Not directly but there's an app called galaxy button lights 2 that allows you to do that. It seems to work well.

An App to turn off softkey backlight?

Anyone know of an app or mod that allows you to turn off the softkey backlight when you want? I read on my Vibrant at night & those extra bright softkey lights are hard on my eyes.
does not exist for any GALAXY S.

Really? I had Captivate with i9000 reoriented kernel and those softkeys were lighting only when pressed. So if you tap screen, softkeys do not light - perfect for night reading. Solution that I see - to find a i9000 reoriented kernel for vibrant.
I know there is one called "BLN" (Back light notification I think), the paid version lets you schedule when the lights turn on and off. I have mine scheduled to turn on at five in the morning and off at seven at night. But I think it's just for notifications and not turning them off completely.

Unfortunately BLN doesn't turn off lights completely. But we can ask developer to add such feature .
Anyway there should be some sort of hack for kernel to turn off those keys.

This is correct I know of no Galaxy phone that can do this either Sorry
This is disappointing. I know it can be done. Because there are plenty of members here that have turned off their BLN keys on accident by using SGS tools, and messing around with it.
So I know the script is there. Just, nobody has done it yet.
Dev,s anybody???
Come on- Let's do this.
Thanks
Bump. I would like this for the Samsung Fascinate. Anyone?
Have you try 'Keep the lights on' in market by Guardian Bob? When toggle Off, the lights stayed off when you tap the screen. Atleast it is for me, I'm on Bi-Winning rom.

It's not the app, it's the ROM. And they come back when you tap the keys directly. I think all 2.2.1 ROMs do this.
Same issue
The key lights really bother my eyes at night....has anyone figured out a solution to this problem yet......please help thanks

Main menu button: wake and notifications?

As a N1 user what I loved more than many other devices is that it has trackball wake and notifications colors for missed calls and sms (though thanks to Mod), do you think the main button under the screen of the SGS2 can do the same?

Probably not. I think the main home button is like in the SGS. For SGS developers made a mod called BLN which uses the capacitive buttons on the sides of the main home button for notifications.
Who knows, guess we will have to wait and see what the great Devs can accomplish.
I think remaping the home button will be easy for XDA devs but use its light for notifications...will take another couple of hours to implement it
Would be nice to be able to see notifications. Although I am not to concerned, I am coming from a iPhone which doesn't have any methods of notifications aside from sound.

...yes it shouldn't take more than couple of hours from xda-devs to get the light out of black piece of plastic....
The homebutton of SGSII already works the same way as trackballwake on N1, no need for development on that one.

The SGS's solution is probably the way to go. Light up the capacitive buttons with a custom kernel.
But I think I read somewhere that the SGS2 does that out of the box.

"And if they glowed in the precursor together with the backlit screen, but now the user can customize their work, there are several options."
It can mean anything, and who knows what google did with the translation. Sorry
They need the back lights to 'fade' in & out or 'pulse'. This gives such a high quality look to a device.

Here is human translation:
And while in the previous model they [buttons] lit up only with the screen backlight, now the user can define how and when the buttons light up from a number of available settings.

[Q] Make buttons stay on with backlight

Is there a way to have the 3 hardware "buttons" stay on anytime the backlight is on? I switch between devices often and it can be a pain to remember which button is which at night.

This seems to allow a full range of screen brightness adjustment but doesn't seem to offer any option to keep the buttons turned on when the screen is on.

I am on streakdroid 1.9 and when i have that option checked + setting the brightness in that app, the buttons do stay on for me
Anyone else have an idea? I flashed streakdroid 1.9 just to see if the above suggestion worked. Still no go.

Quit quibbling about that... what is a forum for?
I run a Corvette forum and don't jump someone for asking the same questions, especially new members. After awhile the new members figure out how to search...

Still no go. Used both the brightness and the timeout set buttons. Button backlight only stays on for about 5 seconds.
same here.....
At first I didn't like the light not staying on either, however after about a week, it was pretty easy to remember which the 3 buttons are and where... even in the dark. Now I don't mind at all.
Tip... touch lightly anywhere on that side and it lights up.

It works on latest ironrom
Probably only works on ROMs that support the fingerprint reader.
I think that app only works on Touchwiz roms. I use it on my Tab S and S6, both on Touchwiz.
2 features of this app (may require pro version?):
Long touch can do one of the following: camera, screen-off, Google Now, or home screen
When lock screen shown (before you input password/pattern/swipe to unlock), touch home button to turn off screen. Useful when you turn on screen to look at time only and want to turn off screen without pressing power button (reduce button use?) or letting screen timeout (save battery?)
The developer also has an app to double-knock/tap to turn screen on-or-off. I use it to turn-off the screen with a double-tap. Using it to turn-on screen consumes battery.

This is super helpful, thank you for going through this. I got it setup but still having some issues - the notch light is always on haha. going to have to tweak this some more.
Hey all,
Check out the app LED Blinker Pro, there is an option to have a blinking light on the screen. Looks exactly like previous samsung phones, and you can also have multiple lights for different notifications. Problem solved!

Did you try it and does it work?
Just to know if the API that supports it is there.
It seems the downsides of all the led apps is that once you get the notification you can't unlock the phone with the fingerprint sensor, you have to double tap the screen or something to cancel the app and then unlock the phone.
Working pretty well for me this far. I added this app on my gf's and my S10 Plus's. Besides going through the bevy options we have it setup. The light only goes around the camera when a notification comes in. Still doing some tsing so I'll update if anything.

There is an option though that you can select that if you pickup your phone, it goes right to the lock screen so you don't have to dismiss the led screen.
nice app but it's a killing battery

I noticed that, but then beside it it said it uses more power. I switched to aod instead, if only you could get rid of the clock and date and simply have notifications on it.
