Bad battery - Kindle Fire HDX 7" & 8.9" Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

My Kindle Fire HDX 8.9" from 2013 is having MAJOR battery issues in that when it drops to 30 or below the battery percentage will just drop to nothing and the device will turn itself off until charged again. So if anyone knows of a good replacement battery on amazon that would be good otherwise I will be replacing the thing with a Huawei MediaPad M5 8.4" which has a 8.4" 2560x1600 IPS Panel a msd slot as well as supporting OTG and running Android 8 by default which means I will be able to run newer apps that require Android 5+ since my HDX is still running 4.4.2 or so. Also has both 2.4ghz and 5ghz bands for wifi so I can use both my MOGA Pro Power for emulators and things like Moonlight while still having great wifi performance. So yeah its taken forever for a decent replacement for the Kindle Fire HDX to come out since you are skimping on one thing or another with the newer HD tablets that have replaced the HDX. Yeah it sucks that Amazon has basically killed the cheap but powerful HDX line for weaker specs all around. The Mediapad m5 will also support my FiiO E18 DAC/Amp for my Audio Technica ATH-m50x unlike the HDX which lacks OTG.

Quality replacement batteries are hard to find and more difficult to install due to copious use of glue during assembly. Good chance you'll crack the screen or damage other components while attempting to crack open the HDX case... assuming you can find a replacement battery that has not been sitting on the shelf (or extracted from a dead unit) for 4+ years.
Consider a permanent tether to an external battery of modest size/weight as an alternative. Works for some an a lot less expensive.
Unlocked HDX devices can run fully featured, stable Android 7 based ROMs. All HDX devices also support 2.4/5 GHz WiFi regardless of ROM. Obviously no external storage or SD card slot. Bluetooth remains problematic on non-KitKat based ROMs. MediaPad M5 is in a different league on various dimensions. I don't see a direct comparison between the two. Good luck on whatever path you choose.

Since the generic case I use with my tablets fits a range of sizes the different deminsions of the M5 aren't really a problem for me. Yeah I may be losing half an inch in screen size but thats not a problem for me. And as for the battery like I said trying to get a great new one is nearly impossible so yeah I am aware of that hence trying to find a replacement tablet and since android tablets aren't being created much any more particularly with specs I am personally looking for its been nearly impossible to find one for years. This is honestly the closest I have gotten yet.

M5 caters to a narrow audience. If the specs, capabilities/limitations and price point meets your needs it may well be an ideal solution. For many a gently enjoyed HDX from an auction site is probably a better choice (especially for current/former HDX owners) in the limited high-end tablet segment. Good luck.

I currently have the 16gb Apollo Wifi only and yeah the battery is my problem now. The belzeless sides/top bottom depending on oreintation doesn't bother me since its going straight into a case thats larger then it anywas. I mainly use it for emulation/reading via Coolreader since I have 6gb of books. So yeah the sd slot is a must for roms/isos for emulation for me. Needs to be able to use a MOGA Pro Power bluetooth controller as well as my FiiO E18 which the HDX does NOT do. UI isn't a problem for me any way. So yeah another HDX isn't really going to cut it since it lacks the sd slot for me. So yeah the M5 handles all that easily.\
Yeah I use my MOGA Pro Power with Moonlight since my desktop has an nvidia 970 in it. So 2.4ghz only is NOT something I want/need. So yeah having both 2.4 and 5ghz is nice for that use. I know both the HDX and M5 support it which is a great featur on the HDX but its just lacking in features for my needs.

Nook Tablet vs Acer Iconia A100 (on BF)

Ok since Best Buy is going to have the Acer A100 7" tablet for sale on black friday for $189 (and its not an early bird special) I was wondering how this compares to the Nook Tablet (and to a lesser extent the Kindle Fire).
On paper the biggest differences are.....
Nook Tablet
Pros:
IPS screen
16gb memory
Battery Life
Cons:
Froyo
No Bluetooth, Cameras, or HDMI
Acer A100
Pros:
Honeycomb
Bluetooth, HDMI, Dual Cameras
$60 cheaper
Cons:
Battery life
Thickness
No IPS
Hard to tell. Looks like its a pretty standard tablet.
There isn't much development on rooting it, but you might need to do much since it has Honeycomb 3.2.
I also read that there is GPS. If it is a real GPS chip or just internet based location tracking.
BTW the Nook Color/Tablet has bluetooth chip...it just isn't available stock. Have to root.

