Difference between Smart switch vs Odin (sammobile) vs TWRP backup - Galaxy S6 Edge Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, trying to found out what the difference between these three application are.
I've googled about a bit but no one really has explained what the difference between the three.
Goal; to return to stock ROM for a Samsung s6 edge (but could be any Samsung device)
Smart switch; Will restore most upto date firmware but will delete everything on your phone, requires some information (S/N)
Odin (hence sammobile/updato); Allows you to flash the stock rom but won't delete any internal data
TWRP backup; A custom backup that will restore you to your ROM and settings, won't delete internal data. Most reliable and convenient.
Is this right? I've also read that smart switch doesn't support many devices or the reinstalling stock firmware is only on limited devices
I'm basically trying to find a way to restore my device like how iPhones have the restore function on iTunes for when things go south or you've modded yourself to oblivion.

You are pretty much correct.
Smart switch - mainly for backing up and restoring data. Can do emergency firmware recovery if things have gone wrong. But doesn't always work and won't always detect some phones.
Odin - to flash any stock firmware obtained from sammobile/updato. If you download a firmware and it comes as one file (AP) then you will lose all data. If it comes in 5 files (BL,AP,CP,CSC,home_CSC) you must flash home_CSC and data will not be wiped
TWRP - a twrp backup is a full nandroid backup (all partitions will be backed up) you would have to flash twrp through Odin first then make a full backuo then restore but it will restore to how your phone is now. Exactly the same. So in your case not recommended to use twrp. Also flashing twrp will void knox warranty 0x1.
So your easiest and safest thing to do in your case is to download your stock firmware from www.updato.com
Flash the firmware through Odin. If you want to keep data then flash home_csc. If you want a full wipe then use .CSC
I'd always recommend backing up data first. For pictures Google photos is a good idea. Or just use google/Samsung account to backup all data.
Then after flashing you can just restore.

Titanium Backup will do everything you asked for (I recomment the Pro version and you MUST be rooted).
It will backup and restore apps and data, and will also freeze or uninstall any app.
It's on the market for free, but I really do recommend paying the small amount for the full version.

+1 Ti is one of the few apps I would recommend to anyone that wants to flash roms. You can backup all your apps and settings before a flash and then restore quickly and easily. The freeze function is very handy also. IMO you buy this one and never look back. A MUST HAVE.
A nand backup will be used to restore the phone as it already exists. It does not backup apps and settings specifically but you can pull apks and such out of one. Basically you do a nand before you start playing around and if you screw something up or just take an instant dislike to the new rom you flashed you can go into recovery and restore that nand and your phone will be just like you never did anything. It will not however back up your radio.
What I do is backup a few apps data separately and then go into Ti and backup all my apps and system data. I boot into recovery and I make a nand. Then I go over to usb storage and I move the entire contents of the sd over to my computer. This will have both the nand and the Ti backup on it. I delete the entire internal storage after I have taken a quick look to make sure that the backup on my pc is good. This gives me a completely fresh base to start a new rom from. Once I have the new rom flashed I move my ti backup over and restore. I then move the other data that the backup contains that I want back on the phone over and I'm up and running. I keep my music and other stuff that is just going to move from one flash to the next on my sd card as it isnt wiped in the process even if you do a hard reset and it can just stay there without the hassle of backing it up and restoring it. Do not delete your backup until you are sure that you have everything you may want back across to your phone. I usually keep it until the next rom when I start the process over with a new backup.
@JJEgan - which part
@johncmolyneux ,@krabman - thnx guys
so int. usb storage will also be wiped in the process, right?
also can u clarify
- How to get cwm recovery menu screen from PHONE Switched OFF state(like we see by using the function from cwm app -> reboot into CWM rec)
- how can i delete samsung hub apps by editing system and framework files(or if any other file for that matter)?

[Q] restore nand backup from another phone

Hi all !
if i restore nand backup from another phone on my phone + restore my orgininal EFS folder does it mean my phone will work perfectly without any surprise ????
thanks a lot

totally not recommended. you could be coming from different android version, or even if same version, different manufacturers may have different setup.
if you feel adventurous, you can try just reinstalling the "data" portion though, that is where your installed apps are placed. but be warned it also contains some previous system settings which may not be compatible with sgs3.
better alternative is to install Titanium backup, it has function to read from nandroid backups so you can pick and choose what you want to extract from there.
First of all this is the wrong section to post this, go to the q&a section instead.
If the other phone was not the same exact model of phone then DO NOT restore the nandroid. Like the other commenter mentioned you can use titanium backup to save and restore apps or even use it to extract the apps from the nandroid.
Hi all,
I remember my first Froyo rom on my GS1 was provided as a nandroid package..
Questions go in the Q/A section
Fyi, nandroid doesn't touch the EFS partition or the bootloaders, or radio, just the system, data, cache and boot (kernel) partitions.
You *can* restore another person's nandroid onto your phone, but its really not a good idea (someone shipped roms as nandroids for a bit...), and you shouldn't need to touch the EFS unless something goes wrong, and a rom should never touch the EFS.
Edit: As people above say, don't restore a nandroid from another model of phone onto your device, if you want to move data from phone to phone like that use titanium backup or the like.
i want to copy a nand backup from a S3 orange 16GB onto my phone S3 SFR 32GB, because i have no solution for a "NO SMS,NO CALL BUT INTERNET WORKING" problem

Well in that case at your risk by Nand i hope you mean a CWM Nandroid recovery .
Its often best to have the same version of recovery to restore backup if first attempt fails ..
Be far simpler to flash a stock SGS3 Orange rom via Odin .

