I have one exchange account set to sync calendar and email. The Exchange process itself only uses around 7% of battery according to the battery graph. The 'awake' line under the graph has some solid areas accompanied by a corresponding steep drop on the battery curve.
Using GSam battery monitor to show which app had the most Time held awake shows Exchange over 5hrs.
I tried changing from Push email to every 10 minutes but it hasn't helped.
I also tried deleting the account, clearing cache and data from the exchange app and recreating the account.
Has anyone solved this issue?
I have not solved it but have the same problem. Galaxy S3. I need Exchange Sync, it finally got me to stop missing BlackBerry
Charging twice a day still stinks. Do other Android phones have this constant awake issue when running Exchange? Is the issue specific to ICS?
Hi, never experienced this on my S3, but did on my S1. A few things to try:
- Push can actually be more battery friendly
- Disable Calendar sync, if that cures it, try deleting all recurring appointments, starting with the oldest ones. Bad recurring appointments are known to send the sync process in a loop.
- Wrong login credentials keep the phone awake, even when sync is set to never!
I use Enhanced Email, in which security can be overided ( no server forcing a lock on the phone). I have read that security policies from the ecchange server can cause problems too.

Yep same problem here too, anyone?
I'll try turning off calendar sync. I turned off push but that made no difference, as you suspected. I use touchdown for email, task, and calendar and also use device exchange sync for calendar (the latter so Calendar Snooze will work with appointments). I can probably get by syncing calendar manually but not using is not an option since calendar is more important than calls and email for me.
Will report back with findings.

Hi techphets
Just wondering if you managed to fix this issue??
Ive also spent hours and hours trolling around trying to find a fix for this, but with no success any thoughts?? I have the galaxy s2 (not rooted, ics 4.0.3) so its definitely not just your S3, its more widespread. ICS? or the email app??
Cheers
i never use any stock apps especially when it connects to the networks and syncs so i just uninstall it to make sure that it doesn't consume battery life
Thanks. However when I log in to outlook online on my phone, the emails that appear are months old so it doesn't sync online. The only way to see new emails it to use the app (so I've found so far anyway)

Hey all,
I got the Tmobile version of the S6 Edge yesterday and the battery life seemed pretty decent as long as wifi was off - at least until I added my email accounts to my phone.
I've noticed that the Email Sync is taking up a ton of battery on my phone - according to the battery usage meter Email Sync is using 19% with the next highest being the screen at 3%! Its only been on for 5 hours and its already at 42%.
I did add a lot of accounts - 7 total all either exchange or microsoft live/outlook accounts and all setup to download a months worth of emails and push new emails as they arrive. However, with every other phone I've used this hasn't been an issue (two most recent were a Nexus 5 and an LG G3).
Is anyone else having abnormally high battery drain from Email Sync using the native email client? And if so, how did you go about fixing it?

I am having the exact same issue with only 3 accounts- looking for solutions...
This is the main issue I'm having. It was draining 5-10% an hour while not in use due to email sync. I have one email set up for that. I have it set to manual sync now and I'm only losing 1% an hour while not in use. I have the Volte option and Wifi options turned on (but not wifi itself) with no draining issues like other people.
I had the same drain. So I downloaded another email app and been using that instead.
Same issue here, abandoned it for another app, Waiting for a solution.
Did the same honestly - using mailwise right now but it isn't as full-featured as the native Samsung one. What is everyone else using?
Does the high email battery usuage cause Google Service battery drain for anyone else? I browse Reddit for about 30-50 mins each night before going to bed and it usually drops 10-15% but when I wake up, Screen is never on the top of battery usage. It's usually Google Services followed by email, and other stuff. VoLTE and Wifi scanning/calling is turned off for me and I leave location off until I need it so does anyone have any idea?

I have 3 accounts as well and email is draining my battery
Are you people talking bout the Gmail app also or just Email app? If you guys add those accounts to Gmail app does it do the same thing?
I am using the Gmail app for Gmail and the Samsung app for MSN and Exchange ActiveSync for work I have since removed the Samsung accounts and installed CloudMagic and I'm going to see how that works
I too have The same problem since yesterday. And I only use one account.. so a solution would be welcome.
Edit: I use the email app not the Gmail.

Last night I moved my exchange active sync account and my msn account to cloud magic, left my gmail account in the gmail app and deleted the accounts from the samsung mail app and after a little over 3 hours I still have 95% battery life. Very happy with these results so far.

