i9100 weak signal : normal or faulty motherboard? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, i have a gt-i9100 and i noticed it has weak 2g/3g signal ,even compared to other old phones. In the same spot and with the same sim card ,only the i9100 is not able to receive phone calls and i also tried different usb flat port and different antenna cables and i tried also the only cmda 3g mode.
Are all the i9100 like this or mine is faulty ? Could i solve this if i buy another motherboard, even a chinese one? Thanks

check the modem you have and perhaps change it

I use Modem-XXMS4.zip for Europe. here are some list of codes of modem

Thank you , i tried many different modems and many stock rom versions with ms2 , ms3 ,ms4 etc ,but in some places where the signal is weaker the s2 is always the only phone which is not able to receive calls, even if phone status info shows 10 asu and the icon has 2 bars. When the signal is a little stronger it works .
Did you never notice this problem compared to other phones?
I could buy another motherboard but i don't want to end up with the same problem if all the i9100 has this level of reception.....

If you have changed the USB board in the phone, then that is probably your problem. It likely has NOTHING to do with the modem.
There are several variants of the USB board and you *HAVE* to replace the board with the same variant you removed, otherwise loss of signal can occur...
I wrote a guide on this very subject.
It will help.

[Q][HELP] Signal problem on my S2

Hi all, I am having a problem with signal strenght on my i9100. When the phone is on a table the signal is about 3 lines, at 70% of strenght but when i hold it in my hand it looses reception and it says only emergency calls, I've tried everything, changing the software, official/custom, tried different SIM card, trying 3G/GSM, nothing, I've even changed the antenna, same problem again, how can it be solved? Can it be a problem in motherboard or?
The problem is just like on example video.
Please help!

My phone is locked on to VIP Croatia network, I've unlocked my phone using paid GalaxSim unlock on T-Mobile Croatia, the signal was weak just like on VIP network, then i flashed I9100XWLSD_I9100CROLSB_CRO which is for T-Mobile Croatia and signal was also weak, then i flashed I9100XWLSD_I9100VIPLSC_VIP for VIP network and signal is also weak, I tried both, VIP and T-Mobile SIM cards, on both of them is signal weak.
Could you please recommend me a modem, because I'm new to S2 and don't know which modem will be good.
Tnx in advance!

Or just search for veyka modem list as theres loads there.
None of that helped, I'll try to change the RT module, the one with micro usb, maybe is something on it making problem, i have a spare from other i9100 on wich is microusb not working but antena works so I'll try with that and report.

[Q] Replaced USB Flex + Antenna, now No Signal?

Afternoon, XDA people.
I recently repaired my brother's S II after he broke the USB port by dropping it while plugged in. I ordered a new flex and antenna (because I broke the old antenna) and after installing all the new stuff, it gets awful to no signal. He's on Straight Talk (ATT) and usually gets 3-4 bars where we are, but now the cell rating doesn't go above 111 dBm, 1 asu. I've tested his SIM in my S II and it works fine. APNs are the same. I also updated the modem to the most recent one for ICS AOSP (he's running CM9), factory reset, all that fun stuff.
Could it be that the board has more to do with signal other than having the mic, USB, and antenna connection on it? Should I order another board and see if I had a faulty one? Should I throw it in a blender and see if it blends? Whatever insights you all might have would really help me out, because he has to have a working phone to make sure he'll have work throughout the week, and I don't want to give him a phone that isn't reliable.

You should do something like this and also nake sure that part numbers you installed match to one you replace. ...look one more time to connection
Also run service mode something like this
Success is never final
Failure is fatal
Fixed it

Wow, I totally forgot I posted this. Thanks for the response, samprocat. Turns out that the board I got was for the international edition, not the i777. Got a board for the i777 and it worked on boot, no issues. Tested for 4 months and going strong.

