After the stock firmware OTA update/upgrade, the user installed apps and other data will still there left intact.
Why the necessary to wipe /data when flash a custom ROM?

I always think that flashing a new ROM will put the new ROM image in /system and wipe everything there.
but seems that flashing a new ROM, and format /system then flashing a new ROM has different result.
Flashing a new rom (unofficially - e.g Custom Roms via ClockworkMod), will NOT wipe data automatically. BUT it is highly recommended to wipe data before flashing a new rom. Some roms won't require that like coming from a CyanogenMod nightly to another. On the other hand, some roms will not work whatsoever unless the data is wiped before flashing.
I always backup currant rom, and wipe all data. Fix it right the first time! lol
I just do a factory reset, wipe cache and dalvik, then flash the rom straight. Would you be kind enough to tell me what difference is there between flashing rom straight and format system before flashing rom?
I'm currently on MI5 rooted via Vega..
Currently I'm looking to update to MJ4.
Question is,... I want to reflash MI5_vega modified to get the OTA from the system. But I want to start from scratch. How do I wipe the phone without using TWRP? What option do I check in ODIN for the system to wipe the phone (keeping the storage) during the MI5 flash?
How to backup stock firmware on twrp as i backup stock firmware on twrp n when i want to restore it gives error encryption failure need to reset your phone, am i doing anything wrong in backing up
no need to restore. if u install a custom rom over miui, the miui's firmware partition will not be removed/deleted. u only wipe system+data+cache+dalvik, firmware partition remains the same as before
Encrypt with flash oficial roms. Never use oficial roms.
To solve go to twrp, in wipes menu chose format data partition in ext4.
Use always xiaomi.eu roms.
I have a H930DS V30+ running stock v20d-GLOBAL-COM. It has bootloader unlocked with TWRP and is rooted. I want to update it to a newer version (primarily to get more up to date security patches). If I upgrade to Pie, is it better to this via installing KDZ or by applying the OTA update files (I think I would need to do multiple updates using the OTA files)? Ideally I don't want to wipe and have to reinstall apps.

https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=6006931924117927842 , wipe only system, cache, dalvik cache, and flash this zip and you'll go to pie while preserving data (dirty flash)

Thx for the info. I hadn't seen that option to install ROM via zip file on the thread that had title about KDZ. I have upgraded now. Thanks to @seadersn for creating the zip :good:
