I, along with others, would suggest to start with the stock rom.
It forces you to learn the ins and outs of how things work and how to do certain mods and helps you just understand everything overall. but you can always choose to start with someone else's rom, but that doesn't necessarily make you a rom chef.

I have no problem getting into ROM's head first.. taking someone else work and reworking it to my own doesnt give me any gratification.. i'd like to be able to say "i made this work this way". yeah everyone is doing ROM's, will i ever release what i do, who knows.. i just know what i want..
i'm not looking into making the best ROM out or recoding till my eyes hurt.. I would like to learn the in's n outs.. And learn to implement some of the MODS currently out.
did some searching and i've come up with Stock Incredible Sense *3.26.605.1* (Rooted) by rmk as a base.. any better bases?
now that im thinking of it, i'll need to get the OTA's worked in from there..
much thanks for the info..
so as much as i want to dig into all this.. time isnt on my side.. my wife and i had our twin daughters back in october, and it's extremely difficult to find any kind of computer time. not to mention im not even back to work yet, and i have already obligated myself to my small record label and my interest in working for myself via real estate sales.. i may just need to let the ROM people keep doing what they do and i enjoy and support their work..

Advice regarding ROM?

I just updated SGA to 2.3.4 (can't see many changes )
Anyways, which is the stable ROM for SGA? (I just Downloaded the unofficial CM7.1 port)....
theres no such thing as "the best rom".
try any rom and if u dont like it, just reflash another one. and if u like it, stick with it.
Expected a better reply
Okay,Which is a good ROM for now?
see, thats the problem. everyone had their own idea which is the "best" rom for them. i might say its this rom. someone else would say another. u'll never get a concrete answer.
Advice is always welcome bro
If someone considers a ROM good, there must be a reason for it.
Btw, which ROM you use??
i'm still using my chinese zckpa rom. from all stock rom, zckpa is the most feature rich close to cm7. but since cm7 is still beta and buggy, zckpa is a good choice for me since i can had feature close to cm while still had stability same as stock. best from both world, feature rich+stability.
Just have to say, by pointing you to the "best rom" of my opinion might as well be depriving other rom developers of motivation to continue their rom. It's not fair to point new users to one rom.
"Expected a better reply?" In here we're to learn and share not to take and expect and demand. Cheers!

Yeah, I'm well aware of amount of time and hard work done in building those ROMs...
Apoligies if anyone is offended
Another question, should I install the CM7.1??
is it stable enough?
read my previous post, and on the thread title of cm7 said "beta". u should get the idea if its stable or not
To me it's stable enough since I use the phone a lot.
Small bugs here and there depends on whether you prefer it or not. Just flash! When you've become part of the flashaholics you will see that the best way to tell if the rom is good for you is to FLASH IT.
Try his zskpa rom too it has excellent features.
I actually like to test all the stuff but it's not my phone & I have to just flash and give it to my friend...
Hence I just wanted to confirm things
(He mainly give emphasis to looks of the phone )
ROM'S for first timers
U can try Ginger Real (its among one of the most stable ROM) otherwise if u want more functionality then go for Cyanogen Mod's either KANG or CYANO ACE ..they are awesome in speed and functionality ...offer a lots of tweaks and best performance as well as looks.
But for a beginner i would suggest Ginger Real ....it's kinda peace max sticks to stock types ..
well thz are just mine saying .....no offense to nybody
Best rom is the one who has not yet been released. Finding the perfect yet nobody did.
Sorry for my english

[Q] Do Any ICS Roms Support AVRCP?

