Anybody with battery replacement experiences (good?) - Moto Z Questions & Answers

I am fed up with the battery life on my Z Droid. From taking it off the charger at 7am I might get to 5pm with not much use (no games, only email and browsing) and if I make calls and stuff the battery life is even worse.
Not help from Motorola and they are not going to replace the battery under warranty so I am going to go 3rd party. I wonder if anybody has had good experiences with battery replacements, where did you get it from and how is the phone now?
Looking at iFixit and some YT videos it doesn't seem like a hard job so any shop who can replace an iPHone battery can surly replace the Moto Z one. It seems all you need is a heat gun to remove the screen some tweezers to remove cables and not even a screw driver.
For example here is one that looks reasonable

Thanks

I ordered one from AliExpress ( an original replacement ) and I'm waiting for it to arrive and replace the old and dying one ( I will probably make a thread when it arrives, maybe even with step by step instructions ).
As for the tools, heat guns are also rather cheap on the site ( ~ 10$ ) so the whole battery replacement (along with brand new tools ) should cost less than 35$ in total ( 20$ for the battery, 10$ for the heat gun and around 1$ for those small repair tools (from which you only need the lever and "guitar picks" ) ) .
And if you can't do it yourself, make sure that the person repairing it for you knows what they're doing since the front sensors can be somewhat easily damaged.

Why does Lenovo/ moto will not repair it under warranty ( in Europe you get 24 month warranty even for the battery).
If you want you can try to buy a 3000mAh battery (not original) and get even more battery life.

Have you tried the 3000mAh battery? Do you know if it improves much? I'm barely getting 1h30m of SOT on a full day with the original battery, with less than 8 months of usage. Somedays I can't get past 1h SOT, dying at 50-55m.

Bought a similar battery for a Huawei Mate S (original 2620mAh vs. non-original 3100mAh) Link: goo.gl/TseQRQ.
In case of the Mate S I can tell, that the new 3100mAh lasted a lot longer than the orignial battery. But like a lot items on aliexpress, you can't trust the information that the seller is providing. So you have to try it by yourself.

1. I had a good experience, but my contact /repair store has some contact that could get it for about the same price on eBay.
2. He however did kill the screen in the process (had to replace that too, you really need that iOpener)
Battery is better, but I still need to use a Mod for it to last till 9pm. (it used to die around 3-4pm with dergraded battery)

Sounds good. The upgrade doesn't look too hard for a reputable repair place. Even iFixit gave it a 7/10 for fixability which is pretty good and they did not mention the fragile nature of the sensors.

Well in the end I got this battery
https://goo.gl/UBC4Pt
It's 3000mAh so it might be better than my current one or it could be just a dud! I guess I will see a few weeks or so
There's a bunch on Ebay but since I don' t live in the US most won't ship internationally, presumably because of LiOn batteries? Aliexpress don't care

@lchiu7 Did you replace your battery? If you did, what are your impressions?

Still waiting for the battery to arrive from Aliexpress.

Oh i thought you already had it
Please give us your thoughts once it arrives and you use it a couple of days

Just arrived. Now trying to work out which place I should ask to have it replaced.
Based on comments on the Moto Z forum at Motorola, some folks have had good luck with a full factory reset so I might try that first before I do the battery upgrade

How did the batteries work out for everyone? I broke my screen doing it - ended up taking it to a repair shop and they couldn't repair it in 3 weeks so I ended up just rebuying a new Moto Z for $300 from Amazon.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B075H9J1KM/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I used that battery.
I will say, be EXTREMELY CAREFUL taking the screen off, the LCD is extremely thin, so if you pull the ribbon cable too much, it's bye-bye LCD.

Batteries are alright. Still meh battery life

I have done the replacement with a original battery a few months ago...The old one had merely 1200mah left.
I strongly suggest, you buy an original battery (GV30, LG Chem)! From my own experience on other phones, those 3000mah batteries are junk and supposedly will not provide the 3000mah or be even worse in degrading than the original battery. You simply can not put more energy in the same battery form factor.
In terms of replacement, a hairdryer was sufficient enough to soften the glue in the moto z, while using a wet cloth to protect the display from the heat. I used a very thin wire to first lift up the upper glas panel on the back to then provide pressure to the front glas with a pen through a small hole near the front flash. you have to heat the front panel very carefully and use something like a credit card, to lift it up step by step. Then carefully detach the cables and remove the battery with some force, as it is glued down. For the reassembly i suggest to remove the original glue pads on the frame and use Zhalida B7000 glue. I first tried to glue it back together with the original glue pads, but the front panel would not stick good enough and lift up now and then. When using B7000, you have to use sufficient glue to make up for the height of the original glue pads, but be careful the glue does not flow and stick to your volume/power buttons (this happened to me and it was a nightmare to remove and clean those buttons). Let it dry for a minute before pressing the front panel back into place and then put some books or something heavy on the phone and let the glue dry a few hours, before you remove excessive glue at the front panel margins.

