Moving pre-installed apps to SD-card (ROOTED) - Moto E Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, i'm running a Moto E with android version 5.1, and since updating to this version of android I have had constantly so little space on the internal memory that I can't even update the pre-installed apps even though I have as good as as no other apps installed on the phone as well as zero images, videos, music or any other media files.
Therefore I've spent a few days trying to figure out how I could move the pre-installed apps to my SD-card.
So, I've rooted the phone, installed the program called Link2SD and I tried using that program to move the apps. Yet it gave me a warning:
"Failure
pkg: /data/app/com.google.android.apps.maps-1/base.apk Failure
[INSTALL_FAILED_INVALID_INSTALL_LOCATION]"
Then I found that it seems I also need to create a so-called "second partition" on my SD-card, but I've not yet managed to find a tutorial on the internet that worked for me.
Since then I've tried 6 or 7 other similar programs with no luck, in the process reading somewhere that it actually couldn't even be done on android versions 4.0 or later. Is this true? Could someone be a kind gentleman (or -woman) and guide me through this? That would make me very happy indeed.
Thanks in advance
Simon

It's better to install custom rom of android 6.0 + and flash gapps pico or nano and in android 6.0 + you can format your external SD card as internal so, it'll help to use all on external storage and gapps pico also takes minimum space so you definitely saved you internal storage to be full
if you don't know how to do that stuff then you can ask...!

[Q] Motorola XT530 (2.3.5) Rooting querries

I am a Noob, so bear with me.
I went through many threads regarding XT530. links are
Code:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1218506&page=2
Code:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1271114
the first thread is said to be root XT530 (2.3.5 based) but the title goes for XT316(2.3.4). So i am a bit worried if thats alright or i got wrongly redirected over there. Moreover, the links for the files weren't working, so i need links for the files needed (like Google GMS pack).
the second thread says it will root the current android version, but i need to ask if that would install Google GMS services automatically or i need to download that pack externally.
PLus i need a few basic questions if anyone bother to answer:
1. I got just 19mb to 25mb as my internal memory constantly. i mean, i dont think i would get more than 35mb of internal memory even if i remove all apps installed. is it normal?
2. would i be able to shift apps to SD card after rooting?
3. can i overclock my phone? and if yes, what is the maximum limit?
No ine bothers to put down a single dmn answer? :\

Hello,
I know for a fact that both uper mentioned links worked fine, but i rooted my XT530 phone using the second one.
1. It is normal 19 to 25 MB of memory if u have installed a few apps, that is becouse you have preinstalled lot of useless junk which you cannot uninstall even if you have rooted your phone. I'm hoping that cianogenmod (or some other custom rom) will soon be available for XT530, so we would be able to uninstall things we don't need.
2. You can shift apps to SD even without rooting your phone, but the trick is that most preinstalled apps cannot be shifted or uninstalled.
3. After rooting I wasn't able to overclock my phone, and I tried every cpu-tuning app available on the matrket. Again we will have to wait for some custom rom.
Hope this helps a bit.
first thanks a lot for replying.
Can you give me a good reason to root my phone if i cant do anything in the casE?

Novice Help with Rooting, Directory Bind? - Please don't flame me!!

Hi. I've only rooted one phone successfully before, the Nexus One and have had no need to root the Galaxy Nexus. I have pre-ordered the Nexus 7 & doubt I'd need to root that either. I like stock Android with no bloatware.
I've purchased an Archos G9 101 Turbo which only has 8gb flash. I didn't want the pricier and way heavier 250gb SSD model. However, 8gb is very little when I want to mainly use it to store video data and digital comics which take up a lot of room. I put in a 32gb micro sd to expand my storage but realistically all that will allow me to do in Android 4.0+ is store pictures, music, etc there which I won't do with this tablet.
What I need is to be able to store app data to it like you could in prior versions of Android. Since the new software works much like iOS in that everything shares the remaining memory that the OS doesn't take up, I can understand why they are starting to not put micro sd slots in. But if they aren't going to, more flash needs to be added.
So ... I understand that there are tools such as Directory Bind that I've seen links on here discussing it for other devices that users want the same thing I want it for --
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1410262
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1536568
I also recognize that in order to accomplish this, I need root permission. I don't have need for a custom rom as the archos is fairly close to stock but I would like to remove some bloatware and utilize an app like directory bind to re-direct my apps to store their data on the micro sd I installed. Digital comic books take up a lot of room but if I could make the app store the data on the micro sd, this would alleviate my problem.
Having explained the above, can someone please kindly assist me with a thread or tell me directly the following;
1) How to root the gen 9 101.
2) If I root, do I HAVE to have a custom recovery and ROM?
3) Once I root, is Directory Bind the best solution for moving app data to the micro sd and if not, what is?
I'd really appreciate guidance on this as I don't want to brick the Archos 101 G9. It wasn't a terribly expensive & high quality device but since they bumped it to 1gb ram, it runs pretty smooth for what I need ... to bad they didn't include more RAM!! Regardless, I'm willing to root this one & use it as my play device.
Thanks in advance for any help. I did search thru the forums before posting but there was o much information I wasn't sure which avenue to take.

