Verizon sells the V30+? If they do, it won't be bootloader eligible if the T-Mobile one isn't.

if it is a carrier branded lg phone, it will not be put on the bootloader unlock list. you want the US998U (not out anywhere, but there is a page on the lg website) if you want one that can be bootloader unlocked.

Did you purchase the phone from at&t, and have you had it longer than a year? You can ask them to unlock the device.
If not, I'll see if there's an unlock method available.
At&t requires you to register the imei for your device on their website. There are also 3rd party options to unlock the g2 with the cheapest being $1.70 per unlock.

B&H Unlocked G5 vs Tmobile G5?

(I would use Unlocked version on Tmobile) No bloat with Unlocked version and T mobile folks said tether will work fine etc. i.e. Tmobile software not needed. Looking for suggestions for either phone. Thx in advance.
the b&h version doesnt come out until may 11th just fyi.

B&H site now says May 1st. I called LG but was unable to get any scoop.
It would be great to get feedback from the forum on whether it would make sense to wait for the unlocked version or just get the T mobile verison now.
Thx
The RS988 would work just fine on T-Mobile. It will most likely receive less updates than the T-Mobile variant. For example the US991 Unbranded G4 that B&H sells still doesn't have Marshmallow. I'd assume the trend to continue.
RS988 comes SIM unlocked out of the box.. while the T-Mobile version does not but depending on if you buy it outright or are in good standing sometimes T-Mobile will unlock the SIM.
Bootloader on the RS988 will be locked. I'd expect T-Mobiles version to have a better shot at bootloader unlock... but maybe not. RS988 certainly has no edge over the T-Mobile version here tho. Both are locked at the moment. T-Mobil's may eventually get unlocked officially from T-Mobil update in the future... RS988 has no shot at that and it will take a bootloader exploit to unlock.
You can't really lose either way in my opinion... though you get more free perks with the T-Mobile version. Free 360 camera for those who buy tmo model until April 5th (tomorrow).. on top of the battery.

I can't say this is reliable yet as B&H model isn't actually available yet but I emailed them last week about this , tech support guy named Adam emailed back this week saying the bootloader is unlocked, I emailed back asking if he knew the difference between sims unlocked and bootloader unlocked, he said yes and confirmed bootloader also unlocked- I am a skeptic until I see it but, imho I do think it would give them an edge in sales and they have no vested interest in the carriers so I'm waiting to see (I also want it now but...) I also wonder if software will have less bloat. I'm thinking that all US models will all be locked but LG will give the unlock codes out for international models as they are claiming to be friendly to developers, and B&H has a good chance to be in that same boat. Still have hope for this
Only one bloat app on tmobile are T mobile acct app....evrythig else you can delete
Sent from my LG-H830 using XDA-Developers mobile app
Another thing that has me scratching my head, is how come they're the only ones that are selling this model?
I tried looking elsewhere online and don't see any major retailer selling it.
B&H model thoughts
I am still waiting to see what B&H model looks like (mostly because the money is short this month) but after reading more on this thread, I am leaning more towards the T-Mobile version, mainly because I would probably get better product support should the phone have problems in the beginning, also willing to wait for unlock when/if it comes. mail orders are risky and no one knows what this variant will be like until they get one and then they would probably have to deal with LG for problems after 30 days - while B&H doesn't have a vested interest in carriers, they also don't have an interest in getting the bootloader unlocked (if locked, and this sounds likely despite what I was told).
T-Mobile also has EVS out of the box
Another reason to consider the T-Mobile version is it has Enhanced Voice Services (EVS) enabled out of the box where as the unlocked version may never get it. Might not be a big deal but if your on T-Mobile already, why not go with it.

update on B&H vs T-Mobile version bands
I just found a post here at xda forums about the variant lg g5 models - what I've been waiting for to make a decision on T-Mobile vs B&H choice. this may or may not matter to everyone. I notice a slight difference in the bands among variants, might be important to allow full range of carriers before deciding. I would look at this link to see if the missing bands are important (T-Mobile is not very good in my area so having more available bands in the B&H model would be important to me if these stats are accurate.

No solution for unlocking ?
No there is no known method other than using the app. You may be able to purchase an unlock and seller would submit your imei for processing on Tmobile server I would assume.

Yeah I mean usually those services are pretty cheap like 30 or lower to remote unlock the phone. Worth a shot just look for reviews of those sites first too.

Is the US Cellular (US998) sim unlocked?

I'm so tired of LG putting the same damn code name for different reasons. So I'll just ask here. I know the v30+ from B&O is the US998. But US Cellular also has their own US998. My question is, Is the US Cellular one already unlocked or do I have to pay for the unlock? Also, is the bootloader unlockable? I've seen the US998 unlock and root thread but does that work on the US Cellular one? I remember the whole G5 debacle where LG gave the same code name to 2 different carriers and one was unlockable and the other was not. Thanks in advance, this is just very frustrating for me. I love LG but sometimes....
The US Cellular one is SIM-locked as I recall, and like any carrier phone would need to be paid off and an unlock requested. The bootloader is not unlockable officially and no exploit has been found to do so, though people are looking into it.
The Open Market US998 should be SIM unlocked from the start, and the bootloader can be unlocked on the LG dev site (though last I heard, you need to temporarily edit the page to add the phone model to the drop-down list).
So yea, exact same model number idiocy as before.
The US998+ is not yet bootloader-unlockable, it's currently in the same boat as the USC US998. If you want bootloader unlock for sure, grab yourself the normal Open Market V30. Spend the extra money you would have given LG and get a big SD card and decent case, instead.
No, the U.S. Cellular V30/V30+ is not sim-card locked/carrier locked/network locked. It's the "unofficial" carrier unlocked model. It's identical to the open market US998 in every respect except not eligible for bootloader unlock. (Well, neither is the open market V30+ at this point in time.)
Many people in this forum have bought the U.S. Cellular US998 and are not on U.S. Cellular. No unlock codes needed. See this thread, and search for "Cellular". I've posted about it since October...

