For those of you who got a Note after having a Skyrocket or the SGS2, what are your general impressions?
I just got my Note yesterday, so the jury's still out for me. But so far, I love the size and clarity of the display. The S Pen is a pretty cool toy. However, the black crush issue is making me consider going back to the skyrocket.
What are the pros and cons for you?
Kinda off topic, but does your skyrocket not have the black crush issue? I exchanged my note for another one because of pen accuracy issues, and my new one shows the black crush really badly. The ATT rep said all of the Samsung phones have the black issue, including the skyrocket. My captivate never had the issue. Now that I experience the black issue, I don't know if I want to keep the note.
Edit: Just saw your post in the black crush thread and see that you mentioned that it isn't present on the skyrocket. That might be my new phone if I can't find a fix for this.
I have had 8 skyrockets...and my wife still has one...
The skyrocket has the black crush as well but it is less noticeable because of the smaller screen and lower resolution.
I would go back to the skyrocket if there were not so many units with screen lines and blobs

Sigh...I guess my solution is to keep the Note and hope that Samsung addresses this issue. My temporary fix is to adjust settings in a screen adjuster app so the black issue is less noticeable.
I simply started using higher res stuff and its 90% fixed

Yea its weird the other day i tried that Youtube video "Moving Star field 720p" or whatever and it was horrible pixelation & such. I went to show my GF today and it was 100 times better lol, figures. But i do still see it on some things though. But i figured most devices do have this.
But most of these "new screens" are without a downfall but have many positives over negatives. For example my PS Vita has a beautiful OLED screen. But being its early OLED technology on loading screens you can see what looks like black blobs of paint if you are in a dark room. It is only seen when the pixels are off and only the backlight is on. During some loading screens you will see this. Never will you see any of it during game play. But i guess the Note is more noticeable being it happens in video playback and such.
I had the verizon galaxy nexus....then the tmobile galaxy s2 which has basically the same processer in my new note.....I have to say the more I play with the note the more I like it....my s2 was screaming fast...though we had more developers in that community ....this note is fast but hasn't reached it full potential by any means..we only have a few devs here, plus its so new...give it time this device will be incredible mark my words..

If I just wanted to play YouTube videos, I could use my browser and that would fix the problem. But I can't even use a wallpaper with dark blacks or it will show that crush all day. It also does it with pictures I take using the camera.
If my Skyrocket has any black crush, it is infinitely better than the Note.
How many of you have helped me report this rather serious graphics issue to Samsung, or the tech blogs like Engadget and Android Police?
Please point all of them to my thread on the subject -- we really need to draw attention to the problem, or they'll never fix it.
Well I owned the Note for 7 days and now I traded it in and got the S2. Here are my thoughts so far.
NOTE - Big BEAUTIFUL screen is great for browsing and gaming. Battery life wasn't great (I thought it would be soon much better). LTE was nice when I had it. One handed operation was something that wasn't enjoyable. Touchwiz lagged a little but not intolerable. Spen was really good.
S2 - Faster stock, not benchmarks but pure going into menus and such. More games are compatible with the S2 then the Note (not even close). Battery life is about 20-30% better with the same use. I was getting 2 hours of screen on Note vs 3 so far on the S2. Perfect size for 1 handed operation. Screen just isn't as clear or bright.
In the end, I am missing the Note. I just refuse to pay top dollar for something that is going to take months to have applications modified for it. Man that screen on the Note is GOREGEOUS!!

Top dollar? I paid the same for both $150. I actually do notice that the sgs2 does seem faster at times but omg is it tiny. I use my sgs2 for runnin and the Gnote for everything else.
What res wallpapers?
All i am saying is i have seen the issue on both...but i also lined up 5 skyrockets and there was an insane difference from screen to screen

Your lucky. For me it was $300 for the Note or $100 for the S2. Note for $150 i would have kept it!

