First of I would like to say thanks to this forum.
I try not to post any problems that have already been answered and this forum was a big help in getting my xda unlocked.
However I had only had my phone in working condition for 2 weeks, enough time to start to like it, when it fell and cracked.
I ordered a new glass screen (no bleeding ink) and had it overnighted. I sucessfully swapped out the broken scree, but in the process I screwed up the phone. So here is whats going on with it, if anyone can help me out it would be awesome.
When taking it apart I accidently broke 2 of the connectors for the ribbon cables on the back of the pcb. Now the phone wont turn on. The screen comes up but its just white and I cant tell if the os is loading.

Well, I guess it depends on how broken the connectors are, but this definitely doesn't sound good...
If you post a few close-up pictures, I'll tell you if there's any hope for fixing it.

One of those 3 connectors lead to the screen.
My wild guess would be that it's not porperly connected since it's borken.
In that case, I would have done one of two things:
1. Buy a connector through an electronics component vendor, then ,manually replace the broken one or have a electronics lab do it for me.
2. Solder the wires to the connector's base manually (or in a lab) to over-ride it. (I hope you understand what I mean).
At any case, my guess would be a broken connection somewhere in the connectors (one of the 3). This can probably be fixed that way or another.
BTW - I have a lot of dust between the glass and the screen. How do you remove the glass from the screen (it seems to be attached firmly somehow)??
To take the glass apart from the lcd, there are 4 metal tabs (2 at the top and 2 on the bottom) you can pry a thin flat-head screwdriver between the metal tabs (you will see what I am talking about, when you look closer). It will sound bad but its just the glue coming apart.
I tried to get the connectors but had no luck finding a match.
So I am going to part out the phone.
Ill be posting the ebay auctions for the lcd screen, the new glass piece, the motherboard, the battery/case and whatever misc accesories I have lying around.
Before I put all the parts on ebay, I figured I would give the people on here a crack at it. I will entertain all reasonable offers. Send me a PM.

Broke my digitizer and did the job myself using the youtube guide above. Just used straight up superglue to glue digitizer to frame. I put a bunch on the top and bottom and very little on the sides.
Amazingly the phone worked when i put it back together... for a while until I screwed up one of the ribbons by opening it a bunch more times. Be extra careful with these, especially the volume/camera ribbon. You can bend it pretty easily trying to slide it back into its slot.

My Arix got under the tires of a car (please dont ask how ) and only the digitizer broke, then i replace it with an OEM digitizer from amazon and now the proximity sensor is malfunctioning (Turns off the screen when im not near it or doesnt turns off when im near it), and there is a line of the screen that doesn't respond to tact. could it be the digitizer that came defective, or maybe it was the installation? oh, the other digitizer was broken and all but the light sensor was working fine and also the other thing. Sorry for my bad grammar.

I replaced my digitizer, and had the EXACT same thing happen (not the light sensor but the line in the screen that doesnt respond to touch).
Get a new digitizer, but get it from someone else.

No. I sold it and let someone else deal with it. Didn't have the time to replace the digitizer again. Too much of a hassle.
I just replaced a digitizer on an atrix... i didnt put any adhesive on it because there was what i thought was adhesive strips on the digitizer... but there's strips on the screen that doesnt respond, i heated it n tried reattaching the digitizer a few times n sometimes the home and back button will work, sometimes they wont... any suggestions? could the lack of adhesive cause this?