[Q] I Need Help , Lost Signal

Hi !! i have a problem, I bought a second note everything was fine but when I got to buildings or basements even in mu fourth network signal was rather weak horn that had no bar .... look out there changing the modem might fix and change and now only in airplane mode stays and never leaves there who help me?
What country are you in? You might just be in a poor reception area.
But . . . You can experiment with flashing different modems. You have to first flash a custom recovery -- I prefer TWRP. Once that's done you can flash your modems.
Another possibility is that the phone has a bad antenna. Some shipped from the factory that way. Is there a Samsung shop near you?

[Q] Data speed problem

Hello All,
I am hoping that someone can help me out.
I purchased 6 Samsung Galaxy S3 unlocked phones. I put SIM chips in each, all from the same provider and all with the same service plan. 3 of the phones everything is working great including fast Internet. The other 3 phones have extremely slow Internet. I did a bit of research and noticed that the phones that are slow display EDGE in Mobile network type. The phones that are fast display HSDPA:9 . Could this difference be the cause of the data speed problem? Can anything be done to fix it?
My apologizes if this is being posted in the wrong forum.
Thanks

In your way, EDGE means slow, HSDPA fast, HSDPA offers speeds up to 21mbps (if your carrier supports it) and EDGE up to 0.5 mbps or so.
Now, if your 3 other phones don't connect to HSDPA (3G) then it's disabled in settings or signal is low or the chip is messed up.
So by checking if everything is good go to settings, under first tab (connections) go to More networks > Mobile networks and make sure that under network mode WCDMA/GSM is checked, notice that WCDMA is HSDPA.
If still not getting faster speeds try to check if WCDMA only option works, if not, eh, bad chip.

Thanks for the reply.
I activated the WCDMA/GSM. As soon as I did the icon status(?)displayed on the top of the phone turned to a circle with a line through it. About 3 minutes later the status changed to an E with bars next to it. The Status/Mobile network type still says EDGE.
When I try to connect to a site it is slow. Does this mean the device is still getting the 2G signal? Could all 3 phones have a bad chip?
Thanks.
that is true

Do all of the phones have the same baseband? Check in settings, about.
Just to make sure the modem is the same.
I just check 2 of the phones (they are all not with me now)
The baseband of one of the good (fast) ones is: I747UCDMG2
and on one of the slow data phones is: I747MVLUEMK5
What does this mean, that they are not the same?

Both are i747 version which is not international version, maybe Korean or something like that, try using only WCDMA this is constant 3G, and see if it works, if not, flash the latest software from sam mobile via Odin, but watch out you download for i747, not i9300 etc. There are many S3 variants.
I tried using only WCDMA with no success.
Do you have instructions of how to locate and flash the latest software? Also I know the phone is currently unlocked would this change that?
Thanks so much.

If it is unlocked, it shouldn't change that.
And note if changing software doesn't help then the chip might be damaged.
For software, go to www.sammobile.com and register, then go to browse firmware and select android/galaxy s3 bla bla.. until you get to country, there select your country, or go to top and select 'top 10 latest' and choose one that is different from yours.
You can know of it is different by the baseband name letters for etc 'XXUGNG3'.
Then download the software you want (it may take a while) and download Odin v3.09 (just type that in google you'll fond ot) and Samsung USB Drivers (also found on google easily).
Install usb drivers, reboot, open Odin, extract downloaded firmware, go to odin and select AP and then navigate to extracted zip and select you software.
Then put your phone in download mode: hold vol down+power+home and then vol up for continue when you see the picture, connect your phone and flash.
Also, please, about that, read here on xda and see tutorials on youtube, this has been answered multiple time and.i am one of rare users that will thoroughly help in answered questions.
I followed the instructions and flashed the phone. It did not help.
Any other ideas? One of the phones we got was brand new! I can't imagine there is a faulty chip in 3 out of 6 phones?
I am frustrated.

