So, after being an iPhone user for a while, I've finally talked myself in to making the plunge and going for android and the SGSII seems to be the best handset available at the moment. I just have a few general questions that I would like answers from you guys who know.
Firstly, when rooting and flashing ROM's does it matter if you have a white or a black version? I still havnt decided which one to get but if this is the case id prob go with whichever one is supported more.
Secondly, battery life. Can you guys give me some real life battery stats? My iPhone 4s usually goes 12 hours then it needs charged. This would normally have around 5/6 hours of actual usage and thats with brightness set to virtually nonexistant in the settings. Would the SGSII be equal to or not far off that? I've seen theres an extended battery pack available too, does that make a huge difference?

For rooting / custom rooms black or white doesn't matter. Important is model no. like i9100 international version or AT&T version etc. most roms and customization support i9100 international version.
I have both. SGS2 and iPhone 4s. Battery life is almost similar. On standby sgs2 gives me more time. but no big difference in practical use as per my requirements. SGS2 will last a day at least if you are a heavy user like me.

Well I'll be buying my SGSII from o2-UK. Not quite sure what version it will be. The Apps i used the most are messages apps. like Whatsapp and on the iPhone it drains battery for fun!
I was originally going to go for the Galaxy Nexus. But after seeing it in the plastic/glass it wasn't as nice as I'd expected.
I'd get the Galaxy Nexus over the Galaxy SII. Just my 2 cents.

No, colour doesnt matter, both have the same hardware, the ONLY diff is the physical housing.
Battery life should be around the same as a 4S, i can get a full day and ahalf with moderate use and around 10hours with heavy usage.

I dont think it warrants the extra money, here in the UK the SGSII with o2 is £449.99 but the Galaxy Nexus is £529.99

It will be a i9100 if you get it from O2 UK.
I get between 4 and 7 hours of screen on time, upto a few days of standby time, might only lose 3-10% ish over a 9h sleeping night (when i forget to plug my phone in) (idle usage will also depend if the phone is being woken up all the time, theres a great app called better battery stats - see sig - to help find out whats causing the problems)
The big factors are:
* Type of usage, 3D gaming will use more power than texting
* Data usage, wifi uses less power than 3G
I would get the 2000mAh battery, better life, not much thicker (though it does mess with some cases), and as its an official battery you know its not fake.
I would get the nexus myself, ICS + updates from google = win.
Though the SGS2 has one of the best non nexus dev communities (imo of cause).
In general, read lots of guides if you are going to mess around with your £300 slab of electronics

I honestly can't justify the extra cost of the Nexus. If it was sub £500 then possibly

Thanks. I've been researching a lot over the past few days and I just found out you can plug a usb stick into the SGSII via an adapter an play music an stuff off it. To me (an iPhone user) it blew my mind! lol

As long as the USB stick is fat32 (limits file size to 2GB).
Yeh, it sounds awesome, but I have never found the need, 32GB SD card ftw! (Also MHL adaptor, when my computer was in for repairs, I plugged my phone into my monitor, headphones plugged into phone, and used it as a media player, FTW! Shame we cant do USBOTG and MHL at the same time)
The nexus is more expensive, and not really "faster" than the SGS2, the only thing is a stock ICS look.
I was going to flog my SGS2 to move to the nexus, but then by bank balance told me to stop being a twit and use a ICS theme while I wait

I have an 8gig USB stick that I put films on, so would be nice to be able to plug them into my phone and watch if im out an about or bored, Always have it with me.

I wouldn't leave my GS2 for a Galaxy Nexus, the Nexus has awful batt life, crap camera, weaker GPU and no memory card slot.
USG-OTG (On The Go) is the feature you are talking about, where you plug in a usb stick.
MHL is the tech used by the GS2 to do HDMI via the USB Port. Hopefuly someone can better explain MHL than i just did though, lol.

