SHould I get this or XZ Premium? - Sony Xperia XZ1 Questions & Answers

Currently, there arent that many options for "cheap" Snapdragon 835 phones.
And only this phone and XZ premium have a decent Custom Roms.
Or should I just wait for Snapdragon 835 devices to get cheaper? THe 845 devices are around the corner.

Umm, Project Treble might give better solution on XZ1? I'm no dev but it should work easier for dev. The shame thing is that Sony phones are few and devs might have no interest in it anymore. But at least faster update might be on the cards because of Treble compatibility.

To OP, imo, with Treble is native on XZ1, might be more enticing to try in the long run. But in the end it's about what fits on your hands and what's the device feel for you. My XZ1 is only 2 days, previously deciding between this and XZP, and i chose XZ1 because of single metal build and easier disassembly, plus it's still not much bigger compared to my old mi4c, only taller.

Sony is not the best for custom rom...
One plus, HTC, Samsung are better for this.
BTW Xz1 is a good device for stock use.

Sony has good stable stock rom. We have custom roms carbon os and aosp.

Better is a thing that is just based on a personal opinion. Samsung for a example is horrible when it comes to real custom ROM support thanks to lack of a fully Open Source archive for their Exynos SOC:s, which forces people basically to use cooked & modified stock ROMS 9 of 10 times.
And so on.

It is partially true as just by throwing an eye on the different Custom Rom threads and you will see the huge difference between what is available.
Xz is good in term of cookers and rom
Xz1 is not
HTC is good (my preferred cooker Lee)
Samsung, you are right lacking open source but some rom are running well
One plus is good also
Excuse if I use "better" not appropriately (UK is not my natural/born language)
Nevertheless, I personally really enjoy xz1 as very very stable and good performances

I am very pleased with my XZ1. I'm debating the XZ2 Premium.

Galaxy Alpha vs. A5 longtime support from dev´s

Hi there,
i am about to buy a new phone sooner or later.
My old SGS III (I9300) is still running quite fine (thx to the dev´s in here), but after 2,5 years i looks kinda awfull by now because of the bad build quality (cheap plastic crap) of the body.
So the next should have better build quality = metal frame if pos.
So i figured out 2-3 possible phones:
Samsung Galaxy Alpha or Samsung Galaxy A5 (wont be released in the US/Canada as far as i know)
As an alternative:
Phicomm Passion
The most important point for me is the longtime community support from CM,Omni, etc. This tbh is the only reason i still use and can use my quite old S3. And i can´t even tell you how much i hate Touchwiz and crap UI´s like this.
Might it be easier to get a good working CM for the A5 because it will have a Snapdragon 400 or 410. I often read about Samsungs Exynos making it hard to develop for.
So do you got any thoughts what device will have the better community support? Yeah crappy question i know, just wanna hear your thoughts
greetings from germany

A5 is midranger sd410 , don't go for it .
U can't compare Alpha with A5 , go for Alpha / iphone 5s/i6 / Wait for S6 / htc M9
Touchwiz of Alpha is fine , i had moto G before and hated stock android very much .

Yeah i know the the Alpha has a stronger SoC, and is intended to be a flagship device. But tbh as long as the system runs smooth i dont give a damn at antutu scores and dont even play any games.
But i think the best precondition for a good longtime support from the community is a high popularity and alot of sold devices. Atleast i think thats the reason the SGS3 for example, is still up to date.
I dont really care about the support from the producers like Samsung, HTC, LG etc. They all do quite a bad job at holding their devices up to date. (Sony might be a exception) The community does this job alot better in my eyes.
As far as i can see it the Galaxy Alpha didnt sell this great and the active dev´s and roms are quite rare (sadly).

For long and good community support, this device is not it for various reasons example high price, battery performance, uncommon and exynos chipset.

