I'm tempted to be happy and optimistic about this. But please forgive me if I'll exercise restraint until ZTE makes a statement that everything is back to normal, the OTA servers are back online, etc, etc.
Somebody on Reddit is already claiming that the ban is going to be lifted. Or that in this case, here in XDA, "ZTE is back". Why can nobody read articles carefully? Spreading misinformation is never a good thing. The tweet basically says that both parties are working on a solution. Nothing more, nothing less. Also, ZTE was never gone, it still exist. So "ZTE is back" doesn't make much sense here.
Nevertheless, I'm stocking up on spare usb pcb and a battery in case this stays the way it is and no other, decent phone comes out in the next 2 years I'd want to dump $650+ on.
Lineage is a much better experience all around so any updates no longer get me excited. And there was always reason to be optimistic ZTE could reach a deal as while their transgressions were serious, they are not the same as being tied to Chinese intelligence and the party like Huawei is. The US government still won't use them but banning them outright only killed competition in China which might be good for the US in the long run.
This is the last Chinese phone I will own. Spending less is nice but I think we have reached a point where the battlelines are drawn and people should voting with their dollar. The Axon 7 for $325 was a great deal but Im willing to spend more for a better software experience next time and to support a 'Western' company, even if it is in Taiwan.
I wouldnt consider China an enemy and I marvel at the things we could all accomplish if we put aside our nationalistic garbage, but China will never be like that even if the West was. Fundamentally different views of the world and the future. It's time for Westerners to understand that. China will never be our friends. They dont think like that. It's not about good and evil or anything like that. They just believe they are better and believe they will, and should win. Once you understand Confucianism, you understand China. We either rise to the challenge or fail miserably. As a consumer I can do my small bit. If every Westerner did the same we could start to level the playing field.
And if Google could stop overpricing their Pixel line that would be great. They have zero need to turn a profit. You could easily argue that they should be taking a loss to get their hardware into people's hands in order to improve the inherent issues with Android.

That's a logical and reasonable response.
I lived and worked in China. I dont hate China at all. I just think people in the West should begin to understand China. China wouldnt give a thimble of water to a man on fire. Not because they hate the man on fire, but because they would save the water for themselves because they might need it someday. That's a totally different mentality from the Western mindset that they take advantage of. The best thing we can do is understand China, and all of our competitors. We give away far too much as a result of not understanding and assuming that Western ideals are the dominant ideals, even when capitalism is embraced.

If you want to stop the political bull**** on XDA, then stop parroting CNN and going "BUT MUH TRADE WAR!!11" ZTE violated an agreement. Another agreement was set up and they violated that one too. You can only give someone so many chances before you look like a fool.
Everyone should just be hopeful that ZTE isn't out and we might get an actually stable build of oreo that works with all the features of Android, LIKE ENCRYPTION

No.. this isn't actually a post about the Prime's problems... it's actually about how companies handle things when they screw up. A lot of people here seemed genuinely grateful for what Asus did postfacto... I'm not one of them because my bar is set higher. I expect more from the companies I buy from - well, when it's a $500 tablet anyway.
Here's an example of where the bar SHOULD be set.
A month or so ago, Google announced the Q - basically their version of the Roku or the AppleTV. Thing is, while it's innovative design, it kind of sucked at being an actual Internet appliance. Google admitted the Q was shipped too soon and had significant problems. They halted production.. and here's the kicker - everyone will get a free replacement. They don't even have to return the original. And if you preordered and haven't gotten yours, you get a free one.

They certainly didn't need to do this. Not an issue - not even a discussion point - Google wants to make sure you stay loyal and stick with them. Anything to make the customer happy. No attempt to try and gloss over the problem or shirk responsibility.

To be fair to ASUS, Google is a $207Billion company with almost $40B a year in revenue. The future of the company is hardly riding on them making a profit on their Nexus Q, heck it could be that no one's job is even riding on it given their business situation. Asus on the other hand is like a $6B company in US funds. Google could absorb financial hits that would completely BK or force massive layoffs at many other companies (like ASUS) without blinking. I think ASUS blew it with their QA on recent units but they have made some effort to try to set things right.
You can demand and expect completely-out-of-touch-with-the-rest-of-the-industry replacement/recall policies but you'll probably disappointed most of your life. Even mighty Apple told people they were holding their phones wrong when Antennagate hit. It probably makes more sense to learn your lesson and just move on.
To be honest, I think the world has enough/too many $100B+ companies already.

