Hi there, I've taken quite a few photos with the mate 10 pro. All on automatic settings, but I'm a bit disappointed with the results... when you zoom in a bit (to peoples faces) they look like oil paintings...
I'm on UK C782 ver .124. bought from cpw.
I'm not interested in fannying about with different modes... I'm talking about taking a picture of your kids on auto promptly... they never stand still for more than a couple of seconds, so you don't have time to set exposure, and iso etc etc !!!!
Haven't had an update in months, so am wondering if there are any updates (that might be impending) that improve the camera a bit... was really expecting better from a dual camera Leica setup...
Hoping for some good news

I had this problem with my Mate 10 pro, the only way I managed to solve this issue was to replace the phone with a Pixel 2 Xl!
You might now be thinking "ok smart arse, why are you trolling the M10P threads?"
As much as i like the Pixel, i'm still kinda interested in the M10P and was hoping a firmware update has sorted the oil paintings. Clearly not hence your thread.
One thing you could try is installing the pixel camera apk, its on the forum section somewhere. Guess I'll still with the pixel!
You can enable RAW images. It will take a JPEG and a DNG file with each click. The DNG is unprocessed, so it doesn't have that aggressive NR, but it takes an extra step to get sharable pictures out of it.
Wish NR level is a setting, but unfortunately, it is not. However, it is completely a software issue, so Huawei theoretically can fix it if they feel that their post processing isn't very good. I just doubt that they will. On the other hand, I've seen hacked APKs for the Moto camera app that allowed changes to NR, so that might be a solution in the future.
I do believe this is a software issue... I think the hardware is capable of much more but Huawei has smoothed things way too aggressively... I'm on pretty old firmware (but that's a moan for another thread) so was wondering if any of the guys with newer firmware noticed any improvements...
I have the same issue on my Mate 10 Pro I was literally shocked because I had the Mate 9 before. the camera of the Mate 9 is better than this Version. i really use snapchat a lot and you just can't get any usable pictures with it. even with the main camera the photos Look blurry and Oily? i am very unsatisfied i hope it will get fixed soon ... greetings from Germany
use 'open camera' with the jpeg quality set to highest

Strange that you should say that...because I bought a pixel XL 2 - because was frustrated by low quality photos and abysmal updates from Huawei (still running Nov security patch ffs)...
Took similar photos with M10Pro and Pixel XL 2, and Pixel photos blew Mate 10's out of the water.. despite being 12MP as opposed to the 20MP of the M10Pro...
But... I do like the feel of the M10Pro, it's a truly gorgeous device..(feels good in the hand !!, ladies... to quote Flossy Carter)... just wish the camera was that bit better... a dude suggested installing open camera... might give that a whirr... but it's a bit naff that you've got to install a 3rd party camera app coz the supplied one is [email protected]

I hear ya, It is a great device, has everything I was looking for, IR blaster, Battery, premium build (feels good in the hand, ladies ) but the camera and the updates just killed it for me. Thought I'd dip back in and see how things are going. I recon Huawei will drop this phone now. all hands on the P20 pump!

It's a bummer, do like the phone, but Huawei have a lot to learn from the big boys... I've had one update in 3 months... utter sh!te from Huawei... for all I know the latest firmware could have the best camera on earth.... but until Huawei push it out at their utter glacial pace, it might as well be on the far side of the moon... Hardware isn't everything, without decent software....
thats why now i dont believe in dxo anymore . 97 score ? really ?

I received two updates in the first five weeks of ownership, so can't complain about that aspect. Different regions are getting different tiers of updates, so I'm wondering whether your local carriers have anything to do with the slow availability of updates (i.e., I'm wondering if Huawei is consulting with UK carriers to decide on what's included in the C782 firmware - I'm on C636 and currently up to version 131).
I hadn't really noticed any issues with photos until I came across your thread, and now see that if I zoom right in, I can see the effects overly-aggressive smoothing. This doesn't really pose a problem for me as I've never thought of a mobile 'phone camera as being good for anything more than "happy snaps," but I can understand that some people want better performance (especially given that this is a major selling point of the Mate 10).
I agree that it's very likely only a software issue; hopefully Huawei will allow their developers to wrest themselves away from the View 10 (which seems to be getting the lion's share of software attention at the moment) for long enough to give us a tangible update for the Mate 10.
So with a pixel 2 when a photo is zoomed in, there is no grainy effect either ? If its a choice between grainy and oil painting, for me both are bad and not a reason to specifically complain about Mate 10.

