How to Root & Install Custom recovery on V30+ H930DS (Indian Variant)? - LG V30 Questions & Answers

Hi All, I recently got my new LG V30+ H930DS Indian Variant. I searched the forum but could not found exact info how we can root and install custom recovery on the same?
Can someone please help me out here?
Sorry I am coming back to LG after 3 yrs of gap.. The LG device I used last time was LG Optimus G Pro..
Thanks a ton!

I'm sorry, you can't. If that is important to you, you bought the wrong V30/V30+ without researching first. Only H930, H930G (some of them), and open market LG US998 have unlocked bootloader (via the LG Bootloader Unlock website) with full fastboot flash commands. We've been telling people this since September 2017. The open market US998 V30+ should also have bootloader unlock and doesn't -- but that's another story.
The T-Mobile guys are still working on getting root for the H932 -- which has unlocked bootloader, but not full flash commands available. But all other variants like the H930DS have locked down bootloader.
I own both the open market US998 V30 and the V30+. One has root, the other doesn't. And yet the unrooted one right now is my daily driver, so it's a great phone even without root. Just change the launcher to Nova, add custom icon packs, use an add blocker like Blokada.
If you have updated to Oreo already, you can even use substratum themes. (I can't, yet, as I don't have Oreo yet.)

Dude.. In India, we get only one variant.. What could I do??

"Dude.. In India, we get only one variant.. What could I do??"
Well, you could have researched H930DS bootloader unlock and root here on XDA, so you would know beforehand instead of asking later.
No, you aren't limited to buying in India. My last phones before this (2014-2017) I bought from other countries, not the country where I live. I've seen people who bought other V30 who live in India.
My rooted V30 phone is not my daily driver, so the unrooted V30+ is still very good.
Anyway, I've answered your question.

Is there a way to rebrand the Korean V300K to the European H930DS?

Hi,
I recently got the V30+ for a really cheap price but I got the Korean KT version. So my question is if it's possible to rebrand it to the open European version?
Thanks for your answers.

The word you are looking for is not re-brand but convert. You want to convert it to H930.
You could do it with custom LGUP file -- convert one V30 variant to another -- but you would lose cellular connectivity and would at most only have Wi-Fi. There are people who do this for development reasons, convert one variant to another, but it's only on temporary basis while they do what's needed -- then they flash it back. With the V20 one dev created a method to flash to another variant firmware that wasn't patched yet for Dirty Santa. They were able to convert AT&T V20 to another V20 model, unlock bootloader, install TWRP -- then use that TWRP to flash back to TWRP-flashable zipped AT&T firmware, and still retain unlocked bootloader and TWRP custom recovery.
During that time the AT&T V20 was "temporarily" recognized as another V20, their SIM card didn't work, they had no cellular connectivity -- but they still had Wi-Fi and could sideload stuff.
This is actually a method being considered to root the T-mobile H932 V30:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=75196964&postcount=296
But it won't help you, because it's only meant to be a temporary stage. You would lose important functionality.

Keep reading, I'm taking care of the boring stuff first.
1) I'm answering your question here in the Q&A section. Please do not ask general questions about a phone in custom ROM thread. Your question has nothing to do with that ROM, where you posted your question.
2) This is the V30 forum, not the V35 forum -- but your phone may be an exception. I'll explain in a second.
3) Kingo root app? Please. Nothing like that is going to bootloader unlock and root a V30 or V35. It's only going to try to infest your phone with malware and send your IMEI back to China. There's no such thing as 1-click roots for V30, V35, G7.
4) If you were interested in rooting your phone you would have researched here on XDA first before buying the phone. There are many phones which do not have root and will never have root (2015 Kinzie Verizon Droid Turbo 2, for instance.) Even when seemingly guaranteed root, like with LG's "open market" US998 V30/V30+, LG broke it's implied promises. Only thanks to their wonderful Oreo bootloader unlock exploit which @TxanMoe found does every V30/V30+/V30S -- except T-mobile H932 -- have bootloader unlock and root. Point is, don't buy a phone without researching first. Don't buy a phone, then come to XDA to find out whether it can or can't be rooted.
5) Now the good stuff. Japan LG phones are DIFFERENT. They demand different model numbers, sometimes different specs. Japan also still uses the 4G WiMax protocol, besides using the 4G LTE protocol. (Google if you don't know what WiMax is.) The Japan LG V20 was called the LG "V34", and had different (smaller) dimensions from the LG V20. Internally it was an LG V20, but for the Japanese market it was V34 (isai Beat).
Japan-exclusive LG V34 is a 5.2" waterproof version of the V20
The isai Beat keeps everything that’s awesome about the V20 - the secondary always on screen, the dual-camera on the back, the dual-FoV selfie cam, the quad-DAC setup, B&O branding, Android 7.0 Nougat on Snapdragon 820 with 4GB of RAM and 32GB storage.
Except, of course, the screen is 5.2" big rather than 5.7" big. Despite the smaller size, the phone kept the (presumably removable) 3,000mAh battery.
It is a mini version of the LG V20, except a little better since it is IP67 waterproof while the V20 doesn’t have even basic splash resistance.