I came over to the Note from the GT-i9100. I'm glad that I did. The extra real estate on the screen is a huge bonus for me.
The SPen seemed gimmicky at first, but that is because the first Note that I purchased apparently had a defect. It often didn't register touches on the screen and I was disappointed. That and the light bleed on the buttons (it was the white version) made me take it to AT&T for a swap to the black one. The fact that this ones pen works perfectly has cemented my decision to keep the phone.
I don't have any lag on mine. It is just like my SGS2 was with a crisper screen.
The only thing that I really miss is the physical home button, but I imagine I will get used to it.
My Galaxy s6 edge has a weird display issue. Whenever I watch a video that involves a night time scene or a very dark scene there are blotches of black. It makes the video look 8 bit or like watercolor. its especially noticeable when I watch it in a dark room at night with no lights on. There's weird distortion effect. i was wondering if I have a defective display or not.
What is the source
There's a YouTube video titled The Dark Knight The Joker's Last Scene (HD). I can really see the problem in that video. Sorry I can't just link it, since I'm a new member and can't post link. Skip to 2:20 minute mark.
try youtube other hd videos and see.
I've noticed the same issue. Albeit not as consistently. Has happened to me with a couple of videos, where I'd got black blotches with dark/night scenes. Again, it hasn't been consistent. Cannot figure out why. Checked the same scenes on my laptop, and there weren't any problems whatsoever.
This is a common aspect of AMOLED screens to have ink type blotches. Search the older Note 1 2 & 3 forums and even S3 for that matter. These were very common and its not an issue unless you are being over sensitive about it. I think the display curve is to be blamed right now for not being able to reduce this issue to the bare minimum in phones like Note 4 and even the normal S6. But hey, again its not an issue and we should be able to live with it.

Their reply made me mad. According to them the blotched display is actually a "feature" of my phone. They wouldn't even address this issue as many phones are suffering from it.

Hi All,
I've preordered M10Pro, expecting delivery middle of this months but am still wondering if I've made a right decision. I have never used a phone with amoled as my daily driver. I drive a car quite a bit, using google maps for around 1h daily plus every 1-2 weeks for at least 5-6 hours a single day. Additionally I am pretty used to now using AOD (LG G6), it's not clear if AOD on M10Pro is changing its position in order to prevent burn in so these to plus navigation bar drives my crazy when I think I could spend considerable amount of money on a phone which will get burn in after a few months.
Unfortunately regular M10 won't be available on my market and I do not want to order outside as I am used to having my devices covered by 24 months guarantee.
What are your experiences with amoled? What are you feeling when it comes to burn-in and M10Pro? Should I be even bothered?
Thanks

i choose the Mate 10 6+128GB!
I know that for some of you there may be an option to choose between 10 and 10pro but for me, when I want to have a full guarantee locally options are -to buy 10 pro with amoled or to buy from competition which does not have amoled, so basically htc, which to me is not a real alternative
As per android central review on YouTube out today, after "several weeks" of usage he had no burn in issue for the Mate10 pro.

Will watch it straight away. Hope it clears all my doubts.
It will burn in eventually. It's a reality with AMOLED. May be sooner, may be later, as each screen is different but it will happen. This is why I really try to avoid AMOLED. I prefer peace of mind over a more saturated screen.
Not to mention I've never heard of the company supplying Huawei with their AMOLED screens. If I have to get one, it'd probably be a Samsung.
Not sure why LCD has so much hate. It's perfect on my Mate 10 and with HDR videos it's stunning. No worries about burn in too.

I have seen the AOD on the Mate 10 pro in different locations, so i understand it will be moving about.
And navigation is not static, so maybe it won't be an issue ?
Everyone is going oled whether its LG, Apple, Pixel 2 and OnePlus. And there is that BOE manufacturer ready to bring out their oled as well and so will be seeing oleds even more. Apple and others know that oled is prone to burn in and yet saw it as fit to use on their important iphone x, which means the probability is low and depends on a certain harsh usage.
If Huawei covers warranty for a burn in it would be reassuring though. Personally, i don't use my phone in max brightness and prolonged periods with a static image. And i use the auto brightness most of the time. I haven't had a problem with my oled on the P9 plus after 1.5 years of usage.
Every big player will get Amoleds to their phone....
Why? Because of money and bussiness....
Why to make a perfect phone that will last for 3 years without a problem.
They need more to sell...... I would buy a mate 10 pro if there would be a ips display.... oled no....
I had a lcd once, on a sony : I hated it. I always had oled screens, and never had any burn-in problem (I keep my phones for 2 years usually) and I also use google map a lot>
I have now had my Mate 10 Pro for about 2 months and i am absolutly loving it.
I can confirm that the AOD is moving around, so nothing to worry about there, and the screen itself is stunnig to look at.
Will i get burn-in over time? I don't know. But i really like the screen and the pictures it creates.

