Hello,
I have spent many hours in last week to find out which one of the new chinese tablets is a best solution, but I find some contradictory data so I need some assistance. At the moment I am using a 2yr old Ployer Momo 12. The problems with the device were short battery life (less then two days in sleep without use, 5-6 hrs of use with low light setting and web browsing/reading), dedicated power supply and a bit unprecise touch control. Lately as the apps get bigger I feel that it's time for a change. Because there is very little price difference between various devices I would like to buy the best that I can.
The SoC options are Mediatek 8392, Allwinner A80T, RK3288 and the Intel option. According to my research, Mediatek should be a better solution then Allwinner. As I understand, the Intel is the slowest solution of the bunch, but I find contradictory information about RK3288. One group says that RK is a bit worst then A80T and Mediatek a bit better then A80T. Other say that RK should be the best of all. Who shall I trust?
As of specific devices I have been looking on Cube Talk 9X U65GT, Pipo P1, Teclast P98 Air Mediatek, Teclast P98 Allwinner, Onda V989. For the Onda I have read that the build quality is not the best. I like that the Cube has Gorilla Glass, but the downside is the lack of HDMI and a proprietary charging connector. My judgement about the Pipo hengs on the answer to the last question, which SoC to chose. Teclast i do like very much, I like that it is not thin on the edges and thick in the middle, but has the same thickness all over and a aluminum casing that should help with heat dissipation and there is a USB 3.0. There are also the two SoC flavors at Teclast and that is also a choice that I am unable to make. And at last there is a question about the battery life, for many devices I have found the some review, except for the Teclast devices, so if you have some data I would appreciate it.
I want the device that would work nicely out of the box (without the custom rom's), I would like to have HDMI, Gorilla glass is not a must have, because it will be in a case most of the time, 3G is not needed as I can make a tethering connection with my phone if I really need a web connection when not in reach of WLAN. That should be it, what could be the final recommendation for my case?
I also want to change my Android tv box device. Current device is a MK809III stick. The main con's in current device are thermal problems and wifi problems, both have been solved by disassembling the box. As a new device I have chosen Beelink R89 Box with RJ45 eth connection and bigger case, also a few more USB ports. I have also been looking at SZTomato R89, but the Beelink seemed better, did I make the right choice?
Thank you all for taking time to help me,

You mention processors better than intel. I do not know if you are a fan of windows but do these processors support windows?
I have the Teclast x98 air 3g. I just ordered it from China. It has both android and windows 8.1. It can be used as a pc and has
hdmi/usb/bluetooth. I played a game from windows xp on it. It is similar to the onda but has a brighter screen and HDMI. You should get a
tablet with 2gb ram and maybe 64 gb like Teclast. Normal use is about 1.4 ram and 32 gb could be barely anything when you consider it
could really be like 29 minus OS. When you first get it is in chinese. You can change the language in the settings. The battery is supposed
to last 5 hours. I am guessing it will be a lot less if your watching a movie or playing an intense 3d game.

Other than HDMI, listed specs look the same as GTablet.
This looks interesting, but they don't state what the CPU is.
I noticed that for the gTablet beneath it, they show Dual Core and so on. This one simply says 1GHz. I'm curious about this tablet too.
on the viewsonic site its listed as a Intel Pine Trail N455 1.66ghz cpu
I think that's a single core.

The N4XX line is in fact single core. And as a point of reference, the Snapdragon processor uses only 1/4 of the power consumption of the Atom, so I would expect battery life to be significantly less with heavy usage.
It is funny that many people whom are buying the G-tablet from Sears are thinking they are getting the Viewpad 10S. Now are we going to see people buying the G-tablet end up getting a Viewpad 10S in their hands.
Viewpad 10 & 10s
http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/11/viewsonic-viewpad-10-and-10s-hands-on/
Looks like the 10s is gtab V2
Almost identical specs..... hmmmm better screen? :-D
Interesting enough this 10s says Russia, Europe and Asia only...look like we might be able to source some upgraded parts.
I think one of the features we missed was the optional 3G. That seems like a bonus, and maybe then we'd be able to use the location feature.
Also, what is this "G-Sensor"? Would this add an extra axis, such as an accelerometer? Ive noticed playing some games, such as doodle jump, that there is no accelerometer when you're holding it portrait tilting it side to side. Does anyone know what the g-sensor is?
10s looks better than the gtab, I like that they move the main screen a little bit toward to the bottom boarder, and there are no physical buttons (ready for honeycomb), the back looks much better without the "G-tablet" logo and it looks a little bit thinner too. The interesting thing is that the software is not TNT, it looks more like the Vegan or Advent Vega don't you think?
Anyways, cannot tell whether the screen is a better one since when I hold my gtablet the same way, my screen looks very good too.. (just the viewing angle sucks).
EDIT: just looked at the first generation of Advent Vega tablet, it is virtual the same as 10s.. just the shell looks a little bit different. Man, it looks like another rebrand..

