Hello all, I have the xv6800, dcd rom 3.3.4 and activesync and internet sharing setup on Windows just fine. However, I have recently gotten a MAC, and I have not been able to get the internet sharing to work via BT or USB. I can understand BT cause I was never able to get it set up on windows either. I don't mind the USB connection, it's alwasy been more stable and a snap to set up with the ROM. However I can't get it working on the MAC. Is there a driver or app that needs to be installed on the mac side? The only think I remember doing on the WIN side is installing the modem driver.
On Mac, I have installed Missing Sync installed and I have been able to attach and sync my winmo phone without issue, so I know I have connection. but I cannot get the internet sharing to work. I checked out the verizon site and they state that they do not make a modem driver for the mac os.
I should also mention that I have winXP set up on the mac thru VMware, but I have been unsuccessful getting this to work the way my original windows laptop is setup. I dont want to set it up that way anyway if I can avoid it.
I am curious if anyone has this working via USB?? I apologize if this has been covered elsewhere. I couldn't find anything related and certainly not specific to this ROM.
I did find this, http://www.keithtastic.com/post/3997...-to-sprint-htc, but it states to buy an app called USB Modem program from www.mobile-stream.com. but wouldnt the ISC app on the dcd rom provid the same functionality?
Thanks for any/all help

then just use internet sharing form the phone as normal?
no offense but that didnt help at all. I can connect my phone via BT themac sees it, but all I can do is browse device. I need to set up a connection with my phone to the mac and get online via my phone. I dont careif its bluetooth or not. I have the new macbook btw, if it matters
goon55: Like you, I always used a VM workaround to tether back when I had a Mac. I haven't tried this, but I've heard Syncmate allows Internet Sharing on Mac systems. Good luck!
I have no issues connecting my macbook for my 6800.
After you set it up like the other poster told you to, you should have a phone icon next to the bluetooth icon at the top right of the screen. click the phone icon then "connect bluetooth".

also when setting up the BT relationship, make sure you select the network services (i believe, there are one or two services you can check)...on the phone make sure you start BT and internet sharing (with BT selected) and when you go to the BT menu on the mac, your phone name should be under "devices", expand your phone name and select connect to network.
just trying to clarify a bit.
i had it
i had bt working for a bit and then was disconnected abruptly.
after deleting the profiles of the pairings on both the titan and the mac, it still wont share the connection although the phone will be connected in bt system prefrence pane, (where you select devices).
when it worked, i would select the phone in the device select, and underneath clicking on the gear to a menu option to 'connect to network'
it worked that wayfor 3 mins.
also, when i configure the device, if i set the phone to internet share while the mac is discovering the services, i get two options to select instead of just one:
access the internet
use device as network port.
edit: got it, apple talk active
best software you can use is http://www.wmwifirouter.com/ it works over BT or wifi and uses your phone's regular data access address which means you don't get tethering charges. NOTE I use the free version, and I have tried the tiral and although it does work, my mogul does not seem to like it and has little quirks after I install it (wifi turns on when I reset even if the switch is off, I don't why but its there).
Hi everyone, I've been trying to use my Windows Mobile phone as a modem for the Macbook, but so far I only see people being able to connect via BT. Problem with that for me is that BT drains both my laptop and phone battery quicker, so I'm trying to find a solution to connect via USB instead. Has anyone been able to surf on their Mac using their Windows Mobile phone as a modem via USB cable?
What you want is Mobile Stream USB Modem for Windows. Windows here being Windows Mobile, it works with my Mac.
Once you set it up, your phone is seen as a USB Modem and you dial from the Mac to this port. There is a free trial, take time to test it, read the forums, I had some initial issues to get it work right, but now it is good, I ended up purchasing it.
Tried BT sharing too, but too instable and drops. Tried the WiFi sharing, but eats battery...
Only downside: as you dial the data modem, it will fail if it is already in use (background email checking on your phone...). I have to disconnect the data connection on the phone to be able to dial from the Mac, otherwise it reports Port Busy.
Thanks for the recommendation, will try it out. Any other solutions in the meantime to connect and share the Internet connection from my Windows Mobile phone to Mac via USB?
I had the same problem, and tried everything recommended in the thread - no dice. I ended up just installing WMWifiRouter and that works like a champ.

