After being part of the problem in cluttering up the Rooting threads, I figured that many people don't know where to ask questions.
GENERAL INFO:
Please direct all information-related inquiries to this thread for discussion.
The purpose of the current development thread is for developers to share information, the rest of us can discuss here.
For those that are unaware, "Rooting essentially gives you total control over the OS. You can add/remove programs/files from the device that are locked, flash custom roms, recovery images, themes, backup installed apps and lots of other things.
**EDIT**
Apologies on not updating the thread, as stated earlier...if anyone wants to edit this top post, just send me a PM and i'll amalgamate and post up.
FAQ:
What is ROOT?:
Rooting essentially gives you total control over the OS. You can add/remove programs/files from the device that are locked, flash custom roms, recovery images, themes, backup installed apps and lots of other things. (As Stated Above)
How do we get ROOT for the X10?:
There are alot of developers working on cracking the X10; Sony put a lot of work into locking the X10 down.
There are many ways to root your X10 now, and including several one-touch apps that will root for you.
Does ROOTING unlock my X10?:
No it does not.
I have an X10a (or X10i), can I use the X10i (X10a) method to ROOT?
Short Answer is no; the files are different. Don't be so lazy and follow instructions.
The ROOT didn't work, what can I do?
Here's the thing, if it's bricked/non-working...search the forums, chances are there's someone out there that has done what you've done and the issue may already be solved. ONLY POST A NEW TOPIC IF THERE IS ZERO INFORMATION REGARDING YOUR SITUATION.
When looking for info; here is a good place to start:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=711969
Can I put newer versions of Android on my X10 after ROOT?
You sure can, but unless you know how to cook the rom yourself...you'll just have to wait like the rest of us. Keep your eyes peeled and wait for the good stuff to start popping up.
Thnx for the summary very much appreciated
Thanks for the update. Definitely making progress.
Flashing via SETool does require additional software and file.
I have try as jerpelea point out what to do but still no success.
Also mobilezonerm and ceyad get the same error flashing root boot.sin
Processing ACPU files
PROCESSING: boot.sin
FATAL ERROR "HASH_VER (Block_verification_failed)" IN "MEMORY_CLASS"
error while uploading DATA block
Break.
Elapsed: 17 secs.

We need SETool box (HW) + SEtool1.06 (SW) and alternate baypass file for X10
Only missing piece is the alternat bypass file so we can flash unsigned image to X10
I'm on a quest for it but still no luck
lets hope lollylost can come up with something
thanks a lot... for opening this thread...
we non developers / noobs can discuss stuffs regarding rooting here instead of messing up with the development thread...
Re: X10 Rooting General Inquiries; Non-Development Discussion
Fingers crossed it will work!

Good job to the developers here at XDA... Now I'm crossing my fingers for a 2.1 Custom Rom with all the moxier stuff taken out as well as Timescape..
what and all can we expect from rooting ... pros and cons...
heard nexus got multi touch after rooting ...
is our x10 hardware capable of multitouch ?
anyway in general what can we expect ... features... you know while they are at work , we can dream of great stuffs to hit x10 ....
X10 cannot do multitouch, the hardware is incapable.
The main advantage root should give us is to be able to load custom ROMs onto the device, to get Android 2.1 now and 2.2 when it comes out.

even without true multitasking i would expect at least pinch to zoom. i have a feeling phone suffers from the same problem as nexus one, g1 and the sapphire. it can not distinguish the two sets of coordinates. it might associate thumb1's x to thumb2's y and visa versa. this does not allow it true multitouch but pinch to zoom would work since the motion is away from each other.

Hey,
Got a couple of questions I'm hoping one of you can help with.
Got an X10 obviously and access to EMMAIII. What I can do is flash the X10 with a very early release of firmware which has root access.
My question really is are there any custom ROMs available?

The only one is the one jerpelea made, which is still based on the stock 1.6 rom, but is rooted and has some apps removed. It's on this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=681886
When everyone has root access, developers will probably start trying to create a 2.1 or 2.2 rom if we have to wait untill after froyo is released. We could do this by looking at nexus one roms, and taking drivers from it - although the camera is different etc.
I've stickied this thread. Hopefully it will help users see it to stop cluttering of this forum

Wait a minute... With SEUS, we could downgrade our firmware, so if you upload your early release, we could maybe all have root access ?
It's just an idea...

You can't.
SEUS will flash only signed files.
Latest info: Unsigned flash in X10 protected by rsa 2048 algo.
Jerpelea seems to be lying about root.

Also from my topic the laser said
ransack semc factory in china.
bribe semc security engineer.
find a way to calculate rsa 2048 private key in appropriate time with appropriate efforts.
....
to be short - dream on.
Hey guys, I have a thunderbolt and would like to learn how to root, flash, all that good stuff.
Problem is, I don't know much about this stuff. I looked around, but couldn't find a link or a thread that was like an educational tool. If anyone knows where it is, it'd be much appreciated. Or if someone could let me know the basics, that's be good to.
I know I have to root the phone first, but I'm not sure how to save my contacts and past information(old texts). Also, I'll be rooting from a macbook.
Thanks in advance.
Why hello there Ryan!
There are several methods available to you, as well as several guides, most of which can be found here
In particular, you'll find a great guide to rooting on Mac osx here
GL and HF! And make sure you read ALL OF THE INSTRUCTIONS before you start. Links may die, and if you're 1/2 way through rooting it won't be good

+1, that's the stuff just remember to post any questions you may have in the Q&A section and not the development one! Happy hacking!

Welcome,
For rooting I used the "[ROOT] MR1/OTA PermRoot + Unlock Bootloader - Safer/Easier 5/12/2011" method by jcase. Once I got ADB set up on Windows it could not have been easier. Just take your time, follow the directions to a tee, and all should be well.
Since rooting I have spent a lot of time trolling these forums, using the search function ;- ) to find the information that I need, and more or less hacking on my Thunderbolt the my great delight and my wife's displeasure.
Have fun and enjoy.
Hello all,
Apologies if this question has been answered elsewhere I did have a bit of a search but couldn't see the answer for certain.
I've just acquired an X10 mini pro, and am looking into custom roms. I was just wondering if there's any complications to this device that I'm missing.
I also own a HTC Desire Z, which required lots of messing round with downgrading firmware and installing custom bootloaders before you can flash custom roms.
Am I just expecting things to be more complicated than they actually are, and the X10 is relatively easy to flash (i.e. root, install CWM and flash away)?
Or is there some difficult bit I've missed.
Thanks in advance for the answers!
EDIT : Nevermind, apparantly I have an inability to read! found my answers now.
Hi!!
I'm new to the world of rooting, and I read a lot about it. I understand the concept but when I read posts on how to root my device (Xperia S) i get very confused because they start talking about flashing and some stuff but no one explains how to do it, I mean, I need a tutorial for noobs. I read this one for example: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1742992 but there is no explanation for every step. A video would be very useful but all that I found is s***. I want to root it the way it is explained in the post that I linked, since it's specifically for my device. I don't want to use generic programms like KingoRoot. Sorry for any grammar mistake (I'm from Spain) and thank you in advance
Try one click root options like KingRoot and KingoApp, or check this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=42659596#post42659596

Hello,
I am trying to root and install Marshmallow on a Zenpad z380C, which uses a different processor from the Z380KL.
Following the advice on this forum, I googled Root and the model (in various formats). The searches mostly lead to sites that look like scams - some of them even claim to have gleaned their info and roms from XDA!
I am still looking to root and a marshmallow rom.