Nook Tablet have not Froyo, but Gingerbread... I valutated the A100, but it have tooooo low battery life for me! Imho TI Omap4 is better than Tegra2 for a 7" tablet. I can live with my smartphone's camera and Gps
You've brought up a lot of good points. I already have my nook tablet on pre-order but of course I always second guess myself. Especially since nobody has really had a chance to play with it yet.
I don't really need the Camera or the HDMI. HDMI sounds nice but I'd much rather use a DLNA app and not use any wires. Bluetooth and GPS would also be nice but once again I don't think I would use the Bluetooth (keyboard, mouse, or stereo headset) but I think GPS would be kinda nice.
My biggest thing is I hope we can root it. To me that's a big part of the fun. I've read some of the reviews of the kindle fire and it sounds like folks are less than impressed but they won't come out and say it.
I did a little research on the differences between the Tegra 2 and the TI OMAP4 4430. And it sounds like if you want more video codec flexibility you go with a OMAP4 but if you want better battery life go with the Tegra 2 (since it has the Arm 7 core to handle all the housecleaning apps in order to save battery.)
I'm of course over simplifying but in a nutshell I think that's accurate.
The strangest part is that the Nook Tablet is running a OMAP4 processor and gets better battery life than the Iconia A100 running the Tegra 2. Go figure.

The Nook Tablet supposedly uses the same 4010 mAh capacity battery as the Color while the Iconia A100 has two 1530 mAh batteries for a total of 3060 mAh, i.e only about 75% of the battery capacity. Whether for cost, or weight or form factor, Acer simply skimped on the battery size. It's too bad given the rest of their specs and what it could have been

I got your 10 char right here
I could never buy a tablet with narrow viewing angles. It would drive me crazy.

The nook color...ok what about the nook tablet?

This deal sounds so tempting but i am very concern about battery life and screen quality (ie viewing angles)...I been spoiled by IPS tech in Nook color and my iphone...not sure how not having that will bother me or not. Also I enjoy not having to depend on always charging. 5 hours seems OK but sometimes even the 8hours of the nook would drain at a fast rate for me with heavy movie viewing.
I have $50 GC at Best Buy. So as long as I can buy it online and not have to fight the crowds I'm gonna get both. I'll give the Acer to the kids for christmas to beat on.
Acer will get official ICS update on Jan. Think acer is overall a better deal. 3000 mah is more than enough and im not fussy enough to NEED IPS screen.
Think of it like this. On a average day, would you need to spend more than 5 hours on your tab? if you do, you have issues imo
I'm trying to get confirmation that the $189 does not include the verizon $100 off Verizon Mobile Hotspot Deal.
I'm in the camp that its not baked into that price, however I'm in a heated debate in the Acer Iconia thread about this very issue. Check it out if your interested.
Decisions, Decisions.

I saw your other post regarding the heated debate in the A100 section. The $100 off tablet with Hotspot is a general deal in Best Buy for any tablet. It will take off additional $100 if you get them together, but otherwise $190 is the deal on Black Friday for A100 alone. Regular price is $330, so if the argument is $100 being baked in, that wouldn't make sense.
It's not a bad deal aside from the battery life, there's a price difference to make up for it. I'm still contemplating on whether I want one or get the Nook Tablet given how awesome my Nook Color have been.
One week to decide. Here's to hoping for easy root/hackability on Nook Tablet cause I just checked the Acer A100 dev section and it doesn't look promising.

But wouldn't pure ICS official update be enough for you? Acer confirmed it on January. I highly doubt other phones/tabs will get ICS that fast.
Why didnt you throw Lenovo Ideapad A1 in the mix, they were just on sale for $199. GPS, Bluetooth, Front/Rear facing cams, dual core processor, 16gb onboard.

Tired of waiting... Is the Nexus 10 still one of the best tablets to buy?

