Sound recording quality - LG V30 Questions & Answers

Can anyone test video recording on a concert or with very loud music? LG said it can record very loud music and I'm curious about sound recording quality.

It records very loud music by turning the ear speaker into another microphone for high decibel environment.

Already did that about two weeks ago. I do believe the links are in my camera first impressions thread in the LG V30 News and Discussion section.

Yes please more LG V30 music recordings the more the better ☺

Just curious if the high volume audio recording feature kicks in only with the HD audio app, video recording, or with other 3rd party apps as well? Seems like it needs to be a software feature design to take advantage, unless controlled by motherboard firmware of some sort.

V30 concert recording
Hi,
i have a few concert videos onlone recorded with the V30 , but i am not allowed to post a link before i have 10 posts because i am a new user.
If anybody wants to check the videos out, you can visit my Youtube channel named Didi O by searching for :
Helloween - I Want Out @ Porsche Arena Stuttgart 2017
gain turned down, limiter at 0db, low cut off - the phone switched to concert mode from the beginning on
HELLOWEEN - A TALE THAT WASN`T RIGHT @ PUMPKINS UNITED WORLD TOUR 2017 STUTTGART
at 1:30 the phone switches to concert mode and the sound gets worse, does anyone know how to deactivate concert mode because in my opinion it is enough to turn the gain down?
Rise Against - People Live Here @ Festhalle Frankfurt 15.11.2017
the phone did not switch to concert mode, the sound is much clearer than in concert mode
Sleeping With Sirens The Strays London 2017
at 0:58 the phone switched automatically to concert mode and the sound gets worse
I hope that my V30 concert videos are useful and i hope i could manage to switch the concert mode off one time so that i can record better audio only with the gain turned down.
If anyone has suggestions let me know.

So after watching your videos, I noticed that when it switches over to concert mode, it is recording in MONO. That's partly why it sounds worse. Makes sense being that the ear piece it uses is only one speaker. So if you only have one speaker to switch over as a mic, you basically have 1 mic. Making it a mono recording.

Thanks for your reply, yes this is possible.
I have two audio channels (left and right with the same signal because of only one mic) and the speaker taken as a mic has another recording quality - thats it - but it is worse thats the problem.
In my opinion they better had turned the gain down again if the phone switches to concert mode instead of taking the speaker as mic.
Maybe i could increase the sound level a little bit with some foam/tape on the two mics so that the phone didn´t switch to concert mode, but this would also change the recording quality.

Does the V30 have the option of changing gain settings like the V10 does? With my V10 I have a setting in the video settings that allows me to dial the gain back a bit, and also change the direction it is coming from. I am sure that is something you have checked for though right?

Yes, in manual video mode you can adjust the gain level, turn on the low pass filter and use the limiter - not more, the v10 has more options.
To turn on the low pass filter makes no sense because the bass is missing in such recordings, the limiter is in my recordings always at 0db.
I turned the gain already totally down and the phone even switches to concert mode if it is getting too loud.
For me it would be fine if i could only turn the gain down at a concert without concert mode, that records only in mono and with the speaker as microphone.
I dont´t know how loud the music was but i think it must have been 100 db or a little more.
LG says that the V30 can handle up to 140db but i don´t know when the concert mode switches on automatically, in my case on the video Helloween - A Little Tale That Wasn´t Right the phone went to concert mode even when it wasn´t too loud.
On my other videos the concert mode switched on from the beginning.

I have a suggestion. May we suggest you to organize those videos shot with V30 into playlist "Concert video audio camera recordings with LG V30". That way it'd be first when people would search youtube for concert recordings of V30
Does V30 let one record audio in LPCM format when shooting in manual settings like V20 did?

I don't know what audio format it is but in HIFI mode it records in 24bit and in stereo, when the phone switches to concert mode it records the audio in mono using the speaker as a mic.
The Sleeping With Sirens video above is not recorded vith the V30 the Helloween videos and the Rise Against - People Live Here video are from the V30 but The Sleeping With Sirens The Strays London 2017 video is recorded with the V30.

I just recorded some of the Trans Siberian orchestra last night. Normal mode. No issues switching into concert mode.
It was not that loud so perhaps that has some to do with it.

Correct. You have to cross the 120db threshold to activate the RAM. Chances are that is outside of TSO's standard procedures.

Was not able to tell where it got into mono with this one. Then i played with it in an audio program and you're right it gets into mono early on and remains that way only to recover at the end when the music stops and the applause begins

Its around 1:38, stays in mono then recovers arund 2:00. Once the volume increases aorund 2:45 it gets into mono again and recovers only towards the end when the applause starts. Its quite seamless though

Not 0:58, it's at 2:58 as the fans start screaming, the rest of the clip sounds fine if not entirely clear for some reason

Can you explain how you know it gets into concert mode ? does it say concert mode in the view finder
All i can tell is if you do not change any audio settings it will record as is and when the volume gets too loud then it will use the headset speaker as a mic and disable the remaining ones.
I don't know if there is a way to disable this receiver as mic functionality, maybe if you try with the limiter at -3db or -6dB. This will prevent levels from reaching 0 and maybe not require headset mic to activate. If you do so let us know it will be interesting to see the difference.

