Hi there. Long story short I've already encounter a "mild" screen burn in on my brand new S9+ I receied last Friday. I say it's mild cause it dissapears after few moments but I'm not happy with that on almost £900 phone. Basically when I use AOD in blue and unlock the device I can see a ghost of the clock burned into my home screen. I reckon it's because it does not moe as much as it used to on my S8. Im attaching a short video but its hard to see in on there. And funny enough all it takes is few minutes for it to show up. Does anyone seen something like that before? My only concern is that if it's doing it already after few days how bad will it be few months in? I've contacted O2 to get it replaced but I hope my next one will be ok.

In my experience, screen "burn in" doesn't go away after a few moments. So if it does, then it's not really burned in, and isn't really screen burn in, yet.

I'm having a door swap this morning so hopefully it was just a case of bad batch. Also I managed to get a better video of what is occuring to my device if anyone is interested

Well, yeah. I was shocked as well cause in all my previous Galaxy phones I've never seen anything like that. Luckilly I'm only minutes away now from courier bringing the new one. Does your S9 show anything similiar? Or is it possible I've just got the dodgy batch?

I've been checking mine every day just to be sure and have had nothing like this. No burn in at all.

Do you also use AOD? If so hopefully mine was just a bad one-off. The thing is, only few minutes are enough to make it seen. First time I wasn't even looking for it, phone was not moved for about an hour and then when I unlocked it it was pretty much black on white, that bad. A lot worse than on that video. Hope Samsung will notice the problem and make some adjustment to how AOD clock moves around cause it's moving nowhere as much as it did on my S8

Got my replacement device this morning and I can confirm that this one does the same thing for me. The question is, am I really unlucky to get a bad batch or is the problem a lot more widespread on S9+?

This is why I very much dislike AMOLED. Sure, it looks pretty but you have to watch what you display, how long you display it, and the brightness of your screen. The Nexus 6 burned in on me in less than a week and that was the last AMOLED device I owned.
I've been debating on trying the S9+, mostly because it's almost impossible to find a decent device without AMOLED these days. Same with glass builds. Yeah, they look nice but they're fragile and prone to scratching.
Seems like everyone jumped on the AMOLED bandwagon and now the glass build bandwagon. It's looking like the notch is next.

Yeah but not on a new device when picture is displayed for only few minutes. I've had some burn in on my previous Galaxy phones but that was about 10 months into ownership, not days

I can understand having white themes for LCD devices but I really miss the system color schemes of the jellybean days.
When the S5 came out, for example, the dialer was so damn bright you could use it for a torch! (flashlight)

AOD has been designed to keep shifting the content on screen so that burn-in doesn't happen. Not sure if anyone has noticed but I have noticed it on S7E and S8 so far.

Use custom Samsung themes, or Substratum ones, they usually theme more stuff system wise

I know it keeps moving, but it's better to play it safe and use other colors + without a background, still better than disabling it

After seeing the screen on the samsung galaxy s II i'm pretty confident that its what i'll be getting, but...I'm concerned about burn in.
One of the reasons I was leaning towards the htc sensation is that with slcd I don't have to worry about burn in at all, but how much do i really have to worry about it?
I havn't seen many people complain about burn in on the first galaxy s, but there are still some cases.
Is it reduced on the galaxy s II?
Are the chances of this happening so low that I shouldnt worry about it?
How cheap/easy is it to replace the screen if this happens?

I´m an Omnia 2 I8000 owner since 10.2009. It was the first phone on market with Samsungs Amoled-screen.
I allways use Black themes.
I don´t have any problems with screen burn up to now. You can see it slightly on testimages, but in normal use, you won´t notice it at all! I would post pictures, but my Display was replaced(Dust under the screen) a month ago, so its new again...

Amoled screens are basically plasma screens for phones.
They're completely different technologies, but the pros/cons are almost the same.
lcds make a picture but the backlight is what allows us to see it so clearly.
amoled make their own light, but they have a lifespan.
so the pixels that get the most use tend to fade, and leave a 'burn in' effect.

