I lost my v20 (T-Mobile rooted) about a month ago, so i went ahead and purchased another v20 hoping I could root it again but got the latest firmware which is locked up just like G6. I returned it.
So I'm just curious. What percentage of you guys would buy an unrootable phone and what percentage would not.

I have never cared about root and thus never rooted my phones, so yeah I don't really care if a phone is rootable or not

I don't find root really all that necessary anymore and haven't bothered since I've had the V20. So not worried about it at the moment with the V30.
like a few around here I'm getting the V30 (most likely) for the hardware, and I'll need root for V4A. so yeah, no root, no purchase. period. I'll keep my htc10 or something.
I won't buy a phone I don't own, and that means root. From Day 1.
Root for me is mandatory I have never owned a phone I couldn't root or that had a locked boot-loader.
I want a V30, but nope, gotta wait till the US998 AND a full bootloader unlock is released.
These phones are far too expensive,for me to NOT to have full control.
If I want a locked device, at $800, I'll buy a iPhone 8+ with better software,battery life, processor, ram management etc.
Google and Qualcomm are crazy with this new locked down policy

Why do you (not you specifically but the collective that seems to be here at XDA) all whine about cellphone cameras not turning out photos you like when you should all be rooting your phones and writing new noise reduction and sharpening algorithms instead of complaining about something you all clearly don't understand properly?
I come here to get general information on phones and new program ports. My contribution back is to maybe try to explain what the heck is going on with cellphones' cameras since for a board all high and mighty on getting the most of their phones but don't seem to understand the underpinnings of something they all want to complain about and probably don't have the ability to change if they really wanted to. Yes, I understand rooting, how it's done and why it's done. I've been with Android since the G1 days. At some point though, it has gotten to the point where I don't really see a need for myself to root my device anymore. My V20 worked. My V30 so far seems to work.

Well it's a thread about v30 which I have been following for a while. The question was asked if we care for rooting or not which means he was expecting answers from both sides, and being on xda doesn't require love for rooting. So these are my reasons to be here cheers

Just bought the Verizon V30. My plan is to wait until the unlocked version is released and the developers have a chance to get the bootloader unlocked, create custom ROMS, etc., and then (maybe) sell the V30 and get an unlocked version.
This is my first unrooted phone since my first HTC. The only thing that I really miss is the ability to create nandroid backups. I thought that I would miss the ad blocker more than I do, but since most of my apps are ad free it hasn't been that big of a deal.
I say "maybe" to getting an unlocked phone is that I don't want to give up WiFi calling, and so far having an unrooted phone is nowhere near as frustrating as I thought it would be. I also thought that having a silver phone instead of a black phone would be annoying, but it actually looks great.

Agree 100%, everyone Android I have owned has been rooted, and running a custom ROM. I have had a few iPhone's over the years and they were stock not JB, and it's actually not a bad phone stock, with the Ad Blocking apps, etc... But iOS is too locked down for me.
After using a non-rooted phone for a year, my answer is a strong HELL-NO! I will never own an unrooted phone again. I plan to get a V30, but I will wait until the bootloader is unlocked and I can root it with Magisk. Locked bootloaders are for iOS users.

Now that this phone is officially released, has anyone found a way to root it? I have the sprint version which is the ls992 and I want to root it. I saw a one click tool online but it's not in XDA so I don't think it's reliable. Thanks for any help

By the way, in case any of you were wondering, I'm coming from the LG g3 (ls990). I like the smaller screen, the fingerprint reader is very responsive, I dislike the moved volume buttons, dislike the audio jack being moved to the top although it DOES sound better, actually a good bit clearer. It feels really good in my hand but does get hotter than the LG g3. The material on the back has a good grippy feel almost, it's not particularly slick which is a good thing. I could hardly use my g3 with the stock back because of how slick it was. The cameras are PHENOMENAL. All of the picture modes provided are outstanding and not just gimmicks in my opinion.

JCase claims to have a root method already but refuses to release it... even with his rep I doubt his claims.
If the bootloader is unlockable, it should be relatively easy to do.
I also have the Sprint version. The only thing that's keeping me from getting it rooted so far is the inability to get it into Fastboot to flash a custom recovery.

Well bad news from Tmobile - I currently have the sprint ls990 LG G3 and decided to make the move to tmobile for the G5 because I was sick of locked bootloaders. The tmobile g5 does indeed have an unlockable bootloader however, LG seems to be using a custom bootloader on the G5 that wont flash anything that isnt verified. Tmobile's G5 already has a TWRP build and noone can flash it because of dm-verity. Essentially the tmobile appears to have an unlocked bootloader but lg has changed the bootloader so that it cant flash anything. That's the current status and I should add that I have not been able to try anything for myself because my phone hasnt arrived yet. But if that is the case on T-Mobile, then it's going to be even harder on Verizon, AT&T and Sprint.