Blotchy Black
Hi!
Is anybody experiencing a blotchy screen when you render plain black images? I noticed this in my stock gallery app, Netflix, and video player. It is noticeable in a very dark room. It bothers me since I know that when an OLED panel renders black color it turns off so no light is emitted. But in this case I see a blotchy black.
This "sooner or later", burn in is not how it works. I have a Galaxy S3 and a Note4 with zero burn in, even though I used both heavily for years. (Even for GPS, etc.),
The content matters. Like my sister had an S4 and it had Facebook Messenger burnt into the screen because she was chatting for so many hours.
And after she gave the phone to me just a few months back so I can sell it, the burn in went away after mixed use.
Tl;Dr: Burn in is more of a meme, it's more like retention. I mean the Mate10 Pro has on screen buttons but that's not a 100% chance that it will burn in.
Send it back and get a new one from Amazon. I saw this problem with the camera in white or clears walls. It seems "banding".
I acquired a second hand Mate 10 Pro 3 weeks ago (first owner bought it on the 24th of November), it already had burn-in zones: navigation dock button, Google Search, bottom system buttons bar and many other ones from various apps' icons... These zones are mostly noticeable on clear or white screen/pages (eg: about:blank URL in Chrome browser). At reception, I immediately selected a black theme and activated Battery's dark mode. Now I can see my own apps setup marking the screen... After only 3 weeks...
Am I the only one ?
I'm contacting Huawei customer service.
I finally went to Paris' Huawei customer care center. They told me they never saw/heard about such issue, hard to believe.
They kept my phone 24h and they replaced the full front part (including battery): they only keep the motherboard (can't say if it includes cameras' parts too).
They ensured me waterproofing should be the same. 200 meters after I left the building, I noticed a huge gap where the back plate should stick to the phone's body. So long for waterproofing I suppose.
I immediately went back, and in 10min they replaced the back cover for a brand new one; things are better, but after throrough look, I can see back cover is not perfectly glued... But hey, I have an almost brand new device now.
I took time to compare the demo devices they have, and the Mate 10 Pro had a burned-in screen too, quickly noticeable thanks to Chrome's about:blank URL
hello, kind folks.
I was wondering if this phone handles Clash Royale properly; bought a Mate10 Pro (18.5:9) and the display is crappy.
wasn’t confident on the specs online so I’m asking those who actually that game on this phone TIA
I had to put the app into compatibility mode otherwise it cut off the sides. Works well but has black top and bottom stripes.
I know this is not the place to discuss general issues with the phone but I signed up as these forums have the most and best discussions on the issues. I am on my 3rd Mate 20 Pro as the first two LG ones had the screen bleed issue.
Now I have a BOE screen but it looks absolute trash. It lacks brightness and contrast and has a pink tint towards the top and a green tint at the bottom when you view white pages. Also when I watch videos I get awful colour banding etc on gradients. Also I get odd tints etc whenever I look at the phone from almost any angle. I am so so so disappointed.
I'm just curious if anyone has a BOE screen that is as good as the original LG ones (minus screen bleed obviously) as I don't want to send this back if I'm going to get the same crappy screen back. I'm so frustrated and will never buy a Huawei product again.
I have a BOE Seems really great, nice vibrant colours, whites and Blacks are really good. Only issue I have is if you turn off the adaptive brightness the powergenie dims most Google and Facebook apps. But the last few days I have left the adaptive brightness on auto and it seems to not dim as much. I tend to push the brightness up a little bit though.
Something I have noticed, not related to the screen, is I occasionally hear a little click in the sound, I'm not sure what that is. Unless big brother is activating my microphone. ?

I must admit, I do notice the colour issue mostly in Chrome but it doesn't seem to be exclusive to it. Plus the colour banding issue is really bad on mine. For instance, at 1:28 on this video (https:// youtu.be/tO01J-M3g0U) the sky has awful banding and also an actual flickering. I guess I have a bad display. I just wonder if they will see it or just send it back. It's definetly there and anyone used to good screens would see it however my aging parents said there was nothing wrong with it so it isn't obvious to anyone not used to an OLED screen and I imagine they could easily say they see no issues. Ahhhh.
No issues with my BOE screen. If you secretly swapped it with a (good) LG I wouldn't notice.

boe screens are better imo, this lottery with LG is awful

Ooooooh interestingly that is exactly what mine looks like but reversed and guess what... Same build number. Did you get yours replaced with Huawei or a retailer?
Got my BOE 18B23, looks great - you might have a faulty one.
Looks like a faulty BOE screen...I examined mine obsessively within my 2 weeks return period and found no issues. It MIGHT be a bit less bright that LG, but I am comparing it with Youtube videos and Interweb pics, so it's a false call.
Happy so far.
Definitely looks like you have a defective BOE display. I got mine today (18B23) and it's great, at least compared to my old V30 it's much better.