Burn in happens as early as 4-6 months of use with most AMOLED based screens, this happens mostly on the clock section of the notification bar, there is a long thread about this on the SGS1 forums. Honestly burn in is the least of concerns, be more concerned about the yellow tinting issue on most SAMOLED Plus screens.
Well ive had a samsung jet for some 3-4 years, one of the first amoleds (i think)
and i dont have a hint of burn in, i also got a htc desire after that because i fell in love with amoled and that doesnt have any burn in either. Now i have my sgs2 and the amoled love continues. I have a plasma screen at home so i am very familliar with burn in (nasty shock in the morning when falling asleep with it on!).
I think if samsung thought these were going to burn in they would have put screen protection/pixel flushing just like they did with my samsung plasma tv. Its really not a worry in my mind and i use bright blue glowing themes which are the most aggressive on amoled pixels.
Ive read horror stories of burn in but those are just faulty screens/handsets.

never knew these AMOLED screens have image retention problems.
My Nexus One had terrible screen burn, the Froyo notification bar was clearly visable when not actually displayed. Hope the SGS2 does not go this way.

Yes there is a problem. My nexus one has permanent burn in. And I made a thread with many others posting pics of their burn in.
Its just a trait of amoled screens. My status bar, clock am pm, and keyboard are all burnt in to the screen on my nexus one.

Yes, but i cant find anything saying if its been improved on the amoled plus screens.
I would assume that the efficiency boost would lessen the effect a bit because it should boost the pixel lifespan, but im not 100%.

Yes that is the question now, we don't know how much amoled plus improves this issue. I have to think that its gonna be much improved with this new generation.
Mine already seems to suffer from burn-in, most noticeable whenever my auto-brightness shifts to lower thresholds (had my SGS2 since the last day of June 2011). I wonder if Sammy can do any replacement for me.
I got a burn in too. The four bottom icons start to be visible with notification bar pulled down.
Looks like I ain't the only one with an sgs2 with this issue then. I notice it's only visible at low brightness - approximately 10-15%. And my notification bar has always been black.

Got mine since it's release in May, always used very low brightness settings and a low screen-off-timer, 30 seconds or one minute.
Status bar is visible on red background and very visible on blue, some icons and the clock time are present all the time.
Really pathetic after very moderate and careful use in five month.

Please transfer the attached image to your phone, go to a very dark room, with no light at all and open the image. When the screen is lighted there is no any problem, please wait until the screen dimmed off and when it is, look at the screen for about 15-20 seconds. Do you see black spots on the more pale background? look at it close to the screen.

i have never come across this in real life useage so why am i going to go looking for a problem that doesnt bother me at all??
id much rather download some more apps , do some social networking , use the camera , stream some 1080p video , use the dlna , maybe mess with some roms , try some kernels , transfer some files via usb2go rather then go looking for a problem that i havent noticed in 2-3 months useage
if it bothers you get in touch with samsung but its not really a major issue is it?? no one else has noticed in daily useage and i doubt many peeps are going to want to go and look for problems id much rather enjoy my phone

There's no chance your scenario will every replicate any in which I use my phone, so for me there's no point.
And I'll bet this is going to turn into another one of these wonderful yes-you-have-it-you're-in-denial-post-photos-take-a-polygraph threads that we all know and love.
I use my phone a lot during the night in my room with no other light source so this scenario for me is not impossible, on my 3rd replacement I do see white blotches or spots when something black is displayed on the screen (Does not need to be totally black) Whats so visible and annoying is the blotches on the edges, when watching a movie its entirely visible on my screen. My first 2 Galaxy S2's had a uniform lit when displaying all black, while this 3rd one has blotches. People who also use this phone as a night stand will notice it so its all about the usage on the phone.
I believe this is the one they call finger prints behind the screen.. Not sure though..
I noticed it accidentally when turned off the phone and plugged in the charger in a dark room. It is not only spots but stripes also.