The 10S has a Tegra 2, same as the G-tab.
Not sure of any specific advantages other than HDMI. It would nice if it drove the price of used G-tabs down.
10S looks like it has about the same specs as the g. The 10S back looks sooo sooo much more like a real product and not some import knock off. I hope the screen size is the same but with better viewing angles...maybe it means g will finally find a decent panel replacment. Also sounds like VS is not bailing on the tablet market and with the two slates being so close in specs I cannot imagine not seeing Android 3.0 roms for the gTablet. If the 10s screen is much better I might just pick one up and give my parents my old g but I have a feeling it is a mediocre step up if any.
10S has a 512 Mb NAND, but G-tablet 16 gigabytes
People seem to be micing up the dual-booting, atom based, 10 and the 10s, which is an Android device almost identical the gtablet.
From engadget's hands-on of the 10s.
"The 10's sister, the 10s (also a 10.1-inch slate), is launching later this month. However, this tablet is running a skinned version of Android 2.2 on Tegra 2. On the top of the device you'll find the power button, orientation lock and back button. Don't ask us why the back button is up there -- we're just as puzzled as you are. On the right side, you'll find a hinged door hiding an HDMI, USB 2.0 and Micro SD slot. Don't worry, there's a 3.5mm headphone port and volume rocker so you can awkwardly rock out connected to the giant gadget piece. The 10s is only launching in Europe, Asia and Russia and is said to cost a rounded 430 smackaroos."
So this begs the question....do I hold out for the 10s North American version or just get the gtablet. I've read reviews that say the 10s screen has the same viewing angle issues as the g tablet. I'm thinking the g tablet will go on sale here pretty soon too.
Actually after max 7 days i will be owner of Viewsonic Viewpad 10s. Then i can make "hands on" review. And this is not yet all folks. I go open this animal to pieces. And this is not yet all folks. I make photos and guides how to do that to not broken your if you get it.
yeah, the screen, if it is bette,r is an advantage, but it looks the same. HDMI i can live without. It is a portable electronic is it not or are we going to start carrying our 55 inch dlp tvs with an extension cord in a backpack. I'm sure targus would be happy. But my main concern on top of the screen of course would be battery. Once again, it is suppose to be portable? and according to the specs 4 hour batt life is nothing to get thrilled about. just my 2 cents.

4 hours?? Are you sure that's not for the dual-boot one? The 10s is the same hardware (speculating about the screen) than the gtablet.
I went and played with the gtablet today in store and was not impressed. The build quality seems pretty good, but the screen viewing angles were pretty crappy. They bolt down the thing at a certain angle for a reason on display it seems. Although, I'd love a chance to play with a VEGAN version. The stock software killed my experience, and I'm sure 99% of the other shoppers.
i did a little searching before i bought the g tab, and saw there are custom roms available. so on the way to the store to pick it up i downloaded the rom on my phone bought the tab and flashed right away. i have no idea what the original rom issues are, since the only time i messed with it was the 10 mins at the depot. gotta say though...love the tab...but needs a better screen. even my lenovo s10 has a better screen.

