Has anyone had the update delivered OTA?
Has anyone installed the update manually?
Does anyone know if the new system interferes with the use of a bootable SD-card?
I run Succulent's CM11 from a bootable SD-card. When I got the e-mail from Barnes & Noble about this vital update, I went out of my way to boot the stock ROM to let it update. (I hoped the change to TLS 1.2 would allow the stock browser to access sites, like this one, that refuse to allow a less secure connection.) It's been a week. I haven't left the Nook absolutely untouched for 24 hours like they say I need to. I have not been updated. (At least, my version number has not changed from 1.4.3, and I can't access this site.)
Further, I haven't been able to use the Barnes & Noble web site for some time. When I get to a place with a LOGIN button, pushing it gives me a white pop-up with a spinning (lack of) progress indicator which never resolves. If I go to the Apps "page" of the Nook and click on "Check for updates", I get "We're sorry, there's something wrong: unexpected exception executing command". I suspect Barnes & Noble screwed up their server in a way that makes it impossible for my tablet to contact them.
I'm curious whether anyone has seen the update successfully delivered OTA. I'd also like to know if anyone can say one way or the other whether manually updating will disable the flexibility that allows booting from an SD-card.
I doubt that the update would interfere with your SD-based ROM (BTW, kudos on making the card; I could not untangle those confusing directions when I tried to help someone do that once....). Based on the update for the Nook Simple Touch, the "only" changes have to do with contact with B&N servers so you can continue to spend money (securely) at B&N. I hedge on that because after the update there were a few old apps (what else for the NST?!) that would not install. Seems there was an issue with the types of signatures. I got an app to resign the few oddballs and then they installed and worked fine.
I think your hopes for better stock browser functionality are slim-to-none. And old browser is an old browser and has its own security protocols built in. I could be wrong but based on my experience with the NST, "newer" browsers have far fewer of the page loading/security notice problems, whereas "older" browsers are awash in error messages--all with the same stock version.
I didn't go after the 1.4.4 update for my NTs for these reasons. They run emmc ROMs in any case, and all the security features depend on those ROMs, not the obliterated stock.
I gave up on ever getting the update OTA. I copied nooktablet_1_4_4_update.zip to the "root" of the Nook (i.e., to the root of what's presented to a PC), "ejected" the Nook from the PC, and several minutes later had an updated Nook: It now shows Software version 1.4.4 on the About page under Settings.
As you predicted, I still can't connect to xda-developers.com, or to the link provided in the e-mail from Barnes & Noble. I *can* connect to the Help link on www.bn.com, which I'm pretty sure I couldn't do before the update. I still don't get anywhere trying to log in to Barnes & Noble (white pop-up shows an ever-spinning progress icon). I still get "exception executing command" when I try to "Check for updates" from the Apps page.
It still boots from the SD-card, so, all in all, I'm no worse off than I started.
Thanks for taking the time to respond. If you're handing out kudos, they should go to Succulent, Digimax, and Fattire.

So i rooted my wife's tablet when 1.4.0 was on it. everything was working great....until 1.4.1 was pushed. The android market app, android email app and android clock app no longer open. Ive been searching for a solution and i think i may have found one without having to revert back to 1.4.0 and start all over again. If i understand this correctly, all i need to do is this:
Sideload the ADB root hijack.apk file
Follow the Indirect's ADB Root Hijack APP, Allows Root PATCH and Reentry of Root Script video
And i think thats it. Am i missing a step? Also, for what its worth, When i try running the new NThidden app and try to run the unknown sources script, i get a force close everytime. Does this mean that something isnt right with my root? Sorry if im not making some sense...pretty new to this rooting stuff. Thanks in advance.
Honestly, as someone who half knows what I am talking about, I think your best bet is to back everything up, factory reset, and then use the latest and greatest auto root program. This will have the addecd benifit of you never have to worry about it auto updating again!
Everything I have read says 1.4.1 was put in place by people who hate you and want you to be poor. =p

