How good is the built-in Xperia backup tool? - Sony Xperia X Questions & Answers

Compared to Titanium especially.
What are the limits?
I know that I couldn't restore to a non-Xperia phone.
I'd use it to backup to an OTG USB device. No cloud games for me. Yuck.

[Q] How can I access Mass Storage Mode on the Xperia S?

How do I connect the Sony Xperia S in Mass Storage Mode?
There must be a way? Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) mode is not ideal for transferring Photos and Videos (ironically) as it doesn't show you thumbnails for the Pictures and Videos on your phone. Neither can you stream the videos straight from the device this way..
You have to first click on the file and wait for it to load, just to find out its not the one you want, and repeat the arduous process all over again for the next Video, till you get to the one you wanted..
Please Help
Download Sony PC companion there is an option in there to open the drive on your phone (storage)
Sent from my LT26i using xda premium
MTP is the only mode that there is but there is a file manager in PC Companion software

We can all open the storage on the device..windows does this by itself through autoplay when you connect the phone..
I'm talking specifically about mounting the storage with Full access privileges, as it would be if you plugged in a mass storage device (such as a hard drive).
All the previous Xperia range allowed this, and of what I know, most android devices allow this. This is a very fundamental feature required and expected of all phones these days. Your not exactly going to enjoy downloading a 3GB Video file only to find out that's not the one you were after..

It's also one that is going away with unified storage models. There are technical reasons behind this (as it's all one partition leveraging a fuse file system to mimic external storage) that it can't simply be "unmounted" from the OS side and mounted as external storage.

So the paying Consumers lose another round
vs Manufacturers and their cost cutting techniques..
Soon we will have phones that are nothing to do with what we want, they will be what's left after its attacked by a budget sheet. Zombies of the mobile world, where passion doesn't exist..
(lol got a bit carried away there, but you get the point) since when does something that's been demonstrated to be the more user friendly option (as demonstrated on the Galaxy s2 amongst other android handsets), get thrown out as if consumers are too stupid to notice that we are being put at a disadvantage?
oh well, welcome to the pathetic future, where what's in my pocket is what the account manager needed to get his bonus this year

It's more of a movement that does away with insufficient internal storage and allows the user to leverage available space however they see fit, but there is a tradeoff there.

I actually like the way it is now better. No more hassling around with too little storage for apps (HTC desire was horrible in that perspective). The built in memory is faster than SD cards. And mtp is working fine for most things.

Yey - they do a pc companion... problem is, I'm using a mac...
So no way of copying photos from/to it using iPhoto.
On the plus side, at least the "Salling Media Sync" application I used to use to copy music to my Hero/Desire still works with this phone when plugged in by usb.

You can use Sony Bridge for Mac to sync your music to your iTunes and it will move photos to your phone from iPhoto. It will also do software upgrades as well and use it as a file manager for your files on your phone.
MTP works fine on Windows, and there is the excellent Bridge for Mac for all Mac users:

Anyone knows if I will be able to use my Sammy TV with Anynet+ and use the controller, just like Sony ones?
Or listen to music from it on my Xbox?

Thanks for the Bridge to Mac tip guys... I've had my Sony Xperia S for a day so far, loving the phone so far - screen and camera are awesome, nice bump in speed over my old Desire too. Just didn't see anything on the mac bridge in all the google results on the subject of transferring files.
Will give it a go.

Anynet+ is just HDMI CEC and will work fine! Has been tried and tested.
If the Xbox supports standard DLNA, music sharing should work.

I am not able to transfer .mkv file to the phone, I think simple mass storage should be included.

But you can put .mkv file to the memory card and than move it to the root with X-Plore

The irony is, that Xperia S choose to ignore this advantage as it still divides flash into "internal" and "external" storage. In my eyes it is one of the biggest flaws of this phone (together with flaps covering the interface sockets).
But it is definitely a way forward and the problems are solely on the computer software side. Which will get attention only when there are enough users demanding for this.
Is it possible to transfer .MKV files with MTP?