This is for cingular, but I'm sure this can be attempted no matter what the provider.
I've been looking for a solution as well, and have yet to find one for USB Internet Sharing on a Mac. I currently just use Bluetooth with an external charger on the phone and laptop since it'll eat the battery of both quickly.
Fast questin:
A friend has a HTC Touch HD whick he can use as a mobile internet connection for his computer using the 3G in the phone and a USB cable.
Is the possible with the Hero?
If not, would it be possible to make a app for that? I mean, the whole phone is opensource, so it should be possible?
It's called tethering - it's built into Hero, though I believe you have to use HTC Sync on your PC.
Regards,
Dave
To sync it to PC, do i need any software or is it plug and play?
Never acculy synced my hero to my PC since i rl dont need to when i have andorid marketplace
Do i need any software on my computer to sync the Hero?
*woops, doubble post >.<*
Yes hero can be used as a modem, you need to instal HTC Synch on the pc first, then plug phone in and drivers will be installed via htc synch. I find after doing it on a few boxes you need to reboot the pc before the phone will give an IP address to pc at this initial instal. In settings/wireless controls on hero you need to tick mobile network sharing - this becomes available to tick when plugged to pc. Note there is a newer version of HTC Synch on the HTC web site than the one supplied on the hero's memory card - both worked for me.
To Synch - yes you need HTC Synch installed.
If you are using MoDaCo's custom rom you can use an app called Wireless Tether which lets you tether through wifi/bluetooth,so no need for a usb cable.
Wow, thanks for all the answears
cool, tethering over bluetooth
anyone tried this on linux? I start like feeling to flash that rom after all. HTC's ten days take soooo long...

I just wanted to ask the same question. i'm a linux user and wanted to share internet with my laptop.
it was hard to get it working with WM (i never got it working)
If you install the Android SDK you get a tool called "adb" which has this in its -help output:
Code:
networking:
adb ppp <tty> [parameters] - Run PPP over USB.
Note: you should not automatically start a PDP connection.
<tty> refers to the tty for PPP stream. Eg. dev:/dev/omap_csmi_tty1
[parameters] - Eg. defaultroute debug dump local notty usepeerdns
So it might be possible, but I don't know how exactly.
I did thetering over bluetooth and infrared with my touch dual wm device and ubuntu laptop. Worked very nice. I know it is easy over usb, but given the bluetooth support in Android, i doubt it will work over bt.
Hmm, iv'e installed HTC Sync (the version that is on HTC.com/support) but when i try to sync the phone to my laptop my phone says it didnt fint HTC Sync on windows... even though its insalled and opened on my computer...
What to do?

HTC Sync does not allow you to use the Hero as a modem. HTC Sync is used to sync Contacts to Outlook or Windows Address Book! I got this information from the HTC Sync user guide downloaded from the HTC website.
To use the Hero as a modem, you must use PDANet or root your phone and use some other tethering application.
So then there is no way I can use my Hero as a modem?
Since I dont want to root my phone and PDANet is not free(I live in sweden and can not buy apps yet)
Please see this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=544352. Apparently it works with HTC Sync on Windows and it works with the standard rndis driver on Linux.
The Windows/HTCSync method is also mentioned in the manual that came on the /sdcard of my G2 Touch (chapter 6.7, "Verwendung des Telefons als Modem" (i.e. tethering)). See also the screenshots on http://blog.brightpointuk.co.uk/using-htc-hero-usb-modem.

Wrong I'm afraid! Hero has tethering out of the box and *does* use HTC Sync, albeit just to install NDIS driver. (see http://www.htc.com/uk/faqs.aspx?p_id=283&cat=0&id=108516&f=t )
There is no requirement to install any other tethering app, or root your phone, though you will need to do this if you wish to tether via WiFi or Bluetooth.

