Hello,
With my previous Galaxy s7 I used Tasker to turn on my hotspot when it detected my cars Bluetooth. But it doesn't seem to work on my S9+ (US Sprint). I've tried Macrodroid as well as Tasker with the 'Nougat+ Tasker Tethering Control'.
It seems the issue may be Oreo related? Anybody know a way?
My car stereo is a Joying Android unit and it's nice not having to constantly turn hotspot on manually to use Pandora etc.
I have the exact same problem. Seems like the device has to be rooted.
That may be a possibility, but I'm holding out hope that it's just a Tasker update.

Unfortunately it´s the same with other "task apps"

I have the same problem. Did you find a Solution?
I have not yet found a solution. In all honesty, I gave up. If there's no answer here, there likely isn't one to be found
If you have access to Samsung's Good Lock 2018 app (via the Galaxy Apps store), install it. There's an app called "Routines" that gets installed with it. It is like a *very * basic Tasker, but it has the necessary permissions to turn on the tethering on my AT&T S9+. I fought with Tasker/AutoInput on my S7E and the S9+ until the new Good Lock came out.

This worked great for me. I really wish I'd have looked back at this post sooner!
anyone know how to get Routines to use Bluetooth NEAR instead of necessarily being Bluetooth CONNECTED?

If only there was a routine to turn off wifi tether when the bluetooth connection dropped.... It's so close to perfect.
I guess this is all a moot point now that Routines is no longer supported in Pie.
Its June 14th, 2019.
AT&T Note 9 locked, not rooted, all the latest updates.
I have tried just about every possible way of doing this. There are a few ways that work, but only one works reliably.
1. Install Samsung Good Lock - It works for me, today, as of posting, on pie just fine.
2. install Tasker
3. in Good lock - create a bluetooth connected to XXXX routine to enable hotspot
4. in Good lock - create a routine to disable hotspot on wifi enable
5. in tasker - create routine to enable wifi on inverted bluetooth connected to XXXX
I never want true wifi enabled while I am in my vehicle with my andoid head unit.
I always want wifi on when not in my vehicle.
Samsung good lock has the perms to enable/disable hotspot just fine.
Only use of tasker in this is to turn wifi on when disconnected from vehicle bluetooth, which triggers the samsung routine to turn off the hotspot.
Works flawlessly, which I cannot say for Tasker+AutoInput or any other method.
Good Lock + Routines' [WiFi | Tether] automation rocks

I realize it's been a year, but I'm SO glad I finally found this solution. As of now, Good Lock (V 1 .0.00.64) with Routines, current and running on Android 10, seems to undo actions automatically after the routine's trigger condition ends. IOW, when I turn off my car and the ATOTO bluetooth connection ends, the Mobile Hotspot is shut down pretty quickly and automatically (otherwise Samsung's Mobile Hotspot can be set to turn off after 10 minutes of inactivity).
I also setup a simple routine to turn on WiFi when I'm within 20 meters of my house (the only place I use WiFi for Internet access and controlling local WiFi-connected devices). As with the simple Bluetooth-connection-triggering-Hotspot Routine, I notice that WiFi is automatically turned back off when I leave home.
My US model S9 (G960U1) is the first phone I've had in the last decade where I couldn't unlock the bootloader and gain root... Good Lock and Routines almost mitigates that big annoyance (and I have grudgingly found better uses for my time then constantly flashing new Android builds . Big thanks to @brycestejskal for pointing Samsung's Good Lock + Routines.

FYI, with the current version of Good Lock + Routines on Android 10, the use of Tasker is unnecessary in this scenario. Routines now appears to turn off Hotspot automatically after the Bluetooth connection goes away.
As for turning WiFi back on, I only want WiFi to be on routinely [sic] while at home, so I created a simple Routine to do that (one condition: Near home address; one action: Turn on WiFi).
I had previously installed Tasker for these specific tasks, but it failed without having root. I've now uninstalled Tasker.
Thanks again for your posting, @brycestejskal ! I needed this pointer.
truth. It's been working great for me actually. Getting the Android Head Unit to cooperate is another issue. The only problem I have experienced with Good Lock + Routines is when Android OS gets upgraded, Good Lock + Routines is broken for about a month or so.
And thank you for your message above, as your idea to only turn on Wifi at particular locations might be able to help me in my quest to disable my phone from continually connecting to Xfinity hotspots (I am Xfinity mobile subscriber) wherever I go.
Thank you to everyone on this forum actually.
Thanks @bmeek and @user9082390!
Since I wrote this, I stopped using tasker. The wifi hotpot can be set to disable after 5 minutes, and locations>enableWifi bridges the gap as you mentioned.
Only issue I ever have, is in low service areas, sometimes the hotspot fails to "provision". I then usually can get it to work by manually turning wifi off, then enabling hotspot. A minor downside for something that works flawlessly 99% of the time. GoodLock + Routines with my 10.1" android headset still rocks. Really glad I went with the headunit. I was concerned it would be slow junk. It works great.