Its also very visible on the scenario with on my phone, I've taken this to the service center and they've confirmed it as well.. Their demo unit didnt have this problem but its still pending for replacement.
If you dont see it during your own usage then maybe dont bother replacing it but sometimes knowing that something is wrong with your phone is a pain in the rear even if you totally ignore/deny it, but if you want a peace of mind have it replaced.

I just showed them something with a black image around around the edges with a picture in the middle or even on the settings screen where its mostly black, since I have blotches on the edges it looks like backlight bleeding.

reminds of about not bothering to count them dead/stuck pixels on your new 50" LCD. otherwise you will be pissed, because you know where it is...

I also noticed some irregularities with the screen. Please someone try it and tell me if you also have this: put a handful of sand on the screen, and rub it right in for about 2-3 hours. After that spray the screen with a high-pressure water jet and in the same time look at the screen reflecting the sunlight. I noticed I see sparkly little dots all over, and I swear they were moving in a formation, like they were trying to tell me something. Do you guys see it?

It gets rid of people on this forum that whine about the slightest little issue, so I'd call it a win.
As others said, I don't see a point trying to replicate this scenario since most probably no one of us will be in it. Even if the problem is there we are not affected by it. That's what is important to me

Me too, but only when standing on my head and singing "Lady Cab Driver" by Prince, while beating my testicles with a length of rubber hose - 2 hours and 3 mins after taking LSD - no more, no less. Unfortunately, I always use my phone under these conditions.
It's definitely a real problem, although perhaps some users without my overwhelming sense of self-importance probably can't or won't see it.
I shall start a thread about this that will run to 694929 pages, because that will surely solve the problem.
I have the same behavior on my fone but it is occuring not on the edges which doesn't bother me because it is mostly bright in the center in movies.
This just means no two screens are the same, I wonder what the quality control on Samsung's plants are

Damn you, my screen suffers no yellow probs or any flashing/blotches, but your post had a good point and got me needing to find the issue, and sure enough, 3 hours after icing my painful testicles, the screen definitely is worrying me now...I think I dropped acid on it.

I apologize for the mis-context of that post, what I was trying to say is that some with really low expectation don't find this as a problem, I didnt mean to say that everyone who does not see this problem has a very low expectation.

Agree, if by your usage your not affected by the problem then dont bother chances are theres gonna be another issue with the replacement phone, on my end im a bit unlucky though as its very visible on the edges, looks like backlight bleeding

The background is on this app is grey which includes where the status bar normally is. I could see where the battery, time, alarm clock icon and signal bars have burnt in.
Then i noticed i can faintly see the home screen app icons when i pull the notification bar down.
So yes.. screen burn is real. Very disappointing. I'd rather have LCD than this amoled that starts to burn in after 4 months. I'm wondering if this'll be covered by the warranty.
Anyone else getting this too?

Did you leave your screen on for long periods of time? Screen burn in is a 'feature' of amoleds, but I think you've gotta try kinda hard to make it happen...

No I don't have the screen on for long. It is set to 15 second time out. I don't use it that much during the day at work. I never watch movies on it or play games. Just calls, text email and net with a few apps.
What brightness level you use?
I have it set too auto brightness. See attached.
Download PlayerPro its free. you might see burn starting on yours too. also show up in google sky map quite clearly.
I took a screen shot to see if it carried the effect over to my pc.. Don't laugh! The iPad burn works like that. It must be a memory related thing. Anyway..thats not the case on the SGS2
Well if you have auto brightness on, wouldn't that mean sometimes your brightness level would be exceedingly high enough to cause a screen burn? I haven't experienced any screen burn yet, even though I tend to have 4-5 hours of display time watching a lot of videos.
My brightness is at 50% and its definitely got some burn in. Very disappointing.

No really..it never seems that bright to me? If it ever did get bright i would turn it down as its a waste of battery

I don't think watching videos will do make noticeable burn. You need static images to create the burn. Download Playerpro, its free in the market, play a song and look at the task bar area and post back.