I keep seeing these great deals on the Nexus 10. Although it's an old tablet it is well received and still seems to be among the best available. After deciding to wait for the new version, it keeps getting pushed back and who knows when it will actually be available? I think I may just go with the original N10 as my Asus TF300 is absolutely driving me nuts. It's nearly unusable at times... if it's doing any kind of app update or sync, forget it, it's unusable. I am rooted and on a custom ROM and still have issues. I was fed up and need a replacement now. Should I stick with the N10 or maybe look into some other tablets... Budget is around $300...
Yeah its still a good tablet if you can get it for a decent price. I love mine, although it does have its flaws for sure. But if my tablet suddenly turned into a stack of $300 bills I am not sure I would buy it again. I would probably look at maybe a Sony Tablet Z.
The reason i say this is that the N10 is not a perfect device. For a start the battery is not the best. On 4.3 I would eek out 8 hours with very conservative use and low brightness. On 4.4 that has dropped to 6-7 hours on a very good day. The battery issue is mainly due to the chipsets used, which is a dual core A15 and Mali T604 graphics. Both of these are pretty power hungry compared to newer chipsets. Newer CPU's have lower powered cores which handle mundane tasks and conserve power. Also, the graphics use up 1GB of the system memory, so really you only get 1GB for system RAM and not 2GB like most tablets. Kitkat 4.4. had to be gimped on the N10 mainly due to the N10 not have enough grunt to run certain aspects of 4.4 like the translucent bars and ART without stutter. Another thing is its not a tablet to be held in portrait mode due to the design. It should be held in landscape mode at all times. It just feels way better held like that.
Don't get me wrong I love my N10, especially the design. Its definitely the best tablet in terms of ergonomics I have used. The screen is still fantastic and the speakers being on the front are really great and go to a decent level. Performance is also really good being vanilla android and all with no bloatware.
So I do love my N10 but its not perfect, but I can live with its faults. But if I was to buy another tablet tomorrow I would definitely look around at the competition.

Almost Everything Warren_Orange has said is true to certain degree. The screen is still fantastic compared to newer tablets even though it may not be #1 anymore in terms of quality. Yes, ram on the nexus 10 is a little scarce due to the high screen resolution but its not a deal breaker by any means. KitKat has vastly improved ram management on this device and it is a night and day difference. Battery life could certainly be better and don't even get me started on the insanely long charging times lol.
A few things I would kindly disagree with is that "the processor in the N10 doesn't have enough power for 4.4." I think the features missing from 4.4 on the N10 has more to due with fact that its using an exynos processor and not snapdragon or some other mainstream chip. Exynos chips tend to be more locked down with their drivers and less compatible than other popular chipsets. I haven't come across one app or game that my n10 couldn't run or struggled with. If anything it seems like Google hasn't totally optimized this tablet to its fullest potential on the software end. Also I think the N10 is fine held in portrait mode. It just feels little odd at first if you're not used to a 16:9 tablet.
Like Warren_Orange said, the N10 isn't prefect but its still a great tablet. One thing I would recommend if you decide to purchase it (and are comfortable with) is root it, install a ROM like SlimKat Official build 3 and over clock the CPU and GPU (overclocking the gpu will be the most beneficial to help cope with the screen resolution while overclocking the cpu is totally optional as it already has two powerful A15 cores) while at the same time undevolting. This helps tremendously with the overall performance of the device and other gripes associated with it.
Good luck with your decision! And if you get the chance, please post back and let us know what route you decide to take. We're more than happy to help with more questions that may arise.
Well I love my N10! The battery life isn't that bad. I can usually get close to 10 hours with apps that don't tax the gpu. The charging time does stink... 5 hours is too long. All in all, I've been enjoying mine since last May. Just buy an N7 for now to hold you over to the next 10 incher is released. Purchased one for my wife and she loves it.