Do mean that the mobile hotspot intermittently fails to start; starts but won't give your head unit a connection/IP address; or it let's the head unit connect but then fails do it's job as a NAT router and provide Internet access?
I experienced the latter flaw a few times when I had configured my hotspot to "5GHz preferred" after someone on an xda ATOTO A6 Pro thread reported seriously better performance at 5GHz. I'm back at 2.4GHz and it's working reliably.
So I doubt you have a 10.1" "android headset"... Are you referring to the Atoto A6Y1021PR head unit? If so, I'm envious of your old school volume knob .
I had feared that a swiveling 10 inch display would be a thief magnet in my old Lexus (that also lacks steering wheel controls), so l got the more conventional A6Y2721PRB (IPS display with a row of physical buttons beneath the screen). I wish it had a faster CPU as the UI lags occasionally, and I would prefer a volume knob instead of the buttons, but it's a great head unit overall!

The hotspot fails to start on occasion. It will state that it was unable to provision, and to contact service provider. Toggling hotspot manually thereafter results in same error. If I then turn of the Wifi, and then enable hotspot, it will work fine. Usually doesn't happen.
Lol, yeah not headset, but headunit. Silly typo.
It is an AndroidAutoShop variation of the XTRONS brand. I actually received mine after a Paypal dispute, but I would not recommend ordering from them. I just REALLY wanted that DSP and took the risk. It arrived 2 months late.
Mine has the DSP and IPS, and is 10.1" screen with the PX5 chip, 4GB ram. Even on that, the UI lags occasionally, but I only ever care when I am at a stop. It is fast enough that I do not notice the lags while driving. Using a 7" Pioneer with Android Auto was just as laggy in my experience actually.
The Atoto offerings are neat, but I didn't care about some of the "pros" it offered, vs the "pros" for the Xtrons/AAS unit. Just depends on how you plan to use it. I have zero need for BT5.0 APTX receiving, because I use the headunit as the source running the app. Didn't want the screen jutting up higher due to the knob design. My headunit mounts at the top of the dash, so anything higher is further into field of view. Wanted DSP, didnt care about built-in amp because using RCA to big amps, etc etc.
Really happy with my unit. In a different vehicle, I prolly would go with the atoto.
(not about automating WiFi Tether)

Good to hear that you're happy and the unit you received is working well. I hadn't heard about AndroidAutoShop.com, so I googled it and scanned the xda thread about them (and saw your post near the end). Sounds like you may have received the very last unit they sold...

I have been thinking recently about moving on to a newer Android device for a phone, and converting my Eris into a general purpose, WiFi-only Android device, for things like Media center remote control, Portable MP3 player, etc.
My question, basically, is whether or not its possible to completely disable the cellular radio and any other associated phone/mms/3G/2G drivers and utilities. Stripping out all the miscellaneous apks and apps i dont want is the easy part. Removing drivers, disabling devices, and modifying config files is the part i'm not comfortable with yet. Any tips, pointers or links would be awesome.
Is anybody else interested in having a ROM like this distributed on this forum? I can start posting my progress builds on here if there is interest. Otherwise, if something like this already exists, please let me know!
as far as using it as a wi-fi only device you can simply put the phone into airplane mode and then urn on the wi-fi.
Unwanted programs I have used this program (link below)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=628138
If your phone is rooted you can use the application manager to erase any app you want and hopefully thats good enough for what your looking for. I
It sounds like your looking to do more that I have knowledge in so hopefully this will help till you get the setup your looking for
When you setup your device on first boot after flashing a rom doesn't it have an option for wifi only connection on setup? Granted you may still have to airplane mode afterwards like said above, not really sure but worth a try.... hope this helps.

