Hi I am Rupesh from India and I have a PC and redmi note 4 with 64 GB internal storage. I want to transfer files between redmi note 4 and PC but can't. I am getting a number of errors while transferring in various situations.
I have a folder in external SD card which contains 500 mp3 files of size 2.5 GB. I have tried to move these files to a folder in PC and unfortunately 150 files are transferred properly with correct size and remaining 350 files are copied with zero size for all files. Finally I have lost 350 files in SD card so I have tried to recover using data recovery software in redmi note 4 itself but failed. In order to transfer these files I have compressed them after that copied the resulted zip file to PC and succeeded.
I have three text files in a folder of PC. First I have selected these three text files and selected copy option after that I have connected the phone to PC and selected transfer files option after that in internal storage I have made right click and I can't find paste option and even I have pressed Ctrl+v and no use. I have tried to copy these text files to lenovo a3000 internal storage which is connected as USB storage and successfully completed.
Previously I have tried to copy 2000 mp3 files of size 9 GB and unfortunately 1500 files are copied and remaining left un copied.
Suppose if I want to copy a folder containing 1000 files from PC to redmi note 4 and the phone already contains 500 files. I want to copy remaining 500 files and skip already existing files. I have tried copy and paste and it asked confirmation to replace existing files or not and I have selected no and after that the paste process is taking lot of time. If I try to copy these 1000 files to an empty folder of phone storage the paste process is taking less time than above.
I have used a number of android phones and tabs and all of them have an option to mount storage as USB storage in PC but redmi note 4 doesn't. Can anyone of you suggest how to mount internal storage or external SD card as USB storage. Is there any android app which allows mounting as USB storage.
My PC runs Windows 8.1 pro and my phone runs MIUI 9.
Is there any PC companion suite specifically for redmi note 4 which allows transferring files between redmi note 4 and PC with minimum errors.
Regards,
Rupesh.
Is it possible to transfer huge amount of files between PC and redmi note 4 using the software specified above.
At present I have rooted my phone and installed custom recovery and so is there any firmware or app in order to mount internal and external storages as USB removable storage drives.

USB storage? Like the normal "transfer files" option, or MTP storage (USB debugging option)? You can use TWRP and I think that mounts both drives as USB storage.
Did you convert your SD card to internal storage? Or is it portable storage? When you take the SD card out and insert it into your computer, do you have access to your files, or no? If not, it's configured as internal storage.

USB storage I mean I want to use it as normal USB removable storage like pen drive. Up to now I have connected my phone to computer by turning on USB debugging option.
In mtp mode file transfer is taking lot of time that too error prone. Suppose I want to copy a directory containing 100 sub directories and 2000 mp3 files from PC to my internal storage and when I try to paste and it will ask do you want to skip already existing file's and when I select yes it is taking up to 1.5 hours just to skip already existing file's.
In mtp mode when I connect my phone to PC in Windows explorer I am able to see an entry called android phone and when I enter into it I am able to see two entries called "internal storage" and external SD card. I have another android device ie., tablet called lenovo a3000 h and when I connect it to my PC I am able to see two entries with new drives for internal storage and external storages like g: drive for internal storage and h: drive for external storage. When I try to copy files from PC to my tab the file transfer is very fast without any errors and also skipping existing file's is also fast. The tab is running ice cream Sandwich and my phone is running nought.
My external SD card is portable I mean I am able to access the files present in it when I connect it to PC using card reader. The problem is my phone ie., redmi note 4 is a sealed piece I mean if I want to take SD card out I have to use a needle.
I think that you have understood my problem and so can you try to suggest how to connect my internal and external storages as g: and h: drives.

If you want to use it as normal removable storage, that's called portable mode. When you first inserted your SD card into your device, it might have given you two options: format as portable storage or internal storage. Those are the options I was presented with on LOS 15.1. I don't know how it works on MIUI.
If portable storage, then your SD card should show up as another entry when you connect your phone to your computer. If internal storage, only one entry shows (since your SD card is combined with your internal storage). Since I formatted my SD card as internal storage, it shows up as one entry when I connect and select the "Transfer files" option.
In TWRP, the SD card and internal storage show up as two distinct entries (I guess that's just how TWRP works).
It sounds like there's something wrong with your SD card, IMO. Remove it to the phone and insert it into the computer by itself. Format it, then put it back into your phone and see if that fixes anything.

