Hi All,
I know its a topic which has been addressed differently in different threads. I am a user from India and have a GSM SIM. I have got a Verizon S4 phone. I tried using it with Vodafone SIM and get a problem in using it. Surprisingly a NOTE 2 from Verizon works just fine. I am able to use it for data with 3G but not able to use it for voice. Following steps have been tried already.
- Default Options of using Global Mode and GSM/UMTS ** Doesnt search the network at all.
- Hidden Menu Changes using # codes. ** Shows network but emergency mode only.
- Phone Info app to change the mode. ** Shows network but emergency mode only.
- RF Band change using the hidden menu. ** Shows network but emergency mode only.
It does say that it has GSM radio but cant be used for some software reason I suppose. I checked with Verizon Rep and was told that it cannot be used in India with a GSM SIM and would need the Verizon SIM only to connect with International Roaming.
Can I install a I-9505 ROM on this and then would it pick up the GSM signal for voice and data. Please help.
I don't think your Verizon rep is correct. I bought a Verizon S4 just before going to Europe for 1 month. I used first a gsm SIM card from Germany, and then a gsm card from France. I had to add APN's to get data (I used "offline sim APN database" from the market to help get the necessary APN info), but had no trouble with voice or data for my entire trip. The gps and navigation services on the phone were extremely valuable on a couple of occasions, as was the wifi hotspot. In France, you can purchase 2 GB of data service for 20 Euros. I checked with Verizon global services ( 908-559-4899 outside the US or 800-711-8300 from inside ) before I left, and the Verizon S4 was sim unlocked out of the box. They did not make a big deal of my plan to use other SIM cards either.

Installed WamanLite I9505 ROM
Hello All,
I found that Wanam Lite I-9505 ROM can be installed on Verizon S4. I installed it and patched it with Loki-Doki patch to boot up as I got the Verizon Software error. Yet my phone doesnt pick up the GSM signal for voice and SMS. It picks up the signal and I am able to browse internet on it but no calls or SMS. Please help...!!
Is there any way that I can install or flash a regular GSM radio over the phone ? Or tweak it in someway to use the GSM signal as primary for voice and sms.

I have also Verizon's S4 (i545) and use it in GSM network with only one small problem - it will not send SMS with in-ROM SMS apk to international-formatted numbers (+380-XX-XXX and so on), but send without problem to local-formatted numbers (XX-XXX...) All the rest is working good.
Could you tell me please - how did you get to install i9505's ROM on your device? I have also Verizon's error after installation, and don't know how to run it...
Hi I too have the vzw s4 in india.. and niether voice nor sms is functioning on it.
By rooting it and installing apn manager I was somehow able to get the data 3g working for vodafone ind.
I too am struggling to find a solution to this.
Ive haventvyet flashed it. I came across a guy who said he will be able to get it working but somehow I havent yet been abke to follow up with him.
Guess we both are on the same boat.
Lets keep in touch and update if any of us finds a solution to this.

You all can try to flash my port of ARHD 2.0 ROM, that can be found it this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2346365
It is fully GSM and as international as regular GSM-version of S4. CDMA can be turned on only on hidden test application. Everything else is working and was tested in different networks.
I too created a post seeking help in this regard but didn came across anything concrete yet.
Everyone out here believes it to be a world phone and some have even been using the gsm network in europe but its not working in india.
Ive failed to understand that how come its detecting signals with functioning data is not working on either voice or sms.
Tmobile and atnt gs4 guess have this service menu from where they can be network unlocked explicitly..but unfortunately I havent yet come any such thing for vzw gs4.

I tried installing the ARHD 2.0 ROM but still the same issue persists. The phone picks up the signal for data but when tried selecting network manually or automatic using the GSM / UMTS option, it says disable data to search networks, when data is disabled, the phone shows available networks says phone registered to network but the status still says Emergency Calls Only. Also if tried dialing a phone it says no network available. There has to be something in the modem settings which can be tweaked through the service menu which will change the use of GSM for voice and data and not use CDMA.