But unless you were getting a fantastic deal on an U.S. Cellular model and you didn't care about bootloader unlock at all (even in the future), the best bet is the open market US998 V30.

Is this a genuine LG V30 (H931) AT&T phone?

I bought an LG V30 on Ebay. It is suppose to be from at&t. I put an at&t sim card and received an ota update but it failed to install. I tried several times with the same result. I'm wondering if the phone is a real at&t phone.

No, it's not.
The B&O logo on the back gives it away. LG is not allowed to distribute B&O branded phones in North America, as another company has those rights.
AT&T H931 V30 is 64GB and has silver back that says 'V30" and "LG".
B&O branded phones were sold in Europe and Asia.
Go to IMEI online database like SWAPPA and check your IMEI, to see where it originated.

I didn't say or wasn't an LG V30 phone. I said it wasn't an AT&T H931. Nor any V30 sold in North America -- since it has B&O logo. That was your question, "Is this a genuine AT&T H931?"
NO. It is not. Some Octoplus dealer has probably flashed AT&T firmware over it and since it may or may not have have native AT&T IMEI it's not going to successfully update.
What SPECIFIC MODEL VARIANT does the IMEI database say?
* Maybe EU H930?
* Maybe some Korean carrier variant?
If SWAPPA doesn't say, then Google some other IMEI database...
No disrespect, but I'm not even going to look at that link you posted. I already know which regions LG is allowed to use the B&O logo and where they are not, and why. I know more about this phone series than any website writer.

You've obviously bought some refurbished phone where they have European or Asia B&O back cover. No LG AT&T phone came with that logo and never will.
Additionally they may have flashed AT&T firmware over it. Maybe they used AT&T IMEI.
I don't know all the extent it's not genuine -- the back cover is enough proof.
Someone else last year bought an "AT&T H931" which would not update from some eBay dealer. When he told the dealer it didn't seem genuine, as it wouldn't update, the dealer didn't even try to argue. They offered full refund.
Here's your choices: you can return the phone or you can flash it to North American LG carrier unlocked firmware and update it yourself. It can run on AT&T but won't have AT&T VoLTE, etc.
If you need/want genuine AT&T H931 with updated firmware, you need to return it and see if they have an actual AT&T H931 they can send you.

Real AT&T H931:
If you have no intention of bootloader unlock and root, you can go to Pie.
If you bootloader unlock, you have to TEMPORARILY downgrade to early Oreo. Then update back to most recent firmware, which for XDA H931 users is only last Oreo. AT&T only updates OTA for customers and only on pure stock. We have last AT&T Oreo made by devs but not AT&T Pie. We do have other Pie stock ROMs made by devs for other carriers and for carrier unlocked.
OTHER:
If you use North American carrier unlocked firmware, in my opinion there's really no advantage to Pie at this point in time. I'm still on last Oreo, which is rock stable. But I'm running rooted stock US998 firmware on AT&T. I don't have VoLTE or Wi-Fi calling, because it's not a branded AT&T phone.
Conclusion:
Do NOT stay on early Oreo firmware. Too many fixes and additional features on latter Oreo updates.

From my experience, I believe this phone is opened and have different parts assembled from different carriers. For example, It's board might be genuine At&t and back cover is changed to international B&O. It is also possible that screen might be from any korean variant. This happens to old phones and no one can guarantee you the genuity.

Interesting. While it IS possible the previous owner swapped out the back cover (you can buy them on eBay), not many have done that...
You can buy a V30+ back cover for your 64GB V30 to fool people.
You can even buy a black AT&T back cover!
It just seems very strange the OTA update doesn't work. It leads me to believe something has been done to it or it's not genuine. But maybe it is and the previous owner just "customized" it.

Yes. The last AT&T Oreo stock ROM (TWRP-flashable zip) does have AT&T VoLTE and Wi-Fi calling for AT&T customers. BUT, AT&T has to be convinced it's an AT&T H931 phone for those features to work. Has to be enabled on their end. I have a rooted US998 phone with AT&T SIM and I do not have those features. Even if I flashed the AT&T dev-made H931 Oreo ROM to "convert" it to H931, AT&T would still look at the IMEI and the Device ID and not enable those features.
If your phone can pass the AT&T sniff test, then you could bootloader unlock and root, then flash back to this firmware below and have rooted stock AT&T Oreo firmware:
LG V30 AT&T H931 Rom
https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-v30/development/lg-v30-att-h931-20f-rom-t3872926
The dev was not able to make an AT&T Pie stock ROM as there were too many changes in Pie. He had to UNroot his phone, take the OTA, then merge it with a base framework and create a KDZ. Both AT&T and Sprint refuse to publicly release full image KDZ of their carrier firmware. They only let customers have partial image OTA updates.
As a result, many people who have bought AT&T H931 in other countries (where there is no AT&T) convert their phone to open market US998 or even carrier unlocked Canada H931 firmware. (It's called Frankenstein.) Then they can manually update their phones themselves, when new KDZ are released for those variants. We post those KDZ here in this forum.
You really only want AT&T firmware if you are an AT&T customer. I am an AT&T customer and I still don't want AT&T firmware. I prefer the Open Market US998 rooted Oreo, but that's my personal opinion.