I'd be interested, I wouldn't mind letting a youngin use it for mp3 player or something but always worried about an accidental 911 call or something dumb like that
sent from a phone
I think you could take an existing ROM and prune it from them and be happy. Removing drivers or disabling devices ? Not really necessary.... I think if you removed "phone.apk", there'd be no accidental 911 calls made, at least. My first thought was, don't activate it, but you can always make 911 calls as alluded to.
I realize removing the non-used stuff is likely in effort to trim it down to just the necessary stuff, but as I said, it might be overkill.
I've actually been thinking something like this would be awesome for when I retire this thing I say +1

You can re-enable WiFi after you enable airplane mode.
You could always go into the test call mode or whatever the field programming thing is and disable the radio from there. I forget exactly what the number is to call but it's the one that brings up all the field test tools and stuff...there's an option to completely disable the cellular radio.
Sounds like your basically looking for a honeycomb rom. Pretty sure if we just wait a bit we could possibly see something like that soon. I have faith in our devs.

I am looking for something like this too. I just bought a bluetooth odb2 adapter so I can use my old eris to monitor my vehicle and do gps and music. I'll probably even make a sweet case for it so basically only the screen shows and it could be installed in the dash. It could sync music whenever I am home in range of wifi. Plus with the new google maps "offline" feature, I could cache frequently used areas.
I think you should go ahead and start something of a tutorial. Just start from a good lean stable 2.2 rom and document what you remove/add etc. and what apps work best for something like that.
If you remove /system/bin/rild, (the "Radio Interface Layer Daemon") there is no longer a possibility of dialing any calls, getting any voice or data service, SMS, MMS et cetera.
This is not the same thing as turning off power to the radio, however. I think you would want to do that for reasons of power conservation alone.

This is an great concept for a ROM. I have also been thinking about this, because shortly I will be retiring this little guy. I was going to give it to my wife because she refuses to get a smartphone and has an mp3 player from like 8 years ago that she refuses to upgrade! The Eris keeps my kids busy when we are out also. This way I wouldn't have to worry about my kids (or my wife) doing something stupid!

Does it work better to remove the line from init.d or whatever? Or do errors finding files not matter?
There is a project underway to do this very thing, keep an eye on these forums and they'll be posting it when its ready for the world.

Hope I'm not duplicating anything, but there seems to be a lot of BT related questions and none answered in one unified place. Also I think the BT Dev thread should be left to the devs (to keep it easier for them to work on things, rather than help us mere mortals ).
This applies to CM7 (latest nightlies, Tablet Tweak RCs) ONLY (as far as I know).
So, if bluetooth does not turn on, there a few things that you can try.
Do a HARD reset (that is, hold down the power button until the NookColor turns off, then start it back up.
Fix Permissions in ClockworkRecovery:
Boot into CWR (w/SD, load it in. With CWR installed on eMMC, go to ROM Manager > Reboot into Recovery. Alternatively, hold down the power plus "N" button for ~8 seconds (from a shutdown NookColor).
Try both!
An interesting thing to note is some users (myself included) can only start up bluetooth within a pretty short window of time after the NC has booted up. Not sure why timing is important, but could be a factor for those who cannot start up BT after some given time of operation.
I found this tip that may work after a fresh (read: wipe system/data) install, but may also work after flashing a nightly over a nightly.
If you're ready to turn on Bluetooth, there's a trick. If you don't do this, Bluetooth will just refuse to turn on / be enabled.
Turn off wifi (Settings > Wireless & Networks > Wi-Fi)
Reboot
Turn on Bluetooth (Settings > Wireless & Networks > Bluetooth)
Turn on wifi
It seems a bit odd, but that's what you have to do. From then on out it'll work fine.

For tethering data via BT, try android-wifi-tether. While it can be used to create an access point on your phone via wifi, you can also opt to use BT to create the tether. This works well in conjunction with TetherGPS which I use to provide GPS info to the NC from my G1 while using CoPilot Live to show navigation (I don't have data on the G1).

me too. I went back to 4/4 since them. If I leave BT on all the time, it is on when I boot, but if I turn off BT and reboot, it won't come on without a hardboot (holding down power.)
Fix permissions is NOT needed, just a hard boot.

