Voice calling disabled on GSM service - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a CDMA Samsung Note 3. The phone can run on GSM networks just fine. First initial problem I had was I couldn't get any signal strength to do anything. Now I can text and use data, however attempting to place a call immediately ends like within a second. What setting would cause this to happen?

[Q] Has anyone been able to place calls in 'EvDo only' mode?

So using the secret menu, I was trying different methods to see what signal strengths I was getting at my place, same spot. Interesting enough, the signal strength bars are different when using CDMA auto prl (4-bars) and EvDo only (2-bars) mode, even though I still see the 3g icon. Also, it seems the 1x radio is always on in every mode except EvDo only, plus I tried calling using all 5 modes.
Thus far, (1-yes, 0-no) I can make a call in mode:
CDMA auto PRL - 1
CDMA only - 1
EvDo only - 0
CDMA + LTE/EvDo - 1
LTE only - 1
so my question is, why can't I (and is anyone able to) make calls over EvDo only mode? When I place one, it hangs for a sec, and ends automatically saying "Call was lost". I was hoping to get better call quality (even if I can't have 4g speed), cuz right now calls sometimes sound muffled (but clear enough to understand), compared to when I had my nexus one on t-mo. (I tried eHRPD and EvDo-rev.a modes to no avail)
PS I know (atleast I read somewhere) that the T-Bolt cannot support calls over LTE itself, or VoLTE as it's called (unless if that's changed or I am wrong.)
Any thoughts? your experiences? I just want to get ppl's thoughts on this.
So... I guess no answers then?
Well, EvDO-only would not permit any voice calls because you've told the radio to only operate with a data signal. EvDO, or "Evolution-Data Optimized", is the 3G data component of CDMA wireless networks, so without a preferred network mode that includes CDMA you won't have any voice service.
when i had my phone on evdo only (stupidly thinking it was 1x) i couldn't make or receive any calls
evdo handles data, 1x handles calls/sms

Right. CDMA = 1x data and voice EVDO = data only. If you force the phone into a data only mode, voice will not function.

1. Disable Mobile data, then wait for 3-5 minutes
2. Enter Service mode, then change network to WCDMA only, repeat it like 2 times.
Done.
Correctly good luck...

my problem is described here -Can others be so kind as to verify if they are also having an issue with receiving voice calls or SMS while their phones are using the 2G network for data access. (3G and wifi either unavailable or turned off.)
We have this issue with Orange and I have tested it on one Sunrise iphone4 and we had the same issue. Which is not surprising since Orange and Sunrise are operated by the same staff. It does work correctly over Swisscom.
I raised this case with Orange over one month ago and they still have given me no concrete feedback as to why their network behaves like this.
(FYI this is a network issue and not related to any phone configuration).
Feel free to harass Orange about this. It might get them to pull their fingers out a bit. When I raised the case it took me about 10 calls to their support plus 2 visits to Orange shops to finally get a technician who was capable of understanding this simple but critical issue.
EXACT STEPS LEADING TO PROBLEM:
1. Force phone to use GSM (2G) mode only or be in an area with no 3G coverage, or if your phone chooses to use the 2G network
2. Disable switching to wifi:
3. Connect to 2G packet data, download email or download webpages: Status Bar-> spinning wheel
4. While packet data is connecting, using another phone place a call to your phone
5. After packet data has connected, using another phone place a call to your Phone
EXPECTED OUTCOME:
You expect the packet data connection to either DROP or be SUSPENDED (depending
on network capabilities) and for the phone to ring indicating an incoming call or SMS.
ACTUAL OUTCOME:
The packet data connection persists and remains active; the phone does not ring
and the call is handled by the network as if the phone was unreachable (for most
users this means forwarding to voicemail).
REPRODUCIBILITY:
always; no exceptions.
This has been tested extensively on the Orange network by me and many other users.
Tested devices which all show the same issue, iPhone4, iPhone3GS, Iphone 3G, several Android models.

Should Rezound show signal bars with no SIM card?