Did you do a full wipe when flashing ROM? It is mandatory. You will lose all your data though. If there will be no changes after full wipe - then try to install this card into another phone and ckeck if voice calling is working.

I did a full wipe. I have 2 Galaxy S4's and also an Optimus G. The card that I am using is my regular SIM card so its not an issue with the card for sure. The ROM was installed on both the phones and neither of them picked up the signal for voice and SMS.

Ok. To go and chose type of radio-band you may install Battery Monitor Widget from Google Play (well, the main purpose of this app is different, but it is what comes first in my mind). Put it's widget on the desktop, open it and go for bottom right button, named Test. There you can first menu (Device Info) and there you will be able to change all variations of the radio bands and their combinations, available for i545. If non of the combinations will help - mosty probably your operator works on unsupported for this phone cellular format.

I have the Phone Info app which allows band select. Tried on all possible modes. Same issue persists. Strangely the Note 2 purchased from Verizon works flawlessly without any mods or changes. I am thinking of giving to some professional phone guy who may have code level flashing or modding tools to try and fiddle around with settings of the modem or the radio to pick up the signal here.

Hey phrozenwire, I am able to use both voice n sms now in my VZW GS4.
And I literally did nothing to make the voice n sms functional. I too had troubles for like 2 weeks and it didn work for me then.
I rooted the phone to add apn settings and the data got activated. But today morning when I woke up ... surprise surprise .. it began to work.. rcvd sms and calls and I was so happy. . Last I remember I switched on the power save mode and my cell fell down twice and guess it did the trick for me.
Thanks all for your help and comments.

Hi guys,
I own a Japanese Z2, originally by docomo (SO-03F) and flashed the English firmware I found in this forum (not sure for which area tho), except obviously the modem which I needed to use the docomo SIM.
I came back to Europe, unlocked the phone through an online service which worked fine but none of my SIMs can get a signal or behaves very weirdly.
I tried flashing the modem from the ROM I used before but then I couldn't get any reception and looking for networks through settings didn't show anything. With the Japanese ROM modem, I can find networks if I look manually but I can't connect to them. It shows "Selected network unavailable" and or "Can't connect to network at this time." after selecting the correct one.
I tried fiddling with the settings, different network types etc in the normal menu and in the one accessible through entering *#*#INFO#*#* but nothing helped. The phone number in the menu is shown correctly. As preferred network type, LTE/GSM/CDMA auto (PRL) is selected.
I have an older sim card in the right format which can't connect (works fine in other phones) but SOMETIMES I get like 2 bars for a few minutes. It's for phonecalls and SMS only. The internet only card I have is smaller so I need an adapter and won't connect at all. Is there something I can do about this?
Thanks a lot!
I am unable to receive any incoming calls in GSM/WCDMA/LTE mode, after 1-2 hrs of standby. Data works fine but calls donot come through. The IVR says that the phone is switched off/out of network coverage area even though i have 4 bars of signal. I have into the hidden menu trying to activate volte feature which is by itself not present in settings. Still no effect. I have also changed sims, changed operators but the issue persists. Can anyone please help!

What V30 variant do you have, what carrier are you on? When you changed SIMs, changed operators was it still the same underlying network (like two different MVNOs that both use AT&T, for instance) or two completely different networks (AT&T vs T-mobile).
Are you on Nougat or Oreo. Have you recently flashed a different KDZ to convert your phone to something else or are you completely with original firmware?

I have LG V30+ H930DS Indian software version- V10f-IND-xx. I am on Idea Cellular network. I have tried changing the operators and keeping the same operator but different number.
Currently my device is on 7.1.2 Nougat using original firmware. I did not flash anything.
I really need WiFi Calling in order to reasonably use this phone for calls from my house due to a poor Network signal. There is no Wifi Calling option in Calls -> Settings or in Settings -> Network & internet -> Mobile network anywhere. Also when I do *#*#4636#*#* and go into Phone information Wifi Calling Provisioned option is grayed out.
Nope. Last time I saw wifi calling available was on the XZP. Wasn't an option for the XZ3, and still not an option for the Xperia 1. Try giving tmobile a call or maybe sony support and ask if they can add wifi calling support.