Hi!
...because Archos is not a classical device ....you need to perform few steps !!!
1. You need to install ( enable) SDE menu ! please go here & press Thanks to Shano56 , for enable SDE , how prepar your device for root & ...
2. You can download & install the last Archos firmware 4.0.7 (4.0.3) - Root version ( is the same version with official Archos but with root access !) here !
3. You can not move app on micoSD ...for this you need to perform some aditional steps !
3. After you have installed SDE, you can install Custom Rom !!!
( I will upload soon the Root version ~ 1hour !) :good:
Good luck !

Thanks for the help. I don't know if I'll get it right and definitely don't want to brick the tablet so I hope you don't mind if I might have another question as I go along.
BTW ... I do not want to put my apps on the micro sd, just the app data only. The apps themselves hardly take up any room but if you read alot of books from different apps (Nook, Kindle, Kobo, Play) and read a lot of digital comics via an app like Comixology, the data they store will eat up what little memory is available of the G9 101 with it only having 8gb. That's why it's so important to find a way to do that and the Directory Bind app looks like it might solve that issue. Comixology especially creates a lot of data with the downloaded comics. I just don't want to constantly have to delete comics or books from any of my apps just to make room for more. IF I can get the G9 working where the apps recognize their data stored on the 32gb micro sd card I installed, then I'll have plenty of room for what I need and can download more books and comic books than I could read in a year. The "cloud" is fine for some things but I don't want to trust it with my entire reading library.
I will follow the steps you outlined from the links noted and let you know my progress.
-- Will I need a custom ROM or can I just use the rooted Archos ROM you referred to and if so, will it still get OTA updates which Archos is frankly way better with than the likes of Motorola??
-- Have you personally had any success with the DirectoryBind app that forces an app to relocate data to the microsd? I see mixed results from several threads and from a web article. Here's a few:

One other quick question: what are the advantages of using a custom ROM for the Archos G9 101?

[Q] Per HTC I have unique unknown issue - help?

When I install apps on my device and move them to phone storage (/mnt/sdcard/ i believe as apps can no longer be moved to the external sd), if I restart the device any application that has been moved is gone. The icon is still there but when I select it I get a message that says "application is not installed." Verizon & HTC both told me it was an unknown issue - but it's now happened to me on 2 consecutive devices, both of which I've done a factory data reset on, and the second time I also wiped my external sd card.
Any ideas? I'd love to know if this is something I'm doing with my settings, or if my google profile is corrupt, or if this has happened to anyone other than me. Would rooting help? That's the next step anyway just to see (or S-OFF?) Thanks in advance for any responses.

this sounds like your sd card is on its way out. have you tried a different card to see if its the problem? Is said card formated FAT32??

i tried deleting the external card via the phone's data reset mechanism, but haven't tried a different card yet - I didn't think that could be the issue because the apps are moved to "phone storage" not the external sd, but i will try that next.
how do i know if it's FAT32? i saw this thread for formatting and will do when i get home, but is there a way to check using the phone?

idk how to check via phone, might have an app for it.
but when you move app to sd it adds some data to .android folder that is stored on the external SD card.
try pulling everything off the card and put it on the pc, format via windows pc, then put the stuff back and try it out. if you can get a different card and try that.
I am rooted and am running CyanogenMod (0717) and my apps sometimes just disappear. I have noticed with one app in particular. My Play Music app seems to just disappear off the face of the earth (metaphorically speaking). I thought to myself, "Hmm, maybe I just uninstalled it by accident.". Because I have done some pretty crazy things while I was asleep or just plain old being me. I went to the Play Store and found it on there and I noticed that the Play Store said it wasn't installed. I went and tried to install it. I got an error code (-24). I went and researched it and it actually never disappeared. (Well kind of didn't) I went into /data/data/ and found it sitting right there. The folder to the application was still there, but it appears that the OS lost track of it. It almost seems as if it forgot it was there. (But of course that is almost impossible for a machine that is coded to do something cannot possibly forget like that. The error code I received was saying that the app folder existed and couldn't be overwritten. Sorry if I invaded in this thread, but it is just similar experience. Did you try and reinstall the missing apps and see what happened? Did you get an error code like I did? And I am assuming you are on 4.0.4 (stock) OS, yes?