Hello All,
I'm reading this part of forum since a while and I know different pros and cons
of Folio 100, which can be solved mostly by custom rom installation.
But since now I'm finally wondering whether to buy this device or not,
I would like to ask you about quality of it's screen.
I've heard a lot of Folio 100 screen bad angles and it's general
poor quality image, but in the other hand I've heard that this screen is the
same like in the Archos 101 Tablet (which could be my other choice).
And since you all are already using this device, I would like to
know what is your personal opinion and is it really so bad?
Besides all other specs of Folio 100 (maybe not the weight
make it quite worth spending ~540$ for it.
Regards,
headblow
Hi,
Build quality is not so great, and probably you will have some problems... but for the price is kind of good deal... check for gaps on the screen, around the edges.
The screen is bright enought and constrast is fair. The only thing is not so good is viewing angle, but still if you use it for personal use (not to share with other) is quite enough.
I also thought about the archos 101... but when you look at the hw specs (512 MB ram instead of 256, Dual core cpu vs singel core cpu)... the folio wins imo, the image quality and view angles could be better, but for my use (mostly internet (nice flash performance), working with documents, vpn, rdp and ssh connections, (video) conferencing, watching quick video's, music) it's great...
and the build quality, to me it doesn't feel cheap, it's a good deal for the price...
Software is not really an issue, it's fully functional with some little issues when you use FolioMod 1.4...
I still haven't had the chance to get my hands on an archos 101, but I heard that you can feel the screen "bump in" when you press it? something the folio doesn't have, it's just a solid surface which is very sensitive... Also I heard the edges aren't that nice when holding it, the folio had nice rounded edges... Like I said, this is from what I've heard...
I have been using the Folio for about a week now, and both the view angle and the build quality are good. I have no problems when reading a pdf or playing a game.
Screen for personal use is still quite ok. For reading it is fine, but when I read in dark room with black backround(portrait orientation) it starts to reflect a bit, which I do not like.
Overall this is a good PERSONAL device. Also found one German review where Folio screen was marked as having better quality than the one on Archos 101 IT
Considering slower cpu and less ram - archos is losing here
However build quality may still be a question.
Thanks guys for all infos, they help me what decide.
And now Im new Folio 100 user, but unfortunately Ive already found two bugs (Im using Folio Mod 1.4) which Ive read about in other posts:
- folio is waking up from standby,
- device hangs up frequently during normal use,
Besides above its quite nice device, even screen is ok for me

headblow

You must be joking, right?
Build quality is poor. If you play close attention you will see that most of the screws are loose and you have a 1-2 mm gap on the right low corner of the screen glass... this will make very easy to break the glass when pressing
If you consider that most of the countries don't have local repair centers, this means that will have to wait several months to have it fixed.
I recommend everyone to check for defects before buying. Specs wise folio is certain a good deal, but you should pay attention to this details...
In my case screen, especially the gap between glass and plastic is the same in each part of screen, and when I slide my finger gently I feel that glass part is a litttle bit lower than plastic part - each place same.
I've paid attention to this when I was buying my device.
But again it has only few days and I hope it want change within time.
Regarding my previous information about wakes & hangs up, it seems I've partial solution. I've installed REGPON wifi KeepAlive app from market - which keeps wifi alive in standby mode and it looks like now everything is fine (expect a bit shorter battery life).
I've read that this can be solution in someone other post, so it's not my idea.