I would definitely buy again, no questions asked.
I don't know what everyone else's problems with the battery life are, I get 1.5-2 days worth of use with mine including leaving it on all night unplugged. Even if the battery life is a "problem" for some, just plug it in each night anyhow and you're good to go.
The screen is phenominal on this thing, the front facing speakers are great as well. There's also plenty of developer activity, and a somewhat minimal amount of people having issues with their devices. The two biggest weak points that people seem to have in terms of having to return it are screen light leak, and the battery occasionally going from ~20% suddenly to 0%. Both of which, are fixed easily by Samsung via a return.
Outside that, I still really like mine, so I say buy one. Especially if you're going to be paying $200 less than what I paid for mine ($499?)
No complaints on battery life from me. The high-res display is what sells this thing, and as an added bonus it has front-facing speakers and is super lightweight. My only complaint is the finicky Wifi; depending where I am in the house, the Wifi becomes dog slow despite a strong signal.
If you can find a good deal on Nexus 10, then yes it's a worthy purchase.
I just got the Nexus 10 as a gift yesterday. So far I am liking it. I have had a rooted nexus 7 32gb first gen since it came out and I love that one. I am trying to decide whether to root the nexus 10 or not. I am sure that the other roms are better for battery life than stock.
Joe
Get a case with the magnet deal allowing it to sleep. Then set wireless to shut off when in sleep mode. This will help allot with battery life. I always charge mine when powered down (mostly overnight) that helps with charging speed some.
I have had the N10 awhile now, running ThunderKat 4.4.2 ROM and Kernel. No complaints here.

With PoGo charger it only takes 2 hours, they are really cheap too. Also charges while you use it as well.
I love this tablet. I'm starting to think some people have N10s that were shipped with lemon batteries or something, if I use it occasionally I can go 3-4 days before charging with about 6 hours screen on time. Today (NCAA tournament baby) I abused the tablet all day and still got over 18 hours with 7 hours of screen on time, and it's sitting here hovering around 15%. Virtually all of those 7 hours were with the brightness at about 50% streaming video. Having said that, I got mine in November 2012 and am pretty anal about charging habits. This IS my first tablet, so maybe I'm not expecting as much out of my battery as other users?
I don't think I'll be purchasing the 2014 Nexus 10 (if it ever arrives), the current gen is every thing I need from a tablet and more. I suppose there are now newer tablets with better specs, but would it affect the utility it provides me? I think not.
If you are a spec whore, don't get this tablet. If you are looking for a top notch tablet with decent development that is currently selling for a relatively cheap price tag, GET IT!

If you're still interested, there's a seller on ebay that is listing a brand new 32GB N10 for $300: http://slickdeals.net/permadeal/116766/ebay---32gb-samsung-nexus-10-10-android-tablet
I've had N10 for 4 months, it goes alongside my N4 of 14 months and N7 of 20 months.
I use my N7 on long haul flights for space and battery reasons, N10 in hotels and home, N7 when really moving around a lot like on a bike and when going between meetings as it fits in a trouser pocket. My N4's with me all the time.
The N10's battery life really sucks, battery charging is slow, BUT I just use it in proportion to my other devices and I got the Pogo cable, when its not moving around its connected to the Pogo cable, that keeps on top of demand and I've NEVER had flat battery turn off problems. When I'm in situations with high mobility and not expecting much plug-in time I'm using my N7 which lasts longer and charges faster. N10 does say a trans-continent 5 hour flight fine but say California to Europe it can't but a N7 can with possibly an external USB slim battery top-up.
The N10 and N7 bluetooth tethering seamless flawless reliable to the N4 so I got phone and tablet online all the time when on the go.
The N10 absolutely best features are it's display 1st, outstanding, and then its speakers being stereo and forward facing so you can actually sit on your laptop or on desk, etc and sit and watch it would headphones and its just a pleasure.
My N10 crashes in certain situations, so I simply avoid those situations. Its camera doesn't work reliably for say Skype... so I use my N7 or N4 for that.
Just so long as you don't have too high an expectations, don't expect perfection, and use it in contexts which fits its limitations, then for the <$300 figure use it and enjoy. If you limit its use to contexts it should last enough years and betya you can replace its battery with a guide in a couple of years to re-life it if you wanted.
You can spend as much $ buying 1 device which aims to be better but 2 or 3 devices are better, particular as if say you're watching Hulu on you N10 and when annoying commercials (who needs a car anyway) come on just pick up your N7 and check your email, so "multi-window" by other means.
Notice how my N7 is coming to 2 years and still used? Because the big-screen graphics stuff is on the N10 and the battery-hog situations avoid the N10 and go to N7. I think that's the way to go. The idea of one perfect tablet never happens, plus it sucks if it breaks and its all you got.
I got one of these dual USB chargers and the Pogo cable makes all the difference.
Good stuff guys, thanks for all the great info. I did decide to get one as there was a good deal last week. however the 32GB model for $300 is a great deal and if I knew it was coming I would have waited one more week. I received it yesterday and so far so good. Everything I expected so far except the stock email client's hyperlinks aren't clickable. I had to switch to another email client app. I will look into the pogo plug but I'm not sure if I really need it.
I'm still playing with it but the performance so far is as expected and far exceeds the TF300 it is replacing.

