Updates with twrp and root. - Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 / 5 Plus Questions & Answers

Xiaomi has forced an update on me and it says it will update tonight at 2am, will this brick my phone? I assume the update cannot be applied with a custom recovery? Is there any way to turn this off theres no menu button so i cant change anything in the updater.

You can go to settings/About phone/system update you will see three dots upper on the right, go to Auto updates and you can choose between options like Download automatically and Install automatically

As I said there is no menu button there this time by that I meant the 3 dots. It is being forced on me and there doesn't appear to be a way to stop it.
Okay i used a file manager to locate the zip file and delete it and now the 3 dots have appeared i clicked auto update and as i suspected i already disabled auto update and auto download everything in that menu is disabled so i dont understand why it has downloaded a file i didnt tell it to and then set a time to update it. The notification of an update also cant be swiped away, this is more intrusive than the windows 10 updates!

So strange anyway you have some of these two options;
- Freeze the app Updater through Titanium
- Delete directly (or copy in other secure place just in case) with a root file explorer, go to /system/app/Updater. Not confuse with /system/app/SystemAppUpdater this app updates the system apps from miui

[Q] Fonts constantly downloading

I upgraded my SII to ICS. I then discovered that I could change the fonts on the phone, so I installed an app called Fontomiser SP and downloaded a font called AppleGaramond.htm. I decided I didnt like the font, so I deleted it, and uninstalled the Fontomiser SP app from the device.
Now, I find that every hour or so, I get a notification that AppleGaramond.htm download is complete, I look at my list of files in "Downloads" and the file is there again. So, I delete it, then I get another notification that download is complete, and there it is again in my downloads. If I don't delete it, I end up with several versions of the files sitting in my "Downloads" folder.
How can I stop it constantly downloading this file ?
(By the way, I am a complete novice on the android system, so if possible, please keep it simple !)

go to recovery mode wipe cache and wipe dalvik cache and fix permission and reboot the device and see it worked or not
For rebooting to recovery: press volume up, home button, and power button simultaneously and wait for the phone to reboot. Now you have to do what sahil said above.
For cleaning dalvik cache, enter "advanced" menu first.

correct but if im not mistaken there are several users out there with jb and flash working for them
If you do have Flash installed then open your browser ( it CAN'T be Google Chrome ) then Menu > Settings > Advance and be sure 'Enable Plug-Ins' is "Always On"

Actually the opposite. If you have flash sideloaded (i.e. you used a program to load it because you can auto install from Google Play anymore), you go to the browser and select Settings>Advanced and Enable plug-ins should be set to off. then try a flash sit and that should work.
EDIT: When sideloading, make sure you allow apps to be loaded from unknown sources.

You are right all versions of android 2.2 upwards support flash, only chrome doesn't support it, some Roms don't support it.

How to disable OTA Update Notification for Root users?

I can't seem to find which program to freeze in Titanium Backup. Any ideas out there?
Have any 10e root users accepted the update? Do you lose root even with Voodoo Keeper?
Thanks!
You can try freezing 'lgfotapermission' app using Titanium Back up. It's just my guess. No guarantees. YMMV.

Actually looking thru the backup/restore column in titanium backup I don't see that app anywhere. Only LG prefixed app's I see are as follows:
LG Keyboard...
LG MLT 2.3.8
LGinstallservice 1.3.11 (Perhaps this could be it??)
LGSetupWizard 4.3.013
LGSystemServer 1.0

Thanks - I found it, and froze it, however I'm still getting the notification. Even after reset. Odd.
I believe the update check code is embedded into the settings apk. It will need to be re-compiled to prevent this.
If we knew what URL the device is getting its updates from we can block it with a hosts entry.
I found some info here on disabling the update notification for anyone who is still interested.

It looks like you need to freeze these two apps in Titanium Backup:
com.lge.lgfota.permission
com.lge.omadmclient
V10C P765 Rooted
I simply unchecked following option and I think it stops future OTA Notification.
Settings >>> About Phone >>> Software Update >>> Check Automatically (Uncheck this)
May be I am wrong, may be you pals are talking something else..

Doesn't seem to work as update notification is still popping up on my P769.
This is how I stoped my phone from updateing and nagging. ( Must be rooted )
1. Download and install ( system tuner apk from playstore )
2. Launch system tuner and choose ( system with the red icon )
3. Choose (Google services framework ) and hit (details)
4. Scroll down to services and uncheck ( update.systemUpdateService
Thats all.