If it is getting too loud the displays shows that the phone switched to concert mode even when the gain level is turned down.
I will try to use the limiter at -3db and -6db on friday at a loud concert and let you know if the phone also will turn on automatically the concert mode .

Thank you! This explains why my FB Live videos sound terrible but my regular videos sound amazing! I am a music promoter and I pretty much exclusively record music performances.

If you're still interested.... Using HD Audio Recorder, holding the phone vertically records in Mono; while holding in landscape, records in Stereo. This applies to both Concert and Custom Modes.

nov 12: edited the title since this turned more into a discussion about the audio pops and clicks from the VIDEO CAMERA and VOICE RECORDING apps....may be a codec problem!? EVERYONE has this; let's bring it to HTC's attention! i currently have an open ticket iwth the escalations department to which he called me, and i sent him the links to my youtube showing all of the clicking noises in every video marked HTC Rezound:
www.youtube.com/ochsbeatdown
let's bring this to their attention!!
Use Antutu or another bench, they tell you R/W speeds. About the only thing they are good for, lol.
sweet thanks...yeah i wondered what the speed is for that..figured maybe making videos on a faster speed may get rid of those pops and clicks..however i just did, and it didn't do **** lol
I haven't recorded any videos on my Rezound yet, still, lol.
I did a few more guitar videos today.. Same clicks and pops. Meh

Is it while focusing or zooming? Or is it just the sound is too loud entering the device?
Might be when sound is too loud. I don't notice any focusing going on but that's a damn good idea. I think we can turn auto focus off in video too. It's like a digital blip noise so i don't know what exactly it is
It also did it with an acoustic, which isn't loud at all.... So i think it does it irregardless of sound

I recorded a quick video of my puppies play fighting in my livingroom. The only "noise" I hear is my phone vibrating and the notification of Kenny Powers "Dollar Dollar Bills Ya'll" when I get a text mid video! I am pleasantly surprised by this though! My X2 would stop recording if I got a message of any kind. I like that this records right through it, so you can just put it on silent and record away!
hmm...yeah, here's the noise i hear:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q-UQWEXvGQs
very noticeable here; did this yest
I hear it... weird man. My phone doesn't ever do that, that I know of. I got a friend who can play about as well as you. I will see if he will let me record a clip to compare. Hopefully it is only hardware on your end.
hopefully its NOT hardware! hahaha i don't, wanna replace this thing
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b4aTQctjEm8&feature=youtu.be
there's the dog playing in the yard..it seems to be a noise that only occurs when clipping happens....but it takes little to NOTHING to clip the audio..i bet it's a noise cancellation issue
Well, if it is hardware then it is good because it isn't wide spread.

Do me a favor, play some loud music on a stereo and see if it does the same thing, that way I can try to re-create your problem on my end with the same method.
I just did a test of this, and mine makes audible clicking sounds whenever the camera is refocusing. You can test it on your device by getting a contrasting shot (use mine as an example) and then tapping the screen between the two points to make it refocus on the point you select.
http://youtu.be/gjmqDC9MLYc
sometimes when it refocuses, it doesn't make a noise at all (ideal). So maybe it's some software params making the lense try and adjust further than it can, or it might just be a camera problem..
eitherway, i don't take videos very often, so won't worry me too much.
That sign in the back gave me my laugh for the day!
that sign rocks hahahaha
but those aren't the same clicks i'm getting. i shall test with loud music playing and by pressing to auto focus...
CAN WE turn off auto focus on video? i know we can on pics, but howbout vidoe?

notice at 1:01 when i goto the subwoofer you can hear the squink noise destinctly..i wonder if low freqs are what make it squink?

Those clicks when the video starts while it's trying to focus on your laptop screen are the same as mine too.
I can't help but think the pop I hear at 1:01 is the exact same sound too...
Best test for the audio would be to lay the camera face down or something and hit record, and see what it gets.
Edit: on second thought, I think i'm hearing both types of clicks.
I wonder if the regular voice recorder has this problem too?
Edit2: sure does... i have a steady pattern of clicks on my voice recordings when recording my piano. they're like every ~2.5 seconds... and very predictable. especially on some of the youtube links posted earlier..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1451ZVudgOM&feature=related
Maybe it's just a codec problem?
When i record as AAC_LC in the voice recorder I hear the digital blips.... not so much with AMR, but it's a less quality codec I think.
Edit 3: OP you should change the title of the thread so other forum members drill into it, i'm sure there's someone who knows what might be going on better than I do.
But from my vantage it sounds like a codec error. Hopefully resolved by an HTC update, or a future fix when we get perm root.
The video clicks during focusing I've researched a bit, and it may be related to how the software handles the camera functions, and could also be resolved with some updates... fingers crossed.
nice, good call. updated the title!
I have been unable to really root out the issue here with the camera lense making that noise as it tries to refocus... I'm assuming it's software controllable so some parameter in there somewhere would fix it. Guess we'll have to wait for root and a custom Rom!
anyway, I've tried some different camera apps, messing with the autofocus to see if it makes a difference, and they still all seem to make the auto-focus noise. I haven't found any market apps that do video recording however. Does anyone know of any?
I'll dig in the SDK a bit, but I bet the autofocus fuction is part of the ROM and not the software using the camera. In which case, different software won't make a difference. Just sounds like the lense is over-reacting while recording a video, causing the clicks in the video recording.
As for the blips, I'm definitely convinced it's a codec issue, since it also happens in the voice recorder which (I'm assuming) might be use the same codec as the built in video recorder app for the audio.
Case still open for now...
man, i'm having a hard time finding an app that does video, too. i downloaded the MIUI camera APK i found on here somewhere, but the video recording was like 1fps lol it was terrible, so i didn't even bother.