Maybe... The latest Emotion UI is already 3.0 and thy didn't give to this one with the Kitkat update. If they do make a lollipop update for this one, The new version of this phone might be out. For their old Phablet the Ascend Mate 2 they have the emotion UI 2 update but They are still waiting for the Kitkat update. If only they are as the other companies to update their software Huawei would be bigger outside of China.

That is why, I am afraid of buying Huawei phones.
I hope this X1 wont be stuck with 4.4.2 forever.
Other products like Sony n others, has a good firmware updates.

I do hope they do make the update. for their customers and for their company. also their phones doesn't have NFC w/c i really would like to have. Their phones look nice and have good specs and price. but if they don't follow up with the regular updates of android or their own UI it may cause old Huawei owners to upgrade and buy new Huawei.
IMHO, software versions generally don't impact what you are able to do with the device from day 1.
A Gingerbread device will still let you install apps, make calls, use the camera, upload/download stuff, browse the internet etc.
You bought this device because of the hardware and what the hardware does, not because of the software version. My Note 3 is still on 4.3 from day 1 (1 year ago) with root and Xposed, and I'm completely satisfied with it.

Actually, im still deciding what to buy so i did some research about the x1. if you don't mind me asking you sir. im stuck with the note 3 and this phone the x1. i know the note 3 would be future proof for about a year or two because of its high specs but i like the metal build, screen size and the fact that the x1 has no physical home button because i don't like it. also the price of the x1 here where i'm at is around 140orm and the note 3 has a discounted price of 200orm for the 32gb version. if you would pick one from the two, which would you rather have?

I have both. They serve different purposes.
The Note 3 for ease of portability and general browsing. The X1 is for media consumption and work email/VPN access to Microsoft Remote Desktop. That is why different screen sizes serve different purposes.
However, the X1 has better network reception than the Note3.

I too have both devices. I actually bought this one because I found the Note 3 screen a bit small for reading PDFs, browsing the web and watching videos. My initial intention was to sell the Note 3 but now I'm not so sure. My feelings on both phones, after a month with the MediaPad X1 and 9 month with the Note 3:
MediaPad X1:
+ The screen size is a joy to use with certain applications and to watch videos. It also allows me to use my thumbs to write on the keyboard in portrait mode. I type much faster this way.
+ Skin tones are rendered more naturally than on AMOLED screens.
+ Battery life. It lasts sooooo much longer than the Note 3.
+ Speaker. Very good sound quality.
- Size. This thing is HUGE. No, let me correct it: GIGANTIC is a more appropriate term. Its main advantage is also its main drawback. The only place it fits is on the back pocket of my jeans and it protrudes like 3-4 cm. Even coat pockets are small for this thing. It is also nearly impossible to answer call with only one hand.
- Poor screen uniformity and washed out blacks.
- Weight. It is noticeably heavier than the Note 3.
- Even tough it fits in my hand (barely), making long calls with it is uncomfortable.
- Support. Huawei's support is a joke and even here on XDA there is little support for this device. This device's user manual is pathetic. There are loads of functionalities that aren't addressed on the manual. The ROMs feel like a rush job with lots of rough edges.
- Only supports memory cards up to 32GB.
- Non removable battery
- No NFC
- On screen home buttons steal a lot of screen space
Note 3:
+ Still fits in my pockets.
+ Blacks are as deep as they get, the screen has perfect uniformity and AMOLED's oversaturated colors are great for games and apps.
+ Support, both from Samsung and here on XDA.
+ Better hardware, better stock ROMs and availability of custom ROMs (if you are into them, which I'm not).
+ Supports cards up to 128 GB
+ Removable battery
+ NFC
+ S-pen (not a deal breaker for me, but it is nice to have)
+ Physical home buttons mean that every single pixel of the screen is used at all times with all applications.
- The screen size is big for a phone but a bit small for certain applications. 6.3" would be a great compromise between the gigantic Mediapad X1 and the not so big Note 3. I owned the Mega 6.3 for a short period and it was just the right compromise. Shame Samgung discontinued it.
- Skin tones are oversaturated and unrealistic, even in Movie, Professional photo (LOL!) or any other display mode meant to desaturate the colors.
- Battery life is O.K. for its class but pales in comparison with the MediaPad X1.
- Better camera
Right now I still haven't decided which one I'll keep but I'll have to make a decision until next week. Whatever I decide, it will be a compromise. The day Samsung makes a Galaxy Note phablet with 6.3" screen and razor thin bezels, I'll have my perfect phone. Until then, I have to make a compromise.
Alexei,
The X1 is not gigantic. It is way smaller than the Nexus 7 and it DOES fit into my work pants front pockets. It even fits in the breast pocket of some of my shirts.
If you want to make long calls, for any phone, the best thing is to sit down compfortably and use a headset whether wired or bluetooth. I participate in hour-long conference calls often, and I have always used a headset. It's bad ergonomics if you don't.
SDcard support - definitely 64Gb is usable in FAT32 format, and I'm sure 128Gb in FAT32 is also usable. I am using a 64Gb card in my X1.
Color reproduction - I don't think you will be looking at a movie that has lots of black in it for most of the movie. Even if you were to be reading comics or black and white manga, most of the screen is white background anyway.
The onscreen buttons in 4.4.2 tend to autohide in media and game playback, so it's not an issue.
As for the rest, I do agree, but I'm not one that chanes devices often, so I'll definitely keep it till the next big thing comes along. *NOT* crapple of course.

