrier app(s)?
I really want to get the dual SIM Card version (also is it dual active / dual standby / dual -LTE) - what I am hoping is, I have personal A/C with ROGERS with limited data here in Canada, but my business work corp A/C is unlimited data ; so hence the reason for dual SIM Card.
Also, 256 GB comes with 8GB RAM or is it 6 GB RAM?
Thanks.

I sent them a long email (polite and detailed) about this in hopes they will. The more people who contact them (phone or email) the better but who knows. Doesn't hurt but also made mention of how the US trade-in list for that discount includes the S5 but not the Note 4 when the Note 4 came our 6 months after the S5. Also that Note 4 owners who skipped the Note 5 for the Note 7 have no alternative and should be allowed to trade-in a Note 4 as well.
Fingers crossed but I won't hold me breath. We get screwed up here in Canada all the time. If no discount then Samsung has lost me forever and the LG V30 and Pixel 2 are just around the corner as well and since I've waited this long I can wait a little longer.
Samsung needs to do something here in Canada too, I had to send my Note 7 back twice just like our friends south of us.

I had pre-ordered on the 23rd. After several emails to Sammy, I cancelled my pre-order and made it very clear that my reason was due to the lack of communication etc from Sammy Canada. I even brought up the fact that they seemed to have learned nothing from the Note 7 fiasco last year!
I am getting the Blue one from Bell. Paying the $1350 man I wish our dollar was stronger. Also login to Samsung's promotion website and pre register the micro SD card and wireless charger. Anyone else buying it out right?

All the latin American snap devices are unlockable, not a big shock. What it weird is that sammy went with snaps not exynos in these areas for the first time. I wonder why?

Oem unlock doesnt do anything on snapdragon. As of this moment. It does not unlock the bootloader. It will allow you to flash the engboot for a dirty root but still will never unlock the bootloader on SD at least.
Check other already have a initial twrp recovery there.
Here in Brazil always have exynos, this year comes with snapdragon, but is a good thing. Better battery, better games perfomance
OEM unlock does not mean its bootloader unlockable or rootable. The exynos variants always comes bootloader unlock along with OEM unlock, but Snapdragon never comes with bootloader unlocked - it is not Samsung, I believe it is Snapdragon issue, they do not allow nor release their kernel code, that's why you will never see root on Snapdragon devices.
I always went with exynos device, but this time because S9/S9+ exynos devices battery issue, screen issue, etc...way too many issues, that's why I went with US unlocked snapdragon version

Actually the s7, note 8 and s8 snaps all got root.
It was a hacked root and problematic and limits charging to 80%. No twrp or kernels or custom roms though
And no issues with my exynos, baffery life close to par with my pixel 2 xl

It's only available for international exynos variants (F/DS/N) and the Asian Snapdragon variant G9650.

I meant to order the Exynos G965F for the unlocked bootloader, but ordered the G9650/DS. Are you sure the 9650 variant bootloader can be fully unlocked to use custom roms? If so I might just stick with that one considering all the battery issues I am hearing about the Exynos...I just ordered yesterday actually and still have time to change the order before its shipped.

Yes it should be unlockable but historically the HK versions get very little if any development. So you would maybe have root and twrp but next to no roms...which really makes an unlocked BL somewhat pointless.
Id honestly get the exynos.

it is one of the beta firmware leak helped that, and as you said, no twrp, kernel, no custom ROMs....what's the point of having it? not able to fully charge..etc.....I do not call that 'real' root..

I agree, not what i would want on my device anyway.
If you want proper root, development etc you buy exynos despite maybe not getting a fee features out of the like wifi calling etc
If not then buy a snapdragon.

I had chance to get either unlocked snapdragon or exynos version of S9+, but opt for snapdragon, since there's several issues with exynos version of S9/S9+....and I knew all along that getting snapdragon means no root at all, but over the years (i rooted all my devices) I start needing less and less having rooted device...

Ive read about the issues and yet i dont see them on my device, i stopped believing what i read a long time ago lol.
You may get root but it wont be magisk or SU and there will be issues with it.

you must be one of the lucky one, after my Note 5, and going for S9+, and paying premium $$, I just did not want to take risk with Exynos version - you know what I meant.. I will use it for a few months and see if I still need root, if I do, then sell it and get Exynos version
The root on my s7 edge did not limit charging to 80% but yes the eng boot did cause so ridiculous lag but it was still usable I would trade off the lag for. Root as long as get my external storage back stupid it not accessible to all apps

Snapdragon or Exynos?

Hey guys,
I'm thinking about buying a S9+ however, I'm not sure if I should get the Snapdragon version or the Exynos version. I live in Europe so the Exynos version is the one leading the market here.
I just want to know which version has the most popularity regarding ROMs, customizations and dev support If it's the snapdragon one, I'll bust my ass off to get that one
Thanks for you answers !

Are you new to samsung? because the answer to your question is well known.
All the US and CAN snaps are bootloader locked rendering them 100% useless for development. Stay away!
The latin america and HK snaps are not locked but never see much development historically.
The exynos, as always is the one you want for roms etc and your lucky as its local for you.
I live in Canada and have to import exynos samsungs everytime i buy or buy from a company who does the same.

The 96X0 Latin America/HK devices are seeing a lot more development this time around thanks to treble. There are already numerous standard GSI roms that work fairly well and bugs are bring fixed every day. There still is more with we exy though but if you need cdma or something the unlocked snaps aren't the wasteland they usually are

I Need To Purchase A S9+ With A Unlocked Bootloader What One Do I Choose

Hello i have owned my galaxy S9+ (SM-G965U1) for about a year now. Problem is that One UI has completely ruined my life and my entire experience with my phone. Back when it ran Oreo it was near perfect.
So i need help figuring out what the best S9+ with a unlocked bootloader is and where i might be able to buy them new that is.
My plan is to buy one with a unlocked bootloader so i will never have to deal with the piece of human excrement that is One UI
Thank you, this was the funniest post in forever. It has ruined your life. Omg, thank you!
Any Exynos model cam be rooted.

Yes believe it or not it has truly made my life miserable. I don't understand why companies try to fix stuff that isn't broken.
To answer your question the snapdragon SM-G9650 varient Is OEM unlockable it is China, Brazil etc basically international version and any of the Exynos
Are I believe.
Exynos is good for development only as long as the official android is upgraded. But it's closed source with sammy proprietary blobs.
I've got a Note4 Exynos and officially it was upgraded to MM. Only because of months and years of miraculous work of a couple of developers, it's working (with a few hiccups) with TW nougat and up to oreo Lineage.
If you want to change the phone and got the cash after 2 years (or 3? ) of major upgrades from Samsung, then Exynos is OK.
As for me the OP7 (pro maybe) can cut a better deal. Huge deving possibility. And ain't got too much money to change the phone too often.
Good luck.

Yes that's the one there's also supposedly a dual SIM card version around that has 128GB and up but don't know where you get it or much beyond it's existence
But the one you linked is what I have currently.
