Google Chrome OS cloning - with examples using Acer CB C720P - Chromebooks

It seems, well in my tests, that Google has disabled by stealth the ability to clone Chromebooks' Google Chrome OS using the command line:
sudo chromeos-install --skip_src_removable --skip_dst_removable --dst /dev/sdX -
this I noticed first working to get cloudready chromeos installed to a fixed USB SSD as noted in

I can confirm this is also the case for the official stable, beta or dev channel of Chromebook CB C720P.
As of version r60+ of Chrome OS, if you try to clone to USB, it will end up failing.
The way around it is to use an older version, like for C720P
chromeos_8743.85.0_peppy_recovery_stable-channel_mp-v3.bin.zip
or for cloudready
cloudready-free-44.1.34.bin.zip
then when cloned, boot to usb & do the upgrade from within.
N.B. the usb drive/stick must be fixed (like for Windows To Go sticks) - not removable...
Cloudready / Neverware said they addressed the issue with their latest version r66.4, I checked, it did not fix the issue.
One reason to want Chrome OS on USB is for testing on different channels, like stable & dev or canary & so on., without having to go through the drudgery of changing channel on the internal C720P or other CBs SSD.

caveat - unable to use ctrl-alt-F2 or ctrl-alt-T unix shell, even from the install liveusb, which I find very odd,
took the ssd out (had another ssd with official peppy CB O/S)
put ssd into usb 3.0 enclosure - can boot using ctrl-U - so this solves on Acer C720P CB the boot from usb, still same issue with unix terminal shell...
For the other 2 devices Acer Iconia W700, Macbook Air mid-2011
I do not want to install to internal hard drive, the live usb does not have the terminal shell issues.
Any idea how to fix this terminal shell VT issue for Acer CB C720P?

so far no luck with latest cloudready installation on a USB - it creates a live-USB ok, but there is no option to install to USB, only to internal ssd.

- issue command that allows you to boot self-signed Chromium OS with ctrl-U
- use another ssd in chromebook other than original (its an mSSD)
- install #cloudready to it by booting liveUSB
- get a mSSD to usb 3.0 adapter
- use the adapter to boot the usb.

Solved - for Acer Iconia W700 - I used an external SSD with USB 3.0 adapter & installed via command line an older version of cloudready r44 (for newest versions v60+ cmd line install does not work) - might work with ctrl-L on @Acer C720P
Acer Chromebook C720P booting from USB solved, the USB created installation using Acer Iconia W700 works on C720P with shell working,
The trick was install cloudready r44 first to USB SSD seen as a fixed disk drive (not for removable USB sticks) - then allow it to upgrade to r60+

yeah I know they'd say they don't support CB's -
but it is crippleware on behalf of @google, so #cloudready is out for me, shame.
! @arnoldthebat latest Chromium OS special build r69 on the other hand can boot Acer CB C720P - you need use this trick: try & boot using Ctrl-L (which will fail), then boot using Ctrl-U...
For Android it misses arc config files, plenty of them, so will fail to load Android.

Remix OS and Intel Bay / Cherry Trail tablets

Hi there. Is there any chanse to boot Remix Os on this kind of tablets? Everything goes only to "detecting android" then stuck with black screen. Why ?
Hi, this is because on those tablets there's mostly Android on it, which means Remix OS' boot loader is not able to correctly detect those preinstalled partitions. If this is a dual boot tablet (Android + Windows), try starting up Windows first, then shutdown, then try starting RemixOS again.

I know on my baytrail tablet, which came with windows on, to boot ubuntu I have to edit the grub.cfg to get it to boot. And even then it just shows a black screen for a very long time before getting to the UI.
While android is not ubuntu they do have a lot in common. I could dig out the grub.cfg if that helps.
I am running Remix OS on my Winbook TW-801 now and it works great.
Got this running on my NEC Lavie tw-708...works smooth and stable..but driver problems are present..
No Bluetooth
No rotation
No GPS
No audio
No brightness controls
No battery gauge
WiFi works
Video playback is smooth
The chipset of the device Intel atom 3735F..its a bay trail chipset with a 32bit uefi..
So strange that mine Acer W4-820 stucks on black screen after Detecting. WTF?
Means I am lucky that my tablet manufacturer officially released Remix OS.

The above does not work on my TW-801 either but I do have audio (it kind of sounds crackely though - when I route the video and audio via hdmi out -only the video works). Other than those things it works good. I was surprised that the touch screen works for me when running Remix OS. Now I want to try and make a NTFS sd and expand the data.img file so I can have more space. Anybody able to get it running on a NTFS sd and expand the data.img file? For a $150 tablet this TW-801 was a great bargain. Now I can run Windows 10, Ubuntu via VMware virtual machine, and Android. The TW-801 has a SD slot that works with 128GB sdcard - so I might try to make a partition on it. For now I am running Remix OS using a 3.0 usb card reader with a 32GB sdcard. The TW-801 has a full size 3.0 usb slot. I can also run a 3.0 usb hub for multiple usb slots (usb keyboard/mouse). I think I can use Linux Deploy to install Linux to a separate sdcard using the usb hub because there are x86 distros.

