Modem Updates? - Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 Questions & Answers

Anybody else do modem updates off the MIUI OTA images? What is your process? Simply flash NON-HLOS to the modem partition? Erase it first?
I have a "global" mido (read: B4 and B20) that I've had to keep on the same modem package because every time I update, I lose voice functionality all together. No audio off earpiece, but the calls connect, and data services work fine. I think I'm using one pulled from 8.2.10.0 MCMFIDL, which is what my device would have come with.
Any ideas why this might be? Are there other files that must be versioned to match?
Any insight would be appreciated.

What are you on about? This is my own thread. Related to using firmware pulled out of existing MIUI images and flashed on a device running a custom ROM.

You can just report this thread, no need to tell.
Moderator will move this thread to the right place.

You have to be on unlocked bootloader to do this
And i preffer you to download the same version from European rom xiaomi.eu and extract non-hls.bin and then flash it

I do not own this phone.
This thread will provide custom recovery ( CWM/TWRP ) flashable zip files of the stock frmware without knox software. This way you need not upgrade using OTA and hence will be able to move between stock and custom firmware if need to.
If you use OTA to upgrade to the latest firmware, your bootloader will be upgraded to facilitate knox. Once updated there is no going back. The roms in this thread will help you overcome this issue.
The only prerequisite is that you are not already running a knox enabled bootloader. You can find this out by going into download mode and checking if knox entries are shown in bootloader screen.
You will have the following advantages.
Bootloader is not touched, hence any compatible rom can be flashed, including custom roms
Only Samsung knox files are removed
Root & Busybox
Stock kernel
Deodexed
Zipaligned
Procedure
Download the Odin version of Philz recovery or my custom twrp recovery and flash.
Reboot to recovery first else custom recovery will be replaced by stock recovery.
Flash the ROM zip file
Reboot and Njoy...
As an additional step, you can flash the modem that comes with the ROM. The procedure to flash the modem is given below.
Use Odin v3.04
Untick Autoreboot
Flash modem
Reboot once again into Download Mode using (Vol Down plus Home button combi)
Flash Modem once more
Once done, unplug then reboot device manually.
If this doesn't work, try repeating the flash process again while rebooting manually and with auto-reboot option turned off.
Downloads
All files can be downloaded from my Mega folder. Choose the mega link and select SPH-L600 STOCK FIRMWARE folder. MD5 hash values are available in a separate file inside the folder.

for some reason my wifi has stopped working, whenever I try to turn it on , it immediately goes back off. Any suggestions?
Happened to me first time around after I had flashed the modem. I wasnt able to get the rom to flash in stock recovery. Once I flashed Philz recovery then the deodex rom all was good to go

Did this last night all went well. Grabbed the Philz and then flashed the stock rom, but didn't flash the modem.
@Silesh.Nair Thanks so much for the work and resources. Are the roms in your Mega folder compatible with this device? So very grateful that some development is finally occurring for the Sprint variant.

Well now that I'm over being a wise guy, I think what I'm reading is that with this apk you can do outbound calls and texts, just not on LTE. Is that correct? And is the phone apk rom specific? Like so many others, I'm guessing, I'm really itching to ditch the Sprint stock rom. But wait... just this second for the umpteenth time my phone is telling me that I have left the network with roaming turned off (sitting in my living room, smack dab in the middle of an LTE coverage area.) This is killing me!! Haha!!

You shouldn't have this problem on a stock ROM. I suggest you flash the modem that came with the ROM. Its available as a separate Odin flashable tar file.

Yeah that's what I think. I downloaded it the other day so I'll do that this morning. As an aside, I really need to dig in and learn how to do this (cook/build,) but I'm a school teacher with almost no time to devote to my own education in this regard. I have been looking around at some of the guides but there is some much information that I'm not really sure where to start (suggestions?). I tend to be a bit obsessive/compulsive when it comes to technology, so much so that my friends and family often start to wonder "what happened to me." I imagine others can relate. On spring break this week; time to play.
Thank you.

Very funny, Mr.Nair. And I'm an English teacher to boot! I would relish having someone with experience to mentor me. Just to show you how much teachers look forward to their breaks(read mental exhaustion,) I discovered today that after flashing a custom recovery and rooting this little Sprint demon the other day, I had NOT flashed the firmware you uploaded. Can't believe I didn't do that. This came to light after I flashed the CM ROM for I9205 (I know, NOT recommended, but I did it for kicks.) Your CM build installed beautifully, and I was able to connect to WiFi, but of course I didn't have a cell data connection. I flashed the L600 modem in Odin a couple times on top of CM and applied various settings using the phone apk moosiemooses linked and eventually did get a mobile data connection, but I couldn't make it persistent. I wound up restoring the nandroid I made the other day; this is when I discovered that I hadn't flashed the firmware version in your Mega folder. So I did that after lunch today, flashed the modem twice and after a bit of fiddling all seems to be working well. I'm fairly new to this carrier and the network seems a bit finicky, but that's just my opinion. I spent most of the day doing this, and I think I learned something in the process, just not clear about what that is exactly.<g>
Thanks.

