Will this ever be possible?
Like probably not a actual app... but like dual boot?
where you can go into 2 different roms back and forth with no problems....
No sorry to burst your bubble
Dual booting a phone is really hard i mean dual booting a pc is already difficult but a phone will be more hard
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
i boot two systems ,i had to partitoin my internal memory on my own with partiton magic ,i can run ext4 system and rfs but everytime you want to run another rom u have to flash it to it so it takes 3 min out of Your daily schedule and if you go back another 3 .
but thats the filesystem, since you said ext4 and rfs i'm talking about actual ROMS since our phones have so much memory...
yes one partition EXT4 PARTITION! is one system (apss and whatever you have on it) , another partition is RFS PARTITON ! (with all apps u have put there) switchin back and forth the roms does not wipe setting u appiled to another rom so u switch back beatwen systems not losing your apps and stuff ( you can run different roms they dont have to match anyhow)
Crystal clear ?
You know fat32 fat ext4 jfs rfs are partitons right AND THERE IS ABOUT 8 MORE YOU CAN FORMAT YOUR MEMORY OR EXTERNAL SD
p.s if no1 is correcting me on this that means i am right?
If the data was indexed in a system exclusive method then it could be possible, but consider this how many 2009 Honda parts can you remove and put in a 1011 car........... not many, builders of the phone both hardware and software will never agree so.......... dual boots will be ported methods...... until some awesome dev here figures it out for the rest.........
dual boot worked for me try it out .
+1
Someone else posted about this the other day. Someone has written a bootloader that allows for dual booting different roms but I think it was for an HD2 or something. I'll try to find a link to it.

Here it is http://www.xda-developers.com/android/new-dual-boot-now-for-the-hd2/
If you can dual boot Windows Phone and Android on one device surely it's possible to have two different Android ROM's on the same device.
Since the bootloader is bypasased, is it possible to change the partition layout of the internal storage?

may i ask why exactly?
btw... wrong section...
why is not a good question, for android,
a partial answer would be because its possible on other phones.
i thought this is related to android devlopment and the bootloader dev so this would be the right section
i'm sorry if its not.
anyway the question is still unanswered

i am not sure if it will work... are u thinking about changing sizes of internal partitions or something like that?
can u guide me to the links where they have changed partition layout on other androids? will read up on the advantages/etc...
Here http://alpharev.nl/ and
here http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/10726-how-to-increase-desire-internal-storage/
The biggest advantage i can think of would be to reallocate wasted space to where its really need, which will depend on the user i guess.
This brings up another interesting thing to my mind.
Changing the filesystem.
It is possible in android, can't say about X10 though.
maybe just for the fun of it or maybe another filesystem may give better performance.
What about support for ext2 filesystem ? That would help wont it ?

@realunited123: well i can't say if ext2 will really help or not, its quite outdated now and i also don't think that it would be a good choice for fs on flash.
But btrfs or ext4 would be different.
btrfs specially has many features for flash memory.
But the main question is can these things be really done since the bootloader isn't cracked just bypassed, so would it still search the original partitions?
Lol i meant ext4. Damn swiftkey changes it automatically.
Sent from my X10 TripNMiUI
And also certain parts of nand can not be accessed/written without bricking the device. So there is a big chance it is not possible.

that would be big performance boost for our device.
with samsung galaxy s my mate using ext4, and file system performance went hight!
i am waiting for a sollution to change from ext2 (old very old) to ext4 !
anyway : i am using linux as desktop, and server , and PHONE! and only my pgone is locked to ext2....
actually currently we are on yaffs2 and not ext2

We are not on ext2. The reason the SGS sees such an improvement is because the original filesystem sucks. The X10's is yaffs2, which is good to begin with, so we would only see minimal gains, if any. zdzihu has had those modules for a long time and doesn't waste our time with them for that reason.
ext4 is not a good idea. While performance under ext4 may be better, yaffs2 is optimized for wear leveling and error correction under flash memory. Those people running ext4 on their internal flash are wearing out their NAND storage at up to twice as fast, possibly faster. Their phone will die much quicker.
This is possible yes. But we would need to have a modified flashtool to support it, and we would need a modified recovery build and some other firmware files for the modified flashtool to use. This is because we cannot access the boot partition or the kernel via recovery, so we can't run a fancy script like the brilliant CustomMTD script/patcher (for example - mainly for HTC phones if I remember correctly).
While I'm nearly certain that's the rough idea of what has to be done, I could still be wrong because it's beyond my ability.