Is 'screen on time' with Android how much you actually used your phone?
As for the battery-life I have more good news for you.
If you choose to install a custom-ROM later, you have the possibility of literally boosting your battery-life. MIUI+UC+UV=....well, my personal best was not charging the phone for three days and still have more than 60% on moderate usage.
And the second thing is the SAMOLED+ screen. While it has its downsides, the upsides make it clearly a winner when compared to a LCD. The contrast and brightness are high enough to make me use a low brightness-settings most of the time and still see everything, even if it's bright outside. This results in a better battery-life too.

Buy a 16gb micro sd or a 32gb sd remembering the phone has 16gb internal memory too (give or take customizations) and put all your films on your phone no need for anything else apart from a player app such as rockplayer or vital player to play back pretty much any format of video including xvid/divx and mkv with or without subtitles

I don't know, I have a 32gb card in there and I like to be able to add extra storage occasionally... Also adds to the convenience... I don't always have my usb cable for the phone but I generally carry a usb stick. Its plugged into the sgs2 adaptor so I always have that too. Good to "steal" stuff off of mates pc's without needing drivers to be installed...

How much actual usage is that with though? I looked through a thread and seen a guy getting an incredible 5 day battery life with a combination of things but he only used his phone around 6 hours in them 5 days. My general usage on the iPhone would be around 6/5 hours a day

Would much prefare to buy one from the high street cause then I can take it back in-case its goes dodgy and not have an extra day or 2 each way for repair

You get about 4-7h screen on time, aka using it, how you spread that out over days is up to you!
Idle drain is very low as long as the phone manages to deep sleep, aka you dont have any rouge apps.

The apps I use the most on my iPhone are Facebook, text messaging, Whatsapp and Twitter.

I bought a Nexus 9 on the google store when it comes out. I had to change it 4 times in a row due to lightbleed, overheating, backside problem, problems with buttons. Finally I ask for a refund.
When does Google and/or HTC make a Nexus 9 without all these issues ?
When I pay 489 € for something I expect that the product is quality made.

Well, supposedly HTC released a statement saying they fixed the issues, but obviously there's nothing indicating they actually did anything. From what I've been reading here and on Android Central, a bunch of people are reporting luck with the white 16gb versions or either of the 32gb versions. I totally agree on the whole price/quality thing.
Got mine day one and zero issues. There are good ones out there.

No problems at all: Back is good, minimum to no lightbleed.
Only the power button is a bit "loose" on one side

HTC did no such thing. You're confusing rumors with official statements. The rumor is based off a Reddit post.

I just got a 32GB WiFi only, not problem at all : the back is firm, no lightbleeding (I didn't notice it), buttons perfect.
I got one from Amazon yesterday. The backlight bleed wasn't bad at all, but the buttons were a bit recessed. I asked for an exchange, and that one arrived today and the backlight bleed is actually a little worse, and buttons more recessed.
That being said, after using the N9 a lot over the day, and comparing to a friends iPad, the backlight bleed isn't bad at all on the first one I got, and I've gotten used to the buttons. The back has one spot with tiny flex, but nothing notable (and impossible to feel once my Devicewear case arrives).
Both units were 32GB White October 17th devices. So far I'm sticking with the first one I got, and so far I'm loving it.

I got lucky,
My first had massive bleeding, send back and got a better offer from amazon (returned nexus with damaged package for 150$ off).
Here i had only a very slight bleeding and decided to keep it instead of rolling the dice all over again and maybe never get a better one )
The keys are working but they are awful, first time i appreciate the wakeup by tapping function (normally i dont like functions like this and prefer the hardware button)
overall for the price i got it is ok, the beautiful screen (and i prefer4:3 for reading and working on) but seriously the build quality is awful.
I got my Nexus 9 a few days after it was released from Best Buy so I assume it's of the first revision if there are indeed multiple revisions. I haven't had any problems since day one and am still loving it!
got mine today without any issues thus far. the only thing i'm hating is the freaking slow charging... and this is from someone who has a galaxy note 10.1 2014. at least the gn10.1 would quickly charge to 80% before the slowdown begins. i'm only getting up to ~1000mW using a variety of chargers and cables, including the stock one, anker, samsung's, asus - all the non-htc are 2A or higher.
did have an issue of ripping the back cover off trying to get the damn thing out of the box.