It was ONLY released in Japan.
What does that have to do with YOUR 2017 "V35" phone? The Japanese V20 was called the V34. The 2017 Japanese V30+ is called the "V35". It is completely different from the 2018 LG V35 released here in the U.S. and to AT&T, B&H Photo, and Google Fi. The Japanese "V35" was released last November 2017 to Japan with Oreo already installed, and is exclusive to Japan. It's a V30+ for Japan market called "V35", as the successor to the V34.
If you go here, to LG.com website for Japan (note this is OFFICIAL LG website!), and use Google translate....
https://www.lg.com/jp/mobile-phone/lg-LGV35
You will see it's a 128GB V30+ with 4GB RAM and Snapdragon 835.
Towards the bottom they even mention the free VR goggles promotion for the V30+:
Let's experience the latest VR, Daydream with V30 + as soon as possible !!

So, your phone is really a V30+, it really is JOAN (not the JUDYP of the other 2028 V35). It possibly can be bootloader unlocked and rooted, and use @SGCMarkus JOAN TWRP for V30.
And yes, this is totally confusing for all the other 2018 V35 owners who have been correctly told their phone is NOT a V30 and is totally different. But using one of the CPU type apps on Google Play, you can easily see the difference is YOUR phone has Snapdragon 835 and the other 2018V35 (AT&T, Google Fi) have Snapdragon 845.
6) I had researched a little about the Japanese 2017 V35 before and thought the Japanese press was mistaken in calling it a V30+ when it was released. I thought it was just the first of the V35 which were then released here in the U.S. a few months later. No, from the LG.com website the the Japanese "V35" is indeed a V30+.
How do you bootloader unlock and root it? How do you carrier unlock it? You would have revert back KDZ with pre-July 2018 security patch for bootloader unlock and root, IF your phone has fastboot flash commands. If it doesn't then you would have to Frankenstein (convert) your V30+ to a carrier unlocked H930DS, which does has fastboot flash commands. That would also carrier unlock it, if it doesn't totally brick it. I assume you don't need the WiMax 4G stuff? Only LTE? Being "exclusive" Japanese, it might have some of the complications the Korean V30/V30+ variants have. They have to flash to H930, bootloader unlock and root, then flash to US998 to get modem back working.
Good luck!
7) You have an interesting phone -- but if it's carrier locked to a Japanese network you don't use, then it's not much use to you. Theoretically, you can bootloader unlock it, and possibly carrier unlock it. But it's going to be a lot of work and there's probability you will brick your phone. I really don't know about the Japanese V30+ variants... Whereas, you can buy "mint" LS998 V30+ on eBay for a little over US$300 and easily Frankenstein them to carrier unlocked US998 V30+, bootloader unlock and root them. See point #4. Research FIRST before buying a phone.
Japanese LGV35 is NOT "LG V35", it is named "isai V30+ (LGV35)"
LGV35 is Japanese career au's model numbers, not product name.
https://www.au.com/mobile/product/smartphone/lgv35/

So, Japanese localized "isai V30+ (LGV35)" = Global "LG V30+"

LGV34 is Japanese career au's model numbers, not product name.

Exactly what I said. Japan LG V35 is really a V30+. You even posted some of the same links I posted. By the way, LG chooses model numbers -- like H930, H932, H930G, US998, LS998, VS996, H930DS, so LG also chose LGV35 -- NOT the carrier. U.S. Cellular AND open market variants are both US998. US Cellular did NOT choose that, LG did. LG also chose LGV35 for this Japanese carrier. Just as US998 is sometimes written as US 998, and LS998 is written as LS 998, LGV35 can be written as LG V35.