Dave

did anyone actually succeed in this?
HI,
I still have not been able to tether between my ubuntu laptop and my rooted hero without a cable. I have tried using bluetooth with wifitether and with wifi ad-hoc network, but none work.
Is it even possible to pair a hero with ubuntu?
The questions are:
1. Can I access webtop on my laptop if I connect to the phone via usb or bluetooth?
2. Can I tether my computer to the phone via the bluetooth or usb cable?
This might seems redundant but I dont seem to find the answer to this. Can you access webtop via a laptop when you connect the phone with an usb cable? The reason I ask is because sometimes I would like to browse the net while Im at work and that would be the easiest way to actually do using the laptop screen and a external mouse/keyboard. I dont really want to just buy a monitor to take to the office.
Also, is my understanding that the atrix also works like a hotspot that will provide wifi access via the phone data connection. While that is great for most of the times that will not work when I am working with a virtual computer and I dont want to share the main pc connection. With my blackberry I just use the usb connection to tether the virtual pc and that way whatever internet use I do on the virtual computer does not flow via the corporate network.

1.) Maybe the "Motorola Phone Portal" app that came on the phone would work for what you want?.
2.) yes and yes. For wifi or bt use the "Wifi Tether" app, formerly "Wireless Tether". For USB use the "Wired Tether" app. You can find both with a quick google search, not in the market.
It dont seems that the motorola phone portal will do what I want which is using the laptop to browse the phone browser. I hate to tether specially since it seems AT&T is cracking on that but it seems is the only way to use my phone to browse the net on a larger screen. Eihter that or buying another monitor....
If you use the above apps you will not get caught tethering, I speak from experience. It's the custom APNs that are likely to get you in trouble.
I need a way to transfer large files, 700mb+, from my hox+ to my Iconia. Problem is I'm on cellular data, so something like Wi-Fi file transfer would be out of the question. I tried using Bluetooth file transfer, but it takes ages, and always fails anyway. My hox+ is rooted but the Iconia isn't, and it's running android 3.2 if that's at all relevant. thanks in advance ladies/gents.
Do you have a computer.
I have a two, but this phone is completely incapable of connecting to either via usb. neither computer even acknowledges my phone is connected to it.

I have had issues with this coming from a HTC Desire and found the only way to get my PC to see the phone correctly is to turn on USB Debugging on and the moment I connect the phone to the PC I have to unlock the screen otherwise all I get is a blank window. (Once the drivers have installed)
Do you have drivers installed?
I've installed every driver I can find pertaining to mtp, htc, android, etc. I honestly think maybe there's something wrong with the phone, but then again when I "install hardware" on Vista and install all the drivers that way,I still get a code 10 (cannot connect).
What about ADB? If so you can transfer to computer with it.
my phone will not connect via usb, to transfer files I use web sharing. but that isn't feasible to transfer from phone to tablet, unless I'm on Wi-Fi. I need a way to do it when I'm away from home and on cellular data.
Are you using windows XP? If so, you must install windows media player 11 / 12 so that your pc will recognize your phone as a usb mass storage device and download and install the latest HTC Sync Manager, just google it.
Hope it helps.
Best regards.

Well i finally figured out why my phone wouldn't connect via usb, because the phone itself was BROKEN! Got a new one under warranty and everything is working perfect! Thanks for all the help guys! Its time to get rooting, again!
Hoy can use Airdroid from the play store

thanks for the advice, but airdroid uses data. it's handy if you're on Wi-Fi though.
Is there anyway to have a Windows 7+ computer recognize when you have your phone connected to the same wireless network so it will launch an Application or do a task such as play a song on the windows machine? I assume it would be the same for any Android Phone. I'm not against installing a program on the computer and an App on the phone. The only thing like this that I could see was a wake on LAN App that turned on the computer, but what if the computer was already on and you just wanted it to run a task? Does that make sense? Let me know if you have any additional questions.
Try this:

That is a good idea although I was looking for WiFi or bluetooth and not via USB they were looking for when they walk in the door. I think they found the answer through some script online.