Just went through 3 digitizers in my repair, and wanted to share my experience/caveats
I bought one digitizer from All4Cellular for $25, and the others with a 20% discount a few days later, for $20.
I installed
the first using the RepairUniverse Youtube 'how-to' method, and had a heck of a time threading the flex cables through the slot. Bent/twisted it too much, and nothing responded on the touchscreen, so I read some forum posts on how fragile they were, and regarded that as user error.
Got the idea to move the LCD screen from another RepairUniverse YouTube video and a previous post here, and tried installing the digitizer from the front face of the phone. It was still a delicate matter to bend the flex cable so that it fit through the slot, and then re-position the LCD and align the sticky strips of the digitizer on the LCD and casing. Part of the digitizer worked this time - a 1cm vertical strip on the left fowled any attempt to touch icons or use a keyboard, so I thought I had damaged things again (doh!).
Hoping third time was the charm, I completely disassembled the phone using the guide in the 'ifixit' link, since a digitizer/case assembly was suggested in another thread. The rear camera just needs to be raised above the casing so the thin plate can move upward, and the LCD pops out easily if the sides of the casing are delicately pulled. The digitizer can be positioned easily and with minimal bending/twisting of the flex cables.
When reconnecting everything the third time, I noticed that pressing down on the front camera / digitizer connection *with the rubber boot in place* didn't pass when pulling the connected assembly upward. So I pulled the rubber boot out of the way and snapped the camera / digitizer connection firmly, then re-inserted the boot. A loose connection might have been the culprit for the nonfunctioning part of the digitizer in the second test.
@MrSaba - I had the same issue with capacitive buttons - perhaps because the screen senses touch and disables those buttons. Replacing the digitizer solved the issue

Here's my story - broke a screen, as usual slipped from my pocket. though broken, digitizer worked fine. after replacement with new one (digitizer only) - no luck it didn't work. bought a new one, this time with a plastic part around it to avoid damage to it's cable. after careful repair no luck once again - does not work at all. downloaded a testing app (i was able to remote control the phone with a piece of soft called androidscreencast), everything is ok, except digitizer. checked and rechecked all ribbons and connectors 10 times, nothing seems to be broken or twisted.
what's your opinion, is it worth buying third one ? what part of my repair went wrong ?

Not all digitizers are created equal. The ones that ship with the red stripe on the backing are junk. Spend more money and yes buying with a frame is key. Did you try reinstalling the original screen or did that ship sail already?

The first one was with the red stripe indeed, from china. The one with a frame came from UK, "used but tested OK". original screen is gone - tore off flex cable while removing.
Well, update...
2 screens bought on eBay were BAD. Had to wait full month for authorised motorola service to change the digitizer. Must say though that both merchants on ebay refunded, no questions asked. Lessons learned - pay more, wait longer, never give up

What I noticed on their video was that their folded digitizer connector magically unseats itself during the disassembly transition. I had to pry mine off based purely on guesswork and think I might have broken the flip-chip that is stuck onto the frame with double-sided tape. Like yours, my touchscreen doesn't respond at all, despite there being no cable tears. I'm going to try and re-heat that flip chip and maybe get the connections to work again (doubtful).
To anyone else out there attempting this... when you go to remove the touchscreen, HEAT THE CONNECTOR so that you can gently pry it out!
Bad screen I got 3 before it worked its fine now if old one partially works new one doesn't screen is junk took mine apart several times to figure out screens were junk...guess they felt sorry for me give me my money back plus free working screen.from amazon
Also that lock clamp u mentioned first video I watched didn't show unlocking that I just pulled it out and pushed back in it was the 2 screen that I figured out it needed to be pryed loose by the white clamp but guess I didn't damage it..

I have just put in my second digitiser. The first was one had a red stripe, which was junk, the second on I bought had the plastic round the edge and the digitiser.
I put it in and it worked fine no dead spots at all. Then 12 hours in it started to stop working intermittently. Then 24 hours after that while on charge its dead again. I reflashed notattrix and still nothing. I've confirmed all the ribbon connectors are firmly in place and everything looks right.
Any ideas whats wrong?

Hi there, it's only me or the cover for USB and HDMI (but the second one is less important) sucks? opening it's ok with my nail but get back in closed position is hard -.-, and I have the fear to break the small plastic connection :S tips? I'm thinking about remove them...
I have got a technique to do it, but it's hard to explain. I push the top of the cover inside first, then the bottom.

Exactly, it slides in at an angle, then click in the bottom.
I agree it looks flimsy; I had the same fear with the usb port cover on my X10 though, and it lasted well over 2 years of daily charging.
I am used to it now, it's still pointless though. My Nexus One had no cover and the USB port is still working fine after well over 2 years. I don't know why some manufacturers think a cover is necessary.