Totally agree, talking of updates, my Honor 8 is stuck on August 2017 security patch. Neither the staff on phones or twitter have an answer as to wether i'll get an update or what the latest version is.
So glad I have the P2XL. Maybe Huawei will get their act together for the M11?!

Why do you expect a mid 2016 Huawei's budget priced Honor phone to update security patches every month ?
Android should get their act together first before expecting skinned roms to be easy and frequent as stock android. From a global scale each country has their own roms and every time Android comes with up some minor patch (likley not even an important patch) Huawei and Honor all have to deliver update to their 50+ phone models in 80 different countries ? From a realistic view don't expect any change in update frequency from Huawei until Android from the core has changed first.
My mate 10 being flagship has received its 3rd update since December and i am more than happy. Realistically i know after 1 year the updates gets less frequent and when close to release of the Mate 12 , i don't expect any more than once or twice a year update.

where did I say every month? I do expect patches as Honor sold the phone on the understanding it would receive updates for two years. I take your point though. There is something odd going on with Huawei/Honor distribution. Some like yourself seem to be getting frequent updates. Others like myself are being disappointed. Mine were SIM free so should avoid carrier delays.

Think you missed the point... Zoom into the pixel 2 xl photos and they're not grainy. Or over processed. They just look good.. Which I was hoping the 20Mp snapper on the m10pro would achieve also considering the quality of the optics

To say I'm beyond happy with this device would be an understatement. I'm seriously considering selling my Nexus 6P. They're very comparable, and I know how crazy that sounds. They have a ton of similarities, fast camera, good battery life, stock experience.
The battery life on the 6p wins JUST due to standby time. If I use the OPX all day I'll get 4-5 SOT, where the 6P gets 3-4 SOT. But that standby time of the 6p is what makes it a winner.
When OPX gets 6.0, that doze feature will really kick it over the edge.
The only thing that holds me wanting the 6p still is the fingerprint reader and the front facing speakers... before the 6p I had the OP2, that device was horrible (TO ME AT LEAST) Fingerprint reader was crap, and the shape of the device was not comfortable to hold for a while
If you're considering getting the OPX, get it. It's a fantastic device that doesn't feel cheap in the slightest bit. It performs better than the Moto X Pure Edition (2015)

One major negative however is how slippery the OPX is, as I sat there typing that is slid off the couch (which I though was level)
It's like ice slippery. GRIPPY to hold though... while holding you'll never worry about it slipping out of your hands, the glass is way grippier than the iPhone 4/4s

^^This is TOTALLY UNTRUE. The M8 has an excellent camera. The ONLY downside is the pics are only 4MP. So Zoom/Crop totally destroys the image. Low light pics are pretty great too. Better than this camera for sure.
Also, just the M8. The M8 Eye camera sucks.
The M8 also is optimized better than this phone. It just flies.
That being said, I would never buy a used or refurbished phone.
The M8 also has a better front camera. Better lighting and so on. Only 5MP though.
Can someone tell me whats the diference betwen a china version vs internacional version ? since opeplus does not ship to my country, i need to buy it from AliExpress and they wil sell me a china version ?

Worst case I can think of is you'll find it has hydrogen os which you can just easily just root and toss oxygen os on

Read the article yourself. The One M8s weaknesses are noise under low light, where and stabilisation of videos, not colors and detail, both of which come out quite well, even if you lose some accuracy. You have to remember this is a 4MP sensor. It may not compete with the Z2, but its damn good for a 4 MP sensor. Sure, 4MP is not very sharp, but plenty good for social media, as long as you don't crop. The X on the other hand will do nothing in low light. Forget noise, you'll get nothing. Colors on the X are pleasing, though less accurate than the M8. The M8 overall takes better pictures, as long as you don't mind the loss of detail in the smaller sensor.

