Anyone having issues with Google Photos when using an external SD card? Unless I eject the card, I can't get Google Photos to upload or download any photos. It's either stuck on 'getting photos' (on first launch or after clearing data/cache) or 'waiting to upload' if I've reinserted the SD card after having first successfully set up the app with the SD card removed.
It's not playing nicely. So far, with the SD card inserted, the app is totally useless. I have a couple hundred GB on the SD card so I haven't formatted it.
Any thoughts?
Maybe this is a stupid question, but did you switch the write protection on your SD card? Regardless of its current position, just turn it the opposite.
My card has no such switch unfortunately..
Here's a workaround for the time being,
Make internal storage default photo saving location on your Camera. Move photos from your SD card DCIM folder to your internal DCIM folder, then finally un-mount the SD card. Your photos should start to upload to Google Photos.
I've reported this issue many times to google and they have done nothing about it so I just sort of given up on it. I just un-mount my SD card everytime I want to backup.
Yeah that's essentially what I've been doing. Which is a total PITA.
Interestingly I only had the option to save photos to the internal SD card after 7 days, the option became available about the same time as OEM Unlock.
No problems here. Using a 64GB SD with the camera set to save pictures on the card. Everything uploads fine.

Same here. Very pleased when I found that it worked as it did not work on my S7 Edge.
Samsung 128gb SD card in Verizon S9+. Google Photos can read and write to SD card without issue.

Well there's a glimmer of hope then. Did you guys format your card after inserting into your device? This is the only thing I haven't done. My card was initially formatted on a PC.

I used a brand new card and it did not require to be formatted. Google Photos asked for SD card permissions and that was that.

Mine was also formatted on a PC and used in an HTC 10. I reformatted it in my S9+ before using it.
Cool. Will reformat my card inside my device then and report back. Thanks for the responses.
Everything good here as well. Maybe delete app then re download it?
Formatting the SD Card inside my s9 immediately resolved this issue. Case closed.
Mine just grabs straight from the card, no issues at all...
Never mind. Overtaken by events.

Went to look at some pics off my SD card last night and realized that the phone had deleted them.
But what was weird, beside the fact that they got deleted, was that the phone didn't delete all my pictures. Out of about 200 pics, it deleted around 190 of them. Very strange.
Has this happened to anyone else??
Not I. The SD Card and the pictures contained should be virtually untouchable without direct user interaction. Did you possibly put them on the external SD? Are you trusting Gallery or did you check with a file manager as well? Lastly, have you used HTC sync or any other tool that could copy/backup these pictures(and maybe delete them after sync)
Same thing happened to me. Lost about 90% of my pics. Don't know how it happened. Was able to recover most of them using a program that is on hirem's boot cd.

I used ASTRO file manager to double check that the pictures were actually deleted.
I don't sync my phone with my computer so I don't know how the pictures would have been deleted.
Needless to say, it's very disconcerting that my SD card could be vulnerable to something like this. I can understand, somewhat, if it was the phones internal storage, but not my SD card.
Luckily I had backed up my SD card on my computer recently (copy and paste method) so I didn't lose too many pictures.

I would say keep your SD backed up and if it happens again exchange the phone.

as a backup method, you could use sugarsync. They have a 5gb free account and can back up all pictures and videos automatically.
Hey everybody, let me speak to this.
More than likely your pictures are NOT deleted.
This has happened to me several times. I'd open the gallery and would not see any of my pictures, save for a few that are on the Phone Storage.
All I did was 'unmount' and 'remount' the SD card in the settings menu under 'SD & Phone Storage.
I have not been able to pinpoint the exact cause of the external SD mount getting jacked, but it might be around the USB debugging, or setting your phone to usb disk drive mode.
Anyway, a quick unmount/remount, and all my pictures were back in the gallery. I hope the same works for you, good luck!
There was also an issue where if you where flashing boot.IMG through hboot they were being ereased. Check out dsb kernel thread over at team bamf.

I was just reading that thread!
I think they were talking about the internal card and not the external though. Still, something to watch out for. Always good to make a back up of everything before flashing.
How do I make sure when I move apps to my sd card, they dont go to my internal sd folder (ext_sd)
I do have a external sd card, but even-though I'm moving apps to my sd card, it seems to be empty

That behavior is by design and won't be easy to change it. If you root your phone and add some mods to it, you could store app on your external sd, but I think it's more work than what you get in return because you won't be filling up your internal sd before other things start to break. I am assuming you are storing everything else (i.e. music and photo files) on the external card, though.
thank you for clearing that out for me...