Make sure you have a fast sdcard - I used a slower one first and couldn't get it to boot.

i boot from emmc (internal memory) . i can get to grab install menu qnd juar select the menu option ( install) then i get black screen

I see one person got it to work on a Winbook. No matter what I do I can't seem to get it to boot off the USB. I got into the BIOS and put all the USB options to the top, made sure secure boot was disabled. It just goes right to Windows. no matter what I try. I also tried Legacy and EFI versions. Same result on both.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

make sure that you have the file bootia32.efi in /EFI/BOOT/ on you usb dongle.
I successfully boot on the key but it doesn't arrive on the desktop and stays stuck on a Black Screen. I have an Chuwi vi8 plus xz8300 bay trail processor.

Take a look on linux boot params on grub. try to test another params. bootia32.efi should work on any bay trail as John Wells do it for Ubuntu.

Not true. Microsoft Surface (2, 3, 4) uses those chipsets, and doesn't come with Android on it. My Teclast tablet doesn't have Android on it. Neither do 2 other tablets I looked at.
RemixOS doesn't seem to boot properly on any of these.

Sometimes after installing your device only boots to a black screen. *Typically this happens when the NVRAM and ESP are out of sync. This can be easily fixed by performing the following:
1. Start with the device switched off.
2. Connect your LiveUSB.
3. Power on the device and press the relevant function key or key sequence to boot from the LiveUSB.
4. Open a terminal windows and enter:
type efibootmgr*
5. If the 'efibootmgr' is not installed enter:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install -y efibootmgr
6. Next remove any boot entries that may have been created through the earlier installs by entering:
* * * for BOOTENTRY in 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
* * * do
* * * * * sudo efibootmgr -b ${BOOTENTRY} -B
* * * done
7. Now create an Ubuntu boot entry by entering:
sudo efibootmgr -c -d /dev/mmcblk0 -p 1 -l \\EFI\\ubuntu\\grubx64.efi -L Ubuntu
8. Remove the LiveUSB and reboot from the newly created Ubuntu entry.
Note: If you have a dual boot installation then the ESP partition may be the second partition so modify the '-p 1' in the command above to '-p 2' or to whatever the ESP partition is. Likewise for some devices the eMMC is '/dev/mmcblk1' and not '/dev/mmcblk0' so again modify the command as appropriate. If your device uses a 32-bootloader then use 'bootia32.efi' rather than 'grubx64.efi' in the command. It also sometimes doesn't work first time and requires all the steps to be repeated which should then fix the issue

Ability to quick access files on Windows hard drive
Broadcom WiFi support. More quick settings in notification panel. Battery stats time remaining.

Tutorial for installing inside virtualbox or Qemu. Qemu would be better.
Allow installation direct from ISO onto Hypervisors - Qemu, Virtualbox, VMWare, Hyper-V, etc instead of needing to dump onto USB stick.
Support vga for second monitor

Why do you need to dump to USB first? ISO runs fine in VBox.
support for tincore keymapper style overlay apps, or better yet build in a keymapper into remix.

You can't persist data running from the ISO directly.
I want to install it on VMWare workstation !
I know it probably wont happen but xposed for android desktop would be bloody awesome!
How about liveDVD?
Booting from liveDVD, just like Linux distros do it.
I beg you, add this feature.
My BIOS is not detecting any pendrives plugged into USB 3.0 ports, which are needed to boot this OS up.
(It's detected in USB 2.0, but it's too slow, only 4,5MB/s writing speed. The funny thing is that both ports - 2.0 and 3.0 - can be used by Win7 and Linux Mint that I have installed, no problem with that at all. It's just my BIOS that hates me.)
I just want to put a DVD Disc with RemixOS on it and try it out.
This would be a killer feature, since many ppl end up having problems with their pendrives/partitions/usb2.0/usb3.0/bios settings...
My Wishlist!
Most Importantly, the possibility of opening, and (just emphasis, no yelling here :angel: ) MAKING CHANGES TO files in the windows-formatted partitions (R/W mode) , HDMI Audio, Better driver support for both WiFi adapters as well as Graphics Cards (NVIDIA to be precise (like my 610M )), XPOSED, and a custom-recovery-like interface with apt functionalities.
An own web browser, maybe a Chromium fork (which is optimized for the desktop) that has the default setting to load desktop pages (there is no way to set this as default on Chrome), accepts right-clicks and shows a popup, etc.
But so far I haven't been able to even get RemixOS to boot on my Laptop (Nvidia GT-540M), although I have a Remix Mini (2GB) which I use regularly, so driver support is definitely #1 for me.