While I can't vouch for anything else besides the P675 10e Tmobile version, the following method will stop the update prompts. It *should* work on all ICS and JB devices, including Nexus.
0. Root, if you haven't already.
1. Download AutoRun Manager
2. In ARM, choose "Advanced"
3. Touch the wrench icon, and check
- Show System Entries
- Enable System Application Disable
4. Back on the application list, tap the refresh (circle arrow) icon if you don't see system apps. They should have a red background.
5. Find the app Google System Framework (aka: GSF) and tap it.
6. Uncheck the "com.google.<something>.gsf.update.SystemUpdate" receivers. I can't read my own handwriting at the moment, but they both end in SystemUpdate.
Am I the only one who definitely DONOT hit thanks when I see this line "Hit thanks if it helped"?
Thread cleaned. I don't see the reason of this whole argue you had. If someone wants to post hit thanks, let it be. It's definitely not worthy to be discussed. Now you should both excuse each other for jumping the guns for nothing.

This caused a permanent wakelock on SystemUpdateService on my LG Optimus P769, so my phone never went to sleep mode. I even rebooted several times, and checked over several days. As soon as I re-enabled update.systemUpdateService, the phone was able to sleep again. It did seem to prevent the OTA popup from re-appearing, but at a cost of battery life.

Updates and new installs - ok; sideloads - no go

S-on and rooted.
Noticed this with Aurora about a week ago. Thought it was just a problem with that app. Now I discover the same problem trying to update VLC.
"Unknown sources" box IS checked.
Any ideas?

When you say sideloading, do you mean installing from an apk on your phone, or pushing one with adb?
At what point in the process do you get an error or stoppage, and describe what that stoppage or error is.

Sure.
I was trying to update from an apk that I had downloaded to the phone. (Same behavior for apks for two different apps, Aurora and VLC.)
The install process starts, but can't get past the "Cancel / Install" dialog screen unless I select Cancel. When I try to select Install, it behaves as if the button is not recognized.

Yeah, that sounds like an overlay issue. Do you have HALO or a screen filter running on your phone? Or anything that draws on top of everything else? If so, try disabling it, then installing the apk. If that works, you can enable whatever it was again without any issues (until you need to install another apk from sd).

I'm not sure which app is the culprit, but I'll try to sort that out.

Also I'll add some of my findings for the LG Tribute that might of got lost in the other thread while we wait for questions.
Agreed.
Sent From This RIDICULOUS LG TRIBUTE
I'll Add Some Of My Findings Here As Well...
Camera sounds annoy me and I couldn't find any tweak, app, or anything to disable them on the LG's Camera, so I figured it out myself. I have wrote a guide and included a .zip with the files you need to switch.
- How to disable your LG Camera Sounds -
Found by high247 of XDA-Developers for the Virgin Mobile LG Tribute LG660.
-# 01. You are going to need to be ROOTED on your phone and have a Root Explorer. I personally use Root Browser from the Play Store.
And you'll need the .ogg files from this .zip file.
I've you are not ROOTED please check Unjustified Dev's guide here on how to do so.
Here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/development/guide-root-method-lg-devices-t3049772
-# 02. First move the .ogg files from this .zip to your phones SDcard.
cam_snap_0.ogg
camera_click.ogg
camstart.ogg
camstop.ogg
VideoRecord.ogg
(I've included backups of all the orginal .ogg's in Backup-ogg in the .zip. Just delete the .bak off the end and they are the orginal files in case you want to switch back.)
-# 03. Ok now on to disableing the sounds on your phones Camera (For whatever reasons you might what to do so. For me, they just annoy me)
Open your Root Explorer and go to your SDcard and multi-copy the .ogg's you put there.
Now navigate to System folder, click that,
now locate the Media folder, click that,
now locate the Audio folder, click that,
now locate the UI folder, click that, then once inside the UI folder click PASTE to copy the files there. It might be useful to delete the old ones before hand.
-# 04. Almost done, now you have to change the to .ogg file permissions to 0644 rw-r--r--
(If your not good with permissions, when you select permissions just make sure Read is checked in every box and Write is only checked on Owner, everything else unchecked.)
-# 05. ALL DONE. No need to reboot or anything, just go to your Camera and see that the annoying sounds are gone.
ENJOY!

We need more detailed information to help, how did you get stuck for one?
I got the update for my Tribute and like a idiot I tried to install it but it just keeps booting into TWRP, I wiped the phone and than I restored a backup from my SD card that I had but it still reboots to TWRP, the backup installed successfully but it just keeps booting to TWRP, any ideas how to fix this? The backup has the TWRP recovery and root. I also tied the new rom and it still boots to TWRP.
What to Change that ugly color on your default LG Messaging App?
You need to install Xposed Framework on your rooted LS660/F60
1. Here is the Xposed Framework installer you need for G3 Tweakbox to work: http://dl.xposed.info/latest.apk
2. Now download G3 Tweakbox from the Play Store and install it:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...weaksbox&hl=en
3. Open Xposed Framework installer make sure the Xposed Framework is installed up to date and and then make sure you check the module for G3 Tweakbox and reboot your device before anything will work.
4. Now open G3 Tweakbox app, go to Messaging, scroll all the way to the bottom and you can change the color.
5. After you make changes Reboot your phone for them to take full effect. My messaging app now is Black.
And in this post I show what else I found that worked with G3 Tweakbox on the LS660, even some pictures : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=59451127&postcount=766
NOTE: Not all tweak work. TRY AT YOUR OWN RISK.

