I only said it can't be unlocked by s1tool, didn't wrote that you can still use official way from sony dev page, I thought it goes without saying, but now I edited my post.
Actually it has been said on the link I put in that post.
Though I don't know how it goes with other online paid tools like omnius or wotanserver.

I'm a total Sony noob. I ditched the galaxy note line and my beloved galaxy mega in return for my xperia ultra. Stupidly I let it update to the latest firmware (. 257) now it seems I'm stuck without a root method. I've searched around xda and it seems the only way to root my ultra is to unlock the bootloader wiping my drm keys from the ta partition. So I have the choice between having root or having x reality, Sony apps and a warrantee. Can someone please confirm if this is correct? is or will there be another way?
Android without root may as well be ios and I don't want to have to get out the mega and demote my ultra to 'work phone' status
Thanks, James
This might be correct at the present time. Previously in your situation we were doing this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2502185. However i believe Vroot has been pulled, at least for now, due to potentially beimg malware. Haven't heard any news on that for a while now tho.

Thank you. I thought an unlocked bootloader was required to downgrade but I'm not really concerned about the vroot imei harvesting so i would be willing to give this a try.

Hi James,
Let me give you the 411 on Sony devices.
Firstly Sony devices are almost impossible to brick. The only real way to brick your phone is to try and do an update when the battery is at 10% or something, and the battery goes totally flat.
(then it wont be able to hold charge, so will basically be a SD storage device that cannot retain information)
Unlocking bootloader- This is something you will probably want to do, but at a later date. The only real advantage of this is that modified kernels and ROM's can be flashed. At the moment x-reality isn't lost when you unlock your bootloader. But track ID is lost.
- You can undo this
Root - It's highly unlikely that IMEI numbers were harvested. They were ready, but we don't know anything else.
- You can undo root
Backing up your TA partition - (done after Rooting) This is done so if something goes wrong, then you are able to re-flash your TA partition, and restore your device back to stock, and still be covered under your warranty. Inside this partition, is a store of device information. DRM keys, IMEI, MAC address... etc.
- You can undo this
Recovery - Im sure you know this...
Essentially what every you do you can undo. Sony are really dev friendly. Kind of what Samsung used to be like.

howdid you have root?
one question...if vroot is really a bad thing...can i just use it just to:
1.get root
2. back up TA
3.get recovery
4.install the this

Link doesn't work. Yes, you can get root, back up your TA, get recovery aaand I don't know what that link does, so I don't know. But you can install SuperSU and remove the root app from vRoot. Keep in mind that it's not the vRoot root app that's suspicious but the desktop app.
Still, we have no idea at this point so you can either root and live with it or you can wait it out and see what the investigation brings up.

I used the vroot method. Nothing is confirmed and for me I felt it was worth the risk
Does anyone have a TWRP or CWM recovery image that can be flashed and booted on. 257? Or do you have to flash the CWM kernel, flash any zips you want, then reflash the .257 kernel in order to boot up and run? Is the recovery always tied to the kernel on this device? A lotta questions, i know

Yeah, you can use SuperSU instead. It looks like Kingo has updated their app now and removed the IMEI "collector", so I would rather use Kingo than vRoot.

even without root..we can still flash the old 532 fw just to gain access to root right?
and then what? maybe use OTA Root Keeper to keep root?

Root is now available for our lovely 6P!
Flash TWRP from here
Flash the boot image from here (angler-mdb08k-boot.zip)
Flash the latest SuperSU beta from here
then you'll be good to go!
Does it require a custom kernel? I couldn't find mention of it in the link. Also, what the heck is a "boot image?" I know bootloader, recovery, and kernel. Do we now have another thing to consider?
Cool... Can any1 confirm though that rooting wont effect fingerprint sensor working..... I don't really care for Android pay

Is there already a way to unroot? Also I hope we don't lose any data while rooting and then unrooting.

If you just reflash the stock system image that would erase any trace of root. You wouldn't lose any data. You'll only be able to flash the root zip/kernel if you've already unlocked your bootloader. If you've not done that you'll have to do it first and the process of unlocking will wipe the device.

Um? Don't think we're quite there yet?
.
Quote from Chainfire.
Acquiring root without modifying the boot images is still under investigation. Please note that the current method will not be officially supported. Future roots may require a clean system: we are at a very early stage of root for 6.0, methods used are subject to change.

I'd download the factory image and update to the latest build. you can edit the "flash-all.bat" so that it doesn't wipe your phone. Change the command
"fastboot -w update" to
"fastboot update"
to preserve your data.
I have re-opened this thread, because the linked thread isn't the same - this isn't a duplicate.
"4. How To Root Your Stock Rom
This section will be revisited when more information is available."
This thread presents something new.

Just boot loops for me , even with Chainfire's boot.img. Is it necessary to do the steps one right after another?
Neat! Glad it is all happening quickly. I think I want to keep encryption, so I will probably wait to root and install TWRP until wiping data to remove encryption is no longer necessary.
Can someone please confirm if the damn fingerprint sensor still works after rooting?
Anyone knows how Google Pay works on rooted phone, I hate bringing my wallet OMG life is unfair you can't get everything haha. I asked question because I don't want to try and find a way myself because it is rooted and to want to pay Funky Huawei for unbriking my phone and they emailed me that if I use their service and made a mistake in the process that they will not provide support and just buy credit again and try again wtf!

GPay working on my rooted-with-Magisk-16.0, dual-sim BLA-L29 M10P that's been re-branded to BLA-A09, US release firmware. regarding FunkyHuawei, true it's a personal choice to use their service and there might be other options to consider. i soft-bricked my device twice experimenting with re-branding and each time i was able to recover with their tools.

You can use the flash/rebrand guide to reinstall your fw version. https://forum.xda-developers.com/mate-10/how-to/guide-mate-10-flash-oreo-update-package-t3716814
For the download fw part, just search for your firmware on hwmt. Then in the FullOTA row click on the "File list" link and a pop-up with direct links will show, copy and paste the 3 links (there are separate links for L29 and L09 hw data, select the one your phone is) one by one into a new tab of your browser and download. Rename as the guide says, follow the Flash Update part. If you want to root again using Magisk select No when it asks to Lock bootloader.
Then you can use the same guide to flash Magisk. Or if you have a Mate 10 Pro you could flash TWRP and flash Magisk using ADB sideload, it doesn't matter which you choose. Or stay stock.

Have you tried Odin to do the flashing? While not the same device, I have rooted my SM-A526B without TWRP by patching the boot image with Magisk and then copying over the patched boot.img file to a computer, then finally flashed it over using Odin.
I have played with TWRP and Odin in the past with other phones; But I don't feel comfortable experimenting with this phone since it's my only source of work right know. After the process is proved ok by other people with the exact same model as mine, I can't risk experimenting like I have done other times.

This won't work on Samsung "U" variant phones because of their locked bootloader. Once you modify boot.img with Magisk, the phone will automatically detect it as custom firmware and it won't allow it to be flashed because of locked BL.