Had the same problem I am on day 3 with my edge. Think I have found a solution, I have the stock app running with 4 mail accounts 3 gmail and one outlook. I have used the stock app because i like the interface. I also use Gmail with the same 4 mail accounts as when the push to my Moto 360 i can reply only using the Gmail app. I have also 1 gmail running in the inbox app.
The samsung app was using by far the most system resources and battery.
This is what i tried, mail pushes ok, and the email not showing in the battery use list.
Go into the email app then more top right. Go to settings, click on an account, scroll to sync schedule and press, set sync schedule to auto (when received) in top field. Turn off peak schedule green switch to disable. Back out and repeat with other accounts mail will now push to phone. if you want to sync a month or so back do that first until you have mail on device then follow the above steps. Seems to work fine. Without the above steps the mail app would eventually calm down after caching all previous mail. Gmail etc caches in the cloud whereas the samsung app needs to retrieve it.
me too
Just wanted to add that I also have ridiculous battery drain from emailsync. I have only one exchange email attached to the email app and it has kept my cell radio on almost constantly today. I just removed my exchange account and I'll report back if this changes my battery life. Turning mail to push instead of syncing did not appear to fix anything.
Sorry, can't post images because I'm "new" and have only been here 7 years or something.

Emailsync is the problem
Hi
Same problem here with emailsync killing my battery.
Tried the solution suggested, disabled Sync schedule and made sure
Sync was set to push (auto when recieved) and the results are the same.
Emailsync is using 60% battery consumption.
Need a resolution quickly, otherwise will take the phone back.
N
Same here. Ditched the stock email app and installed Type Mail(formerly Blue Mail) so will see how it goes.
Although the stock email app is ok, Type Mail is by far the best I've used. And I've tried them all!!
Hi all as far back as I can remember the email app always used a lot more battery than Gmail . For the last 6 years I have used Google to collect and emulate the other accounts.
On my galaxy s2 it meant the battery difference was between 6 hours use on email and over 12 hours using Gmail I am guessing it's not changed over the years.
set email sync to 2 hours
i have the same problem.
battery drains in 6-8 hours max and device becomes hot.
looking at the battery usage, the email sync service is keeping the device awake all the type.
it means it's never sleeping.
i'll try two things:
1- disable email sync push or auto service and set it scheduled (every 2 hours or any other parameter)
that seems working for the last 30 minutes. device is cool now and i only lost 1% even using whatsapp. will try it for longer period.
2- if this doesn't work, i'll move exchange active sync to the Gmail app. there is an app on apkmirror that allows you to do so or use a third party email service like cloud magic.
fingers crossed...
switched to Type Mail, so far so good right now.
update
switched to Typemail and battery is at 84% at 11:30am, huge difference. (ONE DRAWBACK - cant sync Exchange Calendar, when i do add my business email account, Emailsync still goes nuts even with emails disabled and calendar ON sync.)
Emailsync was killing it, at the end of most days, phone would be dead at 4pm. Im a heavy user of phone, sms, and email, 3 core features that shouldnt be draining the battery that much.
So until an update is out, STAY THE AWAY FROM NATIVE EMAIL APP. Its a battery killer, and you will not get your utilisation out of your Edge.
Anyone else find any other solutions to this issue with Emailsync???
N
So I too had syncing issues, sometimes it would take days to get an email even when I would manually refresh it. But I decided to go through and manually delete EVERY email in my gmail account, I went through and made copies of text and saved attachments through the last 7 years with google and just deleted. Everything. Sent, archieved, everything...and then hit the trashcan and deleted permanently...
What is interesting though is within MINUTES of completely wiping it all my gmail sync started working again. No joke.
I had my girlfriend send me a message, and she sent it and I recieved it while it still showed "sending" on her screen. I then went to craigslist and sent an email to myself through yahoo and got it instantly. I then emailed someone who had something I wanted and you know people never like to respond but they responded within a 2 minutes and I got it no problems.
So is this a sync conspiracy? My gmail seriously wouldn't sync but then does perfectly again just like it should.
If you have the time I recommend trying it. The whole process for me took about 30 minutes because I had to disconnect my yahoo from gmail and go back to seperate apps. But everything works great.
Let me know if this works for you!
Also, Dirty Unicorns, Franco 14e, latest PN gapps.
So I've got a kind of weird question for you, did you happen to enable the star wars theme for your Gmail account? The one that would change like everything in Google to something star wars related?
I don't think that's the case. Sometimes or receive emails instantly, other times, it syncs randomly. My email only has maybe about 8 emails that I didn't delete while the rest of it is clean.
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk
While what you're saying may be true, 1) The syncing problem seems to be random in regards to when it starts happening, I can install the app and have it work fine for a week or two and then it stops, and 2) Even if that DID fix the problem, it's not something I'd be willing to do.
It's pretty freaking embarrassing that Google email works totally fine on iOS devices and has big issues on Google devices.
I also have the syncing issue, sometimes it's fine, other times, no email until I manually refresh.
i feel like i've read somewhere before that this may be related to the battery optimization feature in 6.0 (doze mode), and if it's disabled for the gmail app then the syncing issues should go away. but i'm not 100%, maybe this will spark an idea from someone else as to what's causing that for you.
So no ones willing to take the leap and delete everything and try it? My gmail has been great for days...
Maybe your email was full that's why it wouldn't sync.
I faced the same sync problem when my Gmail got close to full. Once I made room, everything worked well. Since you deleted your emails that created more space, hence it started syncing.
I have to say that Inbox doesn't suffer the sync problem.