Yeah, I would never expect a smaller company like ASUS to be able to do something like this. But, the Prime really is such a mess in my eyes that it would take something drastic to get me to buy another ASUS product. When you have a seemingly pretty faulty device combined with the absolute horrid customer support (19 days now they've had mine, still waiting for parts) you lose me as a customer. Granted, I also have a faulty ASUS motherboard in my computer, so I have another reason to never buy from them again since that's 2 for 2 of the ASUS products I've ever owned having issues.
If things are better on the Infinity as far as GPS, wifi, blu tooth, build quality (like rear cameras not breaking), then ASUS should just bite the bullet and kill the TF201 and give at least early adopters a trade in. That's what it would take to make me happy, and even then they would still have a huge problem with their repair service. But, at least I would have a better chance of not ever having to deal with them.
This would never happen with Asus not because of money but simply because they don't give a f*ck about their customers.

That's honestly how I feel, and I feel that way 100% because of their terrible customer support. I understand things go wrong especially in this fairly new market of Android tablets. That's the time for your customer service to shine. Instead, they show us how much they care about us by having the worst service I've ever heard of.
ASUS Customer service in not. They could give a rat ask about problems with the Prime.
It is not a matter of how big Google is versus Asus. It is simply doing what is right. The Prime is junk. Asus knows it is junk. Fix it, or replace it.
We paid $500 for this tablet and anyone with any common sense would expect value for their money.
Just Received my TS. Although I like it I am wondering if there is any future for this device. The 6+ months delay seem like an eternity and what looked like a promising novelty is already lagging behind. And what makes me wonder is the apparent separation between the company and the first batch of users. How come that not one single bug seem to have been fixed? How come that there is still no OTA updates? Omate closed their official forum and is redirecting to xda for support, but where is Omate in this forum? And what about the possibility of switching to Android Wear, that looks like it will be the standard for this type of devices? I was a happy backer of their Kickstarter project, but at this point all I think is that I bought myself a Xmas present that was delivered at Easter!

Rumors are thet they are preparing TS2 so TS is something that used that as a learning base...

Agreed. Omate is done. They were done before they started shipping.
1. Warranty- HA! Null and void
2. OTAs, support, service- LOL
..... U get the picture....
If something goes wrong with your TS...I guess your only choice would be to contact Omeox. Omate certainly won't do anything and most likely won't be around to help. This has been their MO from the beginning. For example, the infamous BT problems and Omate's lack of dev support. This alone spelled disaster for the company and sealed the coffin for any future "free" help from the dev community. Lesson learned: ANY start-up MUST have, keep and strengthen the full support of the community devs.
And lastly, the Omate disaster has laid a major wake to future smartwatch, IGG or KS, campaigns. Its a real shame...now, for any fledgling tech trying to grab a foothold in this market, that truly has something new and innovative, will have to work twice as hard to get noticed.
All due to Rocki and LLP's lies, misleading marketing and "bait'n switch" game.

While all this is definitely a shame, one bright side out of this is that I have a damn cool watch, and I paid about fair market value for it (the other Umeox watches go for similar prices). I guess I'm lucky in that mine works fine, so I don't have to deal with Omate again.
I realize that some specs have changed which kinda sucks. But I never intended to go swimming or anything with this, and the other spec changes are minor to me and don't really reflect anything in real world usage. The patch available really make this thing a good, usable, android watch phone (thanks again, Loki!). So I'm at least happy with what I got out of this whole ordeal.
Will I back anything on kickstarter (or others) again? Hell no! But at least I don't feel like I got screwed out of my money.
LLP was bragging on his g+ account about Omate's skills. While I think it is impressive they managed to produce a product, the fact remains that the hardware they used is debatable theirs and if what Loki has said is true, the software is Omate's main field of expertise and that in itself is of a questionable quantity.
I just do not understand Omate. I am not fussed about waterproofing and what not, but not being open about it until after the orders were taking just isn't cricket.
And then this whole lark about not having service centers in your country bla bla bla. Omate should just accept some things will break and have made back up watches to replace those which do. Those which are broken could be shipped back, repaired and resold.
The lack of anyone from Omate here seems really odd. I guess it could be a language issue but I doubt it.
What puzzles me is what did Omate expect to happen? For XDA to do all the work? For the project to develop a life of it's own?
I do think Kickstarter has lost an awful lot of credit, but I do not think the blame should be theirs. Omate just caused PR disasters one after another. Even now, the manner of the conduct online is extremely unprofessional.
Would I buy another Omate (TS2)? Most likely not. I love my TS and think it is super cool, but I want a device which will grow and has a loving community behind it. It is clear there is no love for this device now.
Unless Omate have some secret stuff going on in the background such as a huge update and a ton of new features, I don't see anything special about the Omate. I had an EC309 and with the exception of Omate's sd slot, it could do everything the TS could.
Personally, I think Neptune Pine will win people's hearts. It has had a bumpy ride but recently started being VERY open about production problems and delays. Perhaps it takes an Omate to get these Kickstarter companies to step up a notch.
I'll probably buy a Neptune Pine and other smartwatches. I don't think Omate has killed people's love for the concept, but it has left a bitter taste in many peoples mouths regarding crowd funded projects.
Hyperthetically say if we were to developer/begin a new Smartwatch or smartwatch company. Thru market research we established that there was a massive demand for something similar to the Omate or the A.I. Watch, I.e. a mobile notification and stand alone Android with a sim card wifi, gps BT ...etc.
First we started to source the unit (as designing a new one would take too long and cost too much and it would be copied) what would be the 'do's & don'ts'?
Keep it civil pls and dont say do the exact opposite of Omate... although that would probably go a long way.
It's more of about the way Omate managed the release rather than the product. I accept there would be issues in development.
What is odd is that the watch seems to be available to buy on their China site with no mention of it being a pre-order/ waiting God knows how long till it turns up. Does this mean that they're actively selling them now in China before sending the backers theirs?