For the last few days Ive been trying to get BT working w/ my car stereo, using phiremod 5.3
I have no problems enabling Bluetooth (first time I had to reboot a few times and fix permissions)
With it flat against the stereo, I'm 'paired but not connected' and getting it to actually connect usually takes 4 - 5 tries.
After its connected- when I try to play any kind of music, it gets stuck every few seconds- and stays stuck for more than a few seconds (like 10) and plays again.
I just downloaded this kernel, (wiped caches, fixed permissions again) and it connected on the second time, and only got 'stuck' once for maybe 2 seconds, and played the rest of the song with no problems.
Seems like it changed something on my end...
Just figured I'd mentioned it.
(I can go back to the other kernel, or a different version of cm7, and see if I get the same connecting/ stuttering problem, if you thing it would help)
Btw- thanks so much for sharing all of your hard work!

Never had an issue with the IMEI number, but here's how I got it setup.
Start with the TetherGPS app running server on the phone and client on the NC, as well as tether-wifi from google running on the phone, then connect to the AP on the NC
Next, open/install the app. It should read the GPS data from the phone
Now, switch back to a wireless connection with internet access, download the voice, then enter the serial/etc...
Finally, load the app back up after all the registration stuff 'n things, and use the "internet" connection from the phone to grab the GPS info.
Copied and edited from cm7 user thread.
I have xoom bluetooth keyboard with disconnect issues. Would the special kernel help with this?
From the accessories thread. "I found a work-around. Download the app Bluetooth Keyboard JP, change the settings in settings > Language and Keyboard to that app, then connect the keyboard." Anybody else try this or others? Blue Input is another one. I know of one more but can remember its name.
I'm running Phiremod v5.3 cm7 from emmc and cm7 nightlies from sd card. I usually have a data sd card but can switch it out. I have updated the cm7 sd card before. Not sure which nightly and OC I used last. Could use ClockWorksMod to flash this kernel to Phiremod v5.3. Could replace the kernel, uImage, on the SD card. Usually there are different kernels for emmc and sd card.
Another issue: When I have the keyboard active and playing flash files from the internet, it seems to buffer more. If I move the keyboard out of range or use settings to disconnect the keyboard, the buffering is less and the flash files play better. I have cyfi bluetooth external speakers. When I use them I get the same buffering issue, so I just use an external player through the headphone jack instead.

Apparently the latest version of Copilot has introduced this error. I have spoken with tech support regarding the issue and they told me that they are aware of the problem and will release an update early next week that will fix the problem. Apparently if you have version 8.2.504 it works, but the new version breaks it. The dev won't send me a copy of the old version, so I guess I'll just have to wait and hope.

I don't know if that is a solution, but the problem appears to be a conflict between wifi and bluetooth. Turn off wifi and most of your keyboard problems will go away.
Also there is an app on the market called "Null Keyboard" Which simply turns on a keyboard device that disables everything keyboard related. It doesn't disable bluetooth input, but it gets rid of the long-press pop ups and is suppose to solve other issues as well (including the software keyboard popping up every time you want to type.)
I haven't had time to install it, but it's purchased.