Ok so we're going to go deep and nasty with this here. So far you've ruled out rom based issues since you've moved from the stock RUU to CM10.1nightly(I suggest running mdmowers builds honestly). I too had a weird issue with getting apps to move from "internal" to "phone" storage(both are internel to the phone, just different partiitons). The next few things are based on my dealings with embeded linux and flash hardware.
First are you using the SDcard partition swap patch supplied by jose51197? If so, this could be a wacky thing where the linkings are going bad because of a failing SDcard and that could be your problem.
Secondly, are you runnign out of space in the /mnt/secure/asec and /data/ partition and your phone is doing wacky things because of this? Check by plugging your phone into a computer with ADB installed on it and do "./adb shell df /data" and "./adb shell df /mnt/secure/asec". If they report very little space, usually apps start failing silently because they've got no space to write their added data.
If neither of these things are the case, then its the phones internal flash memory that is failing. This does happen, usually though only because of excessive writting and deleteing things(app churn, text messages with auto delete on, testing multiple roms) from the internal memory, and can only be dealt with by getting a new phone.
Best of luck.

No they aren't installed on the SD card and I haven't seen it happen for a couple days. But in response to jiggz88, by apps failing silently, do you mean they open and they close suddenly without notice? Or that they just don't exist. I was using the unofficial mdmower builds when CyanogenMod was going through some rough times and apps such as Play Music would close suddenly without notice. Especially when you entered My Library or Radio on it. Is that what you were referring to? Or just not showing up at all in the installed apps (or whatever).

that's definitely different from my issue. Play Music has never been one of the apps that disappears because I can't move it to phone storage partition at all. also not that error code, it only tells me "application is not installed" nothing else. by checking available memory it doesn't appear that the apps actually get uninstalled as no more space is available after they are magically uninstalled, it's just that the system no longer recognizes that they're there. yes stock 4.0.4 OS. when i reinstall the "missing" apps they reinstall and work just fine until the device reboots (which has happened 3x in the last 24 hrs) and then they are "gone" again. hoping to try reformatting ext sd card tonight or tomorrow if i can finish enough work first; if that doesn't work will root.

Alright sorry for bloating your thread. Hope you get your problem fixed as I haven't ever experienced this issue.