I run a CM developer build and my battery lasts for 2-4 days. I never had a device with such good battery life. The exynos chipset is great, cause the modem is separated from the main system. They don't share any memory. So the modem can't access the android filesystem.
same hire,2-4 days moderate use
our phone is optimised as iphones
normaly coz we dont have every week to flash custom roms hehehe
rorian & leripe are quite right,
if you check Alpha's sub forum u will notice that is already half dead
that's sad cause Alpha is a truly strong device, will an excellent design.
It has its flaws -as all devices have-, but that's expected.
The phone went live on the market with a high price, because was directly compared with S5,
so customers expected the price to be lower than s5.
The competition was already high in this range with cheaper models.
Then finally sammie put the tombstone on the device by announcing the end of production.
The device is good , im happy to own it, and i would buy it again for sure, but it hurts when im
clicking in xda and see no interesting from the community, i blame 101% samsung for this, EPIC marketing/scheduling fail.
Sorry if my englisch isn't that good.
I'll get my Alpha tomorrow. I think the forum is quite dead at the moment because everyone is waiting for the release of the cyanogan mod custom rom. I hope that with the release of CM sooner or later (maybe with lollipop) more and more different custom roms will be made for our device.

You hate it, i love it, and the other way around. Just personal preferences. What i hate about Samsuns is just their update politics. They even got probs keeping their flagships up to date for longer than 1 year and even if they do, the updates are delayed for months.

Are they even working on an official cyanogemod 12 for alpha or is there any dev in here working on an unofficial port yet? If yes it would be great news and it would be a big argument to buy it over the A5.

That is funny I gave up my nexus 5 for the Alpha and I cannot be any happier, and Im a developer developing games for android and they run very nicely on my alpha also looking forward to the Lollipop update.
Here's Antutu Benchmark for Galaxy A5
I've just come from iPhone 6 then note 4 and then decided I wanted a smaller device but android so I purchased the alpha after looking into buying the a5 the alpha is a better device by far. I'm very happy with this only wish it was abut heavier and so slot that is all but for now I'm enjoying this little beast

I haven't seen anything yet....I sure hope we get some development.
This is too good of a phone to be stuck with the stock software.
I'm with you. I think it's an amazing phone for the price and worth way more than $$. I hope to see some recoveries or ROMs soon. I've had mine just a month and I love it but I'm getting antsy to put a new ROM on it.
I think we might see something in the near future, people are probably sketchy over a device with these specs at this low price range. This phone is amazing and I still can't believe the price. I too am antsy about flashing a custom rom and running framework on the device.

No, it's faster than the Honor 5x, I have both and I can tell you the Blu Vivo 5 is the better device, it's more than noticeably faster and I don't think
it's just from the 720p screen, and the screen on the Vivo is way better and and the 5.5 screen size you really can't tell any difference resolution wise, the Vivo 5s screen is
at least 2 times brighter and more vibrant.
I think the issue with Mediatek is they don't release the kernel source code, no kernel no custom roms etc.
CM 13 on this device would be incredible.
I noticed that the vivo XL page in XDA had several custom Roms posted for vivo XL. Considering that the only difference between the XL and the 5 is the ram and storage space... Do you think the XL roms would be compatible with the vivo 5?
Does anyone think that a ROM from Gionee S6 would help, and have CWM or that?
Is there a source released for this phone? I just ordered it and would like to build a kernel for this device

Will the Mate 10 have a True and active Dev and Mod support from developers?

I'm really interested in getting this phone, I have skipped the Note 8 until I see what this phone brings, and from what I saw at the presentation I looks like an AWESOME phone, but when I look at past Huawei flagships (mate 9, P9, etc) almost non-existing major updates, custom roms support and mods I start thinking if paying a premium price for a phone like this its really worth for a person like me who likes to play around with rooting, modding and installing custom roms in my devices or should I play safe and get a Samsung or Pixel device.
No. Do not buy Huawei if modding is important.
Non existent with previous mate 9 and barely with mate 8.
Across the board, it's not getting easier

To be honest you are better off not getting any flagship if you like modding. The pixel is a pain to dev for to the point that many devs are not getting the new pixel or even supporting it. Samsung well we all know that dev support for that is a joke.

If modding is your thing then I would look at something like one plus. Things to avoid are devices with dual partition setup. The pixel showed how much devs dont want to deal with that.
Things to look out for are things like kernel source being up to date which I hate to say knocks 90% of the China based OEM out of it. Maybe the Euro version of samsung devices might be OK but even they get little to no real devs support. I would look around the site. See what devices have real support. No I am not talking about tons of los based roms. That is not development. I mean real development with system mods and hardware tweaks.