It's not that they want you to be poor; they just want the money that you have to be theirs. They wouldn't begrudge you new money -- as long as you spend it on their services.
This is just me but I would factory reset and follow indirects method with alberts youtube vids..I know people have 1.4.1 going but Im sticking with 1.4.0 until I really need to update. Then watch alberts vids on how to block Over The Air updates and then you wont have to worry bout her tablet getting a forced update.
I'm having the same problem as GMcD.
AFAIK, I used the latest root script that should have blocked the OTA updates. Before I restore to factory and try rooting again, can anyone suggest how I can make sure that the OTAs are disabled again?
Is there any way to verify that the OTA updates have been disabled?
Thanks in advance!
PS much thanks to Indirect and Albert! Great work guys!
go to your settings then device info--> about your NOOK--> Software version should be 9.9.9 if not then it's not blocking OTA's
Frustrated...
Okay, I must be missing something and have hit the point of total frustration I have, I think, a fair amount of experience with rooting (DroidX, GalaxyS, GX2, Axtrix2 and NookColor with NF and HL+ running before they were allowed) so can only guess it's something silly or simple I am overlooking...
I bought my (3) kids NTs for Christmas since I own a fully rooted NC and saw the potential of the device for the price AFTER it was rooted. After they opened and registered them, I jumped online, D/L'd Indirect's scripts (YOU ROCK DUDE!) and had them rooted and on their way in an hour. 5 days later, the stupid 1.4.1 update hits (I was one of those who thought the root alone blocked the OTA) and jacked up all 3 devices.
I have tried EVERY post, hint and tip I can find here to get 1.4.0 back on these devices without success. Things I done:
- Factory reset MULTIPLE times (turning on wifi ONLY long enough to get past the registration screen)
- Downloaded the acclaim_update.zip file multiple times from multiple sites (latest one yesterday afternoon from Indirect's post). I have left it zipped, not changed the name and put it on the root partition of the card.
- Tried 3 different SD cards (all 2GB and have been used for rooting all my other devices without any issues), formatted from the PC and formatted from the NT
No matter what I seem to do, I can't get back to base 1.4.0. FR reverts back to stock 1.4.1 after reset and when I try to boot to the SD cards, the screen flashes a second like it's going to then just errors out saying try again or contact support. I "think" I have followed every post or trick to the letter, but can't get anywhere...
Anyone else seeing this problem or do I just have three jacked up tablets? Am I missing something?
I had just gotten mine rooted (using Indirect method), when I got hit with the update. Luckily I had a titanium backup. Here's what I did:
Restored 1.40 with sd card (did not even move my data, just copied the card to computer just in case it got wiped)
Rooted using updated Indirect method (smoother and easier than 1st time and set version to 9.9.9.
Then restored apps & data from backup (still on sd card)
Only trouble I had was with the drivers (I had to load a program to delete the drivers-don't recall the name but it's in Indirect's troubleshooting drivers thread)
Whole process was a pain but still only took a couple of hours.
Mike
I forgot one step in between the restoring and the rooting:
When I restored to 1.40 my n button wouldn't work so I had to erase and deregister the device (in settings under device info)
Then when I was able to connect I had to register again (no big deal)
Good luck,
Mike