Get the 1+X 1003-version, it works flawlessly in Europe.
About the camera, i can understand why YoungSkeezy hasn't posted any low light pictures yet because they don't really turn out that good tbh. If you want to get a good camera, buy a Galaxy S6... on the other hand, that's almost the only thing that stands out with the S6
I can just repeat what all the serious reviewers tell you, the 1+X is a great phone for its price. There are better phones out there but not by far.
If you ask me, for the reasonable price the pros are:
- Good looks, slim and build quality
- Decent APU for the phone size, two years old but copes with most tasks
- 3Gig RAM helps quite a lot
- Excellent screen
- Dual SIM or SD-slot
- Close to stock android experiance out of the box
- 3-way notification slider
...and the cons are:
- No fingerprint reader
- No NFC
- Mediocre camera
- Only about 12 or the 16GB of storage is available if you use 2 SIMs

PC Mag did indeed seem to test the Deluxe 5.7"/6/64 version; as for the "bloat":
1: this is a very subjective topic; most reviews are on the contrary, applauding ASUS for slimming ZenUI down, but I don't have the phone yet so can't say for myself. Some might like it, for others it might be too much. Again - the keyword is "subjective".
2: there are a lot of hands on reviews on youtube - do your research; don't base your opinion on just 1 review.
3: Hoping ASUS will release the bootloader unlock tool, custom roms should come quite fast, thus bloatware will no longer be an issue
I certainly don't intend to make a decision on one review.
Regarding YouTube 'reviews', I have found that most spend so much time just flicking the screen back and fourth and up and down...and don't very often offer much. I will likely take a look, but expect better info here in the forums.
I wonder if the reviewer used a note 7 or not because it does the same regarding warnings of: RAM, app closures, battery life, Samsung + and rebooting after being on for 7 days w/o a reboot.
He did. He rated the note 7 as the best smartphone he had ever used.

Nice review if you don't mind the robot voice.
I'm just curious about the camera, on paper it should be good but how often have we seen that translate into crap in real life.
And of course dropping $1300 on a device with a BL that can't be unlocked is against my religion lol..need to see if Asus will be willing to allow an unlock.
And all of this sucks as I returned my note 7 and am now using a 2 year old note 4 so I need a new device ASAP.

Well, it has the same lens and sensor as the Sony Xperia X, and dxomark rated it an 88. That ties it as the highest ranked camera on a smartphone until the pixel is finally on the street, at a whopping 89.

Granted, there is a lot more to how well the camera takes pictures than just the hardware. But, given that the hardware has proven to be top of the line, it means this phone should take amazing images.

I can't say about the 64gb/4gbversion as I got the 256gb/6gb version but as with the Zenfone 2, you can uninstall most of the Asus apps. It's pretty quick and does everything I want.
Battery lasts a good day, tested it with video watching for about 6 hours and that off an OTG device with about 28% left.
Not really a photographer but the pictures are fine. Very good in bright light but fall down a bit in low light, as with most phones.
Call quality is fine, no problem with others hearing me or me them.
As I say, there may indeed be a difference between models but the one I have is great...
Like it a lot and would recommend.
Now that I have my phone, it is obvious that PC Mag review was very biased. This phone is 4.5/5 stars easy.
As i said the before on another thread, this phone is amazing , i got the 64g/6 version, i was going after the 256 one, but sadly it was sold out when i got there, it's no problem though , the version i have is more then enough and with the SD card included makes it more better. i do love the camera quality on this, including the 1920x1080 at 60 FPS, there is also 4k video as well.
And My Carrier signal is strong as well. Just hope now to get some custom roms into this phone when ASUS releases the sources, looking at the zenhone 2, seems they got a lot of it, so i hope the same here. There is things i can't control on here, like the LED notifications (none of the apps don't work from google play) and for some odd reason when you get a text message or e-mail, nothing lights the screen up, though i do get the sound or vibration from it, i had to get an APP for that and it works nicley with that.
Another review that is not particularly overly positive. Especially related to pictures in low light; and battery not all that great.
And one here from Toms Guide with pretty much the samenegative results. But this one goes into a lot more detail and covers a lot of the good in the phone.