Yeah but we may still use UBIFS or whatever.
The main thing here is that the users gets a choice and i don't see any problem if its through flashtool atleast for now.
and i think the ability to resize the partitions would also be a very useful thing since the rom partiitons seems to be excessively sized than required especially with custom roms.
Ok. I do not mean any offence to junghyun01.
However this is another method & the one that I personally use.
This requires: stock kernel & dual mode recovery (ClockWorkMod).
Some version of ClockWorkMod that come with custom kernels do not include the necessary options to format your sd-card.
To return to stock kernel on gingerbread or froyo, follow this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21238366&postcount=2
This is the easiest way to create sd-ext/2nd partition+swap partition on sdcard with our phones:
1: Backup all data from sdcard to computer *Important*.
2: Boot into ClockWorkMod by tapping touch-screen while on Sony Ericsson screen
WARNING: We will now delete all data on sdcard, that is why you made a backup.
3: Advanced => Partition SD Card => 512M or 1024M (depending how many apps you want to install & the size of your sdcard) => 0mb for swap size (or if using a custom kernel you can set a swap size of 128m) => Yes to format.
4:Power Off phone.
5:Remove sdcard and put into computer, put the files that you backed up to the computer back on the sdcard.
6:Insert sdcard back into phone and power on. Click thanks.
How to enable swap? Warning: This can & will shorten your sd-cards life. Read post #2!
(Swap will only work on a custom kernel!)
After flashing the rom of your choice, flash the add-on "x8EnableSwapPartition2.zip" in ClockWorkMod to enable swap or download ResetSwap from the market.
Credits:
junghyun01 go on give him a thanks for giving me the motivation to create this thread.
[email protected](me): Flashable add-on zip, guide, time, information. Click thanks!
x8EnableSwapPartition2.zip=Swappiness set at 40%.
x8EnableSwapPartition.zip=Swappiness set at Android default 60% or whatever % your rom developer has set it at.
More Information: (You don't really need to read this but if you are interested...)
Stock Kernel?? Oh man...
I personally think it is worth it for all users to flash back to stock kernel & dual mode recovery. Why? Just so they can partition their sd-card like this, as sd-ext will be formatted in Ext4.
Ext4=Best speed/reliability overall. Why would you still be using ext2/3???
Why only 128mb swap size?
Because it is wasteful to create a larger swap partition. It never gets used. I have never seen 128mb's of swap used on our phone & that is even with heavy games/apps running in the background. You are just making your sd-card size smaller for no benefit.
Why not just use Swapper2 from the market with a swap(.swp) file?
Swapper2 is notorious for slowing down your phone as it likes to auto-start all the time also a swap file will not be as fast as a swap partition.
Will SWAP shorten SD-card lifespan???
Yes it undoubtedly will. Will you be able to notice this in any way? Most probably not.
Using swap will cause intensive reading/writing in one region of the sd-card. All flash memory devices (including our NAND internal memory) have limited write cycles. Excessive reading/writing causes bad blocks on your sd-card. Some sd-cards have extremely poor write cycles, so they can & will burn out when using swap.
Some people believe it would take a full year or even longer of using swap to actually cause any noticeable effect on your sd-card. Even if it does cause bad blocks on you sd-card, when formatting your sd-card with most modern-day file systems, these blocks will be marked as bad blocks and they wont be used. This equals to an extremely slow decrease in total capacity of your sd-card (which will be close to unnoticeable) .
Having said all of that there has been reported cases where SD-Cards have burned out and stopped working almost directly after enabling swap. Coincidence? Who knows but...What you do & flash to your phone is your own decision & no one else is in any way responsible for what happens except you.
And another method if you need it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1445543
Or guide with pictures:
You can create an ext partition on your sdcard in windows by downloading the newest Easeus Partition Manager Here or at their Homepage.
After installing the program use the guide found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=10654666
I have tried this method and it works with Ext2 and Ext3.
I use alf kernel + Gdx 21
I already partition my sd card using mini tool partition wizard as follow
1. primary Fat32
2. primary Ext4
3. primary LinuxSwap
already flash the addon , but still no swap active when i check on terminal.
i see on your zip that it make swap on /dev/block/mmcblk0p3
but in mine there's only /dev/block/vold -> which is empty also
I don't know if my swap partition is load .
still there's /sys/dev/blok/179:3 which refer to mmcblk0p3
and on sys/block/mmcblk0
I'm not familiar with linux , so please give me a guide what to do.
thanks

Swap allows you to run more apps/processes at any one time. The android operating system will still use all of your real ram too.
What about the swapping coefficient, in the script is not defined. This number is showed in procent and defines the ratio of swap partition being used by the system.
One question,i using Reset Swap and everytime i reboot i need to go to app and activate swap again, thats normal? And if i flash the EnableSwap.zip?

Yes that is normal if using ResetSwap. This is because it never auto-starts by itself.
If you flash the add-on zip then swap will be auto enabled every boot.