I am having the same issue. I have tried to dl, re-dl everything possible to get mine to go to a 1.4.0. i just received mine as a gift and tbh i dislike how you have to purchase every little thing on it. SOOOOOOO what can I do to get it to a 1.4.0. I can follow instuctions and just need to warm up on this new technology hehe.. Oh another thing, as im going by albert wertz video, i cant help but to notice that his NT starts at 9.9.9? If I can get mine to go to a 9.9.9 and then restarting from there, I can do that as well. PLZ HELP
my question is, TiBu needs root. Now mine becomes 1.4.1 and TiBu is not working. How can I back up my stuff before reverting it back to 1.4.0?
Unfortunately, you can't. I bit the bullet today and did the 1.4.0 restore, re-root and OTA block. I've had to re-download all my apps and lost any saved game data but it is worth it to me.
I had restored my son's NT and realized how much nicer it is to have a rooted device that didn't require adb commands for installing apps. The entire process took me about 45 minutes with about a third of the time waiting for large app downloads (Madden 12).
Ok so here is the deal. I successfully did the zergrush script (did not know about the 1 click root apk). Either way that was successful, I had installed the market, a lot of google apps and gave it back to the person. Then they decided to install the amazon app store and chose app installer instead of package installer. That messed up apk installations for everything it seemed. During the zerg rush script, it gave me the option to make the "n" button a dedicated home key button, and so I had done that. After I did a factory restore, it remained the homekey button, and now I cannot find the browser or anything, I don't know how to bring up the browser what so ever. I can seemingly access everything else in the 1.4.0 install that it gives me. Unfortunately adb is not working, I can't seem to get the <!>Nook Tablet in the device manager anymore, no matter how many times I try to force and remove the default USB Mass Storage it installs.
Basically i seemed to have screwed myself. Using various search results in both the android development thread and this thread didn't seem to yield results for anyone else dealing with this issue. If anyone can lend me a hand or point me in the right direction, or even show me a thread that someone is dealing with this issue also, that would be fantastic. Thanks community!
Also, I used the script that doesn't allow OTA updates, so it seems the sdcard load acclaim_update.zip doesn't work either.
Well... I have successfully been able to force the 1.4.1 update back onto the device, which has given me "n" menu access. Now I will reattempt to revert back to 1.4.0 and root again.
My error was that I was putting the 1.4.1 update onto the sdcard instead of onto the nook partition.
I just noticed that a new update to version 1.4.2 started rolling out Monday, February 20, 2012. All those with a rooted 1.4.1 NT that weren't blocking updates because "there isn't an update available now anyway" may want to look into it now.
I haven't heard any details concerning what this update fixes or adds but, if recent history is any indication, it very well may break your rooting and/or side-loading apps and who knows how long it may take our resident geniuses on here to come up with a work-around.
Be forewarned everyone.
- Byron
It would be great to hear from somebody, if new Nook Tablets (16GB) are coming already with this version and if they can be rooted and reinstalled to CM7
Anyone wanting to can download it here.
The page notes "The NOOK Tablet Ver1.4.2 update provides minor system enhancements."
Edit: Also, BN_AlexG (admin at the B&N forums) said he will post the changes soon (post made 5 hours ago). Dean_Gibson also posted the changed files in the thread I linked.
Easy rooting
There should be no concerns about rooting. I was unable to upgrade from 1.4.1 rooted (w/Market, etc) to 1.4.2 (the B&N update detects an error and does not continue), but reverting to 1.4.0 stock (erase+deregister+reregister) and then applying my rooting procedure from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1413734 to root and update directly to 1.4.2 and reroot, worked. Since that is more sensitive to B&N changes than most rooting methods, other rooting methods should work as well.
I dont think the root block on the new 8gb nook tablets running 1.4.2 is what actually blocks rooting. I think the new wave of tablets have some changes beyond the rom that actually controls the boot sequence and prevents rooting from SD card. Not sure though... My newest video shows that no current root methods work on the 1.4.2 8 gb nook tablets and I dont think it will be long until they apply the same changes to the next wave of manufactured 16gb tablets.
Yes, it got me just a minute ago. Disabled Android Marketplace
Yes, 1.4.2 breaks things. Android Marketplace is now disabled on my Nook Tablet With SD card boot.
It pops up:
You must add an account to the device to continue. Do you want to add one now?
But clicking either button returns to the home screen
Other features seem to be working.

I'm going to assume you didn't have updates blocked via indirect's method or some other method, yes?
Or did you intentionally update to see if the updates would break stuff?
Slapped with 1.4.2 OTA, what are my options?

