Oreo, Note 8 never been the same after - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Guides, News, & Discussion

I am frustrated user of Note 8, received it early September 2017, been using without any issues until Oreo update arrived in May 2018.
Once phone was updated i have done factory restore and start clean, i have done same procedure twice as i am having the following issues running phone in high performance mode:
1. The phone used to run smooth in Power Saving Mode, now its sluggish
2. Pretty sure there is greater delay between finger print sensor reading and screen turning on
3. General UI laggy, in performance mode its no longer as snappy as it used to be
4. The edge panel can sometimes slide out but stutter on animation
5. Camera launching from the hard button press, can have delay or stutter to launch too
6. Battery feels like gotten worse
Anyone else can agree?

Are you on the original Oreo update?

Never had any problems...

I agree with OP. It has gotten worse. I use to go a full day without having to charge it. Now after Oreo, I'm at near 78% after 4 hrs of YouTube background play compared to 86 to 84% on nougat.

factory reset your phone. my battery and performance has only gotten better since 8.0.

Got to agree with everyone I'm on AT&T Note 8 running smoothly like butter no issues at all on Oreo.

Yes, not rooted
Maybe it's different for me, my phone is unlocked, update came via Samsung direct.
Already reset my phone twice so won't be doing it again, just want it back how it was.

This is nonsense, Note 8 got better with every Oreo update month by month, everything is butter smooth and battery is better than Nougat.

How is it nonsense? So because yours and others work fine, this person can't be having issues? Why do people keep making such ignorant statements without thinking things through?!
Others have had a bad experience with Oreo, and not just a handful(5).

Have you seen any similar threads to mine with resolution? I dont sign in here much anymore, partly due to Note 9 software been so good that I felt it needs no rooting and was happy with stock setup and apps from Google play store.

I disagree. My Exynos N950F has still been smooth since the day I got it out of the box. I only got the base update to Oreo (possibly due to my CSC). My experience has been good so far. My phone has never been sluggish while playing games or multitasking using multi-window or App-Pair (whatever the feature is called in the GraceUI).
I'd suggest you backup, wipe (again), and restore your phone in increments until you find the root cause. I'm willing to bet that your issue is with an app that runs in the background. Are all your installs from the Google Play Store, and not APKs from questionable third parties?

As I said I won't be resetting for 3rd time, if it was dirty app I would of identified. If you are familiar with recent android features if got pretty at identifying bad apps too.
After each reset I gradually loadedvphone with apps and settings.

I'd flash latest full stock with Odin using full wipe. Better than factory reset for clearing out persistent issues. Aside from that not sure what else can be suggested. Oreo has been running great here with every OTA.

I suggest downloading the firmware of the version you are currently on if you care about rooting in the future and flash it with Odin. Seems like you're on v3 bootloader based on your post. Go from that direction with testing.

I agree with the battery being worse. For me standby drain is way higher on Oreo. On N I would lose about 5% overnight. Now around 11-15%. Phone is smooth though

Yes I agree oreo is laggy and a battery hog on my at&t note 8. Other then the android version being different I see no visible ui changes vs 7.1.1. Why do they keep changing the bootloader? Dont understand that.

Do you have a Snapdragon or Exynos device?
My Exynos N950F only drains 1% overnight, but I only got 1 update TO Oreo since I got my device (out of the box).

Those running Lollipop - what are your thoughts?

Now that there are a couple of versions of the 'official' Lollipop update floating around for the Z3v and people are using it, what's the verdict? What are your thoughts? Was it worth the wait? Is it running alright, better, or worse, than KK? Any problems or concerns?
It might help if you let us know which version you installed (.485 or .509), if you're rooted, and if you did a clean wipe and install or flashed over your previous version.

It does not. I don't think it works on either build, but I'm running version .485, FYI.
Multi-user / guest mode also has been deactivated and is missing.
Im actually enjoying the update, fun little things here and there. Im greatful to have the update everything works well.
I have the unrooted .485 build. To my knowledge almost everything is working perfectly. Battery life is the same if not better. I love Sony's take on material design. The only two things missing are multiple user accounts and the ability to do voice over data, but I do not think that will be turned on until Verizon officially releases the update. Since verizon hasn't released it yet, I'm positive they haven't "hit the switch" to turn it on for our devices.
I'm waiting for Verizon to push this to my phone but am a little concerned that pdanet/foxfi will stop working for me when it comes. Any thoughts on this? What are my risks of waiting on not rooting? Wi-Fi hotspots is critical for me.

