Storage issue - Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 Questions & Answers

I have the 32GB varient,
the usable Internal storage it shows is 23GB,
remaining free space it shows is: 2.9GB,
It is rooted, and I selected all files and folders (hidden files included) on Internal storage to check there total size:
it shows 10.04GB (on both ES and X-plore)
So,
out of 32GB, I only get 23GB for myself (lets just give 9GB away for the system, no big deal)
out of 23GB, I used 10.04GB and the remaining free space is just 2.9GB
So, 10.04+2.9 = 12.94GB, is all I get to use ? out of freakin 23GB ?!
Why !? Where the hell did 23-12.94 = 10.06GB go ?!!!
now, please dont tell me that the OS needs 9GB+10.06 = 19.06GB for the device to work correctly !
That too out of freakin 32GB ! Why would anyone call this phone a 32GB varient now ?
PS: I suck at maths.

It is something wrong to your data partition. try to fix it by using command flash 'fastboot flash data.img' separately over fastboot mode
extract data.img from the ROM you using

Of course, without wipe & erase data partition you cannot fix the issue since it is the wrong info of data partition leading to the OS cannot recognize the full size of data partition.

[Q]Lost Internal Flash Partition of Moto Atrix 4G

Hi, All
Once I formated my internal flash partition of moto atrix 4g wrongly with ext4. And I found the internal flash partition was never recognized by system any more. I tried to flash new ROM of ICS, but no luck. Is there any way to get it back as original? Thanks in advance!
You should try doing it via moto-fastboot:
moto-fastboot erase sdcard
That should enable you to at least format the internal memory in the OS.
By doing that you will, of course, lose all files from your internal memory because of the format.

Hi, vladeco
Thanks for your reply, I'll have a try and let you know if it's working or not.

[Q] Safely formatting internal storage

After some 2+ years of constantly changing ROMs, I've noticed that my i9100 shows more often than not the message of "your storage is getting full" or whatever it says. It does not work by clearing apps' data or even removing some of them because it ends up showing the warning soon. Also, factory reset has proved not to do much, since it just does a data wipe.
So I have decided to proceed with a format by entering Recovery > Mounts & storage > Format sdcard.
I just want to check first wether I will be able, after the format has finished, to flash CyanogenMod back from the same recovery (having placed it in the external SD card, which I understand is not formatted together with the internal storage) and have it working all ok, or the format will disable me from doing something else.
So my questions are:
That 'format sdcard' option in the Recovery means the internal storage, right?
The external SD card (the actual physical one) is not affected by the format, right?
Will I be able to flash CyanogenMod back again from the same Recovery after the format?
In case yes, any reboot in between the format and the flashing would brick my phone?
Help is much appreciated! :laugh:

well as i had flashed a lot of Roms too, maybe i can help you...i'll try!
after formatting sdcard, u wont lose ROM. u will just format your sdcard(12 gb i think).
1) i think the "format sdcard" option is supposed to mean the internal storage. but in some roms that i flashed, sometimes the sdcard mean the external sdcard and EMMC means the internal sdcard...so first take a look. go to install zip and select install from internal sdcard or external sdcard and look up in the screen, if it shows that u are in /sdcard or in /emmc, so u can know what sdcard are u really going to format
2) if u select to format the internal sdcard, it will only format the internal sdcard. nothing else.
3)well, as i said in the beginning, you won't lose rom in the format...u just formated sdcard, the rom and its stuff are still there, in the device storage(not sdcard or external sdcard, but in a card that is only for system/phone stuff(its like the phone has 2 cards. one u can use and send stuff(12gb) and the other one is for system files(2gb))
4) i think it would not brick it, since u just formated the sdcard, the rom is still on your phone but in the device storage, like i said above.
the ROM files arent stored in internal sdcard or external sdcard(those u can send files by usb), they are stored in the storage of the device that is only for system files. so if u do a format it wont affect Rom or Recovery.
hope it helped a little...cheers
Short notice from my side: I doubt formatting your sdcard will help to solve your original problem (low memory). This message appears if the /data space (those 2GB where all the system settings and application data are stored) is almost used completely. The easiest way to clean up this data is a system reset (which will make you loose all your data) or you need to look whether there are applications occupying much data there and remove these apps / tell them to store their data on /sdcard (if this is possible) or to selectively remove some log files / temp data. But in this you should be very careful, because removing the wrong data might cause strange system behaviour.