I used Titanium Backup to backup some game saves I had & found out not all of them got backed up so I have to start from scratch. I'm guessing some are saved on the internal storage is there any way of backing up those files?
backup internal
If you attach your computer to USB, choose Disk Drive option.
Then, in Windows Explorer, you can see both phone drives.
One (the internal you want) may be named HTC STORAGE.
Either way, you'll see both removable disks, and you can copy them
off for your backup.
Ok but the one your saying as the HTC STORAGE is actually the Phone Storage. There's 3 Drives I see on the phone Internal Storage, Phone Storage & the SD Card such as the removable disk.
3 drives
Yo, I've hooked up to XP, vista, and Win7 machines and only see 2 drives that can be accessed. Can you see data in those 3 drives you mentioned?
I don't see a Internal Storage drive

That must be a stock ROM setup??
Sorry for the mix up, I got confused it's actually a CD Rom drive. So is the Internal Storage part of the HTC Storage?
I have several videos i want to transfer from sd card back to my computer.
But everytime i try it just cuts of the transfer and doesnt move any files.
With my old phone it was read as removable device and with teracopy i could move all that i wantd.
But with S3 it mounts my device as "GT-I9300 Portable Media Player" not as SD card.
I would use a sd card adaptor but my sd card is encrypted so will only work with phone.
Is there a way around this and mount the phone as a removable device or are there programs to manage the file transfer from phone to pc?

WiFi file transfer Pro is my suggestion. It doesn't require a cable - you just connect to the same wifi network as your comp. and then type an adress in the url bar and then download/upload as you please to both internal and external sd.
Thanks for your reply.
Wifi file transfer pro is a paid app, if there a way to do this using the transfer cable as i usually move several gigs over from my phone to computer and back and prefer to use a reliable connection.
Also i am unable to use teracopy to transfer my files like before i am limited to just move and when try moving several files it makes the next set copy across instead of moving.
Use Airdroid
It's free & it's actually the dogs nuts. It's on every pc, laptop & phone I own.

I am unable to access/see the internal SD when I plug in to USB and choose USB Mass Storage option. I can access the external SD, but internal now refuses to mount. I rooted for the first time about a month ago and have not had the time to do anything further beyond a Titanium backup. Everything is present and working properly, I can use a file explorer to see the internal memory, but cannot access or manipulate via PC. My Computer presents two drives (internal and Ext SD), but clicking on the one that should be internal gets me the popup "please insert disc into drive..." This did not happen at the same time as root, have been rooted several weeks before problem appeared.
recently i have bought 128gb memory card for my z2.i have connected the z2 using usb cable & transfer videos, songs & images to sd card using MTP format (i couldnt use mass storage because when i'm tring to connect using mass storage it appears a msg that you need to format the memory card which i'm done for several times i do have a pc with windows xp) anyhow i have transferred the files to memory card & make sure all the files have been copied.after i remove usb cable and explore the files through 'xplore' it shows that some audio files in my memory card have been lost but some audio files including all videos and images are there in my memory card.some specific files have been missed i have copy and paste those files to another folder same has happen there..... could you please help me out
thanks
Hi P9000 users!
I had now time to test some stuff with my P9000. One question: I inserted a Sandisk 128 GB SDXC Card (UHS) and formatted as internal Storage (want to move apps). Worked fine for the Phone and i was able to move apps to the SD. But after connecting Phone to USB (via MTP & unlocked phone) it only shows 32 GB internal SD. Also via File Explorer app on the phone i cannot find the external SD or mountpoint....
Anyone with same issue? I also changed connection-type to USB and then my OS (Win 10) does not open phone file system at all.
thx and br

We did an article about the SD card memory management in Marshmallow a while ago on the XDA portal that explains this, I'd suggest googling for it as I can't remember the title.
Edit: Something to do with the SD card being formatted as Ext4 (linux file system standard these days) and Windows not supporting Ext4 filesystems.
Thx for reply, so i am afraid its related to Android 6 default behaviour. So if SD is formatted as internal storage you cannot access via USB from PC or managing files on it via file browser app? Thats really disappointing for me since it then switches SD card to enhanced app storage only, useless for image, videos, music etc. Of course i can format as portable SD, but then no movement of apps are possible (via root its maybe the only option).
In SD portable mode, i also had issue that SD cards randomly disconnects and one time it even needed to be reformatted. Have read about that in another thread, that this is related to physical sd mount... will see to fix this with some tape :/ (gives me not a good feeling here)

Update: checked some forums and blogs, seems not to be android 6 default behavior that you completely cannot access the files on adopted SD-card anymore. after adopting as internal storage... anyone could also reproduce this? I will try doing factory reset with SD-Card inserted..