Doesn't seem like it. They still have that annoying avatar with the Omate being splashed. Their Chinese site still has the specs up. I think they still say the camera is 5 mega pixel.

This has been discussed before, but i went into a store today and dealt with a guy who is a complete idiot regarding my device. Went in discussing network, and had to explain to the guy the difference between Band 13 and Band 4 aka Lte vs XLTE. Wow. I thought the people advertising these phones to people would know what it means. Anyway I am not generalizing all Reps, just some i ha e dealt with.

From my experience in retail this is half the CS reps' fault and half Store level management. While it is the Associates' responsibility to understand the products and services they sell, it is also the Store Managers' responsibility to make sure their Associates are trained and knowledgeable. It is in my opinion that the work ethic in this country has fallen too low, we are too concerned with the bottom dollar.

I don't know how I forgot that. I agree that training is needed to know what they are selling. I mean, I have asked before what does XLTE mean for usage and they said it just means it is faster which is not necessarily true.

It is wonderful to live in an age where information is at our fingertips, most anything can be found if we just look in the right places (i.e. Google). I find it amazing how dumb people seem to be getting when we have more knowledge at our disposal than ever before in history. True Irony.

I never ask the reps at vzw, I feel like they're just feeding us bull and things we want to hear. I completely agree with finding answer on the web.
From my perspective of working in retail I can tell you that the average person walking into Verizon (or any other tech store) the last thing they are concerned about is stuff like Band 13 vs Band 4. Let alone probably couldn't care to know what it is or other stuff we here on XDA take for granted like root, unlocked bootloaders, ROMs, etc. Most people are more concerned about stuff like basic overview of coverage and if whatever device can stream Pandora... and if they are getting a "good deal" on 1 gigabyte of data per month which they all think is "more than enough."
I'm not trying to excuse why a rep doesn't know something like why XLTE is better than traditional LTE but I'm just putting into perspective on what a typical sales rep really gets asked on a daily basis. That in turn typically is... "can I play Angry Birds on this here S4?"

True. This lady on my same trip, about 40, was asking how she could download games like candy crush. and if the installing bar meant it was working. But when I said band 4 and 13 I meant that XLTE allows more bandwith.
As a rep for multiple types of products at one time or another I'd say finding that one person who knows what they are talking about is rare. These guys also don't get trained that deeply on products. I remember doing the Apple training and half the stuff I glazed over because I just didn't care. But if the rep decides to spend their free time researching this stuff it should be up to them. Otherwise the company should fund the time to teach them. Don't expect a rep to arm themselves with knowledge with a crappy paying job

I totally agree with that. They should really have proper training on these things. Really one of the things I noticing with the training is it was rushed and if I wanted a great more deal of detail I went and found it myself. Even the reps for the companies that come in and visit the store couldn't provide that info. I remember talking with a Samsung rep and she had all the shiny info about the s pen but nothing about the hardware specs of the phone. I think those of us who want that info are a dying breed. And with stores not being able to provide hours to properly train the employees you fall into this seriously sick pit of untrained people. So let's blame the company's who don't supply time enough to train employees. The again that's how we get the savings lol and they still make profit

Why worry about Huawei when Google, facebook and the countries intelligence are already spying.
I think the problem lies with 5G, Huawei are trying the set up the infrastructure for 5G across Asia, Europe and the US amongst over areas. Which means that they'll have a back door to almost everything connected to 5G.
5G will connect to everything, even LED lights in your home which basically gives them a 3D view of every area 5G covers. Whoever has access to it will know where you are nearly all the time.
The timing makes it obvious the steps against Huawei is derivative of the US trade war with China rather than concerns over spying.