Acer C720P - Remix OS - Wildly impressed.

First the issues. I was not able to figure out how to set it up to where I can install Remix OS on my chromebook's SSD instead of having to use a USB stick. I also wasn't able to figure out why running the ISO installer tool that comes with the most recent download (yesterday) didn't work. I used it on a 32GB PNY USB flash drive, but after going into the legacy boot menu on my Chromebook, and selecting my USB stick to boot from, it was not able to find an operating system. Instead, I used Linux Live USB Creator (LiLi). I manually selected the Remix OS ISO that came with the download, and installed it to my USB stick. My chromebook recognized it immediately as a bootable OS. It even gave me the options for guest mode, and write mode. I chose write mode. The only downside to this is not being able to choose how large the partitions should be. Either way, it installed successfully.
The awesome parts. It recognized and works uniformly with my chromebook's touch screen and touch pad. Zero issues. It even recognizes some touch-pad short cuts like two-finger scrolling, etc. It doesn't recognize some of my keys on the keyboard itself, like volume up/down, and brightness up/down, but this is easily managed at the task bar. I also tested Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes to see if games would be sluggish running on a USB stick. I don't know about all games, but that one in particular ran as though it was on my Nexus 7. Super smoothly, with no issues. Aside from it being a bit sluggish running apps for the first time, (it frequently asked if I wanted to wait, or to force close Facebook and others - hitting wait works), I am very impressed with the experience. It's everything I could hope for in a beta android desktop OS! :good: :good:
PS, I'm actually running it right now as I type this.
I got it to install on my Acer R14 with a triple boot, windows 10, ubuntu, remix os. If you use universal usb installer and install directly to a NTFS partition on your hard drive you can use RMXtools to make the data .img whatever size you want. I did it for 50GB and have installed alot of apps and i still have 48GB left. I really like this OS.
Well I tried ubuntu on my chromebook for a while, but wasn't feeling it. I would have to put it on in order to install Remix OS to a hard drive no?
No just use universal usb installer and select non-linux installation and install directly to your ntfs drive. The expand the data file with RMXTools to whatever size you want.

Make your usb bootable with Rufus.
Been using it from USB for weeks now I'll try the Linux USB tool, would be amazing to get this running on the hdd. Does you're touchpad work??

There has got to be some variation in components with revisions of the C720P, because no OS I have tried to boot on mine has supported the mouse other than Gallium. If I install the GalliumOS kernel on Debian it works fine, but no idea how I would do that with Android. Your touchpad really just worked huh? Not for me, not in the version of RemixOS I downloaded from the Jide site last night, nor in the hacked edition or whatever it's called here on XDA.

Can't install RemixOS to USB stick on some NVIDIA graphics systems.

I tried to install RemixOS to a USB stick, but got the same blank screen as I previously had gotten when trying to install Linux Mint on my system with an NVIDIA GTX 970 video card. Turns out some newer NVIDIA graphics cards do not have video support until the drivers are actually installed, unlike my previous AMD card.
What I had to do to install Mint was to use recovery mode on the Live CD, then use the "NOMODESET" command for basic video graphics to be able to see the install screens.
Even using "NOMODESET" for the USB install wouldn't help very much for RemixOS since there's no way to install the official NVIDIA graphics drivers after the OS boots like you can in Linux (that I know of).
Is there any workaround? For now, I have to use RemixOS through VirtualBox on my main PC to test and play around with the OS because of this.

Remix OS (for PC) boot problems...

I have tried creating a USB RAM-drive, and booting RemixOS (for PC/64) from it on my Cherry Trail (Teclast X16 Power) tablet. It gets to the screen that says "System initializing, please wait...". but never gets past that.
As mentioned, my Teclast X16 tablet is an Intel "Cherry Trail" (Z8700) dual-boot device, that can boot into either Android 5.1 or Windows10. Unfortunately the Android build that comes with it is not very good. (IE: Though the tablet has a GPS sensor, it doesn't work in Android. There are also a few other oddities about the Teclast Android build.)
It is possible that RemixOS is trying to make use of the Android data partition that is on the tablet's internal SSD (instead of using the USB RAM-Drive that RemixOS is on), and being that it already has data on it from the Android OS that came installed on the tablet, maybe it causes problems during boot.
I wanted to just try out RemixOS on this device. A few of the things that I really want to know is...
- Will the tablet touch screen work with RemixOS, or would I have to always use a mouse & keyboard?
- Will the GPS sensor work with RemixOS?
I was also looking to see if there was a way that I could boot RemixOS (for PC) in a VirtualBox VM, but I have not had any success getting that to work. Has anyone been able to run it in a VM successfully?

I just got my hands on a Pipo W1S (x5 z8300 Cherry Trail) and tried a couple of times to boot up Remix OS from a thumb drive with no luck so far.