It's called the "LG V35" throughout the article and I can show a dozen more news articles writing it exactly the same way.
You can write it however you like -- LGV35, LG V35 -- but LG ALSO released V35 model number months later to AT&T, Google Fi, as a completely different phone series -- so it's confusing. LG should have called the later 2018 Snapdragon 845 JUDYP something else besides V35. That name was already taken!
At least two other people have posted here about their Japanese LG V35, so it is confusing, when we keep having to tell people the OTHER V35 is not the V30 -- but there's this one exception!

IF it's compatible, you'd have to flash another V30/V30+ KDZ to carrier unlock and get fastboot flash commands, by using dev patched LGUP. I do not know if any other V30 KDZ are compatible.
Basically you have to Frankenstein it to another V30/V30+. However, if it's not RSA encryption compatible, you run risk of bricking your phone.
For example, Korean carrier variants flash to H930 KDZ, unlock the bootloader, root, then have to flash US998 to get modem back.
But T-Mobile H932 is not RSA encryption compatible with other North American variants, so cannot Frankenstein to anything.
I really can't advise you to do that, that's your decision if want to risk bricking your phone.

I mentioned it in this post:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=76325684&postcount=42
Just remember that post was written back in April 2018, when we were still figuring out the Frankenstein method. But these "boxes" were allowing online sellers and online unlockers to convert V30 phones to OTHER variants seemingly willy nilly. We found LS998 V30+ which had been converted to Canadian H933 V30+. Canada H933 doesn't officially have a V30+! Just like there's no VS996 V30+! But you can make one.
Once we figured out the PC based Frankenstein system with dev patched LGUP, then we could do almost the same thing ourselves. Since then, I even bought two mint LS998 V30+ myself and converted them to US998 V30+.
But when I made that post I expressed severe reservations about buying LS998 in the first place -- since they were SIM card locked to Sprint. Like I said, we didn't know everything we know now, and I've changed my mind on the topic.
Whether one of these boxes could help you or not. My understanding is it basically does what dev patched LGUP does. Maybe it does it more automatically and there's less chance for error? I don't know.

All H930DS KDZ are compatible with each other. Yes, there are some differences, like Open ESA region has India Jio Volte, and others don't.
If you're phone is compatible with other dual SIM KDZ, you could flash something like the Hong Kong KDZ. Just...
make sure You're flashing pre-July 2018 Oreo firmware.
make sure it has the word "OPEN" in the title (that link above is to H930DS20n_00_OPEN_HK_DS_OP_0416.kdz).
make sure you're flashing dev patched LGUP in DL Partition mode, with all partitions. See that link post for attached file -- dev patched LGUP, as well as instructions for installation and use. But I would probably suggest the Hong Kong KDZ to actually flash, IF you decide to do this.
But I'm warning you that you may brick your phone phone. This decision is totally up to you.

What LG V30 I have?

I know this might be the dumbest of questions, but searching the webs gives no straight answer. I have doubts on to which exact model I have. These are the details:
-I bought it apparently refurbished, almost spotless (one little blue pixel in the corner).
-There was a sticky note that said LG ls998 made in Korea.
-However, cpuz says LG us998, joan_nao_us.
-Back says v30+, internal is 128gb.
I just want to be sure before attempting any procedure. Thank you in advance.

You don't say what firmware you have, Oreo or Nougat. Does the firmware in About Phone say US99810D or at least start with US998?
Did you buy it from YYWIRELESS on eBay?
Sounds like you have a former Sprint LS998 V30+ -- which the seller has Frankenstein converted to carrier unlocked US998 V30+. Nothing wrong with that. Carrier unlocked US998 has a lot of advantages over LS998, like fastboot flash commands and it's not locked to Sprint.
Did they flash Oreo or leave it on Nougat? Flashing US998 Nougat is the first step, and for some reason this seller (if you bought it from them) in at least two cases just stops there and doesn't flash Oreo.
Still, they've done the hardest part for you.
Sent via open market LG US998 V30/V30+
Did you check the IMEI number? That should give you the OEM designation for the device.