Media Center Rom

I am working on a mediacenter Rom and I am looking for suggestions for remote control apps for android to control the Q anyone have any good suggestions on controlling the Nexus Q over bluetooth or wifi. This is my only hiccup for this rom.
How far have you got with the ROM yet?
right now i use Bluetooth mouse/keyboard combined with adb over wifi, do you need more control than this?
I've tried a VNC approach but it was a bit strange doing everything from a browser window, but using VNC I used the VMLite_VNC_Server_1_0_4.apk install on Nexus Q
i use ADB and a BT mouse myself at the moment to navigate through the Q. did you manage to add a different launcher on startup?
BT Keyboard?
The tutorials on this board for getting BT Mouse work fine for me. I can't get BT Keyboard working though. If anyone has had success with that let me know!
---------- Post added at 08:32 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:26 AM ----------
Also I've compiled the kernel to support NFS and CIFS. Recommend adding that to your ROM.
Plex has worked best for me in terms of a consistent playback. This requires Plex media server to be run somewhere else. As its transcoded you can tune the bitrate for consistent playback. I've tried a variety of other players accessing the media via NFS, however none of them can handle full bitrate MKV. Probably it just exceeds the capability of the device.
Romz
My goal is to have a rom others can flash pretty easily and use an existing android device to navigate on the Q.
I'm honestly just figuring out what basic things to throw on the Q for now I might just put a way to flash gapps, but install xbmc.
Heres the process right now that im stuck with now:
-Nandroid restore using the same method I posted for restoring.
(I've been researching the possibility to have a script push and restore the the rom)
-use OTG USB with keyboard and mouse to pair with device
(I've used tablet remote from the play store but the only issue is that the text input does NOT work so searching for things on the store sucks)
But since most people got them at IO the current owners should be pretty confident with adb.

How is the play store working on your ROM? able to download/update?
Are you using OTG USB with a hardware adapted or software? (just wondering)
Why do you need to Nandroid Restore the ROM as opposed to making a flashable zip and installing it over CWM?

1. Haven't tried/ im messing with the build.prop
2. Im using an OTG cable with a USB Hub w/ a keyboard and mouse
3. CWM is a mess right now the text is super tiny on a 1080p tv and I can't get a hold of the dev on rootzwiki to get the source from him so I fix the screen resolution.

Cool
What's ur progress on the ROM so far? What source are you building it from?
Would it be easier to get the Q working using CM and then just add the xbmc app to act as a media centre? Would probably be less dedicated by could utilize the Q's full potential.
Just my 2 cents.
By the way, please don't get me wrong. I fully appreciate your work!

I think the perfect remote software AND the perfect launcher just don't quite exist yet.
One suggestion though... you can probably get the tablet remote to work properly if you tweak the key layout in your rom as I've described in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1892359
You could remap each of the letters to whatever key input is being sent by tablet remote.
Keep us updated on your progress!

I agree better to have a full CM ROM on here than just an app as the front, but I think he is making a a full ROM, but not sure..
Remote
I don't see why some off you are having problems controling the Q I only used adb once to root and navigate to get my stuff ready. Has far has a controller this is the best mouse keyboard combo I found small portable controll type http://www.ipazzport.com/16A.html is a full keyboard plus it already has the android buttons on it. there is a tutorial here how to redirect the home button to call that way goes to launcher instead of the screen saver thing(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1892359). Use nova luncher it wont work with trebuchet from CM9. I have a otg cable with usb hub currently with controller, ps3 controller(yes it works fine with usb cable to play deadtriger) 16gb usb with movies(use stick mount). I apreciate the effort of getting xbmc but I also think a full android rom is better
ohh I forgot use droidmote server is far better than tabletremote
Can't wait see what you come up with OP!

No I don't think you could do that since we don't have a custom kernel, usb mount is built in in android, maybe if you format it fat 32 it could work, good luck. I tried https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.paragon.mounter&hl=en but it won't work.
For keyboard you don't need drivers android reads those input by default even with put root.

If you are still active on this, I suggest we pool resources. If the deal goes through, I'll also have a Gnex to help aid in development in about a week.
OR
Please , please , pretty please still be deving on the Q. It's lonely in Q land and its driving me crazy. :silly:

[Q] USB OTG

hi guys
i have a stupid question
X10 mini support USB OTG?
How?which ROM? which Kernel?
Of doesn't. I'm working on making a kernel that will work but the power will need an external supply, this is for mini pro.

Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
with any luck you will be able to attach a mouse, keyboard, flash drive, hub, game pad, usb hard disk, ect.
Provided you make a proper cable and provide sufficient external power.
If it works you should be able to do all kinds of handy things with the mini pro.

The hardware supports using the correct cable.
But we still need a kernel.

[Q] Backup Amazon Videos?