I was just using google voice to text from several feet back. In fact it was hard to read the small print from that distance. I did not realized that keyboards have a larger range then headsets.
Testing Bluetooth Keyboard JP now. Force closes, so just switched to swift keyboard I downloaded from amazon app store for free. To get out swift keyboard and get a null keyboard, I hit the back key on the xoom keyboard, then the virtual swift keyboard no longer shows up.
@chisleu do you have a link or instruction to modify bluetooth keyboards so that keys can have their mappings corrected. Xoom has some correct and some wrong or disabled under CM7.
Couldn't get BT to work at all however powering down while the wifi is off, and turning the bluetooth on before the wifi made it works on the first try. Was streaming Slacker to my stereo in a matter of minutes. Wifi doesn't seem to interfere with the BT audio stream at all, audio sounded crisp and perfect. Range however was still limited to a foot or so.
Hoping there is a possible hardware mod that can hook up an antenna to the BT chip. I'd be in heaven if I had full BT functionality on this beast.
FYI, Although I don't have any RF experience I'm still an electrical engineer so if anyone can toss me a bone on the PCB layout or pinouts of the nook I might be able to try stuff to boost the range.
What is the feasibility of adding dial-up networking client support to CM7? Some folks are able to tether their NC to their phone using an ad hoc wifi network, and others have had success via a Bluetooth personal area network (PAN) using the "pand" utility. Unfortunately, I have a Blackberry phone, and it does not support the PAN profile. It does, however, support dial-up networking (DUN) over Bluetooth (confirmed with a Windows laptop).
According to https://sites.google.com/a/android.com/opensource/projects/bluetooth-faq, "dund" is the client utility that is needed to establish a dial-up connection from Android to another device. When I run this command on the NC, it says "dund: not found". I'm not a developer and don't know how much effort would be involved in adding this functionality to the build. Is it just a matter of including the binaries, or is there additional development work involved?
Thanks in advance..
I have read a whole topic about gps and who might use and not use.
Complaints and otherbthings.
As me and my wife use the prime and are very happy with it we would like to use itr navigation.
We like tonse the programm on a bigger screen when we travell bybcar through china on the htc sensation we use navigon but we can not istall it onbthe prima.
So we wanna think in solutions not discuss teh gps problem in the prime there are allready so many posts about that.
So i am looking for creative solutions like i have whatsapp on my prime now without fone card.
Why i would like navigation with maps on prime.

We both have a htc sensation and a prime (my wife is taiwanese and inam dutch) so dutch makenexcelent cheese but taiwanese make excelent elecronics.
Our fones and primes are rooted offcourse.
So can we use our fone gps andnconnect with prime?
Europe maps and asian maps how can we use navigon on the prime?
So i not likento know whats not good or possible just creative ideas or solutions.
Will try myself as well and share the results just like the whatsapp solution.

My solution so far. I'm still figuring out what map software I will ultimately use but the Pharos BT receiver and BT GPS app work great.
Used Bluetooth GPS app (Android Market https://market.android.com/details?...GwsMSwxLDUwMSwiZ29vZ29vLmFuZHJvaWQuYnRncHMiXQ.... ) to connect my 12 channel Pharos iGPS-500. Make sure to check enable mock GPS provider (which will be BT GPS app).

Check in BT GPS app that I was locked solid on 12 satellites! I'd much rather use this because it is a true GPS receiver and seems better than anything in a smartphone (at least mine) or tablet.
I used Sygic GPS Navigation for the map downloaded (free 7 day trial) from the market. To use off-line you need to download area specific map as well.
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.sygic.aura#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDUwMSwiY29tLnN5Z2ljLmF1cmEiXQ..
I made sure both my GPS and WiFi were turned off. Followed me all the way home. If Asus ever fixes the GPS issue wouldn't matter to me. I was actually going to do this on my smartphone a while back because my GPS in it is not that good. I just never got around to doing it. I got this to work on my phone as well. I'm kind of glad the Prime has this "problem" it lit a fire under me to get this done.
There are many other solutions that work like this you just have to dig around on the www.
This is my setup unless I decide to buy a different map apps which are available.

Agreed but there are many on ebay and I'm sure someone could find a nice used one. I bought this to us with my PDA years ago. I'm just trying to help people that want to use a 10.1 inch tablet for navigation. One thing using a tablet (especailly the Prime with it's outstanding display) is that it lights up the inside of the car like a light bulb, even with the brightness turned all the way down and the software set to night mode.
There is a post and explanation in the forum about whatsapp how to just search on whats app and its there how i did it

The bluetooth program on the prine many time say service discovery failed. Sometimes when close the program on the prime or on htc and restart once in a while i get it working but most of the time when push connect again after restart it give service discovery failed.?
Could there be a blue tooth setting wrong?

