2 quick questions relating Xperifirm, flashtool - Sony Xperia X Questions & Answers

I am using Xperia X dual sim.
Was not getting any option to turn on volte.
After some research I found that I am on Malaysia firmware (34.3.A.0.238 / R3D - Customized MY)
What I need is 34.3.A.0.238 / R6D - Customized IN
So I am downloading it from Xperifirm now.
The questions I have
1. Do I need to unlock bootloader before installing this using flashtool?
2. Will I continue to get official and automatic India updates after this?
And is there is anything else I need to know before I do this?
Thanks.

If I remember correctly you don't need unlocked bootloader. And yes you will get official updates if you don't root your phone.

[Q] how to update xperia neo with 2.3.4 from other countries

Hi,
I bought xperia neo having 2.3.3 from UK. I am now in India and would like to update my phone with 2.3.4 to avail new features.
Since I am new to android mobile, and my pcc doesn't show the update for 2.3.4 from India, I would like to know any alternate steps to update my phone with 2.3.4
I am not aware of what is flashing etc..
Could anybody please help me in providing step by step procedure to do so.
This will be a great help for people like me.
Thanks & Regards,
sridhar.
You should be able to just flash a .ftf file (look at the development section) with a application called flashtool.
This should also be helpful.
Here's the .ftf and other instructions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1269724
Hello,
You can aso use WotanServer to simply flash the latest 2.3.4 firmware
Update via wotanserver or via flashtool....BUT NOT via OTA(over the air) ....i recommend that

The only 2.3.4 firmware is a Nordic one ( that i could see ).
Do we use that one?
chill............
Yes, no problems, you can easily flash for example a french firmware in a chinese phone, there is no danger
The firmwares are different only with the integrated apps, and some little functions also change.
I am currently not rooted, so does this affect doing the update?
Also would I be able to do the Official UK update when that becomes available if I needed too?
thanks

No problems if the phone's not rooted. And you're right for the UK firmware. You just have to wait that it will be availlable with WotanClient.
Just an advice : when you'll have the 2.3.4 version installed, don't downgrade to a 2.3.2 version if you want to root it (otherwise the phone will have a serious battery issue)!
To root the phone just use the rootxperia.zip method with an unlocked bootloader
You won't be able to use rootxperia without first unlocking your bootloader, you can get alejandrissimo to help you with this I got a neo that has 2.3.4, rooted and unlocked bootloader now and am happy with it but yes with the downgrade, don't do it or your battery will have problems (0%) and there is no fix (yet) [email protected] <- can help you out with the unlocking of the bootloader.

That unfortunately doesn't work for carrier branded devices, even if they are desimlocked
Then alejandrissimo could help people unlocking the bootloader
I've unlocked the bootloader on carrier based SE phones using the SE site... it's the SIM lock that is the problem. Branded phones that have been SIM unlocked are OK.
The reason I could not use Sony's method is it didn't work for my phone which I got carrier locked. That's why I went the alternative method. and prob why other people have to do the same.

[Q] Rooting And Unlocking Bootloader Vs. Rooting Only

If I Unlock The Bootloader Will I Get The ICS Update This April ? Or I Still Get It If I Dont Unlock It. *Im Not A Professional Rooter*
Xperias with unlocked bootloaders won't get official updates.
#correct if im wrong!
you will get the update. just install it with pc companion. if that wont work, youll get the flashable files in dev section.
don't worry someone will make ftf file and you can also update via wotanserver.
If you unlock the bootloader, then there's a risk your phone will be bricked when you update firmware over the air using seus or pccompanion. You should update it offline using flashtool and ftf firmware file.
If you unlock it and use a custom rom, then I don't think you would get official update notification anyway.
If you're not planning to use custom kernel or custom rom, then I suggest you only need to root it .

There's a big risk on unlocking the bootloader because we wont be able to receive official updates or even void our warranty with our manufacturers. Make sure that you know the advantages and disadvantages of unlocking the bootloader before proceeding.

Are you going to create topic for every single market firmware release around the globe? It is getting a little crowdy here, why not split it into 2: root and non-root firmwares?