I'm actually experiencing a dramatic DROP in battery charge longevity and haven't been able to find out what's doing it.
Other than that, the upgrade is "OK", but without the missing features that we're waiting on Verizon for, I'm not sure it was worth all the hassle.
I just look at it as good practice for when 2 have to go through all this crap again when they finally do release the good stuff.
Edit...
After having whittled down some of the background apps that I had done in K.K. (per Gigaspx's list), I am now experiencing much better battery life. Also, now that I have Xposed-lollipop-z3v working to tweak the interface, it's looking less foreign to me and more intuitive.
I had both versions installed and clearly prefer 509. I had WiFi issues with 485 and my phones was overheating while wireless charging. 509 fixed those issues and everything is working fine. Compared to 4.4.4 everything is faster and I rely like the new lollipop interface. I haven't done any testing but I think that the battery life also improved.
I'm on 509 and have seen a few odd things.
My GPS locked up the other day and would not update my location. I had to reboot to fix it. This has never happened to me on this phone before.
Hitting recent apps lags. It takes long enough to come up with the list of recent apps that I start to question whether or not I hit the button every single time.
Settings from Tasker profiles that have always worked without a hitch are not being respected. For example, the screen will continuously turn off after 5 or 10 seconds but when I check the settings for screen timeout it says 2 minutes. Re-applying the profile works as expected after.
Other than that I'm enjoying LP. I'll have to do some testing to see what I can fix.

so can we downgrade from lolipop to kitkat?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I'm starting to have a constant wakelock. No idea why and I cant fully charge with a wireless charger.
I have only had lollipop a couple of days now (flashed 509). So far I like it. Battery is about the same, never have had any lag, maybe lollipop is a little faster? Several things I like - BT seems more stable, lock screen controls are now more consistent, and the security features are better (I use a pin to lock my phone). I generally like the small changes to the interface.
Things I don't like. The volume controls is not intuitive (muting etc). Themes don't work as well either. Can't seem to get navigation buttons to change.

I had Bluetooth problems updating to non root 5.02 without doing a factory reset. I switched back to 4.4.4, rooted and then updated with dual recovery and have had no issues for the past two weeks. My sony smartband talk watch was having a lot of problems which prompted me to go back to a clean factory reset 4.4.4 and then root. I used kingroot and installed recovery before flashing the prerooted 5.02. I'm getting 5.5 hours sot and its very stable.

I tested my Z3V on 5.02 with my son's Galaxy S5 and it does work including HD Video.
I was having the notification tray freeze up the whole phone from time to time. Had to force reboot.
Anyone else? It only happens sometimes when pulling it down.

Don't upgrade to Nougat Guys....its too slow.

I yesterday updated my axon 7 to nougat....damn its too slow now.
Fingerprint is too slow,,even sometimes i have to use my password because it does'nt recognize my fingerprint.
Camera quality is also lowered as comparison to marshmallow.
UI is the same just what i noticed is that settings menu is minutely changed.
Overall speed of device is lowered also
Most disastrous problem is in whatsapp...photo sending is dammnnn tooo slow.
I agree and have same whatsapp problem. I'll go back Lineage or Stock Marshmallow.
I haven't had any of these issues. Are you running stock?

Yes...its stock
I'd try a factory reset if you're really unhappy. If it happens to me I'm going LOS.
I like Nougat better and don't find it any slower.... I do notice the animations are a bit slower, such as: it fades in when the fingerprint is used vs how it just popped on with Marshmallow.
Camera focuses faster and better on close-up objects, and low light seems slightly less grainy....The focus doesn't fluctuate as much either (normal light and low-light). The sound is louder and some slight visual tweaks that I like better. It just feels smoother, but not slower.
After using LoS for a day (couldn't stand the audio issue), I realize the quick-settings in the pull down are very similar, just skinned a little different.
LoS and AOKP did feel faster, but I think it was because the animations were snappier.
I've had no issues with Nougat B15 since receiving it about 10 days ago. Yes... I am in the BETA program at ZTE.
Battery issues no longer exist and I've had no problems with the fingerprint sensor ever.
Have you tried clearing the cache partition? That my help.
Complety stock here, B27 to B29 and now N (A2017U)
Sending a photo in whatsapp and the phone almost complety freeze
restore to factory state: same behaviour
At least do not disturb is working... for the rest, i am confortable with N
EDIT: No, phone really slow in some apps, i want to go to Lineaje OS, i am tired of this CRAP software
Yeah, I factory reset my phone after the N update. It's so freaking slow it's almost unusable... Fingerprint reader, which is the only way I unlock this phone, it's pretty much useless now.
That whatsapp problem is very annoying, I'm not sure if I can stay on Stock for too long
I updated yesterday. I like it so far.
I don't have any slow down like you mention.
The camera focus is now much faster and precise.
Only good things on my side so far.