Haven't had it long enough for a full charge. 1.25hrs and I went from 38% to 64%.
Checking BMW pro the last 30 minutes is where it jumped to 1400mW. It should settle after a few cycles. I got this new at 48%.

IMHO, 2-3 hours is pretty quick for a full charge on Nexus 9. What was your expectation?

dunno where your math shows 2-3 hours. 1.25hrs = ~24% per hour. then don't forget that just about every tablet trickles at 80%.
check the logs from last night and 63 to 100 took 2h 5m. 63 to 80 took 50min. the last 1h 15m 80 to 100. so going up to 80 really isn't too bad.
2 hours of screen time and i used 9.6% per hour just web browsing, looking at webms and and a little h264 pron:good:... this is with usb's kernel and 0% brightness - i like it dim and this is a bright ass screen!
after a few more discharge cycle we'll see how it settles. it's not as bad as my first impression, just a little quirk on my first 10% taking an hour.
as much as i'd hate carrying a separate charger, i kinda wish they'd start adding a dedicated ac charging port. my samsung 700t used to take 2.5hours 0-100.

thanks for the info. we'll see if mine does the same after a few cycles. loving it so far and the battery life's been better than a lot of the reports - my results have generally been better than most because i mainly use it a 0% brightness, no haptic feedback, and location off unless needed (used tasker script for that).
according to some specs it's 6540mah, just a bit less than the nexus 9. the charger output, maybe 30W?? it only ran for 5.5hrs normal use for me. my old 500t took 1.5 hrs and i think it was a 4000mah battery and last 9-12hrs depending on usage.
I believe this type of question on a forum that offers support is useless.
Most people without issues do not look for forums.

Hi everyone, I will be assembling a battery discharger/capacity tester to give definitive results on which batteries have greater capacities. I just have one heavily used original Samsung battery and a cheap generic replacement battery that was used for about 20 cycles that I can test. If anyone is interested in sending batteries they want tested for actual mAh I would be more than glad to do so.

I'd recommend reviewing the Anker 3200mAh note 3 battery. I decided to get a replacement for my 1.5+ year old stock battery and this was the one that was getting the best ratings for the least money. At first I was disappointed, as it didn't seem like there was much if any improvement over the old stock battery. However, after a few weeks I was noticing significant improvement. I decided to try consciously squeeze the longest life I could out of it during my 24 hour shift. I was shocked with the results.

I leave 4G, wifi, gps and bluetooth on all the time because I'm too lazy to switch them on/off, brightness is on auto, but I also have screen filter for night time. I have multiple adblockers in place, dunno if that has any effect. I changed most options to display black background if possible. I feel like I use my device fairly heavily. Tethered for a few hours, watched several hours of HD video, torrented a large file from a friend, dozens of texts, a terrible 20 minute phone call, my screen timeout is set at 5 minutes... so yeah. I'm quite impressed with this battery, would recommend to anyone looking to replace their old battery. It's not quite as good as the battery life when I first bought it but it was a virgin device back then with a whole lot less going on and I have a feeling it would stack up well with the official sammy battery.

I did it with towel root, but had some problems with a superuser app, I eventually got supersu to work but I don't remember exactly how, sorry. I'm on vvrucnc4.
Hi all,
I've been using my site to push partners and suppliers on this and nobody is planning on producing one which I find completely crazy.
It seems that the only phones that get battery cases are Samsung devices and Apple devices, but I would buy the sh!t out of a case I could clip over my phone and extend the battery by a few 1000 mAhs. Battery life really matters to me and I would sacrifice svelte-like aesthetics for it.
Anyone else looking for one too? (I've even used my PR contacts at Oneplus...they haven't even responded )
To those who say "use an external battery pack" I say, "I do", but I'd rather not carry two items especially when I'm at events like IFA recently.
What's the point when the charging is so quick? You're normally gonna be near a car or power point.
Why would you need the more mah? Can't you get trough a full day with the op5???