Sounds like a good idea, I do agree that it gets crowded and the real good stuff coming out (CM9) are being pushed down the drain.
hmm, in HTCMania i have a thread with all Firmware + ROOT listed, maybe a someone can do that here
procedures ? flash pre-root img then firmware ?
does the unrooted version has the blue battery percent mod and quickpanel?
if not, is it possible to make ftf file with these mods without rooting, as I can't root my device because the bootloader is not unlockable
i have unlocked bootloader and rooted
but i cannot get update from sony,
how can i rooted the LT26i with online update enable ?
can i flash rooted firmware and then relocked the machine
and go for online update to 73 with root still in the machine ?
srsly, do you read the guides? its in RED and HUGE! IF YOU UNLOCK BOOTLAODER YOU CANT UPDATE VIA OTA - PCC - SEUS
I know....,
so, what I'm planning to do is to unlock bootloader and root it
then relock bootloader again and go for OTA update.....
but the problem is will root remain when I update or relock bootloader again ?

Either way, rooted or not, you can always relock the bootloader. Once locked, you may proceed with any official firmware update using SEUS (not pc companion, as you can't download 73 firmware with it at the moment).

OTA update to 6.1.A.2.45 for rooted Xperia S with unlocked bootloader

I have a rooted Xperia S with unlocked bootloader, by following instructions on this thread.
Today I received a notification about OTA update to 6.1.A.2.45 (40MB in size) and I was wondering if I can apply this update without loosing root. I really did search for an answer on the forum before making this post and couldn't find anything specific for my phone, but what I did found only confused me more, which is to be expected since I am a noob. Apparently it worked for some users of Xperia Play with unlocked bootloader, but on the other hand some users of Xperia Arc S say that bootloader should be locked when making an OTA update.
I would really appreciate any help from more experienced members, I'm new in Android and don't want to start by bricking my phone.
Thank you for your time and effort.
Boom
better dont, you will end up with a bricked device. NEVER accept OTA updates if your bootloader is unlocked.
Don't update with PCC when you're unlocked.
Wow, that was fast! Thank you guys.
hi, did you find how to update?

i also have an open bootloader although not root, but i tried updating using the phone's OTA and PCC and neither worked. I promptly realized it might just be the open bootloader which is keeping me from updating, so how do we manually update? if you have any procedures will highly appreciate anyone..... thanks in advance

You can find your regions FW. (firmware) and download it, after that download and install flashtool, and flash the .ftf file via flashtool and that is it.
thanks for the quick reply

i did a fast search and found this thread

they have some firmwares there, but they seem to be full updates, because they are 300+mb while the update on my phone its only 40mb.
so should i just download the generic and proceed to flash?

Hmmm,
Slightly different scenario here.
I have a rooted xperia S with a locked bootloader and obviously want to preserve root.
Previous experience tells me that a PC update from SEUS does a full wipe of the phone and looses root however OTA updates usually preserve root. I was hoping somebody could clarify if this is still the case?
Thanks
if your bootloaders unlocked you cant update ota or via seus. it will just give an error about your device being modified

there is a rom somewhere in another forum i guess which already is updated and rooted. so you might want to just download that one and flash it. it has its own kernel and recovery.

I've not been on much recently at all so I could be wrong, but I'm sure it's been said that you can flash ROM such as the linked one when bootloader is locked and perhaps the pre-rooted one too. May need to search the thread.
Nothing out there that allows me to root my Xperia S on ICS without wiping my data though I think. One can wait... or dream. :[

Yeah having too wipe at this point is a bummer. If I'm going to wipe my phone ill wait for the ability to unlock my locked bootloader.
Problem with that is I will most likely have a new phone by then.

Flashing 5.0 FTF on locked BL and network LOCKED

Hello guys i have big troubles with my sony M4. I wanted to root the phone buy of course first i have to unlock the bootloader because it is on 6.0. But then i got Bootloader Unlock allowed: NO. So i tought if i change the firmware using flashtool to 5.0 i can root it using some of the premade rootkits for 5.0 and M4 but i have another problem. The phone is locked by T-mobile and they won't unlock it unless 2 years pass which is for 6 months from now, so if i install another firmware like the commercial 5.0 i think the network will not work right ? So guys do you have any other ideas how can i unlock the bootloader if the status is NO and also keep it locked within the network ? Thanks in advance.