Firmware says US99820b, Oreo 8.0.0 with security patch level from May 1st. While messing with it, I think I recall reading sprint somethingsomething even though I see no sprint apps anywhere, so you are most likely right. Thus, I need to read about ls998 frankensteined into us998 in order to be aware of whichever procedure not to perform. Any advice?
IMEI shows many possible devices, I can't use it to verify the exact model, but thanks.

Good that if your phone was Frankensteined, they took you all the way to Oreo. Also, good they left you on 20B (Pre-July 2018 firmware), in case you want to bootloader unlock and root.

No, if you have US99820b, for all intents and purposes it's US998. Even in Frankensteined from Sprint LS998, it's now a US998.
We found out the AT&T H931 and Canadian H933 that were Frankensteined -- while they could be bootloader unlocked and rooted, they can run only stock firmware or stock-based ROMs. They can't boot and run AOSP ROMs for some reason. But former LS998 does not have that restriction.
Then I can safely proceed with any and all instructions addressed to US998. Thank you for your time and support. Mods can now close/delete the thread. Best regards!

LG V30 H931 AT&T model cannot update O.S.

My phone LG V30 H931 black AT&T model
i bought in dubai as 2nd hand phone and now
im trying to update OTA it says " Your device is already updated " . i have checked in AT&T software official site and the device has available update for July 2019 security patch. My phone security patch is still last July 2018 since i purchased it.
I also tried LG bridge computer update but it shows " LG bridge cannot detect your device O.S. " does it mean im stuck in 8.0 Oreo ? weird, i have a korean version LG V40 and connecting to Lg bridge has no problem it detects the current OS of my V40 LGU + model.
So i realized it maybe because my phone is AT&T model , USA based phone and im not using at&t sim nor network since im in Dubai now
Now question ,is there any other solution to update into android Pie 9.0? or should i just. sell my phone and better buy another V30 or V35 korean version which has no problem in updating O.S. rather than USA based phones which are restricted . thanks

Months ago, I wrote a Guide for AT&T H931 and Sprint LS998 which can't update, if you are not AT&T or Sprint customer. It tell HOW to update them.

No, doesn't have Pie yet, but soon will. They will get Pie. But this question is not really about Pie, this is about updating H931 at all. There's only one way to do that, if you are not an AT&T customer. I tell how in the Sticky.
I've answered this question two or three dozen times and people just keep creating new threads to ask again. Thought sure the Sticky would help and maybe it has.

Device being carrier unlocked (by some code) has nothing to do with getting carrier-approved updates only allowed for that carrier's customers.
AT&T and Sprint don't want you using their devices on other networks, and if you do, they punish you. They also don't care about AT&T/Sprint customers who may sell their phones on eBay to non-customers.
There is a solution. Read the sticky.

Only AT&T H931 and Sprint LS998 are ostensibly restricted. There's a way around the restriction, explained in the sticky.
Neither carrier release public KDZ for their updates. They will only do FOTA (Firmware Over The Air) for customers who have their SIM cards.
This is why LG Bridge won't work for H931 or LS998, because you can capture the URL to the LG Server and post it publicly. We do this all the time in the OTHER variant KDZ threads, where you can download KDZ straight from LG Servers. AT&T and Sprint won't allow that.

So this is a lesson learned from me and i strongly advised to all foreigners like me who wants to buy 2nd hand LG phones ,better buy korean variants or international version, avoid US based carrier brand phones.
Sk telekom, LG U + this korean variants are way better ,no restriction any country u go u can update the O.S.

* I've already explained it's not all U.S. carrier phones. However, if you research you will know AT&T and Sprint LG phones do not give updates to non-customers, nor do they publicly release KDZ update files. Those two carriers only release FOTA (firmware over the air) to customers.
* Most everyone here in this forum uses or has used LGUP. It's not risky if you just read the directions.
Many people on different LG variants don't get OTA updates (like India H930DS) and even my wife's native US998 -- and it's not because they aren't U.S. carrier customers. So they come here to get updates, and manually install them via Dev Patched LGUP.
For everyone else with AT&T H931 or Sprint LS998, here's the answer:

LS998 or US998

I found this on ebay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/LG-V30-US9...D4AAOSwqj9beX9a:sc:USPSFirstClass!95132!US!-1
I was wondering if this was an actual US998 or a flashed LS998 because some of the feedback claims that this is a LS998. I see 1,800 units were sold so I'm hoping there's atleast one person on this forum who also bought from this seller. Also, I am on T-mobile, so I was wondering how it would affect the functionality of the phone if it were a LS998.