Which frimeware is that ? Is that US unbranded
Nope, no wifi calling for me. I originally had the J9110 model (international dual sim, hong kong) but i recently flashed it with the US firmware. No dice, unfortunately. But since changing to the US firmware, I now get VoLTE and group message in Android Messages. It's a start.
Ya VoLTE is working fine and appears as provisioned in the hidden menu. So it seems like I will have to do something similar to what I did on the XZ Premium in order to get WiFi Calling...but I will wait until there is a DRM backup process.

I see the same thing as you. How did you do it on the xz premium?
I had to root it and flash a zip that someone made for it, it might be possible to use the same zip but I'm not going to root mine until there is a DRM backup method. I barely every talk on the phone without LTE service so it's more so just really annoying not having WiFi Calling. I think a bunch of people were using the same zip for the 2017/2018 xperia phones to get it working.
I have XZ premium and XZ1 and wifi calling option is displayed when I use the Jio sim but not displayed when using Airtel sim (using Airtel broadband), so our phones do have wifi calling facility but working only with Jio sim, although Sony is not shown in the compatible phones list. I am in India.
That also stresses me out on My Xperia 5. Don't know If You talked about My Zips for VoLTE and the other Features but i didn't get it to work actually on Android 10. Possible that i just don't have the right Firmware atm (Customized EU / My Devices Firmware isn't Out yet), so i'm using Custom UK Firmware but that should also work... I'm a bit confused so i switched to GSIs which Made it even worse... Looks like we should start making Custom Vendors for our Xperias since the Methods changed over Android 7-8-9-10
Can you flash the dual sim model to work with a single sim firmware and does Wi-fi Calling Work later?
yes, that's what i did with my xz3. volte works with tmobile, but not att.
So I got the phone and it's working really well. My biggest issue is the lack of VoWifi. I called T-Mobile and the tech felt it should have it.
When I dialed *#*#4636#*#* (I think it's that), VoWifi is greyed out. Is there any way to use ADB or anything to force-enable it? There's no way, with the LTE/5G bands it has that it cannot be enabled on T-Mobile...

It can be related to your provider or it's SIM settings. I use Dual SIM. My Vodafone (NL) in SIM bay 1 has the WiFi-calling option. My KPN (NL) in bay 2 doesn't have it.