+1. The Inbox app has always synced fine for me. I switched to it last year after having intermittent sync issues with the Gmail app.
I added my gmail account to the Outlook app, that seems to be working fine, bit easier to get used to than Inbox too!
Does anyone else have an issue with Gmail notifications? Most of the time I receive no notifications about new email until I unlock the phone. Even then they do not always come in quickly. When I open the Gmail app they do come in.
Yes, they will "eventually" come in on their own but way later than they should. I have done every battery/data optimization/exception I can think of and find. This should NOT be happening in 2021! This is not a OnePlus phone and even then my 8T is not this bad. Also, the notification LED does not activate for Gmail while it does for Messages and WhatsApp. I have gone through every possible notification setting on the phone as well as for the Gmail app itself and made sure that using the LED was selected on them all. I hate that Gmail is installed as a system app! WHY???
Another interesting things is that Gmail is NOT listed as the default app. It is not even there as a selection. Messages is installed as a system app and it is listed as the default. WHY?
I am liking the phone, but not receiving notifications for such an essential feature as email is NOT GOOD!
The phone is causing Gmail to go into deep sleep when the screen is locked unnecessarily.
I may have found the solution. To start I went into Settings > accounts just to double check that the toggle for "Automatically sync app data" was turned on and it was. While in the same screen I tapped on my email account and then tapped on "Account sync", Here you can do a manual sync of all the various apps associated with your Google account. SO I tapped on the 3 dots in the top right and tapped on "Sync now" and the only thing that synced immediately was Contacts and maybe one other (can't remember which one. No matter how many times I would retry to do a manual sync the same thing would happen.
So I closed all of this out and went directly into the Gmail app > settings and chose my email account and scrolled down to "Sync Gmail" under the "Data usage" section and unchecked this setting. I rebooted the phone, went back into Gmail > settings my email and re-checked the "Sync Gmail" selection, rebooted again and went back into Settings > accounts > my email account > account sync and all the various apps listed in this section had now synced properly. I could tell by the time stamp for each one. I also did a manual sync again and everything in the list synced up within about 10 seconds! I was happy. I locked my phone, set it down, and within a minute or two I received several emails and the notification chime went off. I'm still not sure if the notification LED lit up or not but I think it did. Hopefully this fixes the issue.
Sometimes it isn't what is selected but the order in which you select things so as not to cause a conflict.
This is one area of Android that I think needs improvement (Samsung is the worst for this) that there are too many settings that seem redundant, counter intuitive, and conflict with one another.
Well, after writing all the previous entries I am still having the same issues with Gmail. On my OnePlus 8T every morning shortly after logging in my emails would come in without any prompting on my part. With my Xperia 1 iii I received NOTHING until I actually opened the Gmail app itself and sure enough there were about 5 emails that popped up! Something is very wrong here. I am not looking forward to a factory reset but I may have no choice. I will say this: If after a factory reset Gmail is still unresponsive I will definitely be sending this thing back!
Can confirm that there is something wrong with gmail. Just gmail. Ive tried 3rd party email apps and they work.
Totally understandable that you would prefer gmail over others. I too would actually prefer my gmail to work. I hope this is fixed in a firmware update.

Exactly! I decided to NOT do a factory reset because I feel that it would not help. Instead I just disabled Gmail and installed Bluemail. It has more settings than I care to mess with but at least all my email notifications arrive properly! I am glad that I am not the only one this is happening to. Is there some way to inform Sony directly that they have a problem? I liked it better when Gmail was a Play Store install! I DO NOT like it when ANY apps are installed as a service!
I chatted with Sony Tech support. They went through all the usual settings that I already tried several times. They escalated it so we will see what happens. One thing I have noticed, which may be relevant or not, is that with Blue Mail installed when I do get an email both Gmail and Blue Mail give a notification????
To me it sounds like you just need to whitelist the app in your battery saving settings.