I rooted my NT two days ago using Albert's SD card method (thanks!), and thought I had for sure used NT Hidden Settings to block OTA. This morning I saw that the update had been applied, and a few things on my NT are now broken.
Now I cannot access the market. I get the same error as sherwingws.
Other gapps are broken now too including Talk, Currents, and gmail.
Can I just repeat the SD root process? Or do I need to make other changes before I attempt that. What are my options at this point?
Thanks everyone!
Also wanting to confirm that 1.4.2 breaks root. Rooted my NT two weeks ago using Indirect's sd card method and could have sworn that I blocked OTA updates, but about an hour ago got the update anyway and any programs requiring root won't run. This includes Android Marketplace. ::sadface::
Gapps broken also at first, BUT...using getjar app, I re-downloaded gmail and it had no problem installing and running. So maybe all is not lost?
Edit: Sorry, I lied about gapps. Ignore that, pls.
1.42
I am also having the same problem, no market place which also makes me sad. Anyone know what I should do?
Nice, that's would be great to here this update~
I know AOSP supplied device encryption isn't completely brand new in its entirety regardless of phone model (or even for phones). However since it was only introduced in HC for tablets, ICS does change things since it's first official version meant to run on tablets and phones.
I have Exchange ActiveSync and a policy enabled on there that requires device encryption, however not the external SD card encryption. I have encryption enabled on my ASUS Transformer Prime running ICS. Everything on that unit is still stock and not even rooted, so I haven't tried it on there to see one way or another. However, prior to this I owned a Windows Mobile 6.5 phone (no comments guys). It functioned practically the same way in that the moment you connected via Exchange it started the encryption process and works in the same manner. Quite interesting to see vs. using all these extra apps like Touchdown or Good for Enterprise to augment that capability.
There's a lot of mixed responses on the forums about Android device encryption and custom ROMs, especially for phones that got official ICS early like the Galaxy Nexus. The biggest claims was hindering or even making it unable to install custom ROMs. In this case I could see the issue of the catch 22 of loading a custom ROM without having an external SD card slot.
What the HTC Rezound?
Seems like if we have SD card slots, we can still custom flash and have encryption enabled? Anyone try this yet?

You bring up good questions, but I'd ask a Mod to move this to general.

My exchange policy also mandates encrypting the SDcard. Worst experience EVAR. It failed ot do it properly and I ended up having to put my phone back to stock in order to get it rooted again.
I also noticed that I no longer the setting to install apps from a unknown source any more. I uninstalled my exchange account and checked that setting and re-added my exchange account and so far its been ok.
Also I had it encrypt my external SD card not the internal one. I will NOT be doing that again.

Same thing just now!! It went through the encryption process and though it nearly finished, the process crashed and corrupted the data partition. Doing a wipe won't work because it says "can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p35!, already exists!"
MOD: Can you move this to general?
Yup I pulled my hair out with this. NOTHING works. You have to download the Verizon RUU. I would launch it from a windows machine and have it do its thing the regular way. Once its done you can go through your unlock process again. Seems there is a problem with the encryption process.
It's broken
I tried encryption again with a different ICS ROM (CleanROM 3.7, first was Xtreme). Same exact problem. I think the leaked ROMs are broken in terms of encryption. Doesn't surprise me that much, these aren't not official stable releases...
Long story short, at least for for now DO NOT try to enable device encryption with any ICS. I really hope HTC fixes this issue before they push out a final...
I have had the Rezound for awhile now and have flashed every version of CleanRom (ICS). I use Exchange and my company's security policy requires a pin and SD card encryption. I have had zero problems (lucky me I guess). However, there is a mod that will remove all security requirements on CleanRom and it worked for me. I know company admins will not be happy to hear about that, but the link is below. Not my work and I don't guarantee the results, but worked great for me. Just a note that I found the easiest process was to: 1) Remove all email accounts and clear data on the Mail app, 2) Use ES File Explorer (root access in settings) to mount as R/W, delete the original Mail.apk, 3) Restart phone and copy modified apk (provided in link), 4) Restart phone and setup email accounts. Notes: The download in the link is a zip file and must be renamed to Mail.apk, also you will may get the security message after adding your exchange account, but won't have to setup the pin or encrypt card.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1520431
Hope this helps someone else.
Update: Forgot to add that it appears once I accepted the security policy on the original Mail.apk, I was unable to remove the pin requirement without a factory reset. Then I followed the steps above. Also, decrypting your SD card requires a wipe. Hopefully, that won't be the same for anyone else, but it may be worth it to get rid of the pin and the buggy encryption. Also, the steps in the link may work for you, just didn't for me. Could be my own fault. Anywho, working exchange now with no pin or encryption so I'm happy.
Encryption takes a lot of time with cm 10.2 from volk
How much time I have to calculate for exchange active sync device encryption.
Badadroid v3 on wave S8500 ....
Our exchange server pushes device encryption policy and after starting i takes hours.. But on cm 10.1 v2.1 3hours where enough... Now it tooks 4h and its still running...
Are there any ways to check the progress ?
The original post for the easy instructions to root the NT are a mess. The original instructions for doing it on Windows aren't even complete. I started building the files by following the Linux version of the instructions since they actually made sense and had the files you were to get.
If I'm not mistaken though I ended up using this to root the nook although it wasn't really what I was looking for considering I had CM7 and I would get a boot choice to go nook or android. That all stopped when the sd card I was using freaked itself and failed leaving me stuck at the N screen unless I pulled the SD card. My intentions were to leave the NT stock and not mess with it and run Cyanogen on the sd card. What it appears I'm left with though (without installing a rom) is a co-mingling Nook OS and Android OS since I'm now able to choose a launcher and I have Android screens with those launchers in the Nook itself. Which this is kinda cool because I don't have to reboot the system to switch to the reader anymore.
I installed Launcher 8 to give it some WIN8 love and easy access for my fiancee whom uses a mouth stick to get around in android easier. My problem I'm having is the android system doesn't seem complete. I'm assuming there are gaps missing or something because things are slow and some things aren't working when the icon is selected. Which simulates the program isn't actually there or the files to make it work.
Obviously there wouldn't be a phone but there are other things that used to work with the dual booting CM7 installed on the old SD card that aren't working now.
Since I'm not exactly sure if the above is how I ended up rooting the device I don't even know where to go from here to adding anything to it.
I'm not a developer and loaded this thing up about this time last year. The scenery has changed over the year and I'm kinda lost with all this again. Spent most of the day yesterday trying to figure out where I was and really got no where. So hopefully someone get's what I'm talking about and can give me the push in the right direction.
Not looking to make it dual boot again because this is easier for my fiancee to use like it is. Just want everything to work right like it should. I couldn't tell you what version android I have on here because I never actually loaded an individual rom yet there is android functioning on the device. My idea was to get the newest android which isn't 4.4 yet and is actually from what I can tell that is working would be JB. Yet I have no clue what this thing is running on with the loader and such I have on it.
I'm not enirely sure what it is you want, You say you don't want dual boot, and yet you talk about the non-wotking sd card as if you actually want dual boot.
Anyway, IF you want dual boot you don't need to root it at all. Just burn an sd card with a ready-made CM10.x image, pop it in and boot up. Then choose either internal, stock boot or run from sd-card.
Here is a link to a page with ready-made sd card image file:
http://iamafanof.wordpress.com/2012/11/18/cm10-0-jellybean-sdcard-img-for-nook-tablet/
(This guy, Succulent, has inages of later versions of CM10.x as well, but this is the one I had a link to wothout having to go look for it.)
If you want the Tablet back to fresh "out of the box" condition you can use a repart.img that you can find by looking around a bit. I have referred to it in several posts, but I don't have a link at hand right now, Google is your friend...