My experience with using BT to use my phone as a GPS receiver with the Prime.
I experienced something similar the first time I tried to use my SGS2. This isue was with the phone and not my Prime.
Once you turn bluetooth on for both devices go into one of the bluetooth setting on either device and search for "device" the device doing the searching should locate the other bluetooth device. Hit connect. You will then be asked to accept the connection on the other device.
Now both devices should be paired.
Open Bluetoo GPS on th ePrime
Open GPS over BT on the phone
If the service discovery fails (as it did in may case) I had to do a cold reboot of my phone. Power off the phone completely.
A better option in my opinion for navigation purposes is not to use a phone's GPS but to get a Bluetooth GPS receiver. I had no trouble connecting a BT GPS receiver to the Prime using Bluetooth GPS on the Prime. You wil get better battery life out of a BT GPS receiver.
Good luck.
Loses GPS
I have been experimenting with BT GPS and GPS over BT with my Droid2. It works fine initially but then says it lost GPS after a few minutes. Looking at the BT GPS app seems to indicate that the connection to the Droid2 is still there and working fine, but the apps (like Navigation) seem to lose their GPS connection. Restarting the application seems to reconnect for a few minutes, then it loses it again.
I've watched the Droid2 and its lock seems rock solid.
Am I missing some setting? I have the "mock location" enabled on the Prime and in the BT GPS app.

Hhhhmmm it seems that the fone connection and bluentooth connect nos so smooth with the prime.
Like a poster saidnmaybebshould have a separate gps receiver with blue tooth to solve the connection problem.
Any suggestion wich one?
Still struglingnwith finding a navigation program with mapsmon the nprime. Seems all programs i download from other markets the n the standard market have timre limit or not run at all like navigon.

connect to sygic
I connected my htc fone now to the prime and on the prime the programm blue tooth gps shows the htc satelits.
Butnseems i can not let sygic find the coordinates from bluetooth gos it keeps starting the primes gps. Can not find a setting to redirect the sygic navigation program to the blue tooth programm.
How can indo this?
I knew i kept my Holux M-1000 bluetooth GPS around for a reason! It never dawned on me to try that till i read this post. Thanks for the awesome suggestion... I will try it out more tomorrow when I'm out driving all over town. But so far so good!!!

Just got some NFC tags but haven't set them up to do anything yet. What neat things are you doing with your NFC tags? What's your favorite NFC read/write app?

My favourite NFC read/write app is NFC Task Launcher which is free on Google Play.
Here are some things I've done in the past with NFC Tags:
- Put a NFC tag on my front door to toggle WiFi
- Stuck one in our meeting room entrances to help silence everyone's phones
- Put one in my car to start music and turn on Bluetooth
- Put one at my bedside table that sets my alarm
I think they help to save a lot of time once I got used to remembering to use them. Hope you find some useful ways to use yours!
If you want a general list of uses do not select "yes this is a question" as all [Q]s go in Q&A and this would be moved.

I realize this is a topic about how people *do* use them...but I don't. I don't see the point.
I leave WiFi and Bluetooth on all the time. When I get into a place that has WiFi (my house, my car, my work, etc...) it automatically connects without having to put the phone by an NFC tag. When I get in the car it automatically connects to bluetooth. I keep my phone on vibrate probably 90% of the time, and even when I want to turn on the ringer it takes about 3 seconds to do it manually, so I don't see the real need for an NFC tag.
The *only* thing I might use one for (and I'm not sure if it's possible to do exactly this) is to connect to a bluetooth speaker I have. I bought the Creative D100 (awesome, btw) and it doesn't auto-connect to the phone. That's the way it's supposed to work (the device doesn't auto-connect so multiple people can connect at once to control it), but it means every time I want to connect to it I have to go into the Bluetooth menu and connect (it keeps the pairing). Would it be possible to configure a task to connect to a specific Bluetooth device and use it with an NFC tag? Then I could just put a tag on the speaker and make it easy.
hmmm...i may put one at the top of the stairs to explicitly switch to the upstairs WAP. I use the FiOS built in WAP for the lower level, but I have an N capable WAP upstairs. I have them on the same SSID etc. so the stuff can roam, but it does not always switch to the upstairs router when in range. I used to use Best Wifi to swtich, but it is flaky on the S4 for some reason. I can just stick a tag at the top of the stairs and force the switch.
I do a lot of driving on a sort-of commute, just not daily. I want my phone a certain way while driving:
1. Bluetooth on
2. Volumes maxed
3. Screen timeout at 3 minutes
4. Auto Rotation on
5. Brightness off auto and to 100%
6. Nav auto-launched
That's a lot of buttons and screens to sort through manually. But one touch to my NFC tag in the car and viola'. Everything's done. I have a tag on my key chain to reverse the process when I get out of the car. Brightness back to auto, timeout 30 seconds, rotation off, volumes back down to reasonable levels, bluetooth off.
I've also stashed some tags at a few of my favorite places...a bar, a restaurant, a few others. I just walk in, touch the spot where I stashed the tag and I'm checked in.
Yes, I stashed them in the bathrooms.
I bought some tags a year ago thinking that I'll be able to automate a lot of things, like toggle wifi, volume, BT etc.
But after a year, I found myself using AutomateIt (it's like Tasker) to do all of those things. It was a hassle to have to dig the phone out of my pocket, scan the tag, then put it back. With AutomateIt, I use Wifi access point connection status and time based automation. The phone just do the things that I want it to do, and I don't have to worry about it.