Swapper Configuration? :-D Do you mean by any chance the app "Swapper"? Because I can't find any "swapper configuration" app anywhere...
Btw..: after enabling swap file with swapper I'm still unable to see any free swap memory within the terminal (free shows still 0 swap)
Although - it seems my phone is working better now... Placebo?

I am not the expert in these things. After installing swapper and enabling swap on the sd-card, my phone became very responsive. On clicking home button, main screen with widgets and icons appears instantly, no matter in which program or apps I am in. So I guess it did made the phone faster and responsive.

HI,
I just got my Z902 Zero Device. This device came with a PATCH.APK that normally should root the device.
The strange thing is that for some "root" app is working , but for others don't.
Finally , i want to make some modifications to my /System , but i wasn't able to remount RW.
[email protected]:/ # mount -o remount,rw /system
mount: Read-only file system
I tried several ways to remount it , so i don't think is related to command syntax
Strange thing also , is that ADB SHELL ID :
uid=0(root) guid=0(root)
also i got the boot.img, and default.prop
#
# ADDITIONAL_DEFAULT_PROPERTIES
#
ro.secure=0
ro.allow.mock.location=1
ro.debuggable=1
persist.sys.usb.config=adb
But still not able to remount /system
Any ideas?
Thanks,
I'll answer myself , in case someone is running in the same problem.
Actually the problems seems to be a corrupt /system partition.
Solution :
I Used a 8GB sd card to install lubuntu on it. Once done , i TAR the content of my /system , and DELETE (format doesn't work) the partition, and create again.
Done that i put the contains in again , and voila
particion is RW , and i'm able to play with it
Cheers!

Apparently even easier to install the MK802 II firmware (revision 2 include uinput.ko, can't confirm this , i install the one in .com site).
Not sure if the rw was obtain in the new firmware by the flash process, or just heritage of my previous manipulation.

You re root nandd is corrupted. Try this
1) download livesuite
2) put the sd card in z902
No ouput image
Wait about 1 minute
3)unplug z902 and remove sdcard
4) plug z902 to windows pc
5) install the drivers
6) flash the mk802 ii image , avoid 0912 version of it,has a bug That will not boot on second try
That should do it.
If you have further problems ,i ll try to write a procedure in next days

As far as i know Z902 it's MK802 II rebranded.
Here you have the procedure to flash this device
http://www.rikomagic.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=449
Nevertheless , for me is a LOT easier and faster to just put the sd card in the device and plug it in , and take it away 30 seconds after to put the device in rescue mode, and after that , flash with the livesuite.
I repeat , pay attention that you're not installing 2909 , is not going to boot at the second try. The original fw , as you will see is more new than the one that comes with the z902.
If you want to try 2909 , there's a workaround changing the playstore, didn't work for me.

I achieve to install CM10 in my MK802II (a z902 actually).
I got the compatibility zip from
http://*******/DXTcY
i downloaded CM10 from the XDA christian throy topic.
i downloaded gapss from same topic.
i got the CWM5 image for livesuit (don't remember where). So, now to work.
There's a procedure that use the SD card to put the pen in recovery mode... i found usefull to put the SDCARD IN and plug the device , wait 30-60 seconds, unplug and take the sdcard (the device is going to put himself in recovery mode by itself because etc..etc..etc..)
Once this is done , plug the device to a windows computer (7 in my case). The device is going to be detected , and you can use the drivers that come with livesuit.
Once recognized use livesuit to flash the CWM img. PLUG the device to your TV (Need to use a USB keyboard , also supports USB mouse, but you will have to search on how it works).
Now you are seeing CWM. Leave it there , and put the GAPSS , CM10 and compatibility zip in the sd card. Put the SDcard in the device.
Wipe EVERYTHING you see (also in advance options).
NOTE: DOWN (DOWN),UP(UP), LEFT (SELECT),RIGHT(BACK) in the CWM.
FLASH IN THIS ORDER :
CM10
GAPSS
Compatibility
Should take a while to boot first time (more than 4 minutes is not normal in case you're wondering , if is the case , restart , you did something wrong).
I'm having a problem gettoing WIFI working , but i'm looking in to it

It took a while to get through this process but I managed. However, neither CM9 or CM10 allow you to use wifi. In CM10 you can't even turn it on and CM9, it looks like you have turned it on but nothing happens. I guess it's back to the stock 0822 ROM...

I did. The boot animation is better. It seems pretty stable but I used the 0822 img which is the best one of the bunch for me. The only thing that was weird was how it was rooted. You couldn't make any changes to the system folder.
It seems like every rom has at least one thing that is annoying and so we have to choose the one that is the best of the worst.
Thats actually the same that i ve . Is actually the one for mk802 I think, check you device info.what it says?
The rw problem is related to corrupted partition and no the rom. I formated and now I m able to rw