*The non working sd card*
It was running as a dual boot before with cyogen or something like that and it would be selectable to go to Nook or the CM7 Android. That card somehow just died and can't even be seen in Windows anymore (have an rma filed with Patriot).
I rooted the nook and now I have what appears to be a partial android OS running inside the BN Nook OS but things aren't functioning. (I prefer it like this vs the dual boot way) So it's like I need a gapps file or something. All settings links lead to the Nook OS settings page and nothing get's me to the Android settings which is why I state it appears to be a partial Android OS. I don't even know what OS version it is because nothing fully functions with the Android side of things. (Take the Launcher8 Loader I installed. No icons actually open what they should. Selecting an icon leads to that icons settings and not what it should be opening. I have the same loader on my Skyrocket so I know how it SHOULD function and selecting an icon to get options for it is not correct. You have to press and hold to get the button to set the icon options.)
You won't get "proper" Android just by rooting. For that you need to install CM x.x. Either install it internally or run it from sd (that you apparently don't want to do)
I have not followed the particular root process you used, but both of the ones I have used myself come with gApps included.
The ones I have used:

The first one (Brian’s) require a 2 GB card the other one (Albert’s) just needs a very small card. (I think 128 MB would do, but I don’t have any that small to try)
Both give good instructions in their topics.
Both install gApps.