Activate developer options in settings and turn your animation scale down to .5x, or even 0x. Then snap snap! Phone is super fast.
I dont use whatsapp so I cant comment on that but in regards to everything else mentioned, Im not having any of those problems at all. Camera is definitely better, battery is lasting longer so far, fingerprint is still the same (takes longer from a deep sleep but still fine), scrolling and swiping is still smooth. So far the upgrade has been fantastic. btw, completely stock here.
updated, completely stock and no problems for me either. now waiting for my daydream viewer to try it out
Working ok for me so far, bone stock from b29 to b15 nougat.. No issues and runs great.. I did notice that when I tell it to close all apps, it frees up only 1.5 ram instead of almost 2 in mm.. not sure if it's just nougat being more aggressive memory wise or what..
I have updated from B19 to N B15 and i like it so far. Battery is good probably the same as B15, Camera is better, WhatsApp is completely screwed, cant type anything after taking a picture. Just freezes. Tried cleaning data in WhatsApp and still no go. Dont want to factory reset so i wont even bother doing that since it hasn't helped anyone.
Beta testers, can you guy let ZTE know about the WhatsApp issues we're having?

btw how were people communicating during beta testing? I think that for the A2017G nougat beta test they are using a whatsapp group to communicate... so if their mean of communication was that screwed, I guess someone would have noticed so far.
I'm on marshmallow stock with a A2017G and I didn't install that much stuff nor apps running intensive background tasks but after some days without reboot, the phone is starting to be kinda slow and sluggish for no reason, the responsiveness is lacking (it's not an issue of transition duration) and I need to restart to get it back to normal. There is also the embedded browser, it's slow to load pages in general but when you open a little dozen of tabs, it becomes almost unusable.
Half solution for whatsapp problem
For those who have the problem with sending photos in whatsapp: after taking the image, turn off and turn on the screen, that bring things back to normal speed
That's the only problem I've had with Nougat, along with a bit of slowness on the notifications panel

Accidentily upgraded to Android 10

So today was the day. I did not pay attention to this nagging upgrade-popup and i accidentally clicked to upgrade.
I thought this would not be possible, because I got it rooted but apprearently I was wrong.
So here I am: a Xiaomi Mi A3 with Anroid 10 ... AND I HATE IT.
Batterydrain, ugly icons, and so on.
Is there any way to restore the system before the update? (Shouldn't this be possible, because of this A-B side system the phone has?)
If i can't go back: Is there a way to get the old wifi and signal-strenghts icons back?
... and I will figure it out how to root it again I guess.

Factory reset will not downgrade android version. He will have to flash miui 11 followed by stock android 9 rom to retain function of sensors and to keep widevine L1
There isn't a way to downgrade, except what the previous commenter said. Android 10 isn't that bad, you only hear people complaining but there are few dozen people i know personally who use Mi A3 with android 10 and none have problems including me. Just installed Google's eclipse live wallpaper looks sick on the oled screen. Forums became littered with complaints but the people who do enjoy using it don't mention it. Also i guess it's a batch of phones which didn't have the proper settings from the factory which lead to said problems

No issues here. Was on Android 10 as soon as it came out. Of course did reset the phone. No battery drains here and no random reboots. Maybe it's something else?
I'm on android 10 for months now. No random reboots here, only problem that the battery is worse than in pie.
I might give the factory reset a chance. maybe it will help to get rid of the battery drain.
what is the most efficient way to restore my apps (+ settings if possible) after the reset?
is titanium backup still a thing?
or is backing up and restoring the apps a bad idea if i want to fix the battery drain?

