I had a bunch of images downloaded from various sources.. I stored them all in a folder called myimgs or something like that on internal storage. It really annoyed me that they showed up in Gallery. I moved them to my external storage and that solved the issue.
However, I downloaded a bunch of music videos so I don't have to use data. I stored them on my external memory card, but they all show up in my Gallery. 400+ videos. Any way to not have that happen? Not that I have anything to hide, it's annoying to scroll through that many thumbnails.

I believe you can just make a file named
".nomedia" (without quotes) in each folder you don't want scanned.
Then open gallery app info and clear the app's cache....
Sent from my God Mode 8
Or use Samsung Secure folder to hide your videos from Gallery and only you can view it
The problem with using .nomedia is that the video players (at least the built-in one) won't recognize the videos as media, either.

So I have been having duplicate song issues. It seemed to happen when I moved around my files. My music player list will show like 2 or 3 albums, but only one will play. The other one or two entire albums will give an error saying 'This file does not exist.' I see that 'Media scanner running' info on the status bar but it never fixes this issue. Anyone else have this problem or a fix?
If it matters this has happened both on internal and external memory.
Thanks.
Nope, never had this problem. Try to remove all music files and see if the player shows anything. If not, then add the ones that were showing duplicates and see if it happens again.
I am having the same issue but i normally use double twist
Delete your cache in Settings, Applications, Manage Applications, Music.
Also, delete the /sdcard/albumthumbs folder.
Reboot and it should rebuild your song list.
I had tried deleting cache before but didn't see it. I didn't realize there were multiple sorting options on this phone, whoops. The 'delete cache' was dark and would not let me click it, but I tried deleting data and the albumthumbs but it still didn't work. I am just going to try erasing it all and re-adding the music and not moving it around again... Thanks for the help though!
Did you find your fix? I had to leave everything out of a folder on the sdcard to stop this annoyance.
I hope this helps
If you are rooted I would recomend purchasing the full version of the app "SD Maid" from the market.
I had an issue from doubletwist that was resulting in duplicate music files.
I'm pretty sure that the reason it happens is; when we are syncing music (possibly alot at once) most programs recognize the 16g internal storage as possibly a indipendent device. This could be because of the potential to swap out your sd card to share music but on second though probably not.
its probably just a random error.
If you are unrooted or otherwise unable to use sd maid (id recomend rooting and flashing a custom rom but if thats not what you want to do then get the free astro file manager from the market and you should see in your home directory a file called music or it could within another file titled media. Regardless where you want it to be is on your external sd card.
you can delete the directory titled music but first check the file titled external media.
You should see all of your music there as well.
I have played with the settings on doubletwist as well as spotify and this is the best solution.
(If you use sd maid then go into duplicates and very very very patiently select all of the boxes it lets you and then just hit the delete duplicates up top)
Is it possible to view the photos as slide show, I don't seem to find such function in the tablet Gallery or File Manager and Mobo Player.

The tablet's stock Gallery has a slideshow function. Open Gallery, select a set of photos, then locate in the right-hand section of the upper menu and touch the icon that looks like a square with a right-pointing triangle; the slideshow will begin. You can adjust the slideshow's settings by touching the right-most icon in the upper menu. Good luck.

Thanks, got that but I want a slide show of pictures stored in a sd card and I don't want to transfer the file to the tablet so I am now viewing therm with file manager or Astro and they don't seem to have slide show capability. Any apps can do it?

I don't understand why Gallery is not detecting and listing the media files stored on your external SD card. I have photos and videos stored on an external SD card and Gallery detects and lists them without problem. Check for a file named ".nomedia" in the folders where you have the photos stored. If ".nomedia" exists, delete it.

The only other app I use to view photos is the ES Image Browser that is included with ES File Explorer. ES Image Browser is accessed by selecting a photo from within ES File Explorer. ES Image Browers has a slideshow function.

If they're running unrooted Honeycomb the stock apps need files transferred from the SD card and can;t access them directly. I'm told ICS fixes this. Patiently awaiting it here in the UK

I can access the pictures from File Manager without transfering them but no slide show
Install QuickPic from the Play Store and start using it instead of Gallery. It can access the external SD perfectly, HC or ICS. And it's slideshow function works on either and is very configurable.
Worked for me, at least.

Got it and it works perfectly. Thanks a lot.
I am new to Samsung, coming from HTC Desire. And got into bizarre already )
A couple of days ago noticed a strange problem with photos in galery unreadable, appearing to be corrupt (all of them on external sd, internal sd photos are displayed properly). Then today happened that Music app couldn't play music files on external SD.
Read countless of similar issues on the internet, with lots of people blaming on the sd card. However, I found that it is not the case.
Put into a SD card reader and plug into PC, the files on SD card are all ok.
Put back card into phone and investigated further. First I thought maybe it's a problem with SD card reader in the phone. BUT! Noticed files are perfectly visible in ES File Explorer, and even display correctly when using Gallery App to open them from ES file explorer. But if Gallery is opened first, it cannot display files.
I'm sure somebody else happened the same, since the internet is full with such reports regarding Galaxy devices (even S1 and Note alike), but anyone identified the sorce of the problem and eventually solved it? I would be very much interested.