It worked out great for me following the previous Android update screwing my battery. Get Turbo Power Mod if you can. Coupled with that, it should take you through a day without any problems at all

[Q] Verizon DNA rant (sorry ahead of time)

The plastic charging door broke on my phone, and Verizon wants me to ship my device back for this instead of sending me the little piece of plastic, with a possible $200 charge for abuse? The battery life is not great on the device I use it all day so I have to charge it often, I can't stand when MFG's put these little covers on but the phone looks like crap without it.
Anyone else have this and a better way to get the little charging door or a case recommendation so I can't see it? I love the otterbox stuff but both cases are too bulky for the DNA in my opinion.
Most people ripped of that little flap. If you get a new one it will probably come off again, so just keep your phone.
As far as cases, idk. I keep my phone naked.

Agreed, I prefer it naked as well, but this thing looks bad without the door, the phone has such clean lines!
When and if mine comes off or falls apart, I will be making another one that's completely removable, basically like a rubber plug fabricated to fit snugly into the slot when I'm not charging carefully formed to prevent damage or binding.
My rezound didn't have a cover, and I take good care of my devices but in my home and work environment I'm surrounded by dust and dirt. My DNA inside would get lots of stuff like dust and even tiny pieces of hay.
My OCD would get the best of me, and every time I would connect the charger I would think of dust and airborne particles being abrasive to the micro USB port.
It can be annoying to have to use a tool each time I remove the cover but I'm really glad its there. I realize how frustrating it can be though.

My door broke off as well, and I only remove it to charge while on the road away from my wireless charger. I just happened to snap it off while taking the door off, so I still have it, but it has come away from the phone's body.
A monumentally stupid design choice that was clearly done to induce the purchase of wireless chargers.

I think the funny/sad thing here is the immediate claim from Verizon to me on the phone that it's probably abuse. I asked the support rep if he had seen the plastic hinge before. Abuse, total crap when it breaks in a month... if it had a little stronger battery it probably would have taken me two months for it to wear out!!!
Mine broke off so know I just stick it in. Can't help but wonder if its necessary to meat the IPX-5 water protection?

Same thing happened to me with the plastic cover. I called Verizon told them it fell off while trying to open it to charge the phone they sent me one and said I wouldn't get charged the fee for damage. I received the new one and have not been charged any fee and its been a few months so don't worry about them charging you if you replace it.

For people having poor battery performance - make sure you check your usage statistics! For example, there is a bug with Latitude where it will constantly ping for location, so Maps will take up a huge amount of battery life. Check and make sure there aren't any programs or servicing taking up an unusual amount of battery life. For me, battery life has been amazing once I fixed the Maps issue (there is a thread somewhere if anyone has any specific questions on that).
I've had my DNA for less than 24 hours and my battery door came off already haha. It's okay though, doesn't look that bad without it and I work in an office so I don't see any immediate danger to the device. Love it.

Sounds like maybe you should take it back and get an iPhone? Seriously, I have the DNA as well. Any phone that has the rubber door flap is going to break, period. Just leave it off. You can resolve battery life by rooting it, and loading a ROM/Kernel that has better battery support.
Lastly, in re: the way it looks, the case, etc. Sounds like you're just unhappy. Try getting a phone you like better? They provide a 15 day return period for folks just like you.

battery life life time

can i ask how long in general does the z ultra last, as someone on the official sony forum posted that it might last 1 to 2 years, as in my country they decided not to bring this phone for sale as it has no market for it
i was wondering is it really difficult to replace the battery by myself in case it becomes defaulted
So we meet again
I don't know. My guess is that we'll see a drop in battery life in about 10-12 months, and it'll keep dropping from there. This heavily depends on the quality of the battery, but it's too early to tell if we have a good or bad one. Changing the battery might be rough (since it's waterproof), but it shouldn't be impossible. Just note that it might not be waterproof after you've changed the battery yourself (and your warranty will explode into one million pieces of nope from Sony's service centers)
hahahahah chill my friend
yeah well i saw a youtube video its says z ultra where he just used a hair dryer but i am not sure as it does not look to me like the z ultra more like the xperia z.
maybe by that time we will know if people on this forum changed their battery by themselves, u are lucky because in Israel they will not bring this phone so initially i don't have warranty, i hope it will be easy cause this is the first time I want to stick with a phone for more than 2 years.
so i hope my battery will not fail me

Replacement Battery Flap

Hey everyone,
So today I noticed that the black rubber that is under the battery flap of my phone is starting to peel off. It isn't too terrible yet, but I do use the waterproof feature of my phone regularly and I don't want to jeopardize my phone if this peels off. Does anyone know where I can get a replacement cover? I checked eBay and didn't have much luck so I am hoping some of you guys may know of another site that supplies the OEM parts.
Thank you!