Is there anyway to backup your legally purchased Kindle videos? The files are split up into thousands of small files with the .atv extention in the system partition. Only Rooted devices can access them.
Is there anyway to back these up? If not is there an app that will dump the RAM of the player so I can take a look at what they are doing and see if that maybe a possible way?
Stupid DRM!

[Q] Import camera media via USB OTG

One of the reasons I got a tablet was so I could transfer my photos from my DSLR Nikon D60 via USB OTG so that I could appreciate them on such a bigger and better display without having to lug around something bully like a laptop.
I was very frustrated when I found out just today that the Sony Xperia Z3TC does not play nice with my camera. Using Nexus Media Importer, troubleshooting tells me that the tablet can't open files from the Nikon D60 (on the flip side, the tablet can at least tell what's trying to communicate with it). Besides Nexus Media Importer, I've tried installing other apps like Stickmount and camera importing apps (eg. RawVision, Rawpal Gallery, RawDroid, and DslrDashboard). None of them work. I'm running on a prerooted stock Sony Lollipop firmware.
My current work around is: importing my photos from the camera to my Nexus 5 (using the stock media importer which pops up as soon as the camera is connected via USB OTG) then transferring them to the tablet using SuperBeam. I hate having to need to do this before I can appreciate them on the Z3TC.. anybody have a solution to this? ?
EDIT: The problem is not that USB OTG does not work, but that the tablet is unable to read the files of a connected device if it is set up to connect as an MTP device and not USB Mass Storage. I want it to work as an MTP device like it does on my Nexus 5.
Hi,
I'm on the same boat as you. I bought this tablet as I was tired of not being able to directly import photos from my DSLR on my older LG G Pad 8.3, and since I know my HTC M8 using almost the same Qualcomm SoC supports USB Host OTG I was pretty sure this tablet also would. However that does not seem to be possible with current roms or kernels. I flashed CM12 in hope of fixing it, with no success I'm afraid.
USB OTG itself works (at least on stock ROM), although MTP does not seem to work. Can you maybe tell your camera to use USB Mass Storage mode?

This seems to be the root of the problem. I don't know if it's the same on KitKat, but the Z3TC cannot seem to run/read accessory devices via MTP on Lollipop. The tablet can read them only if they are set to connect as USB Mass Storage. My old DSLR does not have the option to choose how it is recognized, so no. This is very upsetting.
I have to connect it to my Nexus 5 (because it works as MTP) then transfer them to the tablet, which totally defeated the purpose of me spending money on this in the first place. Is there no way to make MTP work at all?? :crying:
Update:
I just found out today that the stock Android Media Importer does indeed work in Sony's stock Android 4.4.4 KitKat ROM, as I decided to revert from CyanogenMod 12.1. Trying to get back to stock Lollipop and see if it still works. Will update again soon.
Update2: Yep, Sony really messed something up in their Lollipop update. Reading MTP devices via USB-OTG doesn't work. Guess I'll be sticking to KitKat -_-

How About you buy the smallest card reader you can find? I think it's a better solution since you can move around (without the risk of dragging the dslr and falling) comfortably if like you want to show your snaps.

This can be done easily if you have a computer along with you. You can:
1. Directly connect the camera and computer via the cable that came with the camera.
2. View the camera's DCIM folder on your computer.
3. Copy and save the photos on your computer.
4. Copy photos from computer to Android phone or tablet directly.
Here the full tutorial to copy camera photos directly to your Android with OTG:
Step 1. The USB Connection
To start with, directly connect your android phone to the OTG. Then, plug in your camera to the OTG with USB cable came with your camera.
When you connect your camera (make sure it's on!) to your phone, a little USB symbol should show up at the top of the screen.
Step 2. The App
Download CR2-Thumbnailer from Play Store. Then install the app on your Android phone. (If you have a Nikon DSLR, see the NEF-Thumbnailer.)
tep 3. Transfer Photos from Camera to Android
Press the blue camera icon on your phone and navigate down to the folder containing all your images. You can view the thumbnail by default. If you tap an image, it will be open in full screen.
After selecting a few photos, tap the menu button. In the pop-up window, you can either choose "Save" to extract the jpeg and saving it to the phone or select "Backup" to copy all the raw file to your Android phone.
Now, you can view photos on your Android device and share them on social networks immediately. The USB OTG Stick could be very handy while travelling.
More than a way to send photos from digital camera to iPhone, a USB OTG stick can be used to transfer files between smartphones. Just have a try!