Hello everyone,
I'm a potential new customer for the Transformer Prime. I have a 64GB on order from Amazon, with an estimated ship date of Feb 7th. I guess that will give me time to see everything announced at CES before laying my money down.
I have a few questions I have not seen covered in any review:
1) I know that the Prime can play High Profile 1080P MKVs, but I have yet to confirm if it can play 10 bit MKV encodes (Hi10p). I'm an anime and foreign film fan, and much of the content I download is quickly moving over to this format.
2) Is there a possibility that over time the docking mechanism can scratch the Prime where it clamps onto the tablet? I pride myself on keeping my equipment in excellent condition, so I'm wondering if docking will eventually lead to scratches on the device.
3) Is there a possibility that Windows 8 can be added to the device when released?
Supposedly Win8 requires significantly less resources than 7:
-1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
-1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)
-16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
-DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver
Thank you for any answers you can provide!
to answer your questions:
2) They mesh pretty well together. one is built perfectly for the other. I wouldn't think it would get scratched up unless you slamming the tablet screen shut or something. might even be little rubber stoppers or something to cushion the screen against the dock when closed. not exactly sure though.
3) Asus is actually supposed to bring out a windows 8 tegra3 version later this year or so. once its released developers here will more than likely be able to port it over to the current Prime and be able to dual boot or something similar.
About the anime, I was wondering the same thing.
Sadly, there's a very high chance it doesn't have 10bit support. The new codec used for that is still being developed, and most PC programs for media are still in beta for supporting it, or don't have it at all.
Sent from Silent Earth 3
Sorry I can't answer you question regarding video formats, I am just exploring this area myself, and the Windows 8 question I suppose depends on ARM Support, which I haven't followed to much. I did want to clarify somethings, as I keep my equipment spotlessly perfect as well.
The docking mechanism has felt padding on both sides, the TF101 I had used almost identical setup and assuming you don't let this get damaged or pulled away, you should be fine. Some people with covers for the back like the Skinomi Carbon cover say it's too tight, and is causing issues, those covers are designed for standalone tablets without the dock.
I have narrowed my choices to these two tablets and i am about to pull the trigger ...so is anyone familar with the acer model and are you fully satified with your Stablet....Any feedback will be greatly appreciated!!
I didnt like the acer, it was laggy and thought the sony hsd more functionality. I made no regrets buying the sony.

Sony all the way. If you have a local Sony store ask them to give you the employee price They are usually pretty cool about it and can save you some $$$
memory
I fell in love with the Sony the moment I played with it. I will approach this more from the Sony side as I did not focus on the ACER to much.
Pros and Cons-
Pro's-
1- The form is amazing. I just love it.
2- Great capacity. 16GB on the Sony versus 8GB on the ACER. If you plan on loading up your tablet this is important.
Cons -
1- Weird charger. The charger is unique to Sony and there is no car charger.
2- Very few accessories. Being a bit unique, there are only a few specific accessories and generic accessories don't always fit.
cnet just reviewed the acer tab. based on that i would go sony all the way. pretty happy with mine and the universal remote is pretty damn awesome.ics is coming in the spring. downside is i am having issues right now with streaming Bluetooth audio while on WiFi and i am trying to do that because the built in speakers are weak. otherwise very solid, great screen, good camera's (2 vers1 on the acer) and wireless ps3 controller support built right in
my 2 cents
Sony for sure, I have no confidence in Acer quality after my bad experience with my Acer desktop
Another vote for the Sony here. I absolutely love mine.
They are quite different of course; The Sony is a more premium tablet with the form factor and the smooth responsiveness to match it. The Iconia relies on its lower price, since its relatively heavy, its screen has nothing like the flexibility of the Sony's TruBlack (or whatever its called). On the other hand, the Acer has the full-size USB port and more conventional form factor that many like.
Overall, I would recommend the Sony to absolutely anyone considering it. The only drawback I've found so far (though I know many others have found some buggy bits that should be cleaned up in time for ICS) is that there is no hardware display out. Of course, the Acer also does without the ubiquitous mini-HDMI so thats obviously not an issue.
Go with Sony
I would definitely go with Sony, I had an acer A500 which wasnt a bad device but its pretty large in comparison to the sony. The Sony is definitely more portable lighter and had an ergonomic design. The only thing sony lacks is HDMI output but that wasn't an issue for me. If there aren't any DLNA Devices available the amazing screen resolution suffices. Great for presenting my work to clients without lugging a laptop around.
post this question in NON - SONY section to get better views
thanks for the input.. I went with a s tablet...and I like it so far....i posted on this forum to get feedback from you that have this tablet...so I knew in advance it would be a little one sided

If you know of a way to use the USB port, please tell us, share a link to them.
The impression is, (without opening up my tablet), that the USB port does not connect to the power. I would love to be wrong!!
As to the IR remote, it is a nice feature, but I personally don't need it. All of my home theater devices are Samsung and the remotes work with each other.
Acer v/s Sony :: Obviously SONY hahahaha......