Try to run Rescan Media app from Play store.
Maybe your media scanner service does not work properly and needs to refresh the list of media files on your sd card.
Good luck !
rescan is done automatically every reboot. doesn't help. thanx anyway.
investigated further and found out that the files are not corrupt, but the libraries of Music app and Gallery app created duplicated empty files (in fact 2 fake entries in library for every valid file on the card). Duplicate files don't exist physically on SD card, only in libraries of the two applications.
Already tried formatting cache and dalvik cache, but to no avail...
ICS 4.0.4 Orange Romania (BVLPH) stock ROM.
Later EDIT: This was an easy one. Unmounted SD Card and open Gallery app and Music app. Then re-mount SD Card, both apps will refresh libraries, wait a while for media scan in the background and voila: duplicate files disappear, everything is in god order.
I had a similar problem where both gallery and music files were duplicated, but the duplicates were unreadable.
My solution was Settings -> Applications -> All -> Media Storage -> Clear Data.
This forced a refresh and everything turned normal again.
Slightly annoying that the media scan data is stored under a separate application and not within the data of the gallery or music player applications, but once I discovered this it was an easy fix.
My default Gallery app is not working properly. It is not seeing other folders. It only see Camera folder from the last few days. There are no Whatsapp Folder where I can see any photos, etc
I have put it in "Albums" mode.
I have gone to the app setting and clear the cache on this app. Do force stop. Go and check and its still the same. I dont have a SD card.
If using other picture app, I can see more photos. But not with Gallery app anymore.
Any ideas what had gone wrong?
Thanks.
I wonder if SD Maid mess this thing up?
The other folders are not indexed by the media contentprovider. You need to trigger a rescan, e.g. in SD Maids Explorer select a folder and select "Force mediascan".
Sometimes rebooting, or replugging a usb or sdcard also helps.
I just solved my problems and I am MAD! I plug my phone into my PC and do this below:
I just removed the file '.nomedia' from android root directory. All my files are back again on gallery apps.
I am pretty sure that this file was created after installing google photos. (This is not my comment but maybe helpful to some?)
Very peculiar issue occurring: there are a fair amount of photos and videos that show up under google photos under library -> photos on device -> camera with SDCard Icon.
But the location for these files is "/external/video/media" or "/external/image/media" under ""On Device (size)." The other files taken in a similar way are correctly on "/storage/9C32-13OC/DCIM/Camera"
When clicking these files, they play normally, clicking share and More or Create Link says "Error, could not download media" and using Google Photos to Move / Copy says "Trouble Moving 1 item"
When ejecting the SDCard and physically removing it while keeping Google Photos open, all the files actually on /storage/<ID> disappear, and all these weird files remain and can be played. This is how I discovered it wasn't just today's videos, which were mysteriously not being uploaded to my nextcloud. No other app can see these videos/images, including the system's gallery app, and they are not in the internal emulated "SDcard"
These are on my SO's phone and I use the exact same model phone. I did discover that I do have some files like these but hey are all older than the oldest file on my SDCard, e.g. Google Photos has somehow decided to cache them. But on my SO's phone, these files are intermingled with the ones she's actually taken
Interestingly when I switch the google photos account to another google user logged on the phone, those files disappear. I did try moving files to the locked folder but it says "Trouble moving to Locked Folder. Try again later"— I did verify I could move files actually on the SDCard there, and they are then removed from all views except Locked Folder.
In this folder, on the top right when clicking the SDCard Icon, it does show the "SD Card folder" as "file:///storage/9C32-13OC/DCIM/Camera" as expected.
I searched for the filename in a file browser as well as in adb shell (using find / -name "filename" 2> /dev/null) and nothing comes up. As there are some lengthy videos in here, I used DiskUsage to see what might be using a lot of space, and the Google Photos app is using 7.55 GB of data, so it seems like they are being stored there. And it makes sense why they can't be found, as /data/data/com.google.android.apps.photos is only accessible by that app or the system, and I'm unrooted.
My SO said she took them the same way she normally takes photos and video, and of course when I take some they show up on the actual SDCard. I suppose in theory I could use adb backup and follow instructions on how to decrypt the data files, but really what the heck is going on?
We aren't on the latest phone or even the latest Google Photos app (could be a bug with this specific version, but then again google photos isn't taking the photos/videos, the system Camera app is). I could try upgrading her google photos but I also don't want to lose these videos of our kid. It does seem like it would back them up, but we don't have enough Google Storage to back them up online (hence why we use nextcloud), and they don't even show up under different google accounts as mentioned.

Well this didn't work, as google photos does not back up with adb, as some apps can specify this.
Some of these videos did get uploaded to google photos, but they are (now) compressed to under 1/8th their size (the original size is noted correctly in google photos), and from 4k to HD.
From what I had recalled, when they are first uploaded, they are available at their original size to be downloaded. So I tried deleting one to get it to re-upload, and now that video no longer shows up on my SDCard under "/external/video/media" so I basically lost the original HQ video of my kid, great.
Any ideas?