When I meant "gigantic", I was making a comparison with phablet class devices. Of course that if you compare to 7" tablets, the X1 is actually much smaller than the competition. Being big or small will depend from user to user. I'm not a short person but I'm far from being tall or having big hands. My advice to any potential buyer is to try it and decide for themselves.

I agree. However, it would be something else to carry in my already filled pockets. At home I use a headset, but on the move I use it with any headset, wired or BT. Again, one should access your his typical uses of the phone.

I tried a 64 GB Sandisk Ultra card and the device didn't recognize it. When I inserted a 32 GB card, also a Sandisk Ultra, it was immediately recognized. Both where formatted in FAT32. Which card are you using? I would love to have 64 GB on my X1.

I tend to agree with you when you say that most of the times it will not be an issue. However, the difference does exist. My X1 has notorious light bleed around the edges. It is very noticeable with a uniform black screen background. Is my device faulty? How does yours behave?

Not in media and game playback but you have to hide them manually in all other applications, which I find annoying.
Cheers,
Alex
for 64GB card u can try format first to fat32 at yr PC using mini partition after that format again using yr x1.it work for me .
Update: I've finally made a decision. I'm keeping my Note 3 and selling my MediaPad X1. As much as I love the long battery life and the big screen, it is just no practical to use all day long as a phone. I could live with its other flaws but I'm tired of feeling something this heavy in my pocket, of its cumbersome use for calls and feeling like I'm carrying a small brick in my pants in general. It is a great device if this doesn't bother you.
I'm moving back to the Note 3 forums. To all you gentlemen who I've interacted with in this forum, my best regards.
Good for you. As amazing a device this is, it is not for everyone. I routinely flip between this and other smaller flagship phones but this phone always trumps for battery life and screen size. With a smart watch and headset it is manageable but sometimes I long for a normal 5" or so smartphone in my pocket. Cheers.