No, it is not possible to use USB as a charger, but I am talking about the general 3-pins only.
It is technically not possible to use the USB as a charger for the tablet.
For more you can refer the following post " http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1497511 "
To confirm what coolfire's saying, USB charging would require some very specific hardware designs and even then it would be tricky. The Sony doesn't include this capability, mostly since it uses a 10v battery, double the USB standard 5v.
On that note, I would check very carefully if you're looking at other tablets which claim to charge from USB as many tablets wont and many will emulate the behaviour first shown by the iPad. Those devices won't charge from USB but won't discharge either, effectively running the device on the 5v provided by the USB connector.

I just returned a a200 cause I bricked it, but figured I'd upgrade and get this Sony.had it two weeks, well having used both I can tell you I prefer the acer. it feels better looks better is not as laggy has a better OS, also has full size USB, acer also gets ICS and the ps3 controller works without a 30.00 cable from Sony. only thing better about the Sony is the awesome universal Remote. did I mention the acer is 50.00 cheaper? this tablet S will be going back so I can get another a200.
My Kindle Fire HDX 8.9" from 2013 is having MAJOR battery issues in that when it drops to 30 or below the battery percentage will just drop to nothing and the device will turn itself off until charged again. So if anyone knows of a good replacement battery on amazon that would be good otherwise I will be replacing the thing with a Huawei MediaPad M5 8.4" which has a 8.4" 2560x1600 IPS Panel a msd slot as well as supporting OTG and running Android 8 by default which means I will be able to run newer apps that require Android 5+ since my HDX is still running 4.4.2 or so. Also has both 2.4ghz and 5ghz bands for wifi so I can use both my MOGA Pro Power for emulators and things like Moonlight while still having great wifi performance. So yeah its taken forever for a decent replacement for the Kindle Fire HDX to come out since you are skimping on one thing or another with the newer HD tablets that have replaced the HDX. Yeah it sucks that Amazon has basically killed the cheap but powerful HDX line for weaker specs all around. The Mediapad m5 will also support my FiiO E18 DAC/Amp for my Audio Technica ATH-m50x unlike the HDX which lacks OTG.

Quality replacement batteries are hard to find and more difficult to install due to copious use of glue during assembly. Good chance you'll crack the screen or damage other components while attempting to crack open the HDX case... assuming you can find a replacement battery that has not been sitting on the shelf (or extracted from a dead unit) for 4+ years.
Consider a permanent tether to an external battery of modest size/weight as an alternative. Works for some an a lot less expensive.
Unlocked HDX devices can run fully featured, stable Android 7 based ROMs. All HDX devices also support 2.4/5 GHz WiFi regardless of ROM. Obviously no external storage or SD card slot. Bluetooth remains problematic on non-KitKat based ROMs. MediaPad M5 is in a different league on various dimensions. I don't see a direct comparison between the two. Good luck on whatever path you choose.

Since the generic case I use with my tablets fits a range of sizes the different deminsions of the M5 aren't really a problem for me. Yeah I may be losing half an inch in screen size but thats not a problem for me. And as for the battery like I said trying to get a great new one is nearly impossible so yeah I am aware of that hence trying to find a replacement tablet and since android tablets aren't being created much any more particularly with specs I am personally looking for its been nearly impossible to find one for years. This is honestly the closest I have gotten yet.

M5 caters to a narrow audience. If the specs, capabilities/limitations and price point meets your needs it may well be an ideal solution. For many a gently enjoyed HDX from an auction site is probably a better choice (especially for current/former HDX owners) in the limited high-end tablet segment. Good luck.
I currently have the 16gb Apollo Wifi only and yeah the battery is my problem now. The belzeless sides/top bottom depending on oreintation doesn't bother me since its going straight into a case thats larger then it anywas. I mainly use it for emulation/reading via Coolreader since I have 6gb of books. So yeah the sd slot is a must for roms/isos for emulation for me. Needs to be able to use a MOGA Pro Power bluetooth controller as well as my FiiO E18 which the HDX does NOT do. UI isn't a problem for me any way. So yeah another HDX isn't really going to cut it since it lacks the sd slot for me. So yeah the M5 handles all that easily.\
Yeah I use my MOGA Pro Power with Moonlight since my desktop has an nvidia 970 in it. So 2.4ghz only is NOT something I want/need. So yeah having both 2.4 and 5ghz is nice for that use. I know both the HDX and M5 support it which is a great featur on the HDX but its just lacking in features for my needs.