[Q] Audio volume while video recording

Hey.
Yesterday i was on this 'We love the 90's' live arrangement where Scooter, Culture Beat, Haddaway, Captain Jack, Dr Bombay and Daze was doing a live arrangement here i live in Ålesund.
Now, the video recording was in good quality for the most part, so i have nothing to say about that.
But what my question is, is if it's possible to lower the input volume of the microphone(s) on the Galaxy S II?
I'm using Android 4.0.3 though. Or i'm using SensatioN ROM v3.4, but it's a Samsung ROM anyways.
When the sound / noise gets a little high, the sound starts to cracks quite alot. And that will ofc make it bad to record a live arrangement.
I know we can change / edit the values to the bitrate on the recorded movies and the audio quality to in the 'media_profiles.xml' file that are under System/etc.
Shouldn't it be possible to reduce the input volume to the microphone to then?
Or isn't it any ways of doing this?
I also hope that i posted this on the right place.
Greetings from Tom-Helge.
EDIT: I was using LgCameraPro to record the movies and was setting it to record in mono because the sound would crack WAAAAY more if i had been recording the sound in Stereo.
EDIT 2: I'm uploading a little clip from the live arrangement to let you see what i'm talking about.
It's done in about 20 minutes.
EDIT 3: Here is the little video clip.
Bump before i'm off to work.
Anyone have any idea about this?
I had the same problem too ^^
same problem here, but it seems a known issue of s2
Still no ideas on this problem?
Think i have to give this topic a little bump again.

[Q] Microphone gain

Is there any way to change the microphone gain for recording videos? For example, I find the gain is way too high for recording concerts, all I get is hissing distorted audio. I was an an Aerosmith concert the other day and the audio quality is that bad that all you can hear is noise, no music at all.
I have rooted my phone and have xposed framework installed but I didnt see any apps or anything on there for this to happen.
I used to have a Motorola Atrix a few years ago and it had a recording option for concerts, which lowered the gain and made it excellent quality for videos.
Any ideas would be helpful, cheers!
Flash doom kernel. It will give you the ability to change the gain

I agree, I recorded some video at a concert last weekend and it's all broken up and distorted. Such a shame since the video quality is so great. I would think firmware/software could fix this. I don't want to have to buy the external mic just to get a quality recording.

The answer would seem to be an external STM10 mic.
Funnily enough, at an Aerosmith concert too:

Microphone or sound record issue

Hello, I own a remi3s but I want to expand the question to other remi3 user. could anybody help me to test the record feature of the redmi 3s because I notice an issue. If I record in several Apps a sound like a long permanently humm sound, the sound record perfectly for the first couple of seconds (2sec) and after that the sound level lowers down. Even if I use the field recorder app or the in build Miui Audio recorder I notice that the led indicator of the Audio signal lowers. And than the record is very bumpy during a permanently sound like hum or somthing else. Only if I talk the record is very clear and nearly perfect.
Whats this strange level lowering of the recird signal during hum souns.
By the way I need surch records, because I am an audio engineer.
please could anybody test it on miui or cm based roms
Thanks

Internal audio record gone after update to emui 9.1...

Hi guys.
My JSN-L22 received an update tonight. I'm now on emui 9.1.0.217
I went to record a game this morning and the internal audio record option is gone.
The tick that used to be there to click it is nowhere to be seen, there's only the mic icon.
If mic is on it records mic, if it's off it's completely muted.
I've recorded internal audio around the 29th of July so it definitely was this update...
WTF I'm pretty livid tbh. I loved that inbuilt feature!
But I don't see any news about it on the internet, so I wonder if it's only me?
Please tell me of some 3d party app that will let me do this again :/ Does Mobizen internal sound record even work on the 8x? :crying: Goes without saying I don't have root >_>
Internal audio record is not gone
It's not gone actually. You just have to make sure that the mic icon on the upper left hand side of the screen is turned off. The system should automatically record the game sound.
In fact, This update allow us to listen to the game sound while recording it. While in the previous versions, the game sound is muted when you're recording.