TCL S720T flashed and internal storage is lost

I bought a TCL S720T from China about two weeks ago. It has 4.2.2 with 1GB RAM and 8GB ROM and is based on MT6592. When I first got the phone, the internal storage was displayed as about 5.9GB out of which most (about 5.85GB) was available. I would like to mention here that when I connected my phone to the PC thru a USB cable, the total internal storage was also shown as 5.9GB on PC.
I did the following to the phone and now I am in trouble... plz help
As I bought it from China, it did not have Google apps. I rooted the phone to get these installed. During rooting I deleted some useful original apps.
I tried to restore the phone to factory settings but the deleted apps did not return (I do not know what did I do wrong). I started to search for phone's stock ROM but could not find it. Also all information on the web is in Chinese and that too no accessible from where I live.
After a couple of days, I found a ROM on "lewaos" website. It was translated from Chinese to "S720T Le Frog bottom package. Zip" and the website claimed that it was the original ROM. I thought that it is the actual ROM by TCL so I flashed it using SP_Flash_Tool_v5.1343.01. When the system rebooted, the radio was not working as the baseband was missing, however, the total internal storage was shown as about 4.90GB. I just want to mention here that I never backed up my original ROM (bad on my part).
There was another ROM update given on the same website for installation using external SD card. So, I installed the ROM, but this time the total internal storage wasshown as 1.09GB out of which 1GB was available. I got worried and tried to find other ROMs to fix the issue. I found some ROMs from website named "needrom" and tried them too. Whenever I use flash tool to load the ROM which I got from LEWA website, the phone shows 4.9GB internal storage but the phone radio does not work. However, as soon as I install any ROM using SD card, the internal storage is shown close to 1.1GB. I have even downloaded the official ROM update from "tclmobile" website and installed it using SD card, but the internal storage is still shown as 1.1GB. Also, whenever I connect my phone to PC thru the USB cable, the total internal storage is shown as 1.1GB out of which about 1GB is free.
While installing ROM thru SD card, I have always adopted the process of wiping the factory settings and cache in the recovery mode.
I would also like to mention here that during the process of loading ROMs, I lost the radio operation due to invalid IMEI, which I later restored using AT+... commands (thanks to xda-developer forums).
Having said all that let me summarize my problems:-
I have lost the original Stock ROM of my phone and no support is available outside China.
Whenever I install ROMs through SD card, the internal storage is 1.1GB, I want my actual internal storage ie 5.9GB back.
Please help me to fix my phone
Thanks
Maybe we can help each other i have a backup may work for you...
Hey what up dude,
I have exact phone, and similar issue. no backup, but I have a horrible boot loop for one MONTH now, I am going crazy, even the guys at china-devices.com are not much help. (But may help your problem).
I can't backup but i can access stock recovery and NEED to install CWM recovery via SD as the bootloop just blocks all attempts to connect the phone to the PC. I cant see my phone data but i know i have your ROM and model, using TCL factoryware. Octo the whole nine yards.
Another long time friend has a TCL S720T and he sent me a zip of a ROM backup he made. I can pass it to you via wetransfer or email attachment.
Note that his backup is UN-rooted so it should work OK, and be 'pure' maybe some factory crapware he wiped off it. and you will likely need to fix the IMEI issue, (or maybe not, and I am a newb so can't help you there, yet).
In return, could you tell me how you fixed your issue, what exact tools you used, and so on? Sepecially if used MTK driod tools what version and SP flashtools what version any and all info will be great thanks.
There is an app you can istall that shows you which apk are system apps and not to touch, i had it installed, but i am lord of the idiots, and went ahead and deleted the chinese keyboard, hey presto, one really great phone I had almost totally customised my way, now in a month-long boot loop and may never recover.
Wow. It was amazing to hear that someone else also has this phone but was sad to know that you are also facing problems. Please contact me on [email protected]. I will first try to resolve your issues then will post those solutions on xda.
By the way, I have resolved all my issues and my phone is up and running like anything. Thanks to android lovers all over the world. I will try to give you solutions one by one.
SOLVED! & Thanks Muiz!
SOLVED with this tutuorial... all credit to the OP, Muiz, I'm only passing it forward, this is a GREAT phone, hope to see more users soon!
If we address your first problem of not being able to boot the phone at all, I will propose to go to this link (use any English translator if you do not read Chinese) ... you may use www.micrsofttranslator.com
http://bbs.lewaos.com/learn-s720t.html
You will find these steps in a tutorial.
1, download the ROM and put it into the SD card root directory (on computer operation)
Download LeWa_TCL_S720T_JB2_ROM__XXXXX.zip ( from bbs.lewaos.com) and copy ROM package in zip format to phone external SD card root directory.
2, download the Flash tool latest version and unzip it to the desktop (computer operation)
Download SP_Flash_Tool_v5.1352.01, and extract it to your computer desktop.
3, download music frog end of packet (on computer operation) lewaos.com
Download end of Le frog, S720T package. zip and extract it to your computer desktop. lewaos.com
4, download and install the Flash drive Download MT65xx flash drive _ automatically installed. rar (lewaos.com ), and extract it to your computer desktop, double-click the InstallDriver.exe folder is automatically installed
If you desire to install any un-rooted original backup you have, to your phone, do not download the file in step 1.
To make the tutorial short; first install the drivers as mentioned in step 4. Then extract the file mentioned in step 3 in a folder on your desktop. Extract and start the flash tools utility and give the path of the folder you copied on your desktop. There is going to be a sort of file with name “MT6592_Android_scatter.txt”. Use its path to flash the ROM.
You will have to wait for some time, but the Flash tools will install the LEWA ROM on your phone.

ok guys i have tcl s720 without the "t" whats the difference? i went to the chinese website & had a look around with an english translator & i see downloads for s720t but none for s720 .
i recently changed my rom from what it arrived with as play store didnt work & push notifications so i flashed successfully this rom
wwwdotneedromdotcom/download/tcl-720t-cm11-v2-w200s-lstyle-port/
this is ported from THL w200s which works well just a few slight issues with storage etc but better than what i had as play store works
what im also looking for is there actually a fully working rom for the s720 ? & where can i get a fully working stock rom for this phone? yes i have searched tirelessly but roms i checkout seem to have quite a few bugs so im just looking for a good stable one.
apart from few issues this phone im more than satisfied with

[Q] External SD not writable by apps in NG6

I have root, and a 64gb card installed. Running stock rom, with no other tweaks than removal of bloatware via TitaniumBackup. I tried the SDFix app (worked last time, doesn't now) to no avail. It says I have write capabilities, but when I try to set TitaniumBackup or SuperBeam to write to the external SD, I get the insufficient space error. Has anyone figured this out yet? I tried the xda search function already and it gave me very little to go on, so I decided to post. Thanks to whomever can solve this!
I think I recall using Xposed and some sort of SD fix module to get it working awhile back. Sorry buts been so long since running on stock that I can't remember specifics. This really was a huge fumble on Googles part!
The good news is I heard lollipop has better sdcard support. Think we will get it. The question is will lollipop be root able.
SD kitkat fixer by Jim Rummy in the play store. Worked for me.