Please, while I can appreciate the suggestion, do you think I did not already go through every possible setting and permutation in an attempt to resolve this issue? I am a retired IT Systems Engineer and I have used cell phones for so long it's not even funny. Not to mention there are others experiencing the exact same thing! However, I was forced to do a factory reset this morning so "maybe" things will start to work properly.
I have exact Gmail notification issue when I got my X1iii but the issue resolved after I upgraded to 61.0.A.11.92 this morning. After switched off Gmail sync off and on and turn on the notification on individual labels, the notification was back.
It might be the previous firmware used a bad GMSCore. My device is a XQ-BC62. BTW the install step 3 did take some time but my phone didn't stuck at that step and it went through.
I have different problem with gmail notifications. For some reason notifications are always coming when in the evening I plug in my phone for charging. After a moment gmail notifications are coming. And this happens all the time.
??? Sony?
Guys please treat everyone with respect.
We are here to help each other and exchange our experience. Not to offend each other.
Thank you.
I have had a few days now with the last update = .92 and so far it appears as if my Gmail notifications are coming in exactly as they should when the phone is locked. For sure much better than before the update. So whatever Sony did in this update (besides the security update) is working for me. The LED is also lighting up properly for Gmail! Good job Sony!
Gmail still does not sync automatically for me on the .92 update. Factory reset and it works for a bit but once after a while it stops. No amount of uninstalling GMS updates or clearing its data will get it working again, so I have no idea what happened.

Have to ask...you did give Gmail unlimited data? Also, you did set Gmail to "excepted" in battery settings?

Just to be sure, I went through and double checked that Gmail, Google Play Services, and Google Services Framework all had:
* Battery/Power-saving Feature: Excepted
* Unrestricted data: Enabled
Still didn't resolve my sync issues
Did you try this: settings > accounts > tap your email google account > account sync > has everything synced fairly recently? Any of them appear to be stuck, not spinning? Top right 3 dots sync now, does everything finish syncing?
Just adding that I noticed this problem after the .92 update. I'm not sure if its there before. So the .92 didn't solve the issue on my end, glad it solved yours.

I haven't had issues with gmail but I have had the kind of issues described in OP with other phone models and similar apps and the cause was a bit too eager battery optimization settings so I honestly thought it was the cause here too.

You make it sound like you think people are idiots because as already mentioned in the FIRST POST, he already excepted his apps from battery optimization. Testing out a potential fix which seems to be working for now.
I found out that my phone backup isn't working either. Manually pressing the button, the backup keeps telling it failed and asks me to try again later. Searching online, there are some that suggest to remove the screen lock to see if backup starts working again.
After I removed my screen lock, I cleared cache/storage of Google Play Services, Google Services Framework and Gmail. Then I rebooted my phone and left it a while to let it fully boot. I can now backup my phone, and I am getting my Gmail notifications. Now I am observing to see if this is permanent..
If the fix is permanent, at least on my end, it seems that Sony's build of android has buggy encryption. This was an issue with other brands too.
Update on my problem. Firstly, after trying the above, I noticed a few days later that in general I wasn't getting notifications from anything. I concluded that I messed up Google Services too much and therefore factory reset my phone.
After that and readding my google account, My notifications was fixed, except Gmail still wasn't getting notifications, but phone backup started working. I was about to give up and use another email app, when today the September security update arrived in 61.0.A.14.3 update. Being desperate to try anything I updated without hesitation.
This seems to fix the problem and I am getting my gmail notifications.
Not getting my hopes up too much and just continue monitoring but I hope this the end of my google problems.
Have been using Outlook in my work profile with no issues on a Pixel 6 for the past 2 years. Switched to a S23U a few days ago and am periodically unable to see my Outlook calendar. S23U just displays a blank calendar with no events and claims that all available calendars are hidden. Force quitting Outlook and restarting it immediately resolves the issue. Anyone else seen that?
I am 100% stock ATT firmware. The only slightly unusual thing I do is that I also install Outlook in my personal profile which allows my Garmin Fenix 7 watch to catch notifications from Outlook. The Outlook in the personal profile is completely unconfirmed, but it does seem to see notifications from the work profile and allows the Fenix to catch and display them. Had the same setup on the Pixel 6 and it worked without any issues.
No issues on mine. Outlook for work in secure folder and personal outlook in my standard profile all working as expected.

Have not, I try to not deal with first level tech support when I can avoid it. I don't need to be told to reboot the phone and clean cache 5x despite me telling them that I have already tried that
I use Outlook for my work account and I have not had any issues with the calendar (I live and die by my calendar). Both in the app and the app widget are working perfectly fine for me.
Go into the app and go to settings, account, reset account and your calendar sync issue should then be sorted.
This method shouldn't wipe your account, so no need to start messing trying to set it all back up again.

I think there is a bug with the Samsung Calendar app (including Calendar storage).
Although my case is different from yours, this is what my problem is:
I use Your Calendar Widget on my Homescreen instead of Google Calendar Widget. If I edit a calendar entry, such as changing the event date, the event disappears from this 3rd party widget, although the Google Calendar Widget shows the event in the right place after the edit.
I use the same setup on my OnePlus phone and I don't have this problem there, so a problem with the 3rd party app can be ruled out.