I wrote a post about this - here - I really only find nfc to be useful on a regular basis if you have the screen off mod...
to be honest, I haven't used nfc at all since getting the gs4. pity?
I wonder if Samsung will do another promotion like they did with the S3 where they gave a set of Free NFC tags away and a rubber case.

 That's true. It always confounds iPhone owners when I show them I can toggle 5 things on my Nexus 4 at once, and they're sitting there wondering how to do the same thing with their device,
Gotta fault Apple on that one for leaving out NFC on the iPhone 5.

ReTAG is interesting. It can use "hotel keycards, lift passes, price tags, merchandising key fobs etc." as tags.

And no, I haven't tried it. I need to find a tag to play with first.

Amazon too, but make sure the tags are NFC compliant otherwise it may not work with the S4.

I tried using Google Wallet twice now at stores and got burned looking like the jerk that was holding up the line trying to hover his phone over the pad. Ended up having to use my debit card, I think it will be really nice once they get more mainstream.
I will pick up some tags and see if I have better luck with those.
Aside from the basic conditional settings like brightness, system volume, WiFi toggling etc, all the fancy stuff I do pertains to audio. In the car when I scan my tag it does the following:
Toggles Bluetooth On
Pairs directly to my car Bluetooth device
Sets the Poweramp EQ to flat (so my car can do the EQ, not Poweramp)
Starts playing whatever was last playing
Second tap on the car tag:
Toggles GPS
Opens Google Maps
Then whenever I plug in my over the hear headphones it sets Poweramp's EQ to Bass Extreme and also sets Media volume to 25% (done through tasker, has nothing to do with NFC)
I have S9+ 965U1. Is anybody having issues with Smart Lock not keeping phone unlocked via location? When i add location, it shows the correct location via the GPS, correct home address. I've also manually added neighbors on all sides of me and it still rarely works. Same issue at work. I've been on every firmware available and its the same. Sometimes it works, maybe 10-20% of the time. My S8+ was just the opposite, it worked 80-90% of the time. I've done the figure 8 GPS calibration but that doesn't seem to help. Wondering if this is a common issue or if i should send it to Samsung. It would be nice if they gave the option to stay unlocked when connected via certain WiFi networks.
Trusted Location has never worked reliably on any Android phone I've used. That said, the "When At Home" routine in the "Routines" app that works with Good Lock 2018 does indeed work reliably.

Thank you I'll give that a try. I like the fact I can use wifi to unlock with it. Looks like a pretty robust program. I'll enjoy getting to know it. Hope it's not a resource or battery hog. Thanks again.
I still have my s8 and it's working almost every time with smart lock location. It most definitely works waaaay better than my S9. S7 I don't recall these issues either, it pretty much worked a high majority of the time like the 8. GPS hasn't given me any problems when navigating with maps on the 9. But smart lock location works 2 out of 10 times through many hours but never more than 4 when you have to use code or other. Maybe I'll send it in. I have the 8 to use while it's gone.

In Trusted Places click Home - from Google Maps - Turn off this place. Everything is OK right now. In all locations, incl. the car remains unlocked. I'm guessing this about Google's location error, as weather reports, for example, that I live on two streets next to the map, and the point is right on the map.

For me good lock routines (sep. 2018) does not work properly when I use action "unlock". I noticed that somehow my fingerprint stopped working and did not wake my phone when placing my finger. It got unlocked but I had to wake with home key... Maybe fixed with next version.
Went back to Google Smart lock and I have to say that it is now working really fine. Use this feature since my S6 where it was unreliable