Post Android 11 issue

After updating to Android 11 I've noticed my device seems to heat up all the time like something is working in the background. I did a FDR and setup as a new device. Even after the reset, the device seems to heat up still. Any suggestions on what to try?

Well, hopefully they release a supplemental update to address the issue. I love Android 11 otherwise. Does your phone have a random glitch with messenger or any app where you can open photos to attach or something and have to close the app then reopen and it works?

I have not had that issue yet. It is laggy. There is also an "out of focus/blur" screen when it transitions from screen to screen, or should I say, app to app. It appears intentional, like a transition between scenes in a movie, but there is no point to it. The phone used to just switch screens. Now there is a transitional screen. Like the "red loading bar" of old.
I am just very disappointed with LG. and the V series. I have had most of them starting with the V10.
Sometimes I long for the old times when if you did not like the OS, you rolled back to an older version or flashed someone else's ROM onto your phone.

How about no! Lol. I have a Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G there's a reason it not my daily. Samsung still needs a lot to mature it's a huge improvement but still leaking key Android features. I can agree, hardware wise not entirely software. One has good things about software and the other has good things.
Anyone else having system ui crashes whenever they pull down the notification shade? I guess been a bug on several Android 11 phones: OnePlus, Pixel, Samsung
I reached out to LG, they said to do a FDR (factory data reset) and if that did not resolve the issues to send the phone in for repair (since I am still under warrenty).
I'm on AT&T and updated to Android 11 earlier this week. It resulted in a black screen soft-brick. I could still see the touches (from dev mode) where fingers tapped the screen. And if I held down the Power button, I'd see the typical Power Down / Restart / Etc. options, and tapping on them would generate the appropriate responses. But in all other instances, it was just a black screen. I figured my HEAVY de-bloating of Android 10 when I first got the phone caused something to break.
So I went ahead and did a full factory restore using recovery/safe mode and set it up as a new phone, and haven't had any serious issues since. I went ahead and got almost everything (minus Fluid Navigation Gestures, RIP) working the way I wanted, and embarked on another HEAVY de-bloating process. Seems like I took things too far, because, upon my next reboot, I was in the exact same black screen soft-brick state I mentioned above.
Another factory reset. Another session of restoring my apps, launcher, settings, and customizations. This time, I just used Package Disabler Pro for LG from the Google Play Store to perform some more restrained bloatware disabling, and everything's been pretty great. For Android 10 and the first attempt at de-bloating Android 11, I was using ADB commands to "uninstall" dozens upon dozens of system apps. Battery life is not quite as good as it was with my heavily de-bloated Android 10 environment, but I didn't expect it to be, and I'm not going to risk messing this all up again.
My only complaint is that stock AOD (and Sidelight Notifications) don't seem to be working properly, no matter how I configure them in Settings. I'm not sure what's causing the issue, but I actually developed this problem just a few days BEFORE the AT&T OTA landed, and it's persisted through a full Android point upgrade and two factory resets, so I imagine there's a conflict somewhere. Maybe with Fluid Simulation - Trippy Stress Reliever (my live wallpaper app of choice), Energy Bar, or Nova Launcher. I haven't been able to pinpoint it yet, but since it predates the Android 11 OTA by a few days, there must be another cause.
I do miss Fluid Navigation Gestures, but I'm happy to report that the new Android 11 gestures are way better than Android 10's. Not quite as customized as I had FNG, but I've adapted. Until/unless someone figures out how to hide the navigation bar without root, LG's gestures it is, I guess.
I have a Verizon V60 and since the update the processor is pegged to 100% utilization after just a few minutes of listening to YouTube music. Nothing I do will drop the utilization down besides a reboot. Again, after a few minutes, same thing. That's what you guys are seeing. I did a factory reset thinking that might fix it. It didn't. I restored all of my apps, but not my data just to be sure that nothing weird was causing issues. Even after the restore, the CPU was pegged at 100%.
Long story short, the SW is bugged. So was 10 (voice commands broken with Maps in Incognito mode for example). I've wanted to switch to this phone as my daily for a while from my Galaxy S10, but LG keeps dropping the ball.
Regarding the Samsung, it has significantly more features and regular updates. There is no comparison, frankly. I only like the LG for the form factor, large battery, speed and head phone jack amp. Otherwise, the S10 is just a better phone. This reminds me why I stopped buying Motorola phones. Buggy updates with broken core functionality.
I bought a V50 based on the positive reviews, and I ultimately sold it due to bugs (Android Auto was an absolute mess). The V60 has been better, but still far from perfect. I find phone reviews absolutely worthless as those people seem to restrict their usage to social media and photography. When it comes to using it as an actual phone, silence.
Sorry for the long rant. I will give LG another month to see if they fix this issue. Otherwise, I'm selling this phone and will never buy another LG.