I know there has been a lot of talk about AVRCP, and it all gets quite confusing when you spend hours reading into it.
I was just curious if there was any current ICS roms that support it? I can't seem to find much recent information on it, other than this whole BlueZ thing that I don't quite understand.
There seems to be a lot of information about older version of CyanogenMod support it but can't find anything about CM9. I may have misunderstood what everyone was on about, but also couldn't figure out a way to port it my current install.
If someone could shed some light on this, it would be great!
Stock ROMs should support it out of the box, have you actually tried?
http://www.bluetooth.org/tpg/QLI_PRD2Profiles.cfm?varID=29994&ProductID=16371
No I've got to admit I haven't tried a stock rom for some time. With people mentioning how bad the battery life is on some of them I didn't see the point.
Maybe it's time to give one a go. Although I did have *some* luck with MIUI and CM9 Music app, that transmitted some of the metadata, but for the wrong track and didn't change when the track did, well in fact it didn't change at all.
here with 4.0.4 avcrp dont work.
hope custom rom devs cant implement this

[Q] Really, whats the difference?

Ok, so im looking at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278 specifically in the Frankenstein firmwares section because, seriously, if your going to put bits and peices together they gotta be the good bits n peices right?
Im mostly confused tho, whats the difference between LP2, LP3, LPS, LP4, LP7, LPD, etc.?
I know many of them were released in different regions, branding is going to be slightly different, apps i dont care about i usually strip out the crappy apps anyways.
I flash my modem because its what works best for me. Kernel i use Siyah. What differences, if any, will i see with the different roms? Or are they all pretty much the same?
If they are all pretty much the same then that begs the question why all the different versions? Which is widely accepted as "the best" or "One of the best" ?
EDIT
That last sentance was more directed as a "stay away from JPKI1 its rather buggy, ____ Is pretty much the same but without the bugs". On my prime its the same firmware pretty much worldwide, just translation is different for each region. Its easy to tell which version is better, usually the higher number is newer and has the previous versions bugs worked out. Samsung had to go weird and make regional updates so every region has a different version. THAT is where my confusion is.

Lol, in reguards to that i HAVE been trying out as many roms as i can and frankly im starting to forget which ones i tried and which ones i didnt try. I have found that some are just bad and people say to avoid them because most people have problems, thats more what i was hoping for with that statment.
I dont expect to have people do the work for me or try all the roms for me, and i know whats good for one person may not be good for another, im just... Overwhelmed by the abundance of options that are all apparently the same. Thats all.
To reiterate: THIS IS NOT A WHICH IS BEST thread, its a whats the difference thread, and im hoping to be pointed in the direction of which i might stay away from due to poor performance and which generally are the more accepted. But if even such generalities are pushing the rules too much we can omit that bit.

I've found changing your kernel makes more of a difference for me, since I tend to do most modding on my own anyway.

Where can i learn about modding roms? Usually i find im doing the same things to the roms i download, remove bloatware, install apex, install my own calendar and other widgets... If im already removing the differences then why bother changing roms since they are the same?

Just searching the forums, dude. I had to do all my own legwork learning how to decompile .apk files, how to then tweak/edit them, then recompile them... Along with how to use smali/baksmali. There are a bunch of tutorials out there in the Theme/App section, as well as the development sections.
Just start somewhat small; do some searches for "APK Edit" or "APK Manager". That should give you something to start with. Once you have a grasp of that, you'll find other stuff just ends up in your lap as a result.
Edit to add: as a result of what I've picked up, I've found I prefer Samsung stock firmwares that I tweak to my own liking over other ROMs.
Well back to the root question: Main difference between the many, many different versions of stock ICS. What kind of stuff do they change? Whats so different between WXLP7 and LPDFG, for instance?

Unfortunately, Samsung doesn't publish changelogs. So the only way to know is to try them both out yourself...
Or I guess you could wait until someone who already has tried them both out and noted all the changes reads this post and responds.

I think he was asking about the overall firmwares, and not specifically the modem.
I was kinda hoping for the latter since my unexperienced eye didnt notice anything doing the former.
Didnt know sammy didnt provide changelogs, that kind of sucks. Oh well, was worth a shot i guess.
Guess this thread wont go anywhere since theres no tangeable proof one way or the other of any differences. Thanks for the patience with me anyways XD

Custom Roms

I have learned quite a few things now with the dell streak 5 ever since I fixed it, I see that the ICS Roms are in their early stages, All I want is for a Rom that looks exactly like ICS I can't find any good ones that are like that. Can anybody tell me a ROM that is good for that?