It's way prettier, obviously. I saw a picture on here with the cover removed, and it makes the design of the phone sink below sea level.
A flapless port only looks good on a phone with a metal or proper metal-color body. Like the Xperia P. But the Xperia S would look like crap without port flaps.

Yeah but that's because you are taking the flap off when it was designed with it on. Phones designed with a flush usb port and no flap look fine.
It's like saying cutting the roof off your SUV didn't look good. A convertible sports car looks ace.
I don't think the XS would look bad with no port flap. Look at the headphone socket, that's very nicely styled. If they'd done the same with USB I'd be happier.
My samsung tocco ultra had a similar style flap to the XS and lasted me 2 years just fine despite me thinking it would only last two days.
The galaxy s had a slide cover which mostly did the job but wasn't exactly pretty. The pins in micro usb are pretty fine wouldn't take much ingress to mess it up.
I think when the flap spare pieces are available online I will get one and make proper opening for USB for it and leave it there permanently.
Some smart manufacturer could make a delete with correct opening. They could have made it just like Xperia P and it would look very nice.
I was thinking about such same thing. Waiting for spare USB flap availability.
I wonder if a replacement flap could be worked into a clip on case?

Ace, works for me too. I'd been faffing something chronic til now with it but that's deffo the method.
Good to hear that other people have had previous, port-protected Sony's last a couple of years and more OK, especially with 2 year contracts almost being the norm these days. All told it's encouraging, therefore, to read that Sony seems to be some kinda master of the flaps.

I find the flaps very sturdy so I don't mind if they are a bit of a learning experience. I pop the bottom part, then the top part and it works for me XD.
On my X10 it was easy to remove but it was pretty fragile, so I would rather have it the way it is now, then none at all .

i think, it's hard to say whether it is better to have those flaps or not to have them (like in the xperia arc). of course, it also depends on how often you use them.
because of wifi, usb is mostly only needed for flashing, but at least you have to oben the usb-flap once a day for charging
but at the end the phone looks better with them...
The flaps don't bother me that much, but what does bother me is how loose they become after you have opened them a few times. It makes it feel like there is a loose spot in the casing.

I left mine charging overnight and when I came to unplug it I noticed that the flap had a crack in both sides somehow - despite me being super careful with it. It's not broken - some kind of membrane within seems to be holding it together somehow - but it bends along the crack now and it's a matter of time before it snaps completely.

It's vulnerable when being charged, sticking out worryingly... hopefully spares will become available. I don't like them, on mine it has become loose and doesn't latch in at the bottom properly anymore. It has also list it's matte black and is quite shiny now, as is also the 'chin' bit at the bottom under clear strip, there's a definite bit of wear under the back and home buttons. :-/ 3 months old :|

Well my cover finally cracked the other day, the little tail that stays in the phone always cracked in half. So half is still stuck in the phone and then I have the whole cover left. It won't stay on anymore so must look for a new one.
Any one seen the USB cover for sale anywhere ?

The ZU is nearing its 2 year birthday, I've had mine for about 8 months now. So far I have been more than happy with it, although I do have to say I'm quite disappointed with the build quality. To be more specific, the paint job of the aluminium/plastic parts. It literally starts to fall off/rub away, whereas I still baby my ZU. This puzzles me and tells me there is nothing brushed about the 'aluminum (is it plastic?), just an ordinary paint job. Also, I've noticed that the material is rather weak, getting dents easily.
What is your experience concerning the wear & tear of this device?
I must agree that the paint of the aluminium parts is rather weak, my 5 months old ZU already got some of it torn. In addition it gets easily bended, when I put my phone on a table or sth the right bottom corner is like 1mm over the surface. And it scratches a lot, especially the back, seriously I'm only putting it in or from the pocket with no keys or anything and it looks like some really angry cat wanted to play with it. However the front is untouched, despite using pencil a lot to navigate, but the oleophobic coating have gone just after a month and because of it random touches appears. Aparr from these, I have no complaints and sorry for my English, not my native lang

I bought my second Z Ultra today
The screen on my July 2013 ZU broke with my thighs pressure while I was driving. I thought it was safe but it cracked.
Service centre in India wanted Rs. 10400 to replace screen. Grey market Rs. 8000. And it would lose waterproofing after replacement. New Z Ultra is Rs. 18500. So I bought my second ZU today (Feb 15 make)
Last time a Leather cover was given free but this time its DK30 magnetic dock which is good. I will keep check on price for screen and when it drops I will replace my broken ZUs screen and gift it to my wife who is using my old Note 1
My new ZU is on 4.4.4 so I am thinking if I should upgrade to Lollipop or not. I dont like Lollipop. I used it on Moto E2 and it looks crap.
I have two Ultra and both are in mint condition. No scratches, nothing. Not a single noticeable defect. They move along in cases but still. Have not experienced any denting or anything else that would put them in a worse position so I am perfectly happy with the quality.
I think mine is just over a year old now
Tons of scratches on the back, and some on the front (i don't use a case or screen protector)
I've got it running the latest slimkat and I've got no complaints with regards to this OS

I use a book style cover to protect mine, and it's still in quite good condition. I reckon on having to buy a new cover every 4 months as the plastic frame which holds the ZU cracks or breaks, particularly at the corner where the USB socket is present and there's not enough plastic to be strong.
There's a ding on the corner near the USB connector where I dropped it and the case's missing plastic wasn't able to protect it.
I haven't removed the anti-shatter plastic film on front or back. You can't see the fine pattern of scratches on the front when the phone is turned on. Sometimes I clean the screen with a slightly damp towel, and if I rub hard it polishes out the scratches a bit.
Battery life is still good, I don't think it's diminished too much. Sony have always had good battery technology (apart from when they had exploding laptop batteries!).
Overall then my XZU has been a good phone and I've had good value out of it as I use it all the time - I don't have a tablet, I go straight for a laptop if I need to do proper work.
The XZU is my phone, ebook reader, email reader, news reader, podcast & music player, GPS mapper, instant messaging console (G hangouts), shopping assistant (checking prices in shops with barcode scanner), movie viewer (netflix), chromecast controller (netflix) and occasionally acts as a game console.
My backplate cracked so I used the extended warranty I bought with the phone to fix it.
Sony said they couldn't replace it because its discontinued so they bought out my warranty and phone for the total amount I paid. So I got a free ultra basically.
I fixed the backplate myself. I'd really like to fix the faux aluminum edges. They sell them online but u don't want to go in blind and dissect my phone.
Almost mint here (everything is perfect except that the screen ASF is shinning just a little less than the back one) after eight months. I have two cases, the plastic one I use 95% of the time and the Krusell leather book one that I only use when I think I need an extra protection.

The Z Ultra has one of the best build qualities IMHO:good: . I do not have a scratch, paint job issue etc. Only problem I had after a year of use was the USB protective flap:crying:. Until it was ok, I used to wash the phone whenever it got dirty. Although the usb protective flap is available on ebay, I'm skeptical about opening, fearing it might lose the original build. If anyone has any ideas - please share.
I put screen protector on my replacement XZU when the one I purchased was replaced under warranty. Only problem is stuff building up in the cracks; dirt, dust, etc. builds up in the cracks of the body, and I HATE that. I also have the ? lens attachment case that I leave on all the time, where the two upper corners have cracked off.

I don't think you have to dissect your phone for the USB flap only.
Just buy a new one on eBay and replace it by fitting the string attached into its hole. ?
Edit: to stay in topic, my Ultra is a D1 unit, exchanged like one month later for another brand new under warranty, and it's been y daily driver since.
Paint have come off of 3 out of 4 corners, but other than that, the phone is pristine.
You should see my old GS3 (which now has my mother in law): all plastic-aluminum-painted edges are broken in several points, there's no paint on the on/off button anymore, plastic back cracked... ?
Overall, I'm super happy and my phone is still as elegant as was when I first opened the box. ?
My screen got hairline cracks twice. Sony repaired it free under the warranty. I also purchased 3 off ebay with cracked screens for under $100 each. I got them repaired through sony for free. $$$$

The phones happened to still be under warranty. When Sony asked for the receipt I just showed them the ebay receipt. I didn't think they would repair it, but they did......4 times....?