As I said, not when I'm at events and the like. I travel a lot for work also so yes I can charge when I get to hotels but it's VERY handy to trigger a switch and feed from battery case.

Under normal circumstances yes, however at events where there are lots of videos and pictures being taken as well as social media and more, then no. I can get through a day with about 4 hours SoT (12-14 hour day) and that's with about 10% left in normal use (best case scenario)

Jeez, some of the comments here are extremely assumption heavy. It's like they aren't even considering your point, or situations that would make you want a battery case.
I personally don't want a battery case, but it's trivial to imagine a scenario where it could be helpful. Zerolemon made one for the oneplus 3 I believe, I imagine they'll make one for the oneplus 5 as well.
I would be interested in a battery case for those rare circumstances. However, i don't want a poorly made one. I'm not sure how zero lemons have been lately, but the ones for nexus 5 and 6p i hated.
I orefer the thin build of the phone. I work with Linux a lot so i just apply Franco Kernel and my own custom settings in his app and terminal emulator. Usually nets me about 2 days of usage and around 10-11 hrs sot. If im not asleep by then at my home near my charger im probably MIA. I prefer to carry my external power in my backpack. I used an insanely huge battery for my S5 years ago and got sick of the 3 inch thick phone scheme
I wouldn't need a battery case. I find it hard people would really need it as I get 9-11 hours of screen on time (with fairly heavy usage). With Dash Charge, you can top off in just an hour and 20 min and a days worth of power in just 30-45 min. I doubt with a phone with insane battery life and teh fastest charging of any phone that there would be much call for a battery case.
Battery cases aren't really made to on all the time. Its just not feasible with how big and heavy the phone gets with them.
I would only use it when traveling. Get to the airport take my slim case off and throw on the battery case. That way I don't have to be like everyone else and look for a plug. Also external battery packs are much more inconvenient because you have to deal with an a cord. Easier to have something strapped onto the phone. On the plane I watch movies stored on my phone or listen to music while I sleep. Id leave the battery case on till i am about to land at my destination then just slip my slim case on and go about my day.
What about carrying a small power bank? You can get 1000mAh banks that aren't much bigger than a credit card and about 1/2" deep, then grab a 3" USB-C cable and toss them in your bag/pocket and off you go!
YES please! They are so handy for traveling... Once you had one you never want to go out without it anymore ?
What's the point of carrying a battery around all the time?
A battery pack (the bigger the better) with Dash Charging would be more way more useful!
My N6 is almost four years old. Running LineageOS 15.1 for now.
1. Screen-on time is awful. OK, if I have 120 minutes till it dead meat.
2. Less than 50% battery results in very likely self-switch off. Sometimes it can be rebooted, sometimes not. Power connection resolves the problem.
So I decided to change the battery. It took 2 hours. 20 minutes of the actual work and for about 100 minutes I looked for a proper T4-screwdriver I put somewhere.
New battery = same situation. Nothing changed. The battery I ordered from the USA and it wasn't cheapest on eBay. I ordered two batteries actually.
Resuming I see the problem, not in battery or not totally in the battery. Looks like the problem in the aging power distribution subsystem. Capacitors etc.
This phone may be cleverly designed to hold a very specific timespan. It's time to retire.
Thinking about OnePlus 6?

I recently bought a N6 in great condition because I was refunded my money for my Nexus 6P. The phone did need a battery replacement though. It throttled under 40% and had early shutdowns.
I changed the battery (Cameron Sino) and modded my frame and back while I was at it.
The phone does run smoother (although no matter what rom I try, it always slows down to an unusable pace after a week or two) and stopped throttling.
I however do not get anywhere close to the SOT some of you guys are getting.
The most I could get is probably 2h30m if I'm lucky. Mostly I get around 1h30m to 2h.
I really want to get this fixed because I plan to use my N6 until the new Pixels arrive (which is still a long time).
I do have my Moto 360 connected but this is not the problem. I ran a clean rom install without my watch connected and bluetooth disabled and did not get more battery life out of it.
Edit: I'm running Nitrogen OS at the moment.