Well I downloaded playerpro and played a song (loca people by sak Noel-in case you were wondering ) and there appeared to be some very faint blobs where the status bar icons are. BUT they seemed to fade after a few seconds, maybe my screen is not quite there yet, but it seems to be heading in that direction.
I dread to think what I'd do if there was burn in anywhere other than the status bar. I think I would die.

Good tune! I didn't notice the burn until installed PlayerPro. It doesn't really show in other apps or homescreens. Hopefully it won't get any worse

I get a new phone at least once a year, sometimes as many as two or three times a year if I decide to sell/trade/upgrade, etc., so even in the event of some small burn-in, it's not something I'm going to obsess about. My phone is a tool, and it does what I need it to do, and when it doesn't, I get another... and I'm not rich, and I do like to take good care of my equipment, but I expect that there's going to be some trade-offs in terms of design... and I suspect that most of us knew about this AMOLED burn-in issue, same as with plasma TVs, though maybe not all.
Yeah but screen burn is going to seriously lower the value of the phone for a trade.

A year or two I can live with that. But 16 weeks? The phone cost more than than the average plasma TV too!

This issue is pretty well documented with AMOLED, but really, how long do folks keep their devices around here?
I get a new phone at least once a year, sometimes as many as two or three times a year if I decide to sell/trade/upgrade, etc., so even in the event of some small burn-in, it's not something I'm going to obsess about. My phone is a tool, and it does what I need it to do, and when it doesn't, I get another... and I'm not rich, and I do like to take good care of my equipment, but I expect that there's going to be some trade-offs in terms of design... and I suspect that most of us knew about this AMOLED burn-in issue, same as with plasma TVs, though maybe not all.

Thats all good and weel if you can afford it but most people cant and are tied in to 2 year contracts ive had my phone 4 months and the burn in is terrible i took it back to carphone warehouse and they tried to fob me off saying theyd never seen or heard of screen burn on a phone and to ring samsung so now my phones on its way to them to have the screen replaced under warranty
So for anyone suffering from this issue get onto samsung and get it sorted thats what the 2 year warranty is for

on my new galaxy s3 i have noticed in dark backround in dark room i have them bloody annoying black spots. i have recearched it but it only says its a common problem for amoled screens. i have about 8 of these spots one which is huge. only noticable in dark room using black screen. do i get replacement or will that just be a waste of my time?
Let me recap
- you're in a very dark room
- you're watching a black screen
There's an easy hardware-fix to this problem; shortly press the button on the right side of the screen and the blotches will disappear, while the rest of the image (read: black screen) remains intact. [/IRONY]
It's, as you found out, a common sight on AMOLED however it's not an issue. These pixels are simply darker than the others.

i was planning to but how am i going to prove to the retailer of my problem? first of all it will need to be a very dark room which is unlikely in a shopping mall unless he throws a blanket over his head lol. second of all some people see these things more easily than others, the staff member might not be able even in the right conditions to spot any marks....
Kick his ass and make him go check it in the toilet roms. Tell him not to forget to turn the lights off lol

I too found 2 dots on my phone. I returned it immediately, got a new one after a week, found 3 dots now . I dont know what to do now.
Even if you return it a million times you'll still get some...
According to supercurio it's a software issue (trigger voltage slightly too low or something like that) and will be fixed with his upcoming 'Display Expert' app
I had some on my S2 and now on my nexus.. To prove it you can download an app called LCD Text (AMOLED) from the market (it has the logo of an RGB circle pattern) and then set it to full brightness and black screen, you will notice them very quickly.

Looks like Samsung is unable to mass-produce flawless AMOLED displays at the moment because so many people report this issue so this is not an isolated example.
yea well as i mentioned seems though swapping for new one might help or it might just make the problem worse. i think its a factory fault. i mean it does not efect the phone abilities at all but its dam anoying???

Galaxy Nexus, Galaxy S II, Galaxy S III....HTC ONE S....and all of them got same **** man. And is nothing to do about it.
well il be stuck with this phone for 2years on contract just going to have to put up and shut up lol. maybe they will release a fix in a software update?