You were on ZV4 right? I believe you have to flash the boot.img for ZV4 from TWRP and that will fix it. You might have to flash from fastboot though I forget, its almost 3am here and its been a long day.
Extract the boot.img from this .zip and try that.
Ok so for whatever reason I just could not get the damn OTA updates to stop re-downloading, even after doing what cpshelley2 said to do. My problem was update.zip kept re-downloading to /cache/ and then the notification would pop up to install. I ran the adb command cpshelley2 suggested and turned OTA off, made sure the update.zip was deleted, long pressed the notification clicked app info went to manager cleared all.
And it would just keep downloading over and over again, giving me the notification to install over and over again, so what I found was apps named Disable Service and Autorun Manager on the play store, they are free and for root, that fixed this for me.
DisableSevice Link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=cn.wq.disableservice&hl=en
AutorunManager Link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rs.autorun&hl=en
**WARNING DO BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU ARE CHECKING AND UNCHECKING IN THESE PROGRAMS YOU COULD MESS SOMETHING UP!***
Open the Disable Services app, click where it says System near the top, then scroll down to Google Play services, click it, now scroll down almost all the way near the bottom and find SystemUpdateService then uncheck it will turn red.
Now open Autorun Manager and select Advance Mode, then in the top right click Settings, make sure Show System Entries and Enable System App Disable are both Checked, now find Google Play Services, click it to see a list of receivers, scroll down til you find com.google.android.gms.update.SystemUpdateService$Receiver and com.google.android.gms.update.SystemUpdateService$ActiveReceiver and com.google.android.gms.update.SystemUpdateService$SecertCodeReceiver ,then un-check them.
Now your done.
Reboot phone and update.zip will stop downloading in /cache/ (**delete it one last time if it is there still**) and you will stop being notified about the ZV5 update.
Hope that helps someone else too. Any questions feel free to ask and remember I'm on the LG LS660 Virgin Mobile.
Hidden Custom Lock Screen Wallpaper Feature
Oh and I have found how to make custom lock screens for everyone else with the LG Tribute, its hidden in the Photos app, download or take whatever picture, open it in Photos, click the 3 dots in the top right bringing down a menu, click Set as.. click More.. Set as Lock screen wallpaper. Crop and set!
Took me forever to find that. Could not find any info anywhere on the internet. lol
Hope that helps someone else too!
Hidden Menu
Dial this number below.
5689#*660#
That unlocks the Hidden Menu.
If you Dial ##3424# it will ask you for a Six Digit Service Code or known as a MSL Service Code. ( No known working codes have been found as of this posting. )
USE AT YOUR OWN RISK.
How to Access the Sprint OMADM Hidden Menu, No Root Needed.
Download Activity Launcher from the play store.
Open Activity Launcher and at the top click on Recent Activities at the top and switch it to All Activities... Once you did that scroll all the way down the list to Software Updates and click on it... A list will appear showing all the activities it does... Scroll down to Sprint OMADM Hidden Menu, there are 3 you can access though 4 say Sprint OMADMA Hidden Menu.
One will let you change the carrier branding.
Hope that helps you and let us know what happens if you try it please.
NOTE: You can Edit Chameleon Node options in the Sprint OMADM Hidden Menu com.lge.lgdmsclient.ui.test.SPROmadmHiddenMenu such as "Brand Name" in Edit Chameleon Node... Click it... Then click GET... If you have Virgin Mobile that should pop up under Brand Name... Click it and edit to say what you want... Then click SET and reboot phone to take effect.
CHANGE SETTINGS ATE YOUR OWN RISK AND NEVER FACTORY RESET OUTSIDE OF YOUR DEFAULT BRANDING OPTION.
And that my friends is mostly what I have found so far for our phones that are useful.
Now any questions feel free to ask and I'll answer ASAP. 3am here so I'm off to bed now. Night my friends.

How do install a custom recovery once rooted? Can I just install Flashify and then select "Download TWRP" from there, or is there something else I need to do?
You can use flashify if you have the zip for twrp

You were on ZV4 right? I believe you have to flash the boot.img for ZV4 from TWRP and that will fix it. You might have to flash from fastboot though I forget, its almost 3am here and its been a long day.
Extract the boot.img from this .zip and try that.