That's because Google has its own WiFi calling implementation, not using VoWIFI. It should work on just about any device.
I am able to get VoWIFI on T-Mobile after flashing Sony's Developer Binary (for the Xperia 1 ii), but unfortunately that one comes with some other unacceptable compromises (like no task switcher). Anyway the attached screenshot shows the service screen (dial *#*#INFO#*#*) on T-Mobile with this firmware. T-Mobile WiFi calling also works with even more out-of-fashion phones like my Nokia 9 PureView, so I would say this is definitely a Sony firmware issue.
In turn, the WiFi hotspot function does not work on Google Fi on any of my Xperias (1 ii, 5 ii, 1 iii). The client (e.g. laptop) connects to the phone and gets an IP address, but can never reach any website. It works fine with other phones (Nokia, Samsung,. ... and even the same developer image), and it works fine also with the Xperia on T-Mobile and AT&T. I suspect some iptables/firewall incompatibility between Fi and Sony's stock firmware.
I returned my phone back to sony because of missing vowifi.
T-mobile expert said its fully compatible but Sony expert said All Sony Phone dont have vowifi (disabled by software)
So I bought Xperia 1 III (along with a prepaid 3HK SIM card) when I was traveling in Hong Kong.
I inserted that 3HK SIM card to Sony phone, the Wi-Fi Calling was an option in the setting menu.
But after I returned to US, I swapped an Ultra Mobile SIM card to the Xperia 1 III, the Wi-Fi calling option is gone.
Before that, the Ultra Mobile SIM card worked perfectly on a Samsung Note 9 (also Hong Kong version) with Wi-Fi calling enabled. So it looks like it's a software problem.
Tried Google Fi SIM card, I was able to activate Wi-Fi Calling in Google Fi app, but not in phone setting menu.
T-Mobile VoWiFi is incompatible with the stock Sony firmware. You can get it back by flashing one of Sony's developer binaries onto your OEM partition (for "open devices" like the Xperia 1 ii and 5 ii but not 1 iii); however this also makes the phone not really suitable for day-to-day use (for instance, no "recent apps" switcher).
FWIW, T-Mobile VoWiFi works great on my older Nokia 9 PureView, which is definitely not a "known" device as far as T-Mobile is concerned. So the issue is limited to the combination of T-Mobile USA and stock Sony firmware. (Of course, VoWiFi also does not work on AT&T, but that's expected since they only provision AT&T-branded phones).
WiFi calling works on Google Fi, because they use their own implementation (not VoWiFi). Alas, WiFi hotspot functionality is broken on Fi - there seems to be something like a firewall/iptables incompatibilty between Fi and the Sony firrmware. The client (e.g. laptop) is able to obtain an IP address and ping the phone, but is not able to then connect to the Internet. (This, too, is fixed with the developer image above).
FWIW, as a workaround, you can install the T-Mobile DIGITS application and enable this feature on your account to make calls over WiFi. The only caveat, as I learned today, is that this does not let you make international calls. :-(

They are actually just meant to bring back some of the original Sony functionality (e.g. camera) on top of a plain-vanilla AOSP build. For instance you can build and install AOSP 12 and then flash this image to the OEM partition. Won't give you Google Play services though, so not really useful for most people.
However you can also flash it on a stock Sony firmware. (Just apply step 7 in the AOSP instructions above, without doing the rest). Fixes some issues, including VoWIFI on T-Mobile and WiFi hotspot on Google Fi, but unfortunately the recent apps switcher is then gone.
Only available for "Open Devices" like the Xperia 1 ii and 5 ii, but not 1 iii.
I know this is a roundabout solution, but it worked for me:
Port your number(s) to Google Voice. This will end your current wireless subscription.
Sign up for a new wireless plan, with new numbers. (*) If you order a new plan online, it's a good idea to do this first so that the SIMs arrive ready for activation before you start the previous step.
Set up Google Voice to forward your calls to that number. Or better yet, install the Voice app on your phone - you can redirect both inbound and outbound calls via this app/service. (I.e. you can use the native dialer to make Voice calls; however for text messages and voicemail you need to use the Voice app).
Optional: In the native phone app, block all inbound calls directly to the new number (remember, your primary one is now on Google Voice).
This also gives you the ability to send/receive calls, voicemail, text messages on a web browser. In other words, all of this is essentially a roundabout way of getting functionality similar to Google Fi; but remember, Fi's hotspot does not work on the Xperia.
(*) Apparently if your carrier is T-Mobile, cancelling 3+ lines and then signing up for 3+ new ones won't give you the same discount as the original signup. According to a local T-Mobile store rep I talked to, if you cancel and recreate service within 90 days, the system thinks you are trying to somehow cheat on discounts. Weird -- I ended up going (back) to AT&T for this reason. You may also consider T-Mobile MVNOs such as Mint Mobile. (**)
(**) Oddly enough, in addition to better overall coverage, I get much higher download speeds on AT&T LTE/LTE+ compared to T-Mobile 5G (NR/NSA) - even in a place with full bars on both carriers. I did a test today with two SIMs in the phone - on AT&T I got 100 Mbps down on first try, whereas on T-Mobile the best I ever got (20+ tries) was ~30 Mbps down; typically 15-20. Not sure if this is another artifact of the Sony firmware, YMMV.
------
Course, if you only need to make domestic calls while on WiFi, T-Mobile DIGITS is the path of least resitance.