Tomsguide review is the closest to explaining the phone in general terms along with it's shortcomings. I don't think it necessarily negative either. I've read and viewed quite a few reviews but my own experience after almost 2 weeks is that its a really good phone with the issues listed in the tomsguide review. For me battery life has been pretty good after bloat removal. Can't wait for root.

All these reviews are old and done before Asus released its Camera updates. For instance, the shutter Is super fast for me and photos look great, but I started out on updated phones. Asus has a another camera update getting ready to get pushed to my Special Edition. It is already available on their site so it should be getting pushed via OTA any day now. Don't judge the camera based on any review done before the US Release date, they are inaccurate. I need to go to the store and do a camera comparison with the other phones.
---------- Post added at 07:54 AM ---------- Previous post was at 07:35 AM ----------
Quoted from one of those reviews "The Bad:?*Poor camera performance for its price, fingerprint reader could not read one of my fingers for some reason, 1080p not ideal on such a large display, Zen UI needs refinements".
First off, the updates must've fixed a whole lot as I don't understand the poor camera reviews and I am sure other current owners would agree.
Fingerprint reader works perfect for me, so it was probably 'I.D.10-T' on the part of the reviewer.
This is my first experience with ZenUI and it is amazing in every aspect. Just a pleasure to use. I instantly installed a few updates for that too though so maybe that is the difference in our experiences.
Lastly, anyone who says you need more than a 1080p screen on a 5.7" phone is an utter moron falling for gimmicks. I have perfect eyesight and I cannot see a single pixel on this screen, no matter how close I look, and this display looks amazing. Anything with a higher resolution would only serve to drain the battery faster. The only possible benefit of higher resolution on this phone would be for VR. If VR is a non-factor for you, then ignore anyone who says you need a better resolution. Now I haven't tried out VR at all yet as I am just waiting to see whether the HTC Vive or Oculus Rift wins, so I don't actually know if you need more than 1080p. Higher resolution always means greater constraints on performance though so 1080p may even be better for VR on phones right now. Like I said though, I will defer to experienced VR users on that. Outside of VR, I assure you, higher than a 1080 resolution on a 5.7" phone will only serve to drain your battery faster.

I agree with that alot, those reviews seems before the update and the phone is amazing as well the camera ability, and what i said before with the 60 FPS recording makes it all more better. I wish i was able to get the speical edition in time , but i missed it sadly. No worries , i'm still happy with the 64/6 with my 128 GB SD Card, though that will be increase in the coming future hehe.

That one chipchick review was definitely dumb. Couldn't read one of my fingers? really? laughable... I have seen reviews of another phone (LG V20) where reviewers and users sh*t-talked it's fingerprint reader, realizing only later that they forgot to take the new protective plastic cover off of the button...
Don't get me started about the 1080p screen complainers... The Super AMOLED screen is one this year's best. What's worse about these reviewers is that phone makers listened to them when they complained last year about preferring 1080p over QHD because they struggled to find a big viewing difference and battery life was better on 1080p. phoneArena's first paragraph mentions that here. At this point it's more about Lazy reviewers and bragging rights than the actual facts.
I do seem to notice the shutter lag and low-light focus hunt on my phone's camera more than other people it seems, and I have the latest updates. Judging by others on here maybe it's just my phone, or I'm taking more low light pics. Quality is otherwise great in normal daytime usage.

Have you tried a 256GB card? The US Asus site says 128GB SD card limit and the global site says a 2TB max SD card size. So the question which is correct or did the US version just get gypped?

Okay so upon investigation, it looks so far as the Taiwanese version (Asus' home country) was the one to get 2TB. US and India are both 128GB on their sites. I'm going to check a few more countries.
Edit: Japan got 2TB too, then again, they don't even have the 64GB SD820 version at all.