Anyone else having system ui crashes whenever they pull down the notification shade? I guess been a bug on several Android 11 phones: OnePlus, Pixel, Samsung

Not on an LG V60, but I've got serious other issues I'm here about.
I don't usually post here, but gotten a ton of great info here over the years, including rooting a couple phones. Thank you to all who contribute.
Since the update I've found three of my favcorite apps, all paid for, afflicted with issues that range from a couple cosmetic glitches in AccuBattery, to one app that's completely unusable. I've done one factory reset since the update.
I have a support ticket opened for the worst one; Radio Paradise's streaming app, the beta version (only one of these in beta). After clearing its cache and data, then uninstalling, then restarting (power off/>10 seconds pause/on), then reinstalling, I can sometimes get a connection and start downloading music, streaming or caching. But just once. Then it won't reconnect to the streams at all.
The other one, Weather Underground's app, now won't even start. But the notification seems fine keeping time and temp on schedule. Try to start the app and it immediately shuts down.
All three of these apps, including the RP Betas, have been solid for a year (one attraction) and all run fine on an old V10 and V30 still on the wifi. Have for years.
If this gibes with anyone else's experiance I'd like to hear about it, I haven't found these kinds of complaints anywhere. My Spidey sense suggests a possible permissioning issue but I'm not sure.

Question Lag & Bugs after Feb update

Am i only the one who is noticing minor lags around the UI after the feb update including few scrolling and wallpaper bugs on 23 Ultra?
Had no problem on my U1.
I'm noticing battery life isn't as good. Anyone else feel this?

You can't judge battery for a few days. It always sucks immediately after an update.
Should i roll back or wait for another update?

I just got my s23 ultra on Monday. Turn on phone and updated. I must say battery life isn't that great either. Once I start using my phone it goes down quickly
I haven't notice any lags after the update. Battery life seems the same as before. I just installed the update today so will see if there is any significant change. But so far seems that it's just working as intended. Still hitting 5+ hours of SOT after last a full day of use and 30% battery left no optimizations.
Seems fine here. Am on light battery profile
No difference here on VZW.
No problems on the U1 model.
No issues for me. If you have a few hiccups wait a day or 2. Apps do re-optimize after an update so let everything adjust.

Have had this after “analyzing battery pattern” phase. It was probably the play store update but as soon battery finished analysis p, it got worse
I don't get why some of you are only getting half the battery life that I am. I am Deaf so I don't do any voice calling. Don't have any games installed yet. And only Social Media I have is Facebook and Messenger. Other than that it's all Stock without any modifications and using Adaptive Refresh, Adaptive Battery and WQHD resolution.
The first screenshot was with Standard Performance Profile and Second was Light Performance Profile.

I'm telling you, was so average. Installed older release software, back to ridiculous battery life.

Look at the reports online. This Feb update has some s23 owners noticing battery degradation. Mostly previous gen phones updated to 5.1 though it seems, like s22 s21 owners
Use good gardians app booster after an update and you'll be fine

I use. I see no difference in what that thing does. I like the idea of it though lol
Hi, lot's of problems here
apps force closing
system notifications saying apps have issues
system restarting and going on a loop (not getting to the pin screen)
Had to go back to my prevoius phone until I figure it out
Chatted with Samsung, no straight answers.
Factory resetted it, still same issues, even on the instalation screen to pick language.
Anyone know how to rollback in a clean way to avoid warranty issues?

Regarding batery, wasn t able to check, but I assume it will have issues too.
Thx

Why do you update your phone if you get bugs afterwards?

Because I don't have a time machine to know what would happen. I assumed this didn't happen, but I was wrong, now is time to fix it..
Downloading update via Frija and will update on Odin.
The thing is I can't rollback, as I couldn't get the old firmware, only the new one.
I'll update here when is done.

Remember it for the rest of your life!!! All updates bring only bugs! No need to update Windows and Android! If you do, you will have problems. You won't get anything good.