Question about backup

Hello, everyone.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 and would like to install a custom rom on it, but before I do that, I need some clarification about backup, just in case I feel a need to change back to the default rom.
I downloaded and purchased Titanium Backup and did a ''Backup all user apps + system data'' on it, this is saved on both my SD card and on my PC.
I also downloaded ROM Manager and did a backup via the Recovery mode, this is saved on both my SD card and on my PC as well.
My question is, if I now download and install a custom rom on my phone but end up not liking it, will I be able to use this backup to get my phone to the exact state as it is in now? All my apps, contacts, settings etc?
Thank you.
you can restore everything back to the way it was except the modem. so if u do flash a different fw and want to go back take Note of modem and when u restore old Rom flash back modem via recovery and all should be good

How do I back up and restore Mega

I have two I527 phones - but one is ATT and one is Rogers Canada. Both are rooted.
I know I can use my backup pro or Titanium to back up and restore the apps and their settings.. but...
How do I make a mirror copy of one phone onto the other - meaning - I want to be able to copy the entire set up - including home page and all the pages.. So that they would have identical screen configuration - all configurations actually.. so that I can swap the sim card and SD card to swap between phones.
I am seeking a paid user friendly solution - either from app store or windows software.
Thanks.
Take a full backup (including data) using recovery and restore it in the other phone (only if both the device are of same model)

This is not a useful response.. Full back up with what? I don't know which program would restore all the page set up also. I do know how to backup using mybackup pro.. but it does not restore the pages.. I don't think titanium does it either but I didn't try
You said you have two identical phones and both of your units are rooted. So the best and easiest and fastest way to make 'a mirror copy' is to make nandroid backup of the first one using custom recovery and after transfering backup file to SD of the other one - restoring this backup using custom recovery in the second phone. This way you will get 'mirror copy' of the first phone onto second one wth all system and data.
I hope you know therms 'custom recovery' and 'nandroid backup' (no offence).

No offence taken.
Frankly, I have done custom recovery, years ago.. I have never used nandroid backup..
Based on your reply, it occurs to me that the only way to restore a "mirror copy" of the phone is to follow your guidance..
Unfortunately, I made a mistake in not being clear. Both are I527 but are not identical. They have different ROMs.. one is Rogers Canada and the other is ATT.. Therefore, I don't think the custom recovery path would work.
Any other options? I was hoping there would be a paid software..

no paid software for backup data. the one and only with CWM (Philz recovery)
use Philz recovery, its more easy for backup and restore. but after backup you must copy the data in clockworkmod in your computer because the data in sdcard sometimes corrupt and you cannot do restore anymore

update 4.4.2 to 6.1

I haven't updated my phone in a while. I don't get the over the air updates anymore. I saw the new update and thought it was time.. My phone is rooted and I'm running G900tuvu1ane6 and want to update to 6.1 and then root the phone again. Can you let me know if I can do a straight update without messing anything up or do I need to do an incremental update? Also, what is the best way to root the new version. Are there any issues with mm that I should be aware of. Thanks in advance.

No. You can go straight to 6.0.x
Flash twrp flash supersu
Not really. There's been a crap load fixed/improved since KitKat tho lol
Hi!
Yes, you can
You can by using ODIN
Go to sammobile to download the last MM version
Download ODIN (sammobile has a link to ODIN)
The phone will be swiped. You'll lost all data
Fisrt boot can take 8 minutes or more
The root again
So I'm running a backup now with twrp. If my phone gets wiped with this update, what is the best way to save and restore settings like app data and personal info. I think twrp is just for a full backup and restore correct?

You can restore just data with twrp but honestly I highly suggest just starting fresh especially going from KitKat to marshmallow. So much has changed betwen the 2 from dalvik to art, file structure, etc etc. Back up your contacts and just restore them. Download all your apps back log in etc etc. Take you 10 minutes longer and starting completely fresh and clean.

I'm agree
There are a lot of changes from KK to MM.
you can use google backup and restore mechanism to restore some kind of configuration: when you are running first wizard google ask: "restore from previous phone"?
This restores desktop confiig and install your apps you installed from play store
Whatsapp restore automatically from last backup
Call log and SMS can be backup and restore with "SMS backup and restore"

I followed instructions I found in another thread but it didn't wipe the phone completely. Not sure what I did wrong but the phone seems to be working well with the existing apps.

Odin doesn't touch data by its default settings so did nothing wrong
I was trying to remove bloatware and I've been finding threads for other phone's firmware but they have different apps. I've seen some apps that remove bloatware automatically but don't know if I should use one of them or just uninstall apps through titanium backup. If I use titanium have you guys seen a good list for the newest firmware?

Help
Helloooo
I have a galaxy s5 900T, but I am in Europe and I have problems with the mobile network.
Individual network frequencies are unavailable, so I do not have 3G and 4G networks in some places.
I'm thinking to install software from Europe version of s5 900f on my s5 909T but I am not sure is that possible.
Can someone explain to me whether it is possible or why not. For example, CyanogenMod is the same ROM for both models (900F and 900T, and mire else s5 with Qualcomm procesor.