Doesn't matter. I've had both native US998 V30+ and converted US998 V30+ (former LS998)
Once converted, its fully US998. For T-Mobile or AT&T it will work. However, for Verizon, you would need an already-activated SIM card or a very helpful rep willing to break the rules.
I've bought from that seller several times. My brother-in-law, sister, couple of friends are all using former LS998 converted to US998 from that specific seller.

Hi, I just bought a used V30+ and it currently at android 7 Nougat (US99801c). Which firmware should I choose to upgrade ? Please help me

1) you already have US998. Or you say you do... Go into Download mode manually before opening Dev Patched LGUP.

Pie makes changes. People have found charging is slower, and many people complain Wi-Fi signal is weaker. Your mileage may vary. Yet you NEED stock LG Pie as a base to install/run the newer LOS-17 "Android 10" custom ROMs. For people who decide to go back to stock rooted firmware, perhaps with some Magisk mods -- instead of running full custom ROM -- they often make the decision to go back to last stable Oreo.
I have instructions in every Pie KDZ thread how to use Dev Patched LGUP to downgrade back to Oreo. The "Pie problem" you are referring to is many people then have to use permissive kernel for camera/flashlight to work when downgrading, since Pie made changes. Also some other sensors may not work.
If you are down converting back to Oreo because you don't like Pie the best way is to first downgrade to Nougat via Partition DL, then update back to Oreo. This seems to erase the stock Pie effect. Even better (for North American variants, EXCEPT for T-mobile H932!) first flash Canada H933 Nougat via Partition DL mode -- as it has different partition structure (like a sandblaster) -- then go back to US998 Nougat, then US998 Oreo.
For the H930 variants, you shouldn't cross flash to North American variants. Just Partition DL to Nougat H930 and then upgrade back to Oreo.

Thank you! My entire objective is to install Lineage along with Magisk to this phone. So when you say stock LG pie, do you mean any update/version of Pie that comes on the phone when I receive it? Or do I need to specifically have a certain version of Pie? Like if it's on an updated version pushed out OTA for this month vs last month for example. The phone I'm getting is a V30+ US998.

Right now, US998 has only had one Pie KDZ release.
When you get your US998 V30+ it will probably come with Nougat or Oreo and you will have to manually update it. Being totally honest, it will probably be an already-converted LS998 V30+ to US998 V30+. Nothing wrong with that, I've bought several -- my sister and two brothers-in-law use those... But on those, you will never get "OTA". You have to manually update, either via KDZ or TWRP-flashable zip.
If it already has Pie, you will still have to temporarily downgrade to early Oreo to unlock bootloader and root. Then you would update to more current firmware.

If you haven't read that Sticky Guide, please do.

Thank you. I was just making sure because I know when I used to root phones back then, security patches and such would sometimes render certain methods unusable. I read that thread but didn't see any mention (probably because it has no issues) of security patches messing with rooting? So that's all I'm making sure of.

Greets to both of you. I know the above quoted posts are several months old, but I'm kinda frustrated over finding reliable phone sellers on eBay and want to ask, can either of you tell me the name of the seller you were talking about here? I've had to return three phones because of various weirdnesses in phones received (ilke one in Danish and another in Chinese) and then it took way too long to get refunded. I could really use a good recommendation. I've got a list of several LG V30s for sale (and half of them are LS998) but hesitant to buy again because of the bad experiences. Message me if preferred, if you can help at all. TIA!

The name of the seller was yywireless. The phone was mostly fine except for a one scratch on the back, a few chips on the side, and the charging port looks like someone missed a lot. Yywireless seems to have raised the prices though.

Thanks! This seller has a loooong list of phones for sale and I don't know yet if he has what I want. If nothing else I'll catalog the name for future reference. The biggest thing is just knowing whether an eBay seller is reliable as to merchandise or not. As for prices, I would definitely pay more to a dependable/honest seller. Thanks again, especially for responding so quickly!

I bought several LS998 V30+ from him. Some were already converted to US998.