When I click the shutter, my screen flashes a tenth of a second later. I never expected instantaneous on a phone though...I upgraded from a note 2 though and don't care about pictures that much. Is it supposed to be instantaneous? Asus just released another update to improve the camera further on their site and it should be getting pushed to our phones soon. Well it has been released for the SD821, but that means the SD820 should get posted soon, if not already. The OTA hasn't been pushed to my phone yet but I read somewhere that it could take a week to push the OTA after they release it.
I would like better pics in low light but I feel that is strictly software and should get better with updates. We will see.
Edit: actually I just went to the camera and it is actually instant when I hold the phone steady.
Huawei did it again and came with a brand new high end device in 2017, this time it's the Huawei P10. So what is your thoughts about this phone? Feel free to discuss anything on this thread ( battery life, experience, help if you need it and more), have a nice day all :good:
I think I'm going to buy the P10 - I've previously owned a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge but found it too big - the P10 Plus is even bigger. Shame, as I'd like the enhanced camera and better screen. The P10 does look pretty nice though and the camera should be excellent. I wonder what colours we'll get here in the UK?

Thanks Soufianski. At the moment I'm more interested in the smaller P10, but who knows! Hopefully I can see them in the flesh and make a decision. The only negative of the Plus for me is the size.

Do you have the phone and got the update or found it elsewere? i'd like to see the software if its available for download.
Got it last night. No idea what has changed as the description was very vague. Only 250MB or so.
At the launch we were told our models had pre-release software and some portrait functions in the camera were coming soon, but I can't remember exactly what.

I know it's early days, but I am finding the battery life on the P10 to be far better than the Mate 9. The Mate 9 obviously has the bigger display, but with such a big difference in battery you might still assume it would have the edge.
I did a phone clone so everything on the Mate 9 carried over, so they're both effectively running the same stuff. However, I'm using the P10 more than the Mate 9 which is often in standby.... so it becomes even more odd.
I will have to do some proper tests, but irrespective of the comparison aspect, I think the P10 battery life is exceptional. The Mate 9 is great too, but this is something else!

You can share some battery stats later here if you like :good:
What do you think about this article : "
That's because there's no oleophobic coating on the actual display of the P10 — at least on the review devices we were given in Barcelona last week. An oleophobic coating may sound obscure and technical, but it's a staple feature of all but the cheapest smartphone screens. This nanocoating, usually applied to the glass during manufacturing, repels oils — like the kind on your face and fingers — and stops the display from looking like it's been used as a pizza slice after you've been tapping, swiping and calling. "
Is the phone a finger print and smudges magnet?

UK. Got mine at the same event as Recombu and Trusted. My review is pending still.
I'm finding the battery excellent, with Doze working fine (some say it doesn't). I did install AnTuTu to benchmark the phone and that seemed to keep running (never seen that before) and caused problems, so I removed it.
I wonder if they've downloaded that?
As I said before, I did a phone clone from my Mate 9, which has a nice setup of apps that are kept running and closed. So perhaps I've tweaked my P10 a lot more than others.
I've even got so used to the new fingerprint sensor that using my Mate 9 (or indeed any phone) now feels odd. Took just one week to master it!
I hope to have my in depth review done any day now. Need to take more photos and will be in London all day tomorrow with the P10, P9 and Mate 9 for comparisons.

I think they did use Antutu. I saw one reviewer showing his battery stats and Antutu was at the top. So i guess That was the one causing the problem.
Yeah, i was thinking that maybe they just had a rogue app causing the drain since everybody uses their phones differently. Because, for me, 20% drain overnight is too much just because Doze didn't work.
I was also a little bummed that they moved the fingerprint sensor to the front but it's not really a big deal.
I eagerly await for your review!
Why should I choose a P10 ? G6 is water resistant, has a bigger screen and makes better photos ?

I have managed in under a week to get really used to the new fingerprint sensor. I always said I preferred it on the back, and this is the only phone I own that has it at the front - but it's VERY easy to get used to. I am sure you would too.
It's ironic that Samsung is moving its fingerprint reader to the back, and who knows what Apple will do.
AnTuTu was causing real problems, and brings up the warning about excessive drain. It shouldn't be doing anything when not running, but it seems to run itself. I wonder if there's something dodgy going on there (always rumours about AnTuTu taking bribes to boost scores). I hope not!