Yeah a common thing on these phones (USB cover door). I have not found any yet either, AliExpress had some but were pulled or ran out (just checked again they are back now, so AliExpress has them again --
https://www.google.com/search?q=Z3v+usb+cover+&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8). Better link -- http://www.aliexpress.com/item/for-Sony-Xperia-Z3V-D6708-OEM-SIM-Card-Micro-SD-USB-Charging-Port-Dust-Plug-Waterproof/32430237429.html
I had to take my (wife's phone as well) phone back to VZW and get a replacement phone due to this. If your phone is within the one year warranty go to VZW store and show them they will get you another phone.
I did a test and if you apply a tiny amount of Vaseline on the seal it will work better as well as make a more watertight seal, just lightly coat the rubber seal, good idea to do all doors like that, I have a product called "dielectric grease" that works even better, use sparingly, can get at auto parts store.
So glad this is an easy purchase if I need it. Thanks.

Agreed, Sony should let people have access to their supplier. But then again Sony is greedy and wants the revenue from out of warranty repairs.

Thankfully, I was raised in an Italian household and in Europe, the comma replaces the decimal point. So if something was say $3.50, in Europe, it would be written $3,50.

Glad you found one on Ebay.
My wife and I visited the VZW store today her usb cover seal tore again and I am still trying to get a good replacement for mine, both refurbished phone VZW sent out were junk, one the camera had a dab of something under glass on the lens and the other one the display was brown in tint or hue, if I don't get a good refurb in the next few tries I am going to just buy a cover and be done with it.

When you get your next refurbished device just remove the flap that you need from it. Just be careful when pulling it out and hold the white connector ribbon really good so that your fingers don't slide down it and rip the cover off (from the white piece).

There's nothing dishonest about that at all. They are sending you a replacement phone expecting to get one back without a flap, correct? I bet they would even give you permission if you explain that you aren't happy with the quality of the refurbished devices. The flaps are easily interchangeable without any repercussions.

No worries man. I'm glad there are still honest people out there with a conscience. I would suggest you to ask them though so there is no question about what you are doing. I'm fairly certain that they will allow you to. I would ask technical support rather than a normal CSR though. They seem to have more information. I've asked similar questions about refurbs and they are usually willing to do what it takes to make the customer satisfied (within reasonable limits). No harm in asking right?

Wow, pricey huh?
Yeah the price has gone up from $9 since I purchased, but still totally worth it. I got some wireless chargers and am only going to use those from now on.

Kit/Tools needed to replace 6p battery

I'm thinking im going to take the plunge and try and replace the battery in this thing. Battery life is certainly sub par 14 months in with moderate to heavy use. Does anyone have any recommended kits or places to buy the tools needed for the job? I've looked at various tear downs and it doesn't seem terribly hard to do. Is the stuff from iFixit any good?

I bought this one and seems to have all pieces... A smartphone repair tool kit on Amazon will be ok, they are the same for every smartphone I think

The main things you'll need is a small phillips head screwdriver, a precision razor blade, and a heat gun or hair dryer to heat the back. The rest can be done with old gift cards or playing cards. You may also want to order a new back cover with the top and bottom strips if you are picky about small dings. It's difficult to remove the back without leaving small dings at the injection site of the razor blade. Replacement backs are only about $25.

Thanks - that's not too terrible. Dings I'm not THAT concerned about unless I royally mess this up. For the most part my phone is in a slim rubber case so I'd never see them. I'm still enjoying this phone aside from battery life so definitely looking to expand its life another year at least. Nothing thats out now really meets the quality and features of the 6p for me yet.
blow dryer, hobby blade kit, playing card, phillips screw driver, patience and a brain! its super simple to do... i was sweating up a storm and then realized it wasnt hard at all. the glas on the back panel is harder than you think... and if it breaks they sell aftermarket ones for like 7 bucks.... i

It's not that hard. You need patience before any tools, mostly to open the camera glass, then it's super easy. And if you crack it, the replacement is going to cost less than 10 bucks, so it's not a big deal, don't worry!
Saw a couple of people used a hair dryer instead of a heat gun. Did it work out ok? Id rather save the $ for a product I likely won't get much use out of. But remember reading elsewhere that a hair dryer is a bad substitute... maybe for this particular job its ok?
Would someone please post source/links for oem replacement parts? Back, glass, bottom piece...
Swapping battery I'm guaranteed to break something.
Tks

Some information here

Proper waterproof tape?

My Z5C had battery swollen, so I bought a new battery from ebay and waterproof tape from Aliexpress.
Battery seems good, but the tape sucks.
It is not sticky.
I don't want to use bond or anything that makes it hard to dissemble. So my priority is a proper waterproof tape working like a Sony one.
If you know a link for that, please leave a comment ?
Currently I attached back cover with a normal 3M tape, which looks horrible!!

I found back cover slightly open because of swollen battery.. Maybe it was due to running games overnight while charging the phone.
I don't expect waterproof to be perfect, but at least back cover needs to stay still.. ?

Don't know where you live, (Sweden here), but I'm satisfied with this.