Brian's method looks a hell of a lot familiar like that may have been what I did instead but the listing of apps with his doesn't match what I have on the nook now: (only thing I didn't put in the list was what I installed off google play which is launcher8)
android reader
car home
chess
contacts
crossword
downloads
email
es file explorer
flash player settings
getjar
google search
home
home manager
home catcher
hulu plus
music player
my media
netflix
news and weather
nook friends
nook video
nookhwtest
nookviewer
nt hidden settings
pandora
play store
sound recorder
spare parts
splashtop remote
sudoku
superuser
talk
testcenterservice
twitter
That is all the installed apps that pull up under the Nook OS with using Launcher8 and swipping the homescreen to the left it pulls up a list of installed apps just like windows phone.
It must be brians anyway because I just opened the nook hidden settings and under the about Nook Tablet Hidden Settings it shows:
Contact information: [email protected]
Version 0.5.0
I'm just going to move this over here:

This is the development section. Not meant for Q&A. I've already told you how you can return the Tablet to out of the box condition over in that section.

It is the development section I am aware of that and can read. I'm in the 10.2 thread which is actually what I want running on the NT. So what better place to get the help for it then in the thread for it like everyone else has.
Actually you are incorrect as you say nothing about returning the tablet to stock out of the box. Must have been someone else your thinking of. I don't want it to be out of the box though. The nook OS was already setup with apps and books etc. I just want to reverse the rooting I guess to remove the stock android from it so I can then use the links you provided to create a correct root and dual boot using wait for it.....

Really?? Read the last two lines in my first post in this topic.
Also, there is a sticky on top of the topic list in the development section about what is meant to go there and what's not: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1499105

Ok I stand corrected on that matter, but stock out of the box isn't what I want.
I'm not sure you can undo what you've done without loosing content. But as long as you backup your sideloaded stuff, your BN books and apps can be dowloaded at any time.
I suppose you can stay rooted and just disable your alternative launcher and what have you, but you said something about your system being slowed up, and I susoect fixing that without a wipe of some sort would be difficult. Could be wrong though snce I haven't dealt with that myself. Let's hope someone that knows better might come along with advice more to your liking.
While waiting for that you can always make one of the CM 10.x sd card images and run it.It will work completely independent from your trublesome stock OS.
System isn't slow at all also anything side loaded came from B&N so could also be redownloaded like the books. I was just hoping to keep all that intact as it was. There just aren't certain things working that should is all. I'm sure if I was a dev and understood all this stuff more clear I could fix it. I would rather take the easy cheesy way out and just redo it. lol Too much stuff around the house falling behind while messing with this thing.

The BN stock ROM is based on Android v3.2 ("Honeycomb"). Rooting it essentially enables you to install additional apps beyond those that came with the stock ROM, either via the Playstore or by side-loading & installing the apps' .apk files (rooting packages/tools themselves typically add some commonly used apps (Email, Playstore, etc.) to get the user started).
The risk of using rooted stock ROM on the NT (especially as BN won't be releasing any more update for it) is you're stuck with the Android 3.2 base, thus as developers' support for 3.2 wanes over time you won't be able to install newer apps or even newer updates of many current apps. This same "Android version obsolescence" consideration also applies to CM7 and CM9.
As such I think it make the most sense to install CM10 to replace the stock ROM internally on emmc. If you value stability over having the latest/greatest bells/whistles, try Succulent's CM10.0 version dated 12/31/12, or the CM official 10.1.3.

So CM 10 can replace the current android OS inside Nook? Or are you saying CM 10 will replace the Nook OS all together if put on the emmc?

It will alltogether replace the Nook OS. As said in one of the posts in the development section thread they are mutually exclusive.
If you want to keep any of the original Nook functions you cannot run another Android veresion except from sd-card (meaning dual boot).

That's what I thought but the other user made it seem like CM 10 would replace the Honeycomb OS. So that leaves with with waiting for other input on the possibility to unroot without going to complete stock on the Nook..........

Unroot without going to complete stock??
Your options:
Unrooted = stock.
Rooted stock (what you run now) = stock but with access to system files and ability to use for example Google Play store.
Install CM 10.x internally = completely replacing Nook OS.
Dual boot: Running CM 10.x from sd card, leaving the Nook OS (rooted or unrooted, either works) internally. Remove sd-card or reboot through Cyanoboot (you can leave the card in the device) to get to Nook OS.

Yea haven't heard back from anyone on the returning to stock without the complete reset so It looks like I will be moving books over in the near future.
So I'm getting back onto this thing and finishing it up either tonight or tomorrow.
Resetting the Nook to stock can all be done via the nook settings correct? IE no sd card needed.
