I have the unlocked U1 model and cannot figure out how to get the unread email count on the application icon. I'm able to get the new email notification count, but it goes away after opening the email app. On my S7 the unread count on the shortcut would stay until the emails were marked as read. I found a thread on the samsung forum with a similar issue, but haven't seen a fix for it.
I briefly flashed the Verizon firmware on my phone for testing some other items and from what I could tell the unread count worked properly. I'm thinking this could be limited to the unlocked model, but wanted to see if anyone else has seen this behavior.

I am having the same issue, i restart the phone and it fixed it but i dont want to do it all the time.
I have recently purchased an S3 and I am quite happy with it except it is showing one unread message and when you open messages there is not any unread messages.
I have managed to clear it by rebooting my phone and then when I receive another SMS it goes back one unread even though I have read.
How do I clear this annoyance.

Are you using the stock messaging app? I bet you're not... If you have a third-party SMS app, the stock messaging app will continue to register and notify about new messages received, even if they've been read in the third-party app.
To resolve this, just switch off notifications in the stock messaging app.
This is a bug in the firmware, it has been fixed you just need to wait for the OTA to be pushed to your phone

No. This is a problem with some S3s. Check this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1705015
My colleague had this issue and I played around with it on Friday without success but she says that the issue was resolved on Friday and she has received several messages and calls but the 1 is not stuck on the icon after reading the message anymore. I am at a loss as to what I did...
I apologize for posting this in the Galaxy S3 forum, but it may be more of an android problem so I am going to post it here.
I have a samsung galaxy s3 and the SMS counter is not counting.
I get the texxt messages just fine, but I receive no notification and no number on the counter.
I downloaded the handcent app and I get notifications, but still no counting or notification of how many texts are unread.
Please help?
Thanks
Mike
I use Hangouts as my default SMS app in my Nexus 5.
No matter what I do, all the themer widgets seem to think I have 2 unread SMS messages. I don't.
Is there any way I can get the themer widgets to show the correct unread count?
I've had the same problem a few times. You do actually have to unread messages somewhere. You may have archive them or deleted them.

What RED said is correct, also check that it isn't showing SMSs from other accounts.

I noticed this as well. It seems to be due to the Android SMS Messaging app on my phone showing the message as unread even though my current default sms app (hangouts) has no unread messages. the only way I have found to clear the unread flag is to set it the original sms app back to default then click on the message and read it then set hangouts back to deafault. Or once I've determined which thread is the culprit (via opening the default app, then going to hangouts and deleting that thread it clears the flag. Not ideal, since there's a reason for keeping history, but it keeps my OCD nature of having an unread message from having a fit.....
I would be interested if anyone has found a fix for this as opposed to my work around.

Thanks for the update! We'll pass it onto our devs. For now we don't have a fix, but an update should be released this week that may help.

Samsung S8 has a major issue with Oreo. The badge count disappears once I open the Whatsapp app or email, even though I do not open the messages or emails.
Thus I may have unread mails or unread whatsapp posts but since the badge count is zero, I am not able to keep a tab on it.
Samsung service centre refused to install Nougat which did not have this issue.
Any solution to this problem?