[Q] Need a little help about Radio.

Ok, so I tried looking for my answer all over this forum, and unless i missed it,i can't seem to find my answer ..figured i'd ask.
So i have the VRAMC3 version running 4.4.2 rom but my radios are only 3G.. i looked and i guess i need a different radio to flash (nd7?), my question is that if i have to flash another firmware or can i just stay on C3 and flash the updated radios?.
i've looked for the radios but is there a zip or a way to flash just the radios themselves or do i have to go about it a different way?.

There is.. Look under my profile. Thread ND7 stock should have a link for the ND7 4.4.2 radio. Just flash in recovery..Make sure your not getting 4G bc you are in a remote area as well.. You shouldnt be only on 3G just bc the radio is different. Also you may want to look under mobile networks and make sure you are on CDMA/LTE/Evo

Thanks for the reply and help.. But unfortunately i'm still stuck on 3G signal.. I've tried numerous "preferred network types" to see if any of them would work.. So far the only ones that did seem to say "LTE", also disabled my calling abilities.. I could not call or receive calls, except for on the CDMA/LTE/EV-DO network, but yea, it's stuck on 3G.. i even tried the ND7 radio along with a couple ROMs as well to see if that would clear up my problem.. But unfortunately still here..
Do you think that i need to flash a newer Firmware?..

[HIMA][AT&T] Stock Rooted Dev Edition Rom [1.32.617.30] [7/5/2015]

Hello Ladies and Gents,
I threw together a flashable rom based off the newest update for the m9 dev edition.
This runs perfectly on the regular AT&T Variant since they are the same hardware just have minor differences.
Rom Features
-1.32.617.30 base (reverted to the old base because of calling issues)
-Odex'd (not sure why HTC still does it since ART doesn't need it)
-Rooted with SuperSU
-BusyBox
Download
I might do a little cleaning up (removing boot sound and some other stuff) let me know if you'd be interested in that.

How do you flash this? Is this possible to flash with S-on??
This uses a "camera-fix" base - if I flash it to my non-camerafix-ota'ed AT&T M9, will I effectively have a camera-fixed phone and be able to skip the OTA? Or does the OTA fix lower level firmware images of the camera, etc? What would happen if I flashed this on my non-ota'ed 1.32.401.15 phone?

Flash via twrp and you'll be fine, it might give a message about not being able to mount /system but that's a normal thing because the system is read only.
It will work with s-on because its just the system and boot partitions, OTAs won't work on it though obviously.
The North American unlocked and developer editions are the same as our phone just different firmware.

use the beta version of twrp as well. Then you can make a backup of your stock system .

Someone needs to check and see if VoLTE works with the Developer Edition, on the M8 it did not work... Just a thought. since ATT builds are differently configured thought id throw that out there for those in a VoLTE area.

VS985 12B_TO_23C_01.up FOTA file(s)

Cut to the chase; here's the download: Verizon LG G3 VS985 12B_TO_23C_01.up FOTA files.7z.
I really hate to start a whole 'nother new thread just for this, but I also didn't want to stick this in the middle of some other thread where it'll get lost.
Regardless, if I've somehow missed this being posted elsewhere, let me know and I'll delete this thread.
I have no idea if anyone truely has any use or need for this, but maybe somebody will want it if they're not using a Verizon SIM and they don't want to KDZ fresh, and they're already on 100% completely stock 12B.
Edit:
You have to be completely stock recovery, kernel, system, etc. There are very small exceptions to this, but nothing worth noting. Just start from a completely stock 12B uprooted through the 12B KDZ and you'll be good.
Then do this (except with the 12Bto23C_01.up file, extracted from the 7z archive I provide instead):

Don't count on me answering questions more about how to use this or even what it is, at least not anytime very soon - I've been fortunately/unfortunately too busy to do what I'd like to do on my devices. Those who know how to use it know what it is. Those who don't know but wish to can find out elsewhere.
Who knows, maybe in a week's time or a month or two months, I'll start answering questions, but trust me, they're all answered in these sections already concerning OTA files/upgrades.