I'm deep in concern Moto implemented the N6 radio module or the radio flash or vendor or any other proprietary in the way to interfere with a proper day to day work.
Artificial aging promotes us to buy new devices every 2-3 years. But from the performance point, our 32bit N6 is still adequate.
Would be happy to get it to my kid instead of buying another device for him. He already killed my old Note 2 and close to do the same with J7.

I had a similar problem on the Nexus 5 a while back. What I did was to put the phone in recovery and let it drain till the battery wore out then charge it back to full while still in recovery. It took a while but seemed to stop the battery from both shutting down early or reaching 0% prematurely. Sounds weird I'm sure but it had an affect. Nothing to lose to try it.

I had a similar experience, changed out the battery in my device back in March. Performance is marginally better, but it still turns off at or around 15%. Nothing new out there to entice me yet, though Best Buy does have a great deal on the Pixel 2 XL with Verizon right now.
I was thinking about what it is about the Nexus 6 that has kept me with it for longer than any other phone. I decided that one of the many things I like is the 16:9 aspect ratio. The phone is thick, for sure, but 16:9 is just right. Not sure if I am ready for the 19:9 or 18.5:9 or whatever else is going on out there.
I just keep my phone plugged in at work, helps me get through the day both battery and performance wise.

i was having that problem on nougat around 40% ( pure nexus), used it for over 6 months, moved to oreo for couple of weeks. both aosip and lineage os. its worse. i am afraid to let it go bellow 70 because its my daily driver and i don't have a back up phone right now. i am not even rooted now because it adds to instability.
Update:
Within a week of my last Post it was so bad that I had to have the phone plugged in all the time. If unplugged phone would turn off around 95%. If I pull down quick setting bar it would shut off immediately. So I get a battery and replaced the old one. Took me an hour and half to fully charge more than 2 days ago. I'm not really using it. Off and on I would turn it on to check emails, browse little bit, play some videos etc. I'm at 11 percent now. Battery saver turned on at 15%. More than 4.5 jour sot.
At 9 percent now, no shut down yet. Not even one. I'll plug it in now.
Another thing I recently discovered is that revootimg into safe mode and then rebooting back in to regular mode clears up some issues. Anyone having random shutdown issues might want to try this. It seems to have good results so far for me. Phone is now more fluid than it has been since I bought it.

Donated my N6 to my kid. Bought OnePlus 6 for myself and 5 for my fem. My old N6 reflashed stock and it looses battery pretty quickly. Will try to do all those recommendations from above...
have any of you tried rebooting to bootloader, selecting Bootloader Logs and holding the power button down till it reboots trick?
For my N6 i put 2 battery in parrallel, and i got more than 8hours screen on !
But no more back-plastic-plate..
At least, i can handle a big day
For charging i'm force to use only fast-charge charger, under 800ma it take 20hours for full charge ! (5h in 5v1500ma and 1hours at 9v2A )
Lineage 16 - Popcorn Kernel + undervolt cpu -30mv*
Problem solved, at least 1more year with this phone for only 15$

Just buy 2 new battery, verify the voltage (they have to be the same before soldering) on one diconnect the BMS and use your soldering tool to put the two battery in parrallel
Keep using one BMS for connecting to the phone
You'll have to cut the plastic to fit the two battery, and you'll never be able to put the battery cache again of course, use some tape of your favorite color to protect the back ( if you don't put tape you will cut the BMS cable or damage the button connector )

Just want to share my experience...My nexus6 used as backup phone got same problem. I only use to stream live video and need to connect it to charger or powerbank to avoid random reboot. Then, last month I accidentally found e-commerce shop sell N6 battery around [email protected] and I tried my luck to change the battery... after changing to new battery and used almost 3weeks I found no more random reboot but battery life is not great in idle (using android9 custom rom) then I switch to android 8 custom rom..idle is improved but sot only can get 3hours only. Check with accubatery shows 3100mah...