I think that is not quite the problem I am faceing now. I explain myself: when I get that "storage almost full" message, if I check on Settings > Storage, the Internal Storage section (1,97 GB in total) shows an availability of only 205 MB and the bar is half full (see attached). First incoherence. I try to update any small app such as, for example, Bitcoin Wallet (1.3 MB) and it says it can't be updated because there is not enough space. Incoherent with the bar shown. Also, if I navigate to /data, it shows there is an amount of 2.31 GB inside that directory (incoherent with the amount shown by the Storage Manager. Other data folders, such as the one in /sdcard/data or the one in /data/data, are always smaller (3 MB and 425 MB respectively, also don't match any of the figures shown by the Storage Manager).
Some ROM installs ago, I remember I was able to install around 190 apps and no problem at all, and now I'm 160 and have to keep removing apps when I want to install more.
That's why I think my problem is not related to data, or fixed by a data wipe or factory reset. I understand there are too many files inside that are just lost from ROM to ROM, and not even the system know where do they belong to. It is running everything but fluent. I don't even remember what Project Butter is :silly:

Thanks for your help, dude! Much appreciated.
Anyway, I feel that, if formatting sdcard does not wipe everything, maybe then what I need is to go Recovery > Mounts and storage > format /system, format /data, etc. All of them except for the actual physical sdcard (wether it is /emmc or /sdcard) and the directory in which the recovery "lives".
So I have new questions now:
If I formatted /system, would the phone be bricked or the Recovery would still allow me to install a CM ROM stored in the sd card?
Is there any of the directories shown in Recovery > Mounts and Storage that represents the actual Recovery partition/space?
There's no recovery partition you can format.
You can format system, preload, and data partition.
But flash a ROM right after.
There are flashable scripts (ROM wipe or ROM nuke) you can use. It does all the formats and wipes, and even back up some of your folders.

It's a known bug, that Android's performance is decreasing very much as soon as there is less than 10% free on /data. Additionally I wouldn't trust the graphics you see, because especially if you have man small files, the space occupied on "disk" is much higher than the file size. If they are only adding the file size of the files stored there this will be misleading. As far as I know the block size is 4kb, so each file takes at least 4kb of the memory. You can try to move some apps to /sdcard, but this works only to an external one, so you can free some space. Otherwise have a look on /data/system/dropbox or /data/system/usagestats if you can find some files which can be removed.

well, as Sergeileduc said, u can't format Recovery. so answering your questions:
1) yes, you would still be able to flash any other Rom, since formatting /system does not affect recovery. Wiping this partition will remove Android from the device without rendering it unbootable, and you will still be able to put the phone into recovery or bootloader mode to install a new ROM.
2) i dont think so...u can't format recovery...
hope it helped you...cheers!
well the 4rth question is no it wouldent brick your phone it will just hang at the galaxy s logo p.s thanks for helpin me on the other fourm
Just to add my own experience.....
Some months ago, my phone was suffering from poor performance (I was running CM10.1 at the time)
I decided to do a full format to totally "pristine" wipe my phone and start fresh. I copied a fresh version of the rom and gapps to my removable micro SD card and rebooted into CWM. I formatted cache, dalvic, preload, emmc and sd.....then just to be certain, I factory reset too.....
After that and while still in CWM, I flashed the rom and gapps and rebooted without issue......I believe this is what you want to do, so to answer your question. ...yes it is safe and possible to do this.....my phone is proof of that.....

[Q] Not enough space for ROM slot 1. Safe Strap.

Trying to install a ROM for the first time and I'm using Safe Strap. I try to install a ROM on slot 1 or any other ROM slot for that matter and it says I don't have enough space for my Data partition. How can I make more space? I tried wiping the internal storage using Safe Strap but it gives me an error. Any suggestions?

Try to use clean master to clean app and system cache,and put some big data app in the ext-sd,it's an intuitive app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cleanmaster.mguard
for a rom you need at least 2 gb
Some rom will boot only in rom slot 1 with safe strap,(all cyanogen mod "CM 10..1" for exemple) read the developer info

before flashing a rom, i made factory reset.
Did u try factory reset/wipe?
Yes, if you have a ton if pics, music, downloads, etc on your internal memory transfer it to micro sd. Stated above "For a rom you need at least 2 gigabytes" is mis leading,(if not referring to total partition size) as you are givn a choice of 1, 2 or 3 gig space. I have never used anything over 1gig, and never ran out if space/memory. Factory reset does not clean your phones storage.. I suggest manually deleting/ formatting for best results to get your space/memory back.

SafeStrap uses the space on your internal sdcard for creating slots.
Apart from the data, it creates two more partitions viz system and boot so the amount of free space required is (sizeOf) data + 900 MB.
So if you chose say 1GB for data, then you must have about 1.9 GB of free space on your internal sdcard.
Confirm before you try to create a slot.

No you can't change the stock system partitions.
This thread is for creating partitions on sdcard using a specific recovery. This is not universal.

[Q] wiping internal storage in moto e using TWRP wipe internal partitions?