[Q] I need some help to decide which tablet to buy

Hello,
I have spent many hours in last week to find out which one of the new chinese tablets is a best solution, but I find some contradictory data so I need some assistance. At the moment I am using a 2yr old Ployer Momo 12. The problems with the device were short battery life (less then two days in sleep without use, 5-6 hrs of use with low light setting and web browsing/reading), dedicated power supply and a bit unprecise touch control. Lately as the apps get bigger I feel that it's time for a change. Because there is very little price difference between various devices I would like to buy the best that I can.
The SoC options are Mediatek 8392, Allwinner A80T, RK3288 and the Intel option. According to my research, Mediatek should be a better solution then Allwinner. As I understand, the Intel is the slowest solution of the bunch, but I find contradictory information about RK3288. One group says that RK is a bit worst then A80T and Mediatek a bit better then A80T. Other say that RK should be the best of all. Who shall I trust?
As of specific devices I have been looking on Cube Talk 9X U65GT, Pipo P1, Teclast P98 Air Mediatek, Teclast P98 Allwinner, Onda V989. For the Onda I have read that the build quality is not the best. I like that the Cube has Gorilla Glass, but the downside is the lack of HDMI and a proprietary charging connector. My judgement about the Pipo hengs on the answer to the last question, which SoC to chose. Teclast i do like very much, I like that it is not thin on the edges and thick in the middle, but has the same thickness all over and a aluminum casing that should help with heat dissipation and there is a USB 3.0. There are also the two SoC flavors at Teclast and that is also a choice that I am unable to make. And at last there is a question about the battery life, for many devices I have found the some review, except for the Teclast devices, so if you have some data I would appreciate it.
I want the device that would work nicely out of the box (without the custom rom's), I would like to have HDMI, Gorilla glass is not a must have, because it will be in a case most of the time, 3G is not needed as I can make a tethering connection with my phone if I really need a web connection when not in reach of WLAN. That should be it, what could be the final recommendation for my case?
I also want to change my Android tv box device. Current device is a MK809III stick. The main con's in current device are thermal problems and wifi problems, both have been solved by disassembling the box. As a new device I have chosen Beelink R89 Box with RJ45 eth connection and bigger case, also a few more USB ports. I have also been looking at SZTomato R89, but the Beelink seemed better, did I make the right choice?
Thank you all for taking time to help me,

You mention processors better than intel. I do not know if you are a fan of windows but do these processors support windows?
I have the Teclast x98 air 3g. I just ordered it from China. It has both android and windows 8.1. It can be used as a pc and has
hdmi/usb/bluetooth. I played a game from windows xp on it. It is similar to the onda but has a brighter screen and HDMI. You should get a
tablet with 2gb ram and maybe 64 gb like Teclast. Normal use is about 1.4 ram and 32 gb could be barely anything when you consider it
could really be like 29 minus OS. When you first get it is in chinese. You can change the language in the settings. The battery is supposed
to last 5 hours. I am guessing it will be a lot less if your watching a movie or playing an intense 3d game.

Is the Xperia Z4 tablet a good alternative to the Nexus 9?

I really loved the Nexus 9 in the couple months that I had it. Just couldn't stand the lightbleed. Build quality was acceptable but not great.
Now I'm looking for another tablet of comparable specs (9" or bigger with similar performance).
It seems that the Z4 tablet would fit the bill. It has more screen real estate (10.1"), widescreen, better build, expandable storage, similar power (snapdragon 810), more ram, lighter, water resistant, better camera *probably* and *hopefully* a better screen. Xperia devices tend to have consistently good screens, so I don't expect any glaring quality issues in this department. Plus it already has Lollipop. Only obvious drawbacks are side facing speakers, the fact that it is not quite bone-stock Android, somewhat smaller battery, and that it will most likely cost 100-200 more than the Nexus 9 32gb.
Do you guys think its a good alternative?
Do i think a high end tablet that comes out about 4-6 months after the N9 be a good alternative? Yes.
Obviously if you had to buy it today it loses as you can't buy it today. But from what I see the Z4 will be a nice device. just comes down to your needs and when you need it. Don't think it will be that much more expensive (unless it has LTE)

It's just that large-sized premium Android tablets seem to be so far and few between these days. It seems that the Nexus 9 and Galaxy Tab S are the only ones that fit this category, so a tablet like the Z4 is much needed. Another other upcoming tablets to consider?
True. Too bad we can't get our hands on the Nokia Tablet. Outside of that there aren't any highly anticipated tablets that are around the corner. Z4 is the leader, and if they are making one, whatever shield tablet comes next.

I've looked at the Nokia Tablet, but like the Shield Tablet, its a bit too small for my type of usage (under 9"). My primary use is comic book reading, games and web surfing. I would love to see Motorola make a new full-sized tablet. It would be the next best thing to a Nexus with its fast Android updates.