This I agree with but many of the OEM are opting out of sdcards ever since google removed all the code fore native sdcard support from android years ago. But to be hones 64gb is more then enough for a mobile device. Mix that with some common sense (backing up stuff. No I dont mean cloud backup lol)

Why not? You can get systemless root (Exynos) or TWRP installed classic root (Snapdragon) for Note8.
Sure Knox and/or SafetyNet gets tripped, but that's the price to pay for rooting.
But you can root current flagship phones and there's plenty of modding community for Note8.

Samsung based roms are not development. Samsung devices have sucked for development for years. This is why main stream developers don't get that device.
Ok, thanks for the info. I haven't followed the scene. Just installed a good LO fork on my Note3 and it is working wonders (sans NFC and GPS/camera performance is generic).

Yes. The 6p (minus the battery issues) is good for rom development. It will get support from 3rd parties for at least another 2 years.

Problem with OP (I switched from OP5 to IP7+ just recently because I kept hearing rumors that OP5T/OP6 might come out and I was afraid the value might drop to a point where re-sale value is no longer profitable..IP7+ is awesome in many ways, but my initial goal was getting LG V30 but now it seems Mate 10 is much wiser choice because of its awesome screen to body ratio + 16:9 aspect ratio which currently IMO is way better than 18:9/18:9.5 considering full app support, including youtube and so on) is that it does not have its own identity - its basically an iphone clone design wise and with it you look like a wannabe iphone user . Its awesome in performance but that identity thing sucks + they recent actions where they discontinue a model even before 6 month span is just plain ridiculous (OP3 to OP3T and then OP3T to OP5 all done within 1 year)..

Tell that to the fact that they offer how to build aosp for their devices, have worked with developers on it as well as pretty much made the theme engine that susbstratum works off of.
Will there be loses. Sure but that is the difference between aosp and using code made for the device. You don't always get all the features of the device with aosp. But that is not the point of using aosp. It's to learn.

Buying a Z5 Compact to use with LineageOS - good or bad idea?

Out of all of the devices out there that support LineageOS, the Z5 Compact looks the most appealing to me, because of the good audio quality, nice design/build, and reasonable size.
But is it foolish to purchase a Z5C with the intention of using it to run a custom ROMs?
Are people here using custom ROMs purely as a stopgap until they can get a newer phone that supports Oreo? I don't need or want the latest, greatest hardware, but ever since buying my first smartphone (a Nexus) I've become accustomed to using the latest software. Is the Z5 Compact a dead end in that regard? Or is it likely that I'll be using Android P and Q on this device in the next couple of years?
"But Strobelite, if you're worried about being able to use the latest version of Android, why don't you just get something by Motorola? Those have a healthy, active developer community. Or, you could just be a normal person, and buy a new phone."
If it runs GApps, I won't use it
Audio quality is important to me
The Motorola phones are ugly, in my opinion
Hi, since a few weeks I'm running on LineageOS 14.1 with my z5 Compact and I don't miss the stock rom at all. I didn't test all features yet (e.g. MHL), but I'm very satisfied until now. It's stable (didn't encounter any random reboot), fast and battery life is ok for me (I use Amplify and Greenify with xposed).
I only can recommend this and if you want to run without GApps, this is the way to go. I'm using Yalp store and it's even faster updating my apps than the original Play store.
Phone has FM Radio, SD card slot, fast and accurate GPS and enough power (LOS doesn't seem to run as hot as the stock rom (you can choose between performance profiles), so it's another plus for me).
Just try it and see if it works for you.
The only thing that annoyed me is the camera, the quality is just bad and sometimes it doesn't focus (or too late)
If you dont miss the camera then yes.

I can understand your problem but of course it is imo.
Z5 line has never been widely supported by developers and the Compact is the one with less roms now. You can imagine what kind of future it would have.
Luckily in the past we had great guys who made stock rom root/mods/DRM restoration but the AOSP scene is completely different. As always you lose some features with non-stock roms, usually Camera quality (because you lose closed source vendor optimizations/software) and minor ones.
There will be probably 1 or 2 roms for future android versions (thanks to projects like SLim rom, PAC, Resurrection,...) but there are already few mantainers, especially for the Z5c, and some aosp roms are also unofficially maintained by one person...
Sony lost people (and developers) appeal after the Z3 line and this gets reflected in custom rom support for the newer Xperia lines. If you really want the latest OS on your phone for the next 4 years you should go for something else imo.
Z5c is still great device, refined materials and with good battery but don't expect a forum support like Samsungs, Huaweis,... Unfortunately the old days where flagship phones were < 4,5" are gone.
Maybe you already know it but GSMarena has a great phone-finder search engine which can help you refine your search for compact products.