I prefer to make the distinction that this is 23C_01, which is the actual OTA. There were leaks of 23A, 23B and 23C (probably 23C_00); those were not official releases and this is different.

Much appreciated, best regards!

There is no way to check on device afaik, but you can dd the fsg partition, then use imgextractor.exe in windows or mount as ext4 in linux to extract fsg contents, then open "bundle_release" and look under comments for version number.
*edit*
Unless you've somehow modified the fsg from your build's default version, you can just download your build number's corresponding radio and find the fsg version in the name of the flashable zip.
Actually, just realized, you can copy /fsg/bundle_release to your internal storage/sdcard either through a root file manager or through twrp, then open with a text editor; that's probably the easiest way.
@Q9Nap, i tried the marshmallow zip files for mpj24.139-23.1, mpj24.139-63 & mpj24.139-64. All of them returns error saying "this zip is for athene but this is athene_f" - something like this. I updated to the mpj24.139-63 before nougat....this I remember clearly. Dont remember which was the original model no. when i bought it. Can you help me which one should i flash? Mine is moto g4 plus indian variant.
Edit: i read the comments in main OP and checked my device's /fsg/bundle_release. It says FSG-8952-03.68 ......which means mpj24.139-63 or 64. But i tried them both. What is the problem here?

@Q9Nap, i tried the marshmallow zip files for mpj24.139-23.1, mpj24.139-63 & mpj24.139-64. All of them returns error saying "this zip is for athene but this is athene_f" - something like this. I updated to the mpj24.139-63 before nougat....this I remember clearly. Dont remember which was the original model no. when i bought it. Can you help me which one should i flash? Mine is moto g4 plus indian variant.

This is caused by the device check at the beginning of the updater-script, to prevent users from trying to flash these files to the wrong device.
I wasn't aware that there are variants of athene for ro.product.device.
The simplest solution is to unzip the file(s), remove or edit the device check from the updater-script(s), then rezip and flash.
*edit*
@pron_91, I've reviewed the build.prop files for all available builds, and all of them specify ro.product.device=athene.
I'm guessing athene_f is the xt1643 dual-sim version?
Just curious, is your device subsidized?

Yes my device is xt1643 dual-sim version. No, its not subsidized AFAIK.
Edit: as you said, the zip works after editing updater script. thanks

Thank you for your help! When I flash back to stock, which was a marshmallow, then how will I know which files I want to run when I flash to a custom nougat ROM? I'm sorry but on past devices I was more accustomed to having a description of firmware/radio that I could choose based on which ROM I was wanting to run.

A custom rom is going to overwrite boot and system, and presumably ignore the oem partition, so the only thing to be concerned with is which radio to run. As mentioned in the op, any radio will likely work.
Hello @Q9Nap,
Gave it a shot today. Tried to flash the M rom that my device came with. I use a European XT1642 dual-sim 16Gb. Also here i get an error 7 while flashing. My device is an athene_f it says. I checked the build.prop of the currently installed rom. There is no "ro.product.device" in it's build.prop. Or are your zips reading "another" build.prop?
OK.... it seems that this is a problem of TWRP. Flashed TWRP made by oadam11 (Ground Zero thread). And after that the zip worked fine. Report in TWRP thread?

Hi,
UPDATE:
The M version (MPJ24.139-63) for my device flashes fine and boots normally.
The N zip (NPJ25.93-14 i tried) flashes in about 5 seconds and afterwards TWRP says no OS installed

To use a custom N rom you only have to flash the last N modem package
Hi,
Update:
Flashing the last N modem zip end with an error: /firmware can't be installed. invalid argument.
This error together with the fact i couldn't flash the full N zip lets me think that partition table is different for N stock, or am i wrong?
Still the flashable N stock rom made by Jerome installs fine on my device.

Thanks for the info! I have a Harpia to test with but not an Athene, so I appreciate the feedback.
Obviously there are a few differences, including different TWRP and the availability of stock N.
So I need to edit the device check to include athene_f or remove it to fix the error 7 issue.

As for the issue with N, it could be a difference in partition table, which I purposely left out, because once it has been updated, it cannot be reverted; or it could be an issue with img2sdat.py, the tool I use to convert ext4 to sdat format. It converts differently depending on which android version is specified.

I may try it at a later date. Right now I am running Tesla Ground Zero ROM and I am very happy with it. Best custom ROM I have tried to date. First one to give me better battery life than stock. :good:
Thanks to the help of @Droidphilev, I have now posted working N builds!
Please note that all of these files will fail if attempting to flash with @Shreps TWRP; please see op for versions of TWRP that will work.