My phone Moto E has 4Gb storage but only 2.2 Gb available to users. My phone supporting removable-SD card also. This 2.2Gb is named as "Internal Storage" in settings/storage. I am planning to flash cyanogenMod 11 M12, i have backed up everything. I dont want any user data like photos, media, apps in that 2.2 Gb internal storage. i want to start a fresh as like when i bought new phone. In advanced wipe there is six partitions
/dalvik cache
/System
/data
/internal storage
/cache
/micro sd card
I thought user installed apps are stored in internal storage. using storage partition software i found that both /data partition and /internal storage partition have same size of 2.2Gb. If both are same then why TWRP show data and internal storage as different partitions?
If both are not same
how /data different from /system? and
how /data different from /internal storage?
I read that wiping data/cache/dalvik would not create any problem for flashing new ROM.
shall I wipe everything except /micro-sd card to flash new ROM?
Will any problem arise if i wipe /internal storage so that i could not flash new ROM?
Because of data and internal storage confusion i could not proceed further please help. thanks in advance.

I think you are getting confused a bit
Remember when you want to flash a new rom just use the default (normal) wipe that you get in Twrp. This will wipe your system, cache and dalvik cache and data.
Now internal storage is your 2.2 gb space.
And microsd is your sd card. If you want format your internal storage or microsd select that too.
Hope this is clear!!

If you wipe internal storage whatever you have in 2.2 gb space will be deleted.
So if you have any images or other files that you want to backup from internal storage then save it in your sd card.

Ok Sir,
Ist I want to say what I'hv got from your answer (correct me if I'm wrong).
According to Your ans those basic & mandatory partitions (android file system & structure) are acquiring near about ~1.8 gb out of 4 gb( in moto e internal memory) & the rest i.e. ~2.2 gb is usable. Am I right??
If it's right then what happen when it's being flashed with custom ROM(cm13 in this case). Coz during this process we need to wipe out internal storage+ cache & newer ROM take place the older ROM( stock ROM in moto e) in system partition.
So that mean I should get back that ~1.8 gb which contain those mandatory partitions & rest ~2.2 gb space for user access.
But in my case after flashing with cm13, I'm getting ~2.2 gb as total space & ~800 mb is acquired (after fresh installation of CM13+ CM13 update+ pico Gapps).
Now I'hv ~(2.2-0.8)= 1.4 gb internal space for my use. I hv no idea where's that 1.8 gb & how it's used.
I hope now u can understand my concern in a better way.
I think I'll never be able to recover that ~1.8 gb (w/o damaging Internal memory) as we never get exact same amount of space as commercialized by manufacturers for use but I'm not sure....
Need ur opinion n help...

Either you damage your internal memory or not, you're Not getting that 1.8gb space.
Moto E (XT1022) has 4gb internal storage which has been divided as following (see the image):
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Now regarding your confusion, you're thinking that wiping all those partitions is going to give you 4gb space to play with...
Nope :|
Actually look at the image above each partition has been assigned a definite storage and can't be modified/changed/re-assigned (not yet).
So look at that image again you'll see that system partition has been given a 896mb of storage out of 4gb.
So whichever Rom you flash gets installed only in that much space. In my case as you can see I've 185mb free in system partition and no that free space can not be used as data partition (or any other partition).
If you want you can store files in cache partition (as this partition mainly remains useless in custom ROMs).
Good luck.

Ok Sir, that's very informative & I'm sure it'll help me a lot to clear my confusion & also will lead me to right direction to google some more information on it.
I'hv some more quarries related to it if u help then that will be valuable added information..
1. what kind of data is exactly contained in that system partition??
2.Is that system partition wiped out during process (flashing custom ROM) or it's remain untouched during this process (not available to user!! no problem).
That's all... n once again thank u very much.

1- The Android System/ROM itself is stored in system partition.
2-Yep it does. Old rom gets wiped and new rom gets flashed.

Lost 8GB of internal storage

Hello everyone.
I lost 8GB of internal storage after a bad flash. I tried installing a custom ROM but flashing got stuck for a few hours, so I powered off the phone.
After re-downloading the ROM and reinstalling in TWRP, my phone now only shows 24GB of internal storage, even in TWRP.
Wiping the phone (advanced wipe with everything checked, format Data or Factory Reset) didn't solve the problem. Neither did flashing an original Xiaomi fastboot ROM.
Any ideas what else I could try?

Same with me.
In a 32 gb model the 8 gb is used for internal partitioning. 3 gb for system files. 1 gb for cust partition (used by miui only which the dev was able to use for treble support) and the remaining 3 to 4 gb is being used by internal scripting and blob files. (The files used to run android in the first place, such as boot partition and other things)
Thank you.
I flashed Lineage 14.1 and my phone now shows 29 GB of internal storage.