Hi guys,
I have a galaxy s2 with the latest AOKP rom installed. It's been working fine (except for GPS which got fixed once i swapped out the SIM card). I just came back from overseas and had a bunch of pictures on the phone. None of the pictures show up anymore. The SD Card had some pictures but they were old, and I should have a lot of pictures stored on the internal device.
I tried running recuva on just the sd card but they didn't come up. I only noticed that I had to reinstall 1 application so far because it wasn't working. Also, when I browse my phone using my computer, it seems like the root directory is missing a bunch of folders (I have hidden files to show).
Any ideas?
Not sure what had happen to your device. But the best course of action is to pull out your external microSD card and connect it to your computer directly to see if you can see the contents in that card. If yes, download them to your computer and back them up. Then format your microSD card with the phone, the phone should be able to read after that.
Once you have done that, if you can see all the rest of the pictures on your phone, transfer them to the external microSD and do the same thing and back those picture up.
Once the backup is done (if you are able to), then you can start working on fixing your GS2. Even if you have to reflash the ROM then you will have the data backup.

Thanks. I actually tried just that before I posted. Took out the card, put it in a usb adapter and plugged it into the computer. Ran recuva, pulled everything out, and formatted it. Still nothing =/
Have you tried plugging the phone into the computer?

Went on a trip overseas, saw the photos either before the plane ride home, or during.
Just had this happen to my gs3. Phone and sdcard in pc reader showed dcim and a couple other folders as empty that should not have been. When plugged into pc using mtp and/or usb by enabling/disabling usb debugging finally showed two sets of each folder. Seems like it couldnt read sdcard at some point so the apps created new folders when they shouldnt have. Copied dcim folder to my desktop but still cant read the files even though it shows them as large files like pics/videos would be.

This happened to me too. I rebooted my phone for some reason and when it booted up all my pics/images were gone. All the folders were still there but were empty. I managed to get everything back by taking out the SD card and putting it in my computer then used Recuva. Strange that Recuva didn't help you.

G,day all,
I got 32GB Samsung Micro SD card. I've been using it for last 4 months. Music and Personal pictures, videos filled 20GB out 30GB.
Suddenly my music start skipping the tract can't play this format. and then realized the pictures are not available either. in setting > storage the external sd is grayed out. as if nothing is inserted. I pulled the memory out n insert it back. restart my phone. still didn't work.
Tried on my laptop even laptop doesn't detect it. Used card reader still doesn't detect. any idea what to do ?
I should also add that the issue is with Micro SD card only. I tried different sd card it work well on the phone and laptop.
my pictures are my real worries. any suggestion would be appreciated.

Well the problem is SD card can't be detected even using Laptop.
Download the sd formating tool, if that won't format it then the card is faulty and needs to be replaced. I had the same thing happen with a ten month old card, the supplier replaced it without quibble.

Hi there
I rooted my phone and also installed TWRP on my HTC and I have noticed that my phone seems to be corrupting the photos that I take, but it doesn't corrupt them immediately. It can take a few hours but they end up getting corrupted. I store my photos on my SD card and I have never had a problem with it before, the card is still relatively new.
I'm still running the stock ROM
The photos were automatically backed up so I have the original versions and I have attached them to the post with the corresponding corrupted versions that appear on my phone
What's happening? Have I made a bollocks of the phone?

That's strange. I'm probably not the one to solve the mystery but when you say sd card, you mean your external micro sd? Have you tried swapping out the sd card?
I was surprised to see an android phone couldn't rw ext 4; had to reformat fat32. But I don't get how they seem to gradually corrupt??? Are you using something like link2sd or was there a recent app you installed that preceeded this behavior?

Yeah I'm using an external SD card
I'll try swapping out the card and see if it makes a difference.
It's really weird that they're fine just after I take them and then like 2 hours later it seems that only the thumbnail is left or there's nothing at all.
When you say reformat to fat32, does that mean wipe everything off it?
I'm not using any strange apps, just the default camera app on the stock ROM
I noticed that my viber pictures were not displaying this weird behaviour so I looked and they're stored on the phone, so I changed my camera to store the pictures on my phone memory and took a few test photos. So far they have not been corrupted and seem fine. Although I think that the quality of the pictures has dropped
Seems like it might be the SD card after all

Yes. If you format it to anything even the current format, it will be wiped. Sd cards get corrupted a lot. That's your most likely culprit. Not sure if it'll fix your issues but probably the easiest thing to start with. Hope it works for you!
Thanks for your help dude, I really appreciate it