Not with a locked bootloader unless an exploit is found. It looks like the same uphill climb as with the SD820 S7/S7E now.
So for now no root, no development

This would be the best phone, but no root or aosp/cm just kills it. So useless. Way too many new phones that are for "noobs" only. No unlock, no root, no use. Makes me so mad at these oem's

It saves them a lot of time and money. Any noob able to root and unlock could accidentally flash the complete wrong system and recovery resulting in a pretty hard brick and if they allow rooting and unlocking then they would be kind of obligated to help them fix it. Even if they said it voided the warranty then they would still get tons of calls complaining.

That just doesn't make any sense though, if I buy a laptop, and or a desktop, and I install Linux and then it blows up, they're just going to tell me LOL sorry too bad. Same thing should go for phones. But if something unrelated to the software messes up, I would expect them to cover it no matter what, just like on my laptop, while I am not running the original OS software that came with it, they honor the warranty for the headphone jack breaking. Because that has absolutely nothing to do with it. The point is, if I buy something it is mine, I should have an absolute one-hundred-percent administrator privileges on any device that I can purchase. If not I need to get an extremely heavy discount for not truly owning the device.
But this is getting off topic, the whole point is that we really need to get the G5 rooted, because it honestly would be the best Android device out there if it was rooted.

I think it mostly has to do with them not wanting the end user to be able to modify the device to get around things like paid hotspots and such. Carriers like sprint that have unlimited data but a paid by the GB hotspot plan potentially lose lots of money off of users getting it free with root. Also you probably have an ISP that rents you a cable modem. Those things are locked down and while you can buy your own - their locked down one, if modified can potentially increase speeds or bypass a meter. I think that ISPs (including cell carriers) like complete control so they can grab every penny and make it difficult to escape their grasps. Once again these are just my assumptions so I could be horribly wrong.

I bought my V10 last June and for the first time since my HTC EVO decided that I wouldn't root my phone. I have now come to the conclusion that I need root and after logging in to XDA (after almost a 1 year absence) I see that there's apparently no root for this phone.
Obviously I'm on Verizon - what are my choices for an alternative phone that is in the same class as the V10 but can be rooted? Or is a root solution for the V10 closer at hand?
Albine is almost there. Temporary root has been achieved. It should not be much longer for total root!

Yeah that was back in December...That was awhile ago man and most people can't get it to work. The only progress I've seen on root was a bunch of drama. Kinda disappointing really

Wonder if we could use a similar method. All we really need to do is replace Verizons bootloader with a debug one like that and we'll be golden.

Yes if it upgrades to 7.1.1 which they do in the store... Buy it from Google
If I had twrp port it might be easy to root.. Doesn't seem to exist.. I asked for it already on another thread, but no email.. I'm going to reach out to friend on hangouts and see if he feel like making one. He doesn't have this device so I'm not sure if he's interested.. The theory is this simple.. " fastboot boot twrp.img." once booted into twrp, we can flash twrp. Had to do it for my g4 and it works.. Also, I've seen twrp on locked bootloaders so that shouldn't be an issue.. No one's mention anything about that method though..
I think this died. Not complaining but it's been quite a few months since it was announced root was coming.
Good thing I'm rooted on 5.1.1 still. Would love to see root for Marshmallow (or greater) though.
I think Verizon and their hardware vendors should be aware that I will not buy a product or service if I can't have a rooted phone.
Looks like a Google phone next go around, much I don't want to go that route.

No. Does not appear so.
Only if u were already rooted/unlocked/ with TWRP and flashed the Update.zip stock rom already posted. Then u can flash Magisk and root works fine.
Upgrading via OTA or LG Official restore tool (Bridge) re-locks down everything as its reflashing it to pure stock.
I would assume that current means/exploits have not worked on this new version.

Far as I can tell, only 1 maybe 2 people working on this phone in their spare time....soo....Don't hold your breath.
If a rooted device is very important to you, other than waiting, one could buy a used V10 (or V20) that hasn't been updated off Swappa for pretty cheap. Or, sometimes folks sell already modded/rooted devices. (thats how i got both my V10's).

yeah this phone died real quick.i only like lg phones for the hi-fi dac's and sd card.thats it! ui, reliability,display(light bleed, burn in crappy lcd in general) ,battery life,optimization is absolute trash.literally my note 4 with note 7 software can do more than any lg phone aside from audio or camera.dont bother with the v20, some people also having bootlooping on those.lg is unreliable

I've searched and just got my new S9+ coming from LG and forums here are so different in gathering info. Is this variant rootable yet? If so can someone post a link... In the mean time I'll keep searching. :silly:

Nope it's not, and will be a loooooooong time before it is.
Well? After much research I was able to disable bloatware, get YouTube ad free and some more all without root. Honestly? This phone is good enough not to root really. I usually rooted to get a kernel to speed things up and get less lag, amazingly there's no need. Also for Xposed but I also don't see the need. So waiting for something that now I feel is not needed is ok. But having the itch to root will always exist. Lol

I'm on Snapdragon directly from T-mobile in the US.
Very little bloatware installed. And what was there I was able to uninstall easily including Facebook.
This was the first device I've owned that I've been able to do this without root.