I can't answer that. I really liked the G6 at MWC. Awesome display and feels nice in the hand (not too thick) but I'm not hearing great things about the battery on that, although the reviewers have pre-release models (like the P10) and there was an update yesterday. Too late for some reviewers who already gave their phones back.
Hopefully I'll get a final release model and can compare. I've always liked the camera on the LG's since the G4. The G5 camera was great, but I hated the phone. The G4 had HORRIBLE battery life. The G6 may well be the phone that turns things around for LG, or it may not (for example, LG are pathetic at spending money on marketing). Huawei on the other hand seems to have a bottomless pit of money right now.
Let me start by saying that I am not attacking his character or calling him clueless in general, but he is obviously amateur to when it comes to using Huawei's phones.
I always thought the results he gets from his P30 Pro are way off when compared to the results other reviewers get from their phones, or from the ones I get from my P30 Pro. They're always overly saturated with tons of contrast. And I never understood the reason until I watched his OP 7 Pro vs S10+ vs P30 Pro camera comparison. And as someone who had the S10+ before this phone, and with my wife still owning her S10+, I know that 8/10 times, the S10 will give you the more saturated picture, which isn't the case with Mrwhosetheboss. Then I finally found out why is this the case with his phone, as it turned out that he is using the Smooth Colors option because he thinks, and I believe based on the name of the mode, it generates less saturation while using this mode. He mentioned this twice in his review, so it's obvious he uses this mode all the time, thus why the P30 Pro in this test lost miserably to the S10 and OP 7 Pro, as the P30 Pro pictures were coming out extremely cartoonish with crushed details in the shadows as if you're using a vignette filter all over your pictures.
I believe that while Huawei are taking these so called professional reviewers on cruise trips all over Europe, they also should educate them on how to use their phones so that they won't spread misinformation to the masses without them realizing that they're doing that.
I apologize for the longass rant, and for my average English.

It's a double edged sword. People who purchase a certain phone (usually because they are interested in it) can also often be huge fanboys of a brand/product, saying crap to validate their purchase, ie. "this $800 phone I just purchased is great, otherwise I'd look like a total idiot!"
That and the fact that they usually don't have the option to compare with so many phones since they have to pay for them.
But there are youtubers where you can easily spot the fact that it's a paid review in some way. Money weighs more than integrity for most people.
Of course

The best thing to do before buying any phone, is watch few reviews from the YouTubers you trust, then head to reddit and XDA to read more from those who bought the device and actually used it.
He always gives positive critics on new products and then after some months stop support his opinion because he don't paid any more. Remember this, when mate 30 pro will launch he would say how incredible camera it has(even if it will have same camera as p30 pro)

I doubt he even updated his firmware. Most reviewers didn't hence why their videos are extra reddish.
Ultimately i guess, waiting a month or two for real reviews on xda or reddit would be the best.
But hye, most of us can't wait , get it on day 1 and regret about it later  Im quite happy with my p30 pro since updates are quite frequent and most of the color corrections are fixed.

I agree. The S10+ was the first flagship phone I have ever sold less than one month after owning it, and that was because I knew no matter what Samsung does, their lowlight photography won't improve drastically with software updates.
The P30 Pro was also a bit frustrating when I first got it, but from my experience with the P20 Pro, I knew Huawei was going to address the issues and more, and I am extremely satisfied with all the improvements Huawei has brought with their updates.

While I love my P30 Pro, I'm not going to be biased towards Huawei and give them a pass on something that is obviously not working, or at least not doing anything they promised us it will.
As you can read from the responses on that thread, the vast majority of those who tested my experiment of covering the tof sensor, are still reporting that either way, they came with the same results whether it's the camera app or the AR Measure app.
I'm on .153, and I tested everything, from portrait shots to aperture mode, to night shots, and also low light scenarios, and still, there is ZERO difference between the pictures I get when the tof is covered or uncovered.