I wonder if it makes sense to care about that. Huawei prices are dropping and people try to sell there used phones. A good moment to buy something like that.
Am I totally wrong in thinking that Trump will probably not stop xda developers from developing updates for Huawei phones? If so I do not care about Huaweis updates or wether they include Gapps
But sadly XDA is not able to develop updates for Huawei beacause of locked bootloader etc, so what you are trying to say is......?

I do not own a huawei phone (yet) and am still investigating about existing roms. Is there really no easy way to unlock bootloader for huawei devices in general? That would definitely stop me from buying huawei.

No there is no easy way, even no way at all at the moment.
I am quite relaxed at the moment, for existing phones there will still be support, future phones could be a HUGE problem. But to be honest, A LOT switch their phones after 2 years or even before, so most people will not be touched by this ban who are currently owning this awesome phone.
I don't think Huawei spies. Even if they did, are they the only big players who do it?
US already spies on their citizens and on the world - Edward Snowden told the world and now he's not allowed back into his country. Facebook also sells your data if you remember that Cambridge Analytica drama.
Do people just forget what's happened?
Agree, i am total sure that Apple has a file with my data and i didn´t even touched an apple device in my life
that doesn´t make spying good, but i also think huawei is not doing more/less than the rest

this is not my attitude towards phones. Mine is rather: use the device until warranty is over (or a bit earlier) then root and install a custom rom and use the phone until it is really dead. Unfortunately it seems like that did not take too long on my Asus Zenfone selfie ...
I also use phones quite long, but really a lot people get a new one every year or every two years by contract. The same people which are now selling their phones because of panic^^
if you plan on using custom rom/modification huawei is not suitable for you, it is just not possible. maybe the android ban will change something, but nobody can say that, you will have to wait to see what will happen.

You surely have heard the awesomely cheap prices of the Huawei phones, Xiaomi, and other chinese brands. And you'd be wise with your money to invest for a Chinese smartphone, but there's a catch, every American company makes their cellphones in China as well.
Apple as a notable example of this. Where the people working at their factories in FOXCONN have a reputation for killing themselves. Why? Excessive loads of work and a poor working ambient.
But this post goes even further than criticizing the treatment of employees in the PRC, but the bad treatment of their citizens in general, China is a repressive authoritarian state where people are not allowed to say think or act in ways contrary to the government and if the government thinks you're a threat then rest assured it'll make your life a living hell.

Very simple, yet dark.
Chinese companies syphon all the info they can possibly gather about you, even Nokia was found to send data to the Chinese government.
It is a threat to your security and a support to the current oppressive regime in China to buy their cellphones.
So what's my recommendation? Buy phones made in India, Vietnam or South Korea. Samsung is a good example and is why I bought my phone from them, mine was made in Vietnam and I'm happy with it. Except that I have a not so popular model and I have to be active in the dev community to push it forward. But that has its own beauty!

There are some companies that send data to governments, they use operating systems such as HydrogenOS as far as I know. I don't know much about these things but I can assure you this thing is very dangerous and can lead to uncountable threats in the future

I know right? The worst thing is that the common consumer doesn't care about it. So they'll buy a phone from the shadiest cheapest company you could possibly imagine and won't even try to install a custom rom.
A phone, which is a conglomerate of plastic, glass, metal and other solid components, cannot spy, whether it has been produced in china or elsewhere: if someone is spying, it is the apps that are installed, the rights that are granted.
It is the user who enables espionage and not a chinese or other resident manufacturer. See also here

Yes, that's right, but it's not necessary for the phone itself to be spying, maybe it's the system that plays the spy. Like China's Hydrogen firmwares, this thing is like trying to find a needle in a haystack for users, i.e. they don't think about such things in general as it poses a danger to the user. I don't know much about this thing but I recently read about cases revealed by phones, the internet is a big and dangerous world and used as a means of gathering information in various subjects، and don't forget that a lot of people have been investigated just because they searched for certain topics on the internet i.e. countries are watching literally everything.
do you have any proof that e.g. Huawei is spying on people John Doe? you don’t, because there isn’t any, there isn’t any evidence of intention, there is nothing there, just smoke and mirrors. even a mr. Trump could not present any evidence.

remember that as soon as you switch on an Android device, where it doesn't matter whether you registered it with Google or not, Google starts spying on you. wondering why always chinese manufactures are said to be the culprits?

as simple as that, just imagine you`re talking to your best friend that has just purchased a Chinese or other branded phone; are you going to talk about that country`s politics or about the device itself? I bet you`d just say, "ok bud, enjoy your phone although I`m not such a fan because ... takes worse pictures ..." and nicely move on for a beer and continue talking about girls. But somehow here on XDA you feel like, behind a keyboard, expanding your thoughts further to political aspects well no, we do not host here such topics.
please keep this in mind and next time try to be device centred rather than political.