I have been on iPhone for a long period of time because it is so easy to Jailbreak a phone once the program comes out, its just one click and done. I always recalled android phone goes through steps in order to be rooted, and i do mean really long steps, and the smallest mess up would brick the phone, i know now that the bricking the phone is a lot less likely. But it is still hard to root the phone..

With iphones you have to jailbreak just to get it semi-useful. My tmo s9+ had hardly anything already on it that wasn't easily removable. No need for root IMO.

Well, the main reason why I want to root is to find a bypass for the tethering. Example: On the iPhone there is a application called (Tetherme) it pretty much bypass the tethering provision so that the hotspot usage shows up as Phone usage not Hotspot usage.
I want to do that on the Samsung Galaxy s9+, I want to use the native tethering connectivity that is on the device and have it show up as phone usage not hotspot usage.
What I'm going to end up doing is selling my phone in order to purchase one directly from Samsung.

Let's ignore the Chinese SnapDragon variant that has BL unlock and root.
For all the other SnapDragon versions, is it possible that they will never get bootloader unlock and root? I'm looking at the S8+ which has been released well over a year now and the SnapDragon variants also seem to not have root or BL unlock.
EDIT: Wow, even looking back at the S7, LineageOS is only supported on the Exynos models and none of the SnapDragons:

It's unlikely. It takes finding an actual exploit to unlock the bootloader which comes with tradeoffs. You will trip Knox which will permanently void your warrenty, as well as make it so Samsung Pay never works again. In the S8 it also cripples the battery to never charge over 85% I believe.
It's possible that someone may find an exploit to achieve root / unlock bootloader. I wouldn't hold out hope though. If you really have to have root / custom roms, don't get the US Snapdragon device. Or get another phone altogether.

It's unlikely. It takes finding an actual exploit to unlock the bootloader which comes with tradeoffs. You will trip Knox which will permanently void your warrenty, as well as make it so Samsung Pay never works again. In the S8 it also cripples the battery to never charge over 85% I believe.

Thanks. For me root is necessary. I've used Samsung ever since the S2. Besides being very very slow to release OS updates, they are notorious for no longer supporting and updating a phone that hardware-wise still has a TON of life left in it. When this happens, instead of being forced to upgrade I simply install something like LineageOS on it and get years of extra use out of it.
So for me root is very very important and I'm pretty mad that they stopped it for SnapDragon since at least the S7. Sound reasonable?

it's a kind of "in the eye of the beholder" thing really.
Your not forced to upgrade phones. You don't have to actually root the phone to get use out of it once Samsung decides to stop issuing major OS updates, you can easily use the same OS for a long while. I know some brand new phones that are still being sold with older android OS's on them, and I know quite a few people who are getting a lot of use out of them.
Also it's not that they stopped it for the snapdragon phones as much as it is Samsung made the phone to be secure. If there is no exploit that can be found to install root on the phone then it means Samsung did what they were supposed to do when designing, creating and updating the phone. While I would also like the ability to root the phone at some point in time and customize it as I wish, I also do prefer to maintain the ability to keep my phone secure. Rooting the phone strips away some/most of that security by allowing full admin access to the phone's software (something that it was not originally intended to be sold with).
So like I said, it's an eye of the beholder thing....

As the other person said, there's nothing wrong with running an older OS. I typically upgrade every year or two, so I'm not too worried.
I used to always root and usually run something custom. The S9 Plus is the 2nd phone I haven't rooted,the LG v20 being the other. Honestly, the only thing I was missing was Titanium Backup. Google has gotten better about backing up app data. It isn't perfect, but it's a lot better. Samsung also included a decent backup app for restoring.
As for OS updates, we are already seeing Treble pay off. Sure, being able to use a GSI image would be nice but the alpha builds are further along than in previous years at the time from what I've read.
If you truly care about root / custom roms, you should probably get a pixel. They are the easiest to unlock, have the fastest updates, and will play so nicely with GSI images.
I wish I had researched this aspect of the 9/S9+ more before buying one.
I came from the S5, and the Galaxy S before, and didn't realize that the phone hadn't had root for a while (and was looking so doubtful)
Titanium Backup *was* a favorite root-enabled program, as well as a few others, and I liked LineageOS.
But I will probably stay with this phone for a while, now that I own it. It has been a good phone -- I just liked the freedom of a rooted phone.

For all the other SnapDragon versions, is it possible that they will never get bootloader unlock and root? I'm looking at the S8+ which has been released well over a year now and the SnapDragon variants also seem to not have root or BL unlock.