That's not only luck, you're the luckiest man alive when it comes to warranties...!
I mean, like 8 out of 10 have all kinds of problems with warranty, you're the live exception! ?

the usb flap is one easy replacemnt. just pull out the existing one neatly just a little pressure, make sure to hold the extension plastic that connects to the flap rather than the flap itself. When you get the replacement just insert the new replacement the same way you pulled out the old one:good:

I ordered the flap of eBay and replaced it as per your instructions. Jiffy - my ZU is back to being new. Thanks!
Have been using Z Ultra for almost 1.5 years now but this is my 3rd Ultra. First one was silver color and I used it for about a year and since the paint in the side had peeled off, sold it and bought Lumia 1520 but screen was not upto my satisfaction (Size-wise), so again bought Z ultra Black color. Unfortunately, within a week, my kid threw moto360 and it fell on the ZU screen, it cracked and touch is not working (Thank God, nothing happened to Moto360). I Checked with Sony as it was hardly a week old but since it was physical damage, they said it will cost around $200 to replace the screen
Instead of that, I went and bought a new one for around ˜ $250 during Christmas offer. It has slight scratches on the back as I dont like to use back protection while the front is in pristine condition. Eagerly waiting for p8Max/LeTV Max now, provided it is in my budget!

I'm with you there, don't rule out the Mediapad X2 either There is a plastic film on the back, which you can easily peel off. Try it out You can stick on a tempered glass sheet on there easily afterwards.

Thanks but wouldnt 'Sony' logo come off as well if I were to remove the plastic film?
Tried to replace my broken ultra screen but damaged the main ribbon that connects to the motherboard. Have bought a new ribbon but not sure how i should attach it. Anyone know?
The original ribbon looked like it was just glued on.

Made by robot...to small for human eye and precision. It requires you to have a facility to have it mounted again or a solder oven if you are able to handle the parts with this kind of precision needed.
Toss it in the bin or sell it...you can buy a new device for less than the cost of attaching it/send for repair and get a new motherboard.
If you know some old school gaming console modder you might have some luck. Not many have these precise skills these days.
Ok thanks for the info. Do you know if there is a way to boot the phone without using the power button. It appears that the new screen works as when I plug in a charger the Sony logo on the screens turns on as too does the pic of the battery. I just cant get the power button to work. It looks like this maybe the area affected from the small damaged part of the ribbon.
If only I could boot it. Pity its not like an iphone that boots upon charging.

If you can get the volume button to work you can boot the phone with fastboot reboot
anisotropic adhisive film/tape
the adhisive that attaches the flex cable to pcb is anistropic adhisive film. its fairly easy to attach the cable but the materials is very expensive and hard to handle. I have replace my ZU flex cable using a strip of this film and a spatula soldering iron or t-type soldering iron(because its T shaped). clamp the board firmly, applied the ADF, pre-heat it to 50°c, align the flex and apply heat 150°c with 3 kilos of force for 25 seconds and your done. I got my ADF form work.
Ive spent more than I wanted to, to fix my Ultra. £50 for screen and £20 for other bits and bobs including new ribbon and back glass.
Just annoyed that the rubbish youtube videos showing how to replace the screen did not make clear how to remove the motherboard from the phone without damaging the ribbon.
Anyway I will see if anyone can glue the the new ribbon to the motherboard for me but will only pay around £10. Some of the folks I emailed want £20 to just to diagnose the issue which was already clearly stated to them. Therefore it looks like this may not happen.
Otyerwise I will wait for a broken Ultra to sell on ebay for around £10.
Love this phone for its size but have the Z3 and Z3 tablet as my two daily phones to keep me going till the Z5 premium.

it is possible to reuse the adhesive if the adhesive on the connectors are not lifted or removed.