Try covering it when using thining /re shaping during video?
I think this goes for a lot of those 'celebrity reviewers' on Youtube, most of them are clueless and to be honest quite stupid. They simply review the unit to make money, if what they say and do is wrong seems to be of no importance. Personally i never watch those videos anymore, they have become more of a joke than something to take seriously.
/ Magnus
The P30 Pro's camera capabilities have come a long way if you factor in the improvements from .153 (and now .162 supposedly).
If some of these YT can ensure they're running the latest available firmware, it'll definitely help paint a clearer and more accurate picture but I understand this isn't always possible because of the timings of the video.
Coming from .124, I definitely noticed an improvement but not convinced if all these reviewers are also on it.
yes he is..you can see his latest review for op7p vs n10p vs p30p. seems obvious he is doing for the sake of money instead of real passion
My P30 pro has almost the same issue. Brown skin tones are applied to a heavy contrast effect making them look unnatural (not on smooth color)
This to an extent of making me want to sell the damn thing. I'm assuming it has to do with RYYB sensor. My kid ends up looking like decorated chocolate while the other one (who is on the fairer side) always comes out looking far better and natural.
But then again, Samsung sucks at snapping subjects unless they're completely still, which is next to impossible with kids.
My other gripe is not being able to switch to HDR with just a click instead of having to swim my way through the menu.
I'm hoping software fix is around the corner.
So Mr. whosetheboss comparison isn't all that wrong...his skin tone will ALWAYS be oversaturated, and I believe this is to do with the sensor.

Having had the phone a few days now I've had time test the camera properly. I've noticed it tends to soften images, this is particularly noticeable with pets highlighted in the fur.
Coming from the pixel 4 it's pretty disappointing that it can't compete in a lot of instances.
The first few pics I took were absolutely awful. I updated the software and this improved the camera considerably. What's the chances of the camera software improving with further updates? Anyone coming from other Samsung devices that's had the camera improve with updates?
Really love everything else about the phone and don't really wanna return it.

I've just got it now thanks, I'll have a play with it. What are the configs for?
Coming from a Pixel 4a the camera quality is VERY disappointing if you're using your cell phone camera to take pictures of anything that isn't a non-moving well-lit object. Lots of detail is lost especially when the subject is a person - facial features are smoothed out and that makes the hair look really blended together. Disabling the scene optimizer seems to help but you can't disable this in Portrait mode.
I have GCam installed but haven't had a chance to tweak the settings. It's better than the stock camera but........ coming from a $350 phone to an $800 phone and I still need to tweak camera settings???? Can't really express how disappointed I am in the camera quality and there is stock post processing is almost impossible to turn off.

I believe they are "settings" that users share to give best performance in certain situations, I might be wrong though, that's my interpretation of them.

I just seen another post and realised that the "configs" folder needs to be renaed to "configs7" to work, I have only found N10Z4 config to work so far, others crash the app.
Here's the link from the other post by Beserker15 https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/f/settings09/
Hi there. My camera is truly appalling, and significantly worse than the S10 I traded in. All photos on any setting are grainy and noisy. I can't get a good quality photo from a metre away in good light. Does anyone know if this is a software issue they are going to release a fix for? If not, I'm going to send it back I think.

Mine was like this right out of the box. The first software update improved it a lot but it's still very disappointing.

My thoughts exactly, I'm sending it back this week. I was gonna go for the ultra instead but I asked the question over there and it seems while it's a step up from the regular S21 it's still very disappointing. In just gonna keep the pixel 4 till something decent comes out. Probably the next pixel now.

The next actual "high end" pixel that comes out (not some mid-range device) my note 10+ is going bye bye. Never gonna look back at Samsung again.
The camera is good for outdoor. These pictures have been shot from approximately 150 meters [hand-held]. Please see it as a guide for you.
How's the audio zoom working in videos? Does the audio actually zoom in that direction or does it just get louder?
Agree the camera/app is disappointing. Hopefully they get it improved soon

Every new phone nowadays does a good enough job outdoors in daylight. The slew of problems with Samsungs camera come right after that. Especially indoors. Shutter lag and HDR always on no matter what you set it to just kill the camera. Samsung desperately needs ZSL.
