Hi there
I rooted my phone and also installed TWRP on my HTC and I have noticed that my phone seems to be corrupting the photos that I take, but it doesn't corrupt them immediately. It can take a few hours but they end up getting corrupted. I store my photos on my SD card and I have never had a problem with it before, the card is still relatively new.
I'm still running the stock ROM
The photos were automatically backed up so I have the original versions and I have attached them to the post with the corresponding corrupted versions that appear on my phone
What's happening? Have I made a bollocks of the phone?

That's strange. I'm probably not the one to solve the mystery but when you say sd card, you mean your external micro sd? Have you tried swapping out the sd card?
I was surprised to see an android phone couldn't rw ext 4; had to reformat fat32. But I don't get how they seem to gradually corrupt??? Are you using something like link2sd or was there a recent app you installed that preceeded this behavior?

Yeah I'm using an external SD card
I'll try swapping out the card and see if it makes a difference.
It's really weird that they're fine just after I take them and then like 2 hours later it seems that only the thumbnail is left or there's nothing at all.
When you say reformat to fat32, does that mean wipe everything off it?
I'm not using any strange apps, just the default camera app on the stock ROM
I noticed that my viber pictures were not displaying this weird behaviour so I looked and they're stored on the phone, so I changed my camera to store the pictures on my phone memory and took a few test photos. So far they have not been corrupted and seem fine. Although I think that the quality of the pictures has dropped
Seems like it might be the SD card after all

Yes. If you format it to anything even the current format, it will be wiped. Sd cards get corrupted a lot. That's your most likely culprit. Not sure if it'll fix your issues but probably the easiest thing to start with. Hope it works for you!
Thanks for your help dude, I really appreciate it

Just an update to anyone who might come across the same issue
Formatting the external SD card seemed to fix my problem

First time happened was back in about a month ago. One day I noticed some of my pictures were gone ( may be 15 to 20 of them ) I could not find them in any where such as SD card internal/external the strange thing was some pictures still there until today so the defective SD card is ruled out and I was still using the stock firmware 2.3.3 then I also noticed there are other pictures ( almost 100 of them ) not actual pictures they just blank but all with different file names like: My piano, A day in Hollywood etc, etc.
No body has been messing up my phones because it stays with me at all times. The question is who deleted my pictures and put a bunch of files back? Could it be happened remotely like some one using Bluetooth to mess around if the person is happened to be near by? later on I upgraded my phone to 2.3.4 through KIES and hope it will help me to solve the mystery but it did not. By now I know those pictures are long gone...
Two or three days later I upgraded my phone to 2.3.5 until I found the official FW XWKL1 here in XDA, again, upgraded.
So some days later I decided to change song for my ringtone I found out all of them have been replaced by some files with number names. 41203,41204 the list go on...When I use Astro to look for my songs and they are all there ( inside the music folder ) I went back & click one of the number file to see what kind of song and the player pops up a message saying the file format is not supported. It took me almost 30 min to figure out and delete all the number files under MUSIC then I see all my songs back.
My question is has my phone been hacked or infected by viruses/spyware? Or software glitch? I don't have data plan. To go online I use my home wifi all the time.
If some one can help I'll be really appreciated.
Sounds like a problem with the sd card or phone itself.

But most of the pictures and songs are still there that was why I think the problem is not in SD card other than these problems the phone is functioning good in all aspect.
Highly doubt someones in ur phone.

Sounds like the card is corrupted. Just make a backup of everything on the card, and do a full format (not quick format) of it from your computer. That should fix it. I had a similar problem too recently. New files I transferred would get deleted and old deleted files would reappear. Maybe the file table is messed or something, I don't know, but a full format fixed it for me.
Note: Preferably use a card reader, or if you mount it as mass storage from your phone, do it from recovery if you're rooted. Otherwise just mount it as you would normally and proceed.

How do I make sure when I move apps to my sd card, they dont go to my internal sd folder (ext_sd)
I do have a external sd card, but even-though I'm moving apps to my sd card, it seems to be empty

That behavior is by design and won't be easy to change it. If you root your phone and add some mods to it, you could store app on your external sd, but I think it's more work than what you get in return because you won't be filling up your internal sd before other things start to break. I am assuming you are storing everything else (i.e. music and photo files) on the external card, though.
thank you for clearing that out for me...
well , seems htc is not the phone I thought it was...

Anyone having issues with Google Photos when using an external SD card? Unless I eject the card, I can't get Google Photos to upload or download any photos. It's either stuck on 'getting photos' (on first launch or after clearing data/cache) or 'waiting to upload' if I've reinserted the SD card after having first successfully set up the app with the SD card removed.
It's not playing nicely. So far, with the SD card inserted, the app is totally useless. I have a couple hundred GB on the SD card so I haven't formatted it.
Any thoughts?
Maybe this is a stupid question, but did you switch the write protection on your SD card? Regardless of its current position, just turn it the opposite.
My card has no such switch unfortunately..
Here's a workaround for the time being,
Make internal storage default photo saving location on your Camera. Move photos from your SD card DCIM folder to your internal DCIM folder, then finally un-mount the SD card. Your photos should start to upload to Google Photos.
I've reported this issue many times to google and they have done nothing about it so I just sort of given up on it. I just un-mount my SD card everytime I want to backup.
Yeah that's essentially what I've been doing. Which is a total PITA.
Interestingly I only had the option to save photos to the internal SD card after 7 days, the option became available about the same time as OEM Unlock.
No problems here. Using a 64GB SD with the camera set to save pictures on the card. Everything uploads fine.