Poco tough questions

Hello
I've got some strange and somewhat tough questions or maybe not?:
1. I've seen a lot of POCO F1 photos and I'm not exactly sure if it has a good body around it so that I could not touch the screen by accident with that hand which is holding the phone while the other is writing SMS. If You need a comparison Samsung S5 and A8 2018 was good at it and they are what I would like the POCO F1 to be.
2. Is the awsesome CPU the only good pieace of hardware in that phone. How about RAM and storage speed?
3. Will POCO br treated like Mi phones or like Redmi phones?
4. How many Android upgrades wil it receive?
5. Is it Project Treble fully compatible?
Thanks and please reply what You think
The SD845 is not a CPU, it's an SoC comprised of many components. This includes Kyro CPU clusters, DSP, Adreno, x20 modem, LPDDR4x support (RAM), and UFS 2.1 support.
Third & fourth question is impossible to answer, the company hasn't made a formal promise. This phone will cannibalize their sales, so who knows.

Sorry, it's a SoC, too much IT around me xDD.
Can You tell me what do you mean by saying that this phone will cannibalize their sales? (My English is bad)
How about question no 1?
Why would u buy one of their 20+ phones they have available now, when this one is so cheap?

To answer the unanswered questions
Poco f1 will be treated like a poco phone.
They promised Android pie.
Any phone that comes with android 8 pre installed should be 100% treble compatible.
Peace

Hello
I've got some strange and somewhat tough questions or maybe not?:

1. I don't think that will be a issue during normal use... It will be issue in any phone of You use it without a proper grip or while typing and holding with the same hand...
2. In simple words RAM and storage should also be really Good... Overall performance of this device will be really Amazing so need not worry about RAM or storage speed bottleneck...
3. It will be totally different from Mi and Redmi... Poco will be independent in software and development while sales and services will be carried out by Xiaomi...
4. That's a question that needs time to be answered but since it is independent from Mi and Redmi, it should atleast get 2 (Android P and Q) android version updates (in My view) but it will surely get Android Pie as it was announced... MIUI update should be coming for it for atleast 2 years (usually 3)...
5. Since it is released with Android Oreo, it is Treble Enabled...

1. Poco F1 is amongst the many other phones which boasts of so called "bezel less" body. So clearly your question may be asked for any such phone.
2. Apart from CPU, POCO has a very good GPU, LPDDR4x RAM and UFS 2.1 Storage. So no it's just not the CPU alone.
3. POCO will be treated like a separate phone series and we might see POCO F"2" in coming days. (Realme 1 followed by Realme 2).
4. Pie has been promised by Xiaomi and the phone might just see Android Q as well. Cannot really comment on that.
5. Any phone launching with Android Oreo or later out of the box has to be Project Treble compliant so YES.

2. Apart from the latest generation SOC, the ram and storage is also top notch. It has lpddr4x ram and UFS 2.1 storage so pretty fast and latest gen again.
3 & 4. With kernel source already released, camera2api enabled by default and bootloader unlocked who cares about company software support. We have excellent devs who will make this device fly for a long long time, incidentally the company has promised android P update in the 4th quarter and android security updates regularly.

WOW Thanks of thinking of me so high but with all do respect I have to disagree. Doing reaserch is not enought to become an expert. In my opinion You have to do some practise: configre many different phones, flash custom roms, service phones, try different apps and be an accual DEV.
THANKS to Ruvy, SingularityHRT3, sanjay0501
as I dont know how to reply on each reply

I do quite a few of them, just feeling bad that I am incapable of building ROMs or by any other such (development) means contributing to the community...
You can use multi-quote to reply to many posts at once...

Let it go... I just got My hands on the device yesterday when it arrived... Its really Good... Software seems to be not yet optimised properly so it should perform far Better in a few weeks... The rounded edges are a little to big, certain UI and app elements seem to hide behind it...
Agree to that, the rounded edges at the bottom area were certainly unnecessary, so far this is the first annoyance with the phone