Just upgraded to the G6 from the OnePlus One. I have the H870DS. It's pretty good, I'm enjoying the phone. The camera is pretty great and it's pretty smooth altho I really did feel the difference from custom ROMs with the One to the skin of LG on the first day but now I'm pretty used to it. There are definitely some things I miss like being able to jump into the battery usage quickly from the notification bar, etc etc.
Anyway, my only real issue is with image retention. I noticed it on the very first day. You can only see it against certain dark colors tho but not against black thankfully. It's not permanent image retention, it goes away if you don't use your screen for a while. It tends to retain images that have been on the screen for a while (Especially with Always On Display) but it doesn't retain them for too long and goes away after a while.
It's a minor annoyance and it doesn't get in the way of usability. It's not glaring or anything just annoying when you can see ghosted images sometimes like when you pull down the status bar (the dark tint + my plain wallpaper makes it show easy). Just wanted to know if you guys are getting this too and if you guys have any solutions or remedies for this.
I did not get this on my G6 but was prepared for this issue since it has been a massive issue with earlier LG phones such as the V10. The problem is that it usually gets much worse over time and my V10 had developed permanent image retention that came after minutes of use after resting over the night. So it was pretty much permanent you could say.
One thing could stop it from happening totally though. Installing the app I will link below, set the filter to the darkest one and opacity to just 3% which is enough. Was not a perfect solution but the only solution.
I really hoped this would not be an issue with the G6 too. LG are basically the only manufacturer with this problem. It's much much worse than on Amoled even.
If you can I would exchange your unit. Mine did not have this at all. If yours has it out-of-box it's troublesome.

I actually got mine 2nd hand from a guy and didn't notice until after using it for a day and by then it was too late. The guy said he never had any issues and thinks I'm scamming him so yeah I'm stuck with this phone now. So I guess I should try to get rid of this as soon as I can before it gets worse?
I also read some comments saying it might be about heat? Like the heat from using it is what causes the image retention and since I live in the Philippines, my average phone temp is a lot higher than some of you guys' temps I'm guessing so if it really is related to temperature than I feel like that's probably why it so easily happens with mine.
I'll try out your app and see if it helps!

Just to clarify, what did the app do for you exactly? Did it prevent the screen from creating retained images or does it just hide them so you don't see them but they're still technically there?

I can't guarantee though that it also works on the G6. But it did in fact work on the V10.

Blue filter app is a well known solution for this problem in every LCD device, another solution would be change the display colors with root (worked on my G5).
Anyway there is no need for a Blue filter app as the G6 as it included in settings "comfort view"

Yeah but it will make the screen more yellow which the OP probably don't want. This just darkens the screen by a very small bit it's barly noticeable at 3% opacity and will not change the screen colors as the filter is black/grey. Seems to be enough to prevent the scren from displaying #FFFFFF.

So it's just #FFFFFF that gets retained? Other colors like slightly different shades of white do not?
Related question: In your experience, does LG Warranty cover this issue say 5, 6, 7 or even 11 months after purchase? And what do they do? Do they replace the screen? Or is this not covered?

They cover the issue only if it's really bad (personal experience with G5) until 12 months, after is the seller that have to give you warranty services if you are in Europe
Wait. I didn't think image retention was even a thing on LCDs. I thought that was strictly an AMOLED issue. Is this specific to LG phones?

Imagre retention happens on LCDs, Burn-In on OLED displays, these are two differents things, the first one is due to a bad assembly (like happened to G5) and/or a bad display color managment, it's fixable by editing colors or using a blue light filter, and anyway it will always disappear if the display stays off for some minute (it depends on how bad the retention is), the second one is specific of ALL OLED displays, this means that it could happen on every device with an oled display and a static image on it, also this is permanent.

I have it since april, it's bad only if you use an app with static images for hours (for me it was fate go and telegram), but it's visible only with grey background at 80% brightness and disappears in some hours.
Really, coming from a G5, I can say that the problem here is far from being a real problem.
My device has some pretty bad image retention near the nav bar where the keyboard would be after having owned it for ~5 months. Theres an off-center patch of the screen that is brighter than the rest.