I received a refund after an email to the Carphone Warehouse CEO. As the IMEI I had was from Huawei not CPW. The CPW have been absolutely fantastic to me.
I went yesterday hell bent on a pixel 3xl. But I was drawn toward the Mate 20 Pro. After much discussion with the manager I ended up walking out with a Mate 20 Pro, 18B26 and it absolutely perfect. It's what the phone should have been from the get go. Uniform, responsive, fast fingerprint scanner, sharp and vibrant.

I have EXACTLY the same problem as you. This is also my 3rd Mate 20 Pro. First was LG, with the green glow issue, that was visible only in dark room with brightness set to minimum and grey background (I am still mad why I returned it, because it was better than BOE) . My second device had a BOE screen with very very bad screen uniformity at low brightness. And now my third Mate has also BOE screen with the same problem as yours. Lower half of the display has a green tint and the upper half has a pink tint. I dont mind if the screen has a tint, because that can be "repaired" by tweaking color temperature. But this is super annoying. When you scroll on sites with white background you can see how it goes from green to pink tint. Otherwise screen is great and therefore I also have a concern about the next device that I might get as a replacement, as this is clearly a lottery now. I am probably going to wait until like a month and then try to get a replacement (I hope they will admit something is wrong with the display) . It is not really affecting the day-to-day usage of the device, it is just my eyes and heart is hurting when looking at the display. Maybe I am just too picky, but I expect from the device which costs 1k€ to be worthy of its price in every department, especially display.

This complete echos my device and my sentiments about the whole thing. For the money this device should not have the issues. It is a fact. This is my first Huawei device and I'm almost certain it will now be my last.
I also don't know which device I would buy, instead of Mate 20 Pro. Once you get used to this IR facial recognition, fingerprint scanner becomes almost useless. It works in every conditions and it's sometimes even too fast. I've been using Mate 9 for the last 2 years and it was super fast from the first to the last day. I got used to the EMUI, gestures are awesome! Oh, and I must not forget about the wide angle lens, it's great. I was thinking about the Note 9, the best display, performance wise also very good (not on pair with Kirin 980 though), camera also very good, fingerprint scanner on the back with facial recognition that is significantly slower and on top of that it's still Samsung, which means that it will get very slow in just a year from buying it (it's also almost 100€ more in my country). Another alternative is OnePlus 6T, display is good, performance it's excellent, software is the best right now, the cameras are on pair with the Note 9, but it lacks wireless charging, IP rating, facial recognition depends only on camera (it doesn't work in the dark) and I can't get it from my carrier. Mate 20 Pro is also the King when it comes to the battery life! So from my point of view, there are no real alternatives to the Mate 20 Pro and I really don't know what to do. Part of me wants to get a replacement ASAP (I am scared of that also), but the other part wants to get something else, because this is going nowhere.
I think a lot of the XDA reports about the LG screens being defective were phony and were made to create mischief and discourage people from buying this phone.
When the gluegate reports started coming in on XDA easily 70% were from XDA accounts that were new and were opened specifically to report supposedly defective screens. How could anybody not have found that suspicious?
The supposed screen bleed issue is a joke. People were comparing the folded OLED on the Mate 20 Pro with Samsung phone screens that don't have folded OLED displays. Obviously the results are going to be different because they are not the same kind of displays. It is 100% normal to have bleed on the edges with a folded OLED display and it is also normal for the edges of the display to look lighter when doing the "uniformity test" that people were told proved the displays were defective.
If you go into the display settings it takes less than 10 seconds to make it appear that your screen has "gone hulk" and take a screenshot.
I have a UK Mate 20 Pro that was preordered before launch. It has an LG display from the initial batch that multiple XDA members claim were 100% defective. The display looks great and is not defective in any way.
A few weeks ago I purchased a 256GB global version and planned to upgrade. But that phone had a BOE display that was very inferior to the LG one so I ended up returning it. The BOE screen had washed out colors and was noticibly less bright than the LG display which is the reason people don't see screen bleed at the edges. Pixel response was also slower than the LG display.
A lot of people who participated in a "screen lottery" and kept returning M20P phones until they got one with a BOE display ultimately found that those displays had inferior color and brightness to the LG display.
I'm pretty certain there was nothing wrong with the phone you returned. Unfortunately I have seen 3 M20P phones with BOE displays and all 3 had washed out colors compared to the LG display.