Are they unlocked? Of they are try another carrier, or try somewhere where the signal is at it's best reception.
If these simple methods don't work just get it analyzed in the service center, i doubt it can be software problem because you tried with another rom, also, when you'll try maybe changing carrier or going around town to see if it works, and it doesn't, then it is hardware problem, unfortunately.
Thank for all your help.
Nothing seemed to work.
I did try another carrier and it did not work.
I just can't imagine that 3 out of 6 phones have the same problem and 1 of them is new.
Could it be that the 3/4 G only works in the USA and not in foreign countries?

Help with radio/modem flash for weak signal - Elephone P3000S

Hi All,
I'm new here. Hoping someone can give me some advice/direction on my issue.
Just received two Elephone P3000S phones (one for me, one for gift). I'm in Canada on Koodo network, but don't get 4G because we are pretty rural (west of Ottawa), so we are using WCDMA/HSPA+ 850/1900 MHz.
The P3000S supports the following:
GSM:850/900/1800/1900, WCDMA:850/900/1900/2100(HSDPA), FDD-LTE:800/1800/2100/2600
At home, on our old phones (Samsung Galaxy SIIX), we would get cell signals of -93 dBm or better (not great, but usable). With the P3000S phones in the same location (both of them), the signal is -110 dBm or worse (not usable - not able to make calls or send texts). There are no protective cases on the phones to interfere with signal.
I've tried the the following:
- choosing 3G only and WCDMA only networks and editng APN settings specifically for Koodo
- changing/adding build.prop entries for ro.ril
- posting in Elephone forums - no help
- contacting Elephone - no response
The P3000S is new - just came available mid-December. Elephone has issued one update since then. It did not help my signal problem.
I know this could be a hardware/antenna issue, but since the phone is new, opening it up to tweak/boost the antenna is not really an option - a last resort if I can't sell the phones to someone who is located where they will work.
So, my next step (I think), is to try flashing a new modem, but I have no idea where to start with that to find one that might be compatible with Koodo and the P3000S. I'm willing to try several, but it's very new to me.
Relevant info:
Octacore MTK6592 + MTK6290
Android version: 4.4.2
Baseband: MOLY.LR9.W1423.MD.LWTG.MP.V3.P3
I'd really appreciate any advice.
Thanks in advance.
Anyone have any ideas where I might start?

Hello, i bought same phone and seems signal is ok. But i am probably not so far from BTS.
It seems your phones has worse antena then phone before, you can not solve this by software (ril mod, baseband etc.). You have to try to solve it by hardware mod, probably extend antena to get higher gain. Under and around NFC antena on back cover is enought space tu use copper foil strips, you can try make unclosed frame with connection on main antena.
Hi MioCZ,
Thanks for your thoughts. So you don't think a different region (i.e. North America) baseband/modem would help at all? The hardware tweak is my last resort - I'm not particularly fond of opening up a new device. And I don't exactly know what to look for as far as NFC antenna or main antenna. Any idea where these are located on this phone?
Again - thanks for your insight.
EDIT: Oh, I see you reference the antenna on the back cover as the NFC antenna. I can try to work with something there without opening up the phone? Or do I need to make a mod to connect the new copper to the main antenna from there? So I guess I need to know where the main antenna is. Is the 4G/LTE antenna the same one used for 3G/WCDMA/UMTS/HSPA? I'm not sure if there are separate ones. If so, the 4G/LTE antenna location is pretty clearly marked.
EDIT AGAIN: I answered my own question by reading up on cell phone antennas. Gotta love Google. So, I'm going to try to rig something up to the main antenna, which I assume is under the section marked "LTE 4G" in the upper right hand corner (when looking at the back of the phone). I'll post my results when I finish.
Engineering mode
You can call *#*#3646633#*# to enter to Engineering mode. It should have antenna test somewhere in menus.

Hi, have you solved the issues on your phone?
I believe this is the same problem that I am facing with coloros. In fact he does not write the correct base band and when he writes, does not connect to the network 3G / 4G or make calls. is a mistake that just found this unit ... which makes the port of ROMs for this device and portability including future versions of android. It is not compatible with any other MTK6592 I know.