Same here. Very pleased when I found that it worked as it did not work on my S7 Edge.
Samsung 128gb SD card in Verizon S9+. Google Photos can read and write to SD card without issue.

Well there's a glimmer of hope then. Did you guys format your card after inserting into your device? This is the only thing I haven't done. My card was initially formatted on a PC.

I used a brand new card and it did not require to be formatted. Google Photos asked for SD card permissions and that was that.

Mine was also formatted on a PC and used in an HTC 10. I reformatted it in my S9+ before using it.
Cool. Will reformat my card inside my device then and report back. Thanks for the responses.
Everything good here as well. Maybe delete app then re download it?
Formatting the SD Card inside my s9 immediately resolved this issue. Case closed.
Mine just grabs straight from the card, no issues at all...
Never mind. Overtaken by events.
Having had a quick look through this forum's threads, it doesn't seem that this is an issue other people are having - but I got this phone a few weeks ago. Used it at a show I went to and I was really excited to share all of the photos and videos I'd taken but then found later in the night that they had all been deleted from the SD card. This doesn't happen when saving files to the internal memory, but I am still getting error messages.
Sometimes when I open the camera app, I get an error saying "SD card unavailable". When opening the camera app a second time, I don't have this issue.
I have already changed the SD card as I thought initially that this was the problem. I have used a file recovery program and though all files have been deleted from the DCIM/100ANDRO folder, only the last few photos that I took with the first SD card are recoverable, which makes me think that all the previous photos and videos I'd taken were probably saved but have then been deleted for whatever reason.
I'm using Android 10 (55.1.A.0.748) with NOBA customisation (though I started encountering this issue when using the phone at the end of November so I'm pretty sure I was using Android 9 at that point). I've not tried a software repair yet as I don't know if it will fix the issue and was hoping that someone else may have also experienced the same problem and can offer a nicer solution.
What type of formatting are you using in sdcard?
FAT32, EXFAT?
Test using a program on your computer, if possible using a memory card adapter only.
This kind of error I already saw and was due to a faulty sdcard.

I thought the problem might be with the memory card or the file system too but it's happening with two brand new memory cards, both formatted with the phone itself. Also the only data that was deleted was in the DCIM/100ANDRO folder; everything else was fine. Would you expect that to occur if the fault was with the memory card? Considering how much other data was on it, I'd have expected to already be experiencing problems in other apps if the memory card was the issue. I still get the error message when the phone's internal memory is selected in the camera app.
This is the directory that the camera application accesses.
Probably a problem reading instruction to write data to memory card.
That's why I suggested you test the card using some memory analysis program on your computer.
Try H2TESTW.

The memory cards are fine. The problem is with the phone, but is it a software issue or a hardware issue?
I am recommending it because I have come across the problem you described.
But the error message also occurs when using the internal storage ?
Then try reinstalling the software from scratch using Xperia Companion.

The whole point of my asking on here was to try and avoid doing that but it doesn't sound like you've encountered this error in the same set of circumstances as me.
I am in urgent need of help. I have a non-rooted Mate 20 Pro with a nano memory card. Today I noticed all my photos and videos are gone from the memory card.
All the folders are still there just empty, all my files and music is still there just my photos and videos are not.
I tried connecting it to a computer and the same thing. Empty folders,
I'm not sure what happened as they were all there earlier. I didn't use my phone or do anything out of the ordinary for this to happen.
Im on EMUI 10 currently. I took the memory card out and downgraded back to 9.1 to see if the software was the issue but same thing.
I also tried opening the files in different apps to see if they would show up but nothing.
My memory card still shows the same amount of memory being used as it did before.
I also tried to unhide folders, look into the safe but nothing!
At this point I am quite upset
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

It is probably the most obvious assume you have rebooted?
Have you mistakenly ejected the card? If not try ejecting from settings and reinsert.
Are you using stock gallery viewer? Does it need update?
These are the most common/obvious actions, don't have anything else to add if tried and didn't work.

Yes, I have rebooted. I even unmounted it and reset the phone then put it back in and nothing.
I am using stock gallery, I believe it's already updated.
Weirdly all my files and music are still there along with the folders. Just my pictures and videos are gone. I looked to see if they were hidden but they're not. They won't show on the computer either.
I'm not sure what could have possibly happened. They were there in the morning and then they disappeared. I didn't take the card out or anything.
Are there apps that could somehow erase all your photos and videos if you install them. I can't think of anything else it could have been. I've never had any problems until now.
The newest thing I have done is update do EMUI 10 but even after the update everything was still there until the other day when they just disappeared on me.
Do you use Google Photos App? If Yes, see if you can find the missing photos and video with in Google Photos. Google Photos once uploaded will remove the local storage.

I tried. Nothing. There are some .hidden or .outside files in some of the folders. I tried to set it to show hidden files just in case but it still didn't pop up.
I'm going to try getting a nano card reader to see if maybe the phone is somehow doing something to the card. In the meantime I'm no longer using so no more damage gets done just in case.
Try sd card recovery, either on phone or on pc.