Here's the deal, I bought my Rezound in 2012 and flashed it to PagePlus Cellular using CDMA WS.
I've used it and it's been fine, running CM10 most of the time. I just bought a Evo 4G LTE and switched to that. So I RUU'd my Rezound, and it says a SIM card is required, etc.. but there are no signal bars.
I go into About Phone > Network >
and Operater name is "Unknown," signal strength is "0", service state is "out of service."
Now, the question is, is that normal? Does the phone need a sim card to connect to verizon towers?
I don't want to sell it while it's not working. I did call up Verizon and they said the ESN was clear for activation though.
So if I sell it and the new user puts in a SIM card, will it clear up all the signal issues? Or have I done the RUU incorrectly? [I did it a couple times because it didn't work the first time (the SD card method, then I did fastboot method)]
Thank you!
That is not normal behavior and you may need to do some more work before you sell it.
Make sure all related network settings are correct for Verizon instead of GSM under Settings > Mobile Network menu.
Try entering on the stock dialer *#*#4636#*#* to access the hidden testing menu as well for the phone radio and verify it is on CDMA. If that code doesn't work on the dialer try it via an app like "Hidden Menus" or even "Battery Monitor Widget" by 3C (click "Tests" icon > Phone information from main page of app.)
Background: I broke off of my Verizon contract six months in and used my phone as a WiFi-only device (VoIP and internet texting apps) for the longest time. While I typically hid my signal icon and ran the phone in Airplane mode with WiFi toggled back on, I would occasionally turn my radio on to resync time and date to the cellular network. With no SIM in it clearly was syncing off Verizon CDMA signal still; I simply wasn't fully activated on the network any longer.
I just made the StraightTalk AT&T SIM card plunge the past couple of weeks and did an NV edit in CDMA WS as well, all alright on GSM. I am on the stock global ICS ROM at the moment, one I know could sync time on CDMA before. However, I cannot get the phone to switch off of GSM even in the hidden testing menu, even without SIM in... Likely has to do with the NV edits I made, and perhaps that may be your case too.
You *could* repurpose the sale as a GSM enabled unit... If it was even set up and working well as such. But due to the current technical issues of getting GSM mobile data above 2G I'd suggest to get it fixed and working back on stock CDMA for the consumer's sake if you can. Again AFAIK It should pick up a CDMA signal even without active service or the Verizon LTE SIM in, did so for over a year lol.

in the mobile network, I have it set to "CDMA / LTE" but I tried "CDMA only" and "Global" but none worked.
*#*#4636#*#* didn't work in stock dialer, it just disappeared when I finished typing it.
then I downloaded Hidden Menu, found *#*#4636#*#* in the list, tapped it, and it did nothing. I did some other ones and they did do something. I found htc diag mode, the same one I used to program it originally. I clicked read, and the phone number and min were blank. so I went to the prl and tried flashing a verizon prl file, then rebooted, and still nothing.
I'm going to try to RUU again and hope that solves it.
Update
I RUU'ed again, but still no luck..
Can anyone confirm whether or not, say you got a Rezound out of the box never activated, would you need a SIM card to get the signal initiated? I'm thinking either that's the case and my phone just needs a sim card to jump start it, or my rezound is toast.

LG G3 successfully installed CyanogenMod 12, but having SIM issues.

I successfully installed CyanogenMod 12 on my LG LS990, but I'm having some problems involving the SIM card. My carrier is Cricket (or AT&T), and I am able to send and receive calls and text messages, as well as download and browse the internet. The speeds are very fast.
However, it gets wonky most of the time. On the notification menu for my G3 as well as the phone setting, it is still listed as Sprint. It will also turn off randomly and show an "R" at the top and will glitch out. On several occasions, a pop-up will show up and say something like "com.phone.android has stopped working" and the bars at the top will disappear all together. This seems to happen when I turn the display off or put it to sleep
On the mobile data settings,I have put data roaming on, LTE, CDMA roaming to automatic and "NV". I am not sure what most of these settings mean, but on the access points menu " cricket" is checked. I cannot change the NV setting to SIM.
I receive notifications from Cricket. Texting and Calling works completely fine. I'm wondering why it stops working for a while when I put the phone to sleep or why everything is listed as Spring when it isn't. Thanks.

S9+ will only make/receive voice calls in duo mode

Just what the title says. My phone tells callers that I'm not accepting calls and when I attempt to make calls it simply refuses to do so or displayed a "call ended" message without ever dialing the other person. Everything else works fine and I can even make voice calls if I use duo mode instead of mobile. I can also receive calls if the caller uses duo mode.
Have been through everything except an actual reset. Unable to do that since the phone was a hand-me-down and I don't know the PIN. I've about reached the point where I do a hard reset manually but I hate to lose my data. Does anyone have anything I could try to either bypass or recover the PIN or something I could use to get mobile mode to work again?
Your sure you have service? If you do, do you have credit? Both of those would prevent you making calls. You can still use Duo if your on WiFi or you have a data only service. If you are showing that your connected to the network and you are certain you have minutes in your plan or credit available then you will need to call your network provider so they can see if there's any network issues preventing your calls. Check the network operators status page to see if there's issues in your area.
@Nofsdad
It appears that when using a Galaxy S9+ with ATT service the phone is unable to do VoLTE
The way that I was able to have internet on the phone and voice calling was to go into the APN and set the Network Mode to 3G/2G (auto connect)
That fixed it for me. Still pissed off that I can't use LTE but oh well it will work until I upgrade the phone.

Hello, I have an unlocked s9 that is going through a similar issue in not being able to make or receive calls. Can you let me know how you got the APN settings for 3G/2G? Going to APN settings I only see the nxgenphone setting open and active, which I heard was for LTE.
Also, can you let me know what setting it has to be in the 4636 mobile network settings in order to restore data? Thanks
